ANYWAY…. the artist who did get to number one is a British rapper called J Hus (who?). J Hus didn’t release any physical product at all and got to number one via 22,525 ‘sales equivalent’ streams and 1,011 downloads. Unlike J Hus, the Pet Shop Boys didn’t spent a large part of 2019 in jail for carrying a knife on the streets of London. Eminem was number two with 18,724 sales, so it wasn’t even close, in the end.

The Pet Shop Boys‘ concert film, Discovery: Live in Rio 1994, will be released as a 2CD+DVD set in April.

The concert film marked the Pet Shop Boys first visit to Brazil at the end of 1994, and was issued on VHS and laserdisc in 1995.

The set list includes classic hits including ‘West End girls’, ‘Suburbia’, ‘Being Boring’, ‘Go West’, ‘Rent’ and ‘Always on my mind’, as well some interesting covers, including a rendition of Blur’s ‘Girls and Boys’ (which the PSBs remixed at the time of release).

The show was filmed by Brazilian director Roberto Berliner with a local TV crew in December 1994 in front of an enthusiastic Rio audience. It was shot on SD video, so to “keep the integrity of the original” the decision was made to restore and present the concert in its native SD format on DVD, rather than upscaling to HD for Blu-ray.

A new booklet features candid on-tour photographs, an interview by Chris Heath conducted during tour rehearsals and an exclusive on-tour diary by Neil Tennant. This release marks the debut of this set on CD as well as DVD. There is no vinyl edition.

Discovery: Live in Rio 1994 will be issued on 30 April 2021.

Elton John en Years & Years-zanger Olly Alexander hebben gisteravond diepe indruk gemaakt bij de Brit Awards, het Engelse equivalent van de Grammy’s. De twee brachten een beladen cover van de Pet Shop Boys-klassieker It’s a sin, die nu al bovenaan iTunes staat in Engeland en Ierland. Een deel van de opbrengst gaat naar Eltons aidsfonds.

Het lied heeft dezelfde titel als de gelauwerde serie It’s a sin met Olly Alexander, die gaat over de uitbraak van aids in de jaren 80. Eltons partner David Furnish vergeleek die tijd met de huidige pandemie toen hij het optreden aankondigde.

,,Toen er in 2020 een nieuw virus uitbrak, reageerde de hele wereld meteen’’, zei hij. ,,Overheden kwamen in actie, steden werden afgesloten, wetenschappers maakten vaccins en we spraken er allemaal over, dag en nacht.’’ Dat was in 1981 met aids wel anders. ,,Toen was er stilte. In dat jaar kwam hiv er, maar mensen met hiv en aids werden omgeven door een sfeer van negeren, angst, schaamte en stigmatisering. Die stilte gaf aids de kans uit te groeien tot de grootste ziekte op onze planeet.’’

Maar de wereld heeft ‘teruggevochten’, zei hij, waardoor die er nu anders uitziet. ,,Hiv betekent niet langer dat je doodgaat; het is een aandoening die je onder controle kunt houden met een pil per dag. (...) Het gevecht gaat wel door, totdat alle stigma’s, het negeren, de angst en het virus zelf voorgoed de wereld uit zijn.’’

Elton en Olly begonnen vervolgens ingetogen aan het nummer van de Pet Shop Boys uit 1987, om te eindigen met talloze dansers, een uitbundig decor en confetti. Op Twitter, waar onder meer de naam van Elton al snel trending topic was, reageerden kijkers vol lof.

‘Een geniaal duo, de rillingen lopen over mijn rug’, luidde een van de vele tweets. ‘Ik ben in tranen’, schreef een ander. En: ‘Kippenvel, een belangrijk onderwerp waar meer over gesproken moet worden.’
