The U.S. Pacific Fleet commander, addressing a security conference in Australia, said in answer to a question on Thursday that he would be prepared to launch a nuclear strike on China if President Donald Trump so ordered.

The fleet spokesman later said the question was asked as an "outrageous hypothetical".

Admiral Scott Swift was speaking at the Australian National University in Canberra when he was asked whether he would be prepared to launch a nuclear attack on China if ordered to do so by Trump.

"The answer would be yes," he said.

Swift said that all members of the U.S. military had sworn an oath to obey officers and the U.S. president as commander in chief to defend the constitution.

"This is core to the American democracy," he said, in a recording of the event obtained by Reuters.

"Any time you have a military that is moving away from a focus, and an allegiance, to civilian control, then we really have significant problems."

Iran’s top nuclear negotiator has slammed the ‘hostile’ move by the US House of Representatives to impose new sanctions against the Islamic Republic, saying the decision would kill the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Ministry for Legal and International Affairs, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, said on Wednesday the discussions underway in the US Congress to pass a new law against Iran, North Korea and Russia amount to a totally hostile move against these countries.

Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar in Tehran, Araqchi said Iran will give a crushing response to the United States’ next move.

“Over the past years, we have always been targeted by the US government and Congress’ hostile moves and the hostilities are not limited to the incumbent government and congress,” he said.

According to a Farsi Report by ISNA, he went on saying that the anti-Iran bill which is under discussion in the US Congress does not impose new sanctions against the Islamic Republic in new fields. “The new law, if approved, is in fact a wrap-up of all the US sanctions imposed on Iran over the past years in non-nuclear fields,” Araqchi noted.

The Iranian diplomat also warned that the new law, if approved, will hamper the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and also deprive Iran of its rights under the nuclear deal.

“The new law violates various articles of the JCPOA. The US was obliged to fulfil its pledges under the deal with goodwill and a constructive approach and avoid any move violating its implementation. These are parts of the US commitments under the deal,” he added.

The deputy foreign minister also said the US House’s move stands in stark contrast with these commitments and Iran will never remain silent towards the violation.

President Trump is pushing for inspections of Iranian military sites as he considers canceling the Obama-era nuclear agreement with Tehran, senior U.S. officials told The Associated Press.

The new strategy will also include negotiations with European nations on a follow-up agreement aimed at halting Iran's nuclear development, after the current deal expires in about 10 years, according to the AP.

Iran on Thursday successfully tested a satellite-carrying rocket after promising a response to proposed U.S. sanctions over Tehran's ballistic missile program.

IRAN successfully launched a satellite-carrying rocket into space on Thursday, the country’s state media reported without elaborating.

Iranian state television described the launch as involving a “Simorgh” rocket that is capable of carrying a satellite weighing 250 kilograms. The state media report did not elaborate on the rocket’s payload. “Simorgh” means “phoenix” in Farsi.

The website YJC.ir, which is affiliated with Iranian state television, as well as the semi-official Fars news agency, also reported the launch on Thursday, saying it was successful.

The launch comes as the United States has criticised Iran’s ballistic missile tests.
