I think The Netherlands got a taste of possible victory with The Common Linnets, then disaster with Trinjte, and are definitely in it to win it this year. Back in September, Douwe Bob was the first artist to be announced for Eurovision 2016, and he’s one of the last artists to reveal their song. But finally we’ll get to hear the Netherlands‘ entry for 2016, Friday morning, March 4, at 11:20 CET.

Initially the song was due to be released in February, but Douwe later announced that the song was going to be released on 2 March. A few weeks ago, the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS confirmed the song reveal had been moved to 4 March.

They are taking it big this year. A huge social media action has been started, you can follow everything from Douwe Bob (#TeamDouwe) on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat (TeamDouwe).

Over the last few months Douwe has been teasing us about the song and the performance. Would he go on stage in a Barbara Dex Award-winning costume or would he eat you alive with his make-up?

Also, he likes playing game. Douwe has dared everybody to take part in his hangman game in which he wants you to guess the title of the song. It tells us that the title will be two four-letter words. What can it be?

This year, the Netherlands has chosen a new way to present the song: the internet. The song will be presented by Douwe Bob during a Periscope livestream Friday morning at 11.20 CET, which you can follow on all #TeamDouwe social networks.

The hype around Douwe Bob seems to be working, In the last few days, we’ve seen the Netherlands climbing the odds and they are currently placing as fifth most likely to win. Can they beat Sweden, Poland, Russia and Latvia? We will find out tomorrow.

The Netherlands to the rescue. This is a darn alright slice of country pop (whatever you want to call it). It comes across as genuine which is a humongous plus and of much importance to me. "Slow Down" is very radio friendly but that doesn't really subtract from the song. The verses are more interesting than the (dare I say) repetitive chorus but overall everything works well. It's nothing super special but it's totally listenable, and in what is shaping up to be such a dire year, this song is near enough like a diamond. It's got a really timeless feel to it.

I really love this. Perhaps as a Eurovsion entry, it is something completely different than what we’ve seen/heard so far. Almost like there’s a deep south Americana sound to it. But different is good, and I think this will appeal to a big variety, if not an older variety of Euro fans. My mum was a teen in the early 1970’s and she adores this! It reminds her of the music she loved growing up. I could listen to Douwe Bob’s gorgeous voice all day. Nice one Netherlands! Love from the UK x

I like it too. Might be a little too old-fashioned for some, but it’s a pleasant melody. And much better than last year’s entry. Never underestimate the Netherlands with country. I made that mistake in 2014. 😉

I don’t know how to pronounce his name, so I’m just going to call him Dobby. Is that even close to the actual pronunciation? )

The ‘slow down brother’ definitely lodges inside your brain. I was a bit disappointed at first listen, the chorus is of course quite repetitive, but there’s a melancholy to this song that I haven’t experienced with any of the other entries yet. Clever song, no idea how it will do in Eurovision but hey, if we qualify for the final that’s already a miracle given our track record.

So this is a response to a song on his album he released last year, “Can’t Slow Down”. It would be funny if the song was good, which it is not.
If this does manage to qualify, it would be borderline at best. Only half the songs for Semi 1 are known right now and sorry to say, this is the worst so far. There was no impact on first listen, which will be a problem come the contest as millions of people will be hearing the songs for the first time.

This is exactly what I expected, a solid, well produced entry.
It’s not this years winner but it’s very Douwe Bob and far more grown up then half of the songs chosen so far.

I m afraid that Eurovison 2016 wili be one of weaker contest from 2000 in quality of songs, but only good is that we don t know who will win, I think we will have situation like in 2001,20002,2011 that winner will be surprise country.

This is without a doubt the best song of this year’s Eurovision so far. Douwe is so talented. I can imagine how the comments will be against him as most of the people here has awful taste in music and can’t appreciate genuin, good music. It’s not a winner though, it’s too qualitative and competent for that. Or well… If The Common Linnets could end up second…?

I really wanted to like this, but to me this felt a little flat and repetitive… For the first thirty seconds, I really appreciated the kind of indie and upbeat feel, but the rest of the song is a bit of a fizzle. I don’t know if Douwe Bob would be able to carry this through to the final just on his charisma alone… :/

There are any songs for and not for Eurovision? What the hell you are writing here? In Eurovision we can see all genres and every can be succesfull, if the song is good. You think, Europe is listening only average pop like you? ESC is full of diversity and every song has a chance. And I think, if you are more original and unusual as the others, you have better chances.

3rd time in row , we had song from The Netherlands in some country style type of song.
This is for one of weakest song from Netherlands from 2010 to 2016, only worst was song for me was song from 2011. My prediciton simillar placment for Netherlands like in 2011, maybe juries will only push Netherlands from last place in first semifinal.

I appreciate the effort to go onto a more country-folk route cause that is what Douwe is as an artist and that is what I expected from him. He is being true to himself. He is no Dana International and no Conchita Wurst and … thank God for that. Melodically this does not give me the goosebumps “Calm After The Storm” gave me and still does … it lacks the warmth, the emotion, the intimacy that the 2014 had – a true story being told and not words being repeated like 100 times for no reason – and goes into a more good-feeling vibe, which is not so much what I’m into in music, And taking in consideration how most entries this year seem to sound all the same and lack depth and soul this just sounds like a a random piece in the middle of a lame puzzle. I had better and higher expectations but sadly I am underwhelmed. It’s shame really.

