Two-thirds of Christians: Hezbollah protecting Lebanon
Results of an opinion poll showed that two-thirds of Christians believe that Hezbollah’s confrontation of Takfiri groups is in protection of Lebanon and they do not agree that this intervention is the result of the threat of Takfiri groups in Lebanon. The majority rejected bringing international forces on the Eastern border for its protection from Takfiris. 73% of respondents believed that the international coalition raids in Syria and Iraq are not aimed at the elimination of Daesh (ISIS).
The poll was conducted by the Beirut Center for Research and Information which included four questions about the intervention of Hezbollah in Syria and the replacement of the party with UNIFIL in the face of armed groups on the border, the effectiveness of the party in the confrontation of militants on the Syrian border, and the objective of the American raids in Syria and Iraq.
The results of the poll showed that a majority of the two-thirds of the respondents (about 66%) do not agree that the intervention of Hezbollah in Syria has lead to the threat of armed groups in Lebanon as well as a large political group in Lebanon sees. This finding suggests a clear increase in Christian support of the military role of the party in Syria and on the Eastern border compared with the two polls conducted by the center on the same subject, the first in June 2013 with 39% support from Christian respondents on the intervention of the party in Syria, while opposed by 53%, and the second in February 2014 showed 53% support of the Christians of this intervention. The majority of respondents (58%) rejected that UNIFIL troops replace Hezbollah on the Syrian border as some political forces have demanded. The poll portrayed that about 63% of Christian respondents believe that Hezbollah’s confrontation of armed groups is protecting Lebanon, while 33% thought otherwise and 4% refused to answer. The large majority of respondents, about 73%, does not believe that American raids in Iraq and Syria are aimed at the elimination of Daesh (ISIS).
