Syri is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesi demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syri. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 150.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syri bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syri, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden vechten tegen zowel de regering als de rebellen. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier.

Landen die de Syrische regering steunen: Rusland (sinds de Koude Oorlog een bondgenoot en Syri heeft de laatst overgebleven marinebasis van Rusland in de regio), China, Iran, Algerije, Soedan, Wit-Rusland, Venezuela, Irak en Noord-Korea.

Vrij Syrisch Leger - verschillende milities die zich zo noemen
Islamitisch Front - salafistische islamistische organisatie, verwerpt representatieve democratie en secularisme
Al-Nusra Front - onderdeel van Al Qaida
IS(IS) - soennitische terreurorganisatie dat zowel in Irak als in Syri opereert. Iedereen die niet soennitisch is loopt kans onthoofd te worden door deze groepering. In februari 2014 verbrak Al-Qaeda de banden met IS. IS heeft aan zowel de regering als de andere rebellen groepen de oorlog verklaart.
Landen die de rebellen steunen: NAVO-landen, Jordani, Libi, Tunesi, VAE, Saudi-Arabi en Qatar. De voornaamste reden van die landen om de rebellen te steunen is het bondgenootschap van Syri met Iran en Rusland, en de steun aan Hezbollah.

In de VN veiligheidsraad gebruiken Rusland en China hun veto over een dergelijke resolutie. Ook werd Cameron door het Britse parlement verboden een aanval op Syri in te zetten.

Islamic State militants fighting in Syria and Iraq have released a sickening video of a young woman being stoned to death by a group of men - including her own father.
The shocking footage is understood to have been filmed in the city of Hama and shows a bearded cleric ranting at the woman in Arabic and accusing her adultery while she pleads for her life.
The woman turns to her father and begs his forgiveness but he coldly rejects her, saying he would rather please God. He then turns to the men to give the signal for his daughter's murder to begin.
Minutes later, as the men rain rocks down upon the helpless woman, her father steps forward with a large stone and the video fades to black.
It is believed he had been granted the barbaric 'honour' of being allowed end the life of the daughter he felt had betrayed both him and her religion.
The sickening five-minute video emerged on ISIS-affiliated social media pages this morning. It is not clear when the footage was actually shot and has not been independently verified.
The exact accusations against the woman remain sketchy, although the cleric who appears at the start of mobile phone-filmed clip accuses her of committing adultery.
The militant orders her to be 'content and happy' that she is about to be stoned to death because, he says, her death has been ordered by God and is therefore required under Islamic law.
Asking her is she is now willing to 'submit to God' and be stoned to death, the young woman replies 'yes', before pleading with her father to forgive her.
After initially ignoring her, the man is eventually prompted into responding by the militant.
'Don't call me father,' he tells his daughter, who responds by asking him to pray for her.
At this point her father turns to the ISIS fighters, who help him tie a rope around her neck and drag her to a pit, where the stoning begins.
As the militants rain down rocks on the defenseless woman, her father steps forward and picks up the largest rock before using it to strike and kill his daughter.
The exact moment of her death is not caught on camera as the footage fades to black moments before her father strikes her.
ISIS militants often use stoning to murder women they accuse of committing adultery.
Earlier this year the extremists stoned two women to death in Raqqa after accusing them of having sex outside marriage. Both were placed in holes in the ground before a lorry arrived to dump large rocks for the men to use to brutally murder the women.
In a separate incident a man was filmed being stoned to death in the Iraqi city of Mosul in August.

Sayyed Nasrallah Tours in Bekaa, Advises Terrorists: Die of Cold or Retreat
Al-Akhbar Lebanese daily reported Tuesday that Hizbullah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah advised the terrorists on the Lebanese border with Syria either to die of cold or retreat.
According to the daily, Sayyed Nasrallah told a group of scholars on the eve of the holy month of Muharram that the terrorists are “incapable of invading any Bekaa area because they are surrounded.”
“Those terrorists have two options either to die of cold or leave in civilian clothes to Lebanon and Syria,” His Eminence said.
He further added “the militants are incapable of invading any Bekaa area because they are surrounded.”
His Eminence also warned the extremists that Hizbullah “will not be conquered and we will not allow anyone to defeat us.”
In parallel, the Resistance Leader assured that the security situation “is under control.”
“In the event of a security flaw, that doesn’t mean we have failed because the biggest countries in the world cannot claim to have security under control 100 percent.”

Al-Akhbar Lebanese daily reported Tuesday that Hizbullah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah advised the terrorists on the Lebanese border with Syria either to die of cold or retreat.
According to the daily, Sayyed Nasrallah told a group of scholars on the eve of the holy month of Muharram that the terrorists are “incapable of invading any Bekaa area because they are surrounded.”
“Those terrorists have two options either to die of cold or leave in civilian clothes to Lebanon and Syria,” His Eminence said.
He further added “the militants are incapable of invading any Bekaa area because they are surrounded.”
His Eminence also warned the extremists that Hizbullah “will not be conquered and we will not allow anyone to defeat us.”

The Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) 7th Division backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) has captured the village of Al-Samdaniyya in the Al-Quneitra Governorate after 3 days of fierce clashes with the Syrian Revolutionaries Front (SRF). The NDF led the charge into the western flank of the village, breaking through the SRF’s frontline defense and taking control of the western sector of Al-Samdaniyya. The 7th Division followed the NDF’s advance with an attack of their own, taking control of Al-Samdaniyya earlier this morning. Riyad Haza’a Al-Khalid, a field commander from the SRF was identified among the dead.
Following the success at Al-Samdaniyya, the 7th Division broke through the SRF’s defenses in the neighboring village of Al-Hamidiyya, killing scores of militants in the process. According to a military source, the NDF has arrived in Al-Hamidiyya and continues to push deeper into the village, despite heavy resistance from the SRF. Clashes are still ongoing between the NDF/SAA and the SRF; however, the 7th Division has reached officially reached the Al-Hamidiyya Cemetery.
After 4 days of intense firefights, the SRF has captured the village of ‘Umm Mayaazan in the Dara’a Governorate from the NDF. The SRF stormed this area over the weekend, overwhelming the NDF entrenched in this village with a large group of fighters.