I love that the Netherlands have proven that country music can be a popular genre of music at Eurovision. Will Douwe continue this trend? Well in a word TOTALLY!

‘Slow Down’ is a great contemporary country song and Douwe’s voice is distinctive, authentic and dare I say it sexy as hell! You can hear that he is a musician’s singer and someone who can perform live.

He has a cheeky lovable rogue look to him and I am hoping that he and his band will bring that swagger to the stage in Stockholm. I ask only one thing – No Eurovision fashion advice from Trijntje Oosterhuis! Those dresses still give me nightmares! However I don’t think that will be a problem for the über suave Douwe and his handsome band.

‘Slow Down’ is an easily accessible song for all ages from teenagers to their grand parents – I am obviously not far off my teenage years (one coughs) but ‘Slow Down’ can pull in votes from all ages and it thoroughly deserves so.

So to sum it up – Bravo Douwe, Bravo AVROTROS and Bravo the Netherlands. There will not be a ‘Slow Down’ in the votes that will be coming your way in May.

I will leave you with one final thought. Switch ‘W’ for ‘Z’ and Douwe becomes Douze #JustSaying #Contender

Volgens mij waren de reacties op CATS of heel positief (want vernieuwend, apart in de zin van opvallend) of juist heel negatief (want past niet bij het ESF, te langzaam, te saai).

Bij Trijntje was men volgens mij voornamelijk overwegend negatief; men vond de herhaling irritant en het nummer (qua tekst dan) niet passen bij de leeftijd van de Trijn. I don't know if it is because I feel nowadays things happen so fast that we forget to "slow down", but I kind of identify with what he says. I also think his voice suits the song and I don't get any unpretentious vibes from it. It's a simple song. The only thing that puts me a little bit off about it is its repetitive ending. Other than that, I really like it!

Live zou het wel kunnen werken als het authentiek en sympathiek in beeld wordt gebracht. Een wereldnummer is het niet, maar het lijkt me wel spek naar de bek van Radio 2. Het nummer en de stem doen me wat aan Stan Van Samang denken en Douwe Bob lijkt ook dezelfde charme uit te stralen. Ik had hem echter liever met een origineler nummer op de proppen zien komen, want dit is te doorsnee voor mij.

Fabio Ponente: Nederland springt er voor mij uit met een totaal ander genre nummer. Dit is zeer aangenaam om naar te luisteren, en ook verrassend omdat het iets totaal anders is. De clip én Douwe zelf zijn ook leuk om naar te kijken, wat ook een pluspunt is. Dit vind ik een goed nummer, het onderscheidt zich succesvol van de rest.

Roy Van der Merwe: Ik ben een fan van Nederlandse muziek, vooral van artiesten als George Baker, Luv, Maywood, enzovoort. Deze zanger is onbekend voor me, maar hij ziet er leuk uit en zijn stem is heel mooi. Dit is allesbehalve een winnaar, maar wel veel beter dan de Nederlandse inzendingen van de afgelopen jaren. Daarmee ben ik misschien in de minderheid, maar het leuke van het songfestival is dat elk lied zijn eigen schare fans heeft. Zal zijn outing als biseksueel hem meer stemmen opleveren van vrouwelijke én mannelijke fans?

For Eurovision, Douwe and his band brings us Slow Down, which is one of the best written songs this year. We’re definitely talking happy folk again, and that’s not something we are often blessed with on that scene. Neither are we always blessed with as good live artists as these guys, who are currently touring The Netherlands as we speak, probably melting quite a few hearts along the way.

As writers we also have to say we really appreciate someone who can write decent lyrics. There’s tons of that where Douwe comes from, Slow Down being no exception. In a world of “you’re the only one” and “I’m holding on” and “let’s stay together, we’ll live forever in the sunlight”, we like someone who can actually tell us a message worth listening to. Not that we need to slow down in Stockholm, but you know, we might need it sometime not so far after that.

While the Eurovisional attention, closely related to early odds and horrendous fanwanks, keeps focusing on France, Russia and, heaven forbid, Austria, we cannot wait to see what Douwe and his crew come up with onstage in Stockholm. Keeping The Common Linnets fresh in mind, we’re guessing those odds will shorten as the rehersals starts. And it probably doesn’t hurt that Douwe promises to open a bar during Eurovision either. That may be just a gimmick related to his stage show, of course, but he has hosted pop-ups in Amsterdam before, so we’re still hoping we will be able to order a decent pour of bourbon in downtown Stockholm.

Nonetheless, there’s bound to not be much slowing down from the Dutchmen in Stockholm. This guy is going somewhere and he’s going fast. And we’d like to be there when it happens.

Ik verwacht dat Malta en Azerbeidzjan ook hoog gaan scoren volgende week. Beide zijn Zweedse producties. Objectief is het niet allemaal, ik las op een forum dat één van de panelleden (Helena Paparizou, esf winnares 2005) zei dat ze goede vriendjes is met één van de heren achter de Russische inzending, een Griek.
