Gisteren was de eerste test met de nieuwe superspeedway aero kits op Indianapolis. Montoya was het snelste, voor Castroneves en Marco Andretti.

Gisteren werd de officiele inschrijvingslijst voor de Indy 500 bekend gemaakt. Ten opzichte van de lijst die ik hier gepost heb, staat er nog maar een TBA op, de #19 van Dale Coyne. Carlos Huertas rijdt in de #18. Geruchten gaan dat Vitor Meira, James Davison en Katherine Legge in de running zijn voor het laatste stoeltje.
Het is dus zeker dat er 34 deelnemers zich proberen te kwalificeren voor 33 startplaatsen.

Kun je nagaan wat een gevolgen zo'n crash kan hebben tijdens de race. Benieuwd wat ze nu gaan doen, want opstijgende auto's is wel het laatste wat je kunt gebruiken bij een crash.quote:

Nou ja, dit was niet echt een opstijgende auto... Meer een flip. Natuurlijk ook vervelend en gevaarlijk, maar dit hou je niet tegen in een formule auto. Newgarden's probleem begon op het moment dat de linker wielen verdwenen. Daardoor helt de auto natuurlijk naar opzij, wat er voor zorgt dat er meer lucht onder de vlakke bodemplaat kan die aan de linkerkant tegen gehouden wordt door de minder ruimte. Dat zorgt voor meer druk onder de rechterkant van de auto, wat hem effectief ondersteboven duwt.quote:

Kun je nagaan wat een gevolgen zo'n crash kan hebben tijdens de race. Benieuwd wat ze nu gaan doen, want opstijgende auto's is wel het laatste wat je kunt gebruiken bij een crash.
Die van Castroneves was al aan het 'opstijgen' voordat ie de muur raakte, en 'fladderde' ook wat door de lucht. Dat was wel echt een aerodynamisch probleem wat veroorzaakt wordt door falende aero wanneer de auto achteruit rijdt.
Dus het zijn 2 compleet verschillende ongevallen, met een compleet andere oorzaak. 1 kan opgelost worden, de ander helaas niet, zonder de bodemplaat aan te passen.
Als ik de beelden van Helio terugkijk lijkt hij helemaal niet met een full wicker te rijden, alleen de 3 hogere plaatjes. De wicker over de hele lengte van de neus lijkt er bij hem niet op te zitten, en ik zie ook niet dat zijn neus op de plek het asfalt raakt.quote:

Het probleem lijkt, mijns inziens, meer veroorzaakt te worden door de platelets achter de achterwielen, die zorgen voor een klein beetje lift bij hard achteruitrijden. Dit wordt vervolgens verergert door de lucht die onder de auto komt en nergens heen kan wanneer de auto langs de muur schaaft.
Maar goed, ik ben geen aerodynamica expert.

Ik zie ook bij de auto van Newgarden, dat de bodemplaat niet over de gehele breedte vlak is. Aan beide zijden van het midden loopt die aan de achterkant omhoog om een zuigend effect te creėren. Als ik de beelden van Helio terugkijk lijkt hij helemaal niet met een full wicker te rijden, alleen de 3 hogere plaatjes. De wicker over de hele lengte van de neus lijkt er bij hem niet op te zitten, en ik zie ook niet dat zijn neus op de plek het asfalt raakt.
Het probleem lijkt, mijns inziens, meer veroorzaakt te worden door de platelets achter de achterwielen, die zorgen voor een klein beetje lift bij hard achteruitrijden. Dit wordt vervolgens verergert door de lucht die onder de auto komt en nergens heen kan wanneer de auto langs de muur schaaft.
Maar goed, ik ben geen aerodynamica expert.

Chevy (and Honda) use relatively small front wings and tiny rear wings. The long, wide underwing is where most of the car’s downforce is generated, and with air flowing in from the front and out through the back, it functions like an inverted airplane wing and sucks the car to the ground
Turn an Indy car around at 200mph and feed that air backward through the underwing, and it will behave like a normal airplane wing and generate lift. With enough air speed, and pressure build-up in the tunnels--which Castroneves obviously achieved, lift turns into liftoff.

Nu is tot 20.30 de laatste practice bezig. Daarna vanaf 21.15 de kwalificatie, waarbij iedereen een poging doet. Daarna is de shoot-out voor de laatste rij.

3:15 ET UPDATE: At the moment, it's believed Dallara is inspecting every IndyCar team's suspension and that's why practice is on hold.
RACER has confirmed the series brought pictures of Hinchcliffe's crash componentry to the teams, which showed a failure of the right-front suspension rocker arm. The photo showed the rocker split, but the cause of the rocker splitting is currently unknown. The rocker arm connects the suspension pushrod to the damper (RIGHT). The crashed right-front wishbone, and pushrod, are currently being sought by the series and team.

RACER has confirmed the series brought pictures of Hinchcliffe's crash componentry to the teams, which showed a failure of the right-front suspension rocker arm. The photo showed the rocker split, but the cause of the rocker splitting is currently unknown. The rocker arm connects the suspension pushrod to the damper (RIGHT). The crashed right-front wishbone, and pushrod, are currently being sought by the series and team.

In the impact, which flattened the right side of the chassis, one of the suspension wishbones penetrated the Dallara safety cell, and subsequently caused the majority of the physical damage Hinchcliffe received. RACER has confirmed through multiple sources that Hinchcliffe had the steel wishbone enter and exit his right leg, then enter his upper left thigh, and continue into his pelvic region before it came to a stop.
The suspension component pinned the 28-year-old in the car, leading the safety team to cut the wishbone from the chassis to allow Hinchcliffe's extraction.
With the multiple intrusions, Hinchcliffe experienced massive blood loss at the crash site, and despite the gravity of the soft tissue injuries to his lower extremities, stopping the bleeding became an immediate priority for the medical staff to address once he was pulled from the chassis.
After being placed in the ambulance, the doctors and technicians inside evidently stabilized Hinchcliffe's injuries. It's not known how long he was in surgery but it was "touch and go" for a while, according to the source.
"He's probably not going to race anymore this year but the most important thing is that all those great people saved his life," said his friend.
According to timing and scoring data, he was carrying at least 228mph of momentum before a right-front suspension failure sent the No. 5 ARROW Dallara-Honda into the SAFER barrier nose first. Without the ability to steer the car, Hinchcliffe was unable to alter his course. The force of the impact reportedly measured 125 Gs.
Hinchcliffe remained in intensive care but was resting comfortably on Tuesday morning.
