Ilse deLange en Waylon zullen tijdens de eerste Halve Finale op dinsdag 6 mei onder de naam "The Common Linnets" Nederland gaan vertegenwoordigen in Kopenhagen, met het nummer 'Calm after the storm'.

Back from lunch, with the Common Linnets. Ilse and Waylon share a 'common' microphone stand, which splits into two, providing a microphone for each of the performers. The duo are joined on-stage by a cellist, a drummer and a guitar-player. Cameras linger above the pair at the beginning of the rehearsal, as a lighting effect recreates a moving road between the two. Focus then moves very much onto the singers, who appear to look very 'intense' - there is a lot of straight-to-camera staring and at eachother! The backdrop is again very dark and moody, as is the LED floor - something of a surprise for this kind of song. There are no sweeping stage-shots at all - it's all very much about what is happening on-stage. These two very consummate performers are clearly comfortable on-stage however.

The stage floor has been transformed in a concrete road with signs onto until somewhere mid way the song when thorns and tree trunks take over and intertwine on the stage floor. During the second run through I noticed towards the end how the stage flooring turns really white grey'ish and how it's very overpowering. Perhaps they should tone it down a little.
Overall however, it's really effective staging for a non-typical Eurovision song.
The camera work is cleverly done as well, with a few moments where there's eye contact with the camera and let me tell you, Waylon's deep eyes are going to captivate you.
Vocally, Ilse and Waylon are top notch. Didn't expect anything different from them in all honesty.

De Belgen zijn nu toch wat enthousiaster geworden:

Not in terms of backdrop or so, the dark black and white contrasting trees, leaves and so are still there but from where I sit, it looks like a filter has been placed on top of the camera, making room for an old school brown colour, giving the performance a nostalgic feel.
Both Ilse and Waylon are now also dressed in their outfits and I have to say they really look the part. They've gone for the contrasting colours; Ilse is wearing a short white dress, which is full of flowers, and Waylon is wearing black trousers, black shirt and his black hat. They really look the part.
Calm after the Storm is really beautifully executed and I seriously think that the Netherlands are a big dark horse in the competition. I reckon they could easily pull off a Tom Dice (Belgium, ESC '10) here; As in winning its semi final and go on reaching top six in the grand final.

Quite a drastic change in tempo after Portugal, this comes across as rather classy and understated. I really do love the moving road effect on the this floor. I’ve noticed there are barely ANY camera changes for this, around 12, with one of them lasting for over half the song. Compare that to around 80 for Greece! They are great vocally and I think the juries are going to go for this in a big way. I could even see it winning the jury vote! Televote wise, I am not so sure, but I think The Netherlands good luck is going to continue for another year.

Op basis van de laatst gematchte prijs is Nederland nu 6e op Betfair.
De Sahara is zonder meer erg droog.
Dat, en dat willen mensen nog wel eens vergeten. Tuurlijk is het nummer belangrijk, maar het visuele aspect kan de kansen echt doen toenemen of juist afnemen. En er is een grote groep mensen die het saai, k*t, vlak vinden maar ook een grote groep die het wel mooi vindt.quote:

Wat me opvalt in het visuele t.o.v. eerste repetitie is dat het nu compleet zwart/wit is en op het 'stopke' je alleen een boom ziet. Bij de eerste rep. werd er ook gebruik gemaakt van geel licht, wat ik zelf niet zo mooi vond overigens. Ben wel blij met deze kleine verandering.

The overhead road traffic effects and long camera shot which introduces the singers at the start is great. Having them face one another is an inspired move as it makes the connection between the singers that wasn’t there in Amsterdam. Simple, effect staging, no gimmicks but is it instant enough? This is more likely to be a jury winner than a televote favourite but it’s back in the qualification mix for sure.

The interaction between Ilse DeLange and Waylon is sublime and in terms of song quality, stage impression and vocals, Netherlands is ticking lots of boxes. Each way terms for the semi win are appealing.

Waylon in black outfit; Ilse in white in a stylish monochrome presentation. These 2 give terrific camera and the staging is perfectly aligned to the song. Pitch perfect.
