PES 2012: Real Football Simulation

KONAMI details focus for forthcoming Pro Evolution Soccer simulation

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has outlined its ambitious plans and focus for PES 2012, which it will release in Autumn 2011 for PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Windows PC, Wii, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®2, and which again boasts exclusive use of the UEFA Champions LeagueTM & UEFA Europa LeagueTM licences.

“For me, the ultimate aim in the ongoing PES series is to match what people see when they go to a match or watch a big game on TV with what they experience on their console,” explains Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka, the Creative Producer of the Pro Evolution Soccer series. “As such, in consultation with football fans across the globe, we have been working non-stop to isolate and determine how to make our game marry in with how real football is played. This is key to PES 2012, and key to providing the ultimate football experience within a console title.”

To this end, PES 2012 continues KONAMI’s determination to work with fans of both the PES series and football in general, to create a truly realistic, immersive and utterly playable take on the modern game. Thus, the focus in PES 2012 is the instinctive way the game can be played and on teamwork in particular. Seabass and his Tokyo team have worked to recreate the very essence of top-level football, ensuring the new game’s AI engine has undergone a major overhaul and provide an experience akin to being part of a real team.

Attacking play is a cornerstone of PES 2012, and the new game benefits from a more open approach that allows users to dictate the pace of movement, with all-new AI elements incorporated so team mates make runs and offer support in one-on-one situations. Players make useful dummy runs to draw defenders, and this offers users greater options to move the ball around when they are being closed down. Thus, the team works together a more cohesive unit, reacting to the movements of the player with the ball, and working to force the opposing team into mistakes.

Zonal marking and positional defending are also massively enhanced; ensuring players are forced to work harder to split the opposition defence. Meanwhile a new cursor switching system has been implemented using the right analogue stick to switch to any player on the field. This allows users to pick a team mate anywhere on the pitch, thereby allowing players to react to threats faster, and to shut down attacks more quickly. Hold up play is being tweaked to give even greater control. AI defenders are able to hold a much tighter defensive line, position themselves better and track opponents more efficiently. The off-the-ball switching also extends to key set pieces, such as goal kicks, corners, free kicks and throw-ins, and allows users to target a specific player and send them on runs or to drag defenders out of position, and allows for quick breaks and space to be exploited more easily.

The physicality of top-level football is represented as PES 2012 extends the jostling system of its predecessor. Defenders rely on their strength and stature to force a player from the ball as strikers and play makers make use of unique attributes to beat their markers. Tighter, more accurate collisions see players tumbling dependent on how they are knocked off the ball. Crucially, control is not lost, allowing the stumbling player to be brought directly back under control.

The result is a game that, more than ever, truly represents the key attributes of the world’s greatest players, but without sacrificing balance and allowing single players to waltz undefended through a game. Coupled with heavily tweaked animation, more detailed lighting techniques, a wider variety of player styles, improved dead-ball situations, expanded tactics and a new customisable pass feature, means that PES 2012 truly captures the essence of top-flight football.

“Team work is what separates the world’s greatest teams from their peers, and is the hub of everything within PES 2012,” added Takatsuka. “PES 2012 focuses on the core elements of top-level football: attacking play, freedom of movement, the creation of space, and working together as a unit both up field and in defence. These elements combine to create a game that flows and ebbs like a real match, with individual shows of brilliance changing a game, and more control over every aspect of play within a wide-ranging yet instinctive control system. PES 2012 will turn the heads of fans everywhere.”

A little bank holiday surprise from Konami this afternoon in the form of new screens and an accompanying press release for PES2012 which can be found below :

KONAMI shows PES 2012 improvements

Konami Digital Entertainment GMbH today revealed the first in-game images from its forthcoming PES 2012 title, showcasing the newly-implemented movements and animations the new game enjoys.

The new screens show a variety of situations from within PES 2012 that have been bolstered by new animations, visual enhancements and control elements. The Tokyo-based team has worked hard to ensure PES 2012 is a more fluid and playable experience, with the jostling system used in last years game now enhanced to offer proper bodily contact and physical reactions, while close control and the team AI has been reworked to provide a more realistic recreation of real football.

As such, PES 2012 gives the player total control, with dribbling now refined, while passing and build-up play are enhanced by AI that ensures teammates will make dummy runs and support the player with the ball.

PES 2012 will be released later in the year.

So it would appear that Konami are keen to emphasise that PES2012 will indeed see improvements in the animations department along with enhanced collisions which was always going to be welcome, especially if it is all going to add up to a more fluid gameplay experience. It is also encouraging to read that dribbling will be more refined (along with close control) because for as much as the dribbling mechanics were excellent in theory and certainly a strength of PES2011, the execution was just a little off in its consistency and responsiveness. Close control was lacking especially in first touch and taking down airborne passes so if these areas were to see improvement they would make a pretty big difference by themselves.

As for the screens themselves, they dont give too much away but they do hint at a couple of things. First of all and probably most striking is the screen showing Sneijder appear to take a hit from De Rossi. Note the enhanced level of detail in Sneijders face which shows him emoting after the collision, right down to neck vein and muscle detail to go along with the contorted expression on his face. A small detail and certainly not one we will be seeing from a playing angle but a nice touch nonetheless. It is of course hard to read too much into a still image when trying to arrive at a conclusion regards fluidity and variety in animation but in the Sneijder/De Rossi screen it certainly looks like player interaction will be improved in terms of offering visual feedback to the player.

Moving on to the Spain/England screen, we have what is very much a familiar PES pre-release asset but it does look to show some potential improvements regards lighting in night time matches which any PES player will opine was quite possibly PES2011s achilles heel in terms of the visuals. Kit detail and how it sits on the player models looks a bit more natural too, though Capdevilla does look as though he has piled on a few pounds. Player models generally look a touch better (more athletic?) and while these screens might not show vast improvement in appearances, they do display a little more in the way of smoothness of texture though whether this is a result of a touch up or added filter for the screens themselves is anybodys guess for the moment. Still, it is good to see that we are getting some screenshots that show night time lighting straight from the off.

Finally, we have the Robinho close up. This one has proved to be a favourite for us at WENB as while it doesnt give anything away at all regards gameplay, it does clearly show that PES still has a great eye for small details in kit design (numbering/lettering on Cassanos shirt) and the way Robinho is emoting also worthy of note. Again we see the little details in neck muscle and facial muscle detail but we also get a glimpse of further detail in the form of sweat forming on the Brazilian superstars brow and forehead. Also, does it not also look as though the crowd might be more varied? Hard to tell again if this is a result of the asset having undergone some touching up but it could be that pitchside ambience and detail might see some further improvement.

So from starting the month of May not really any the wiser as to what would be happening with PES2012 we find ourselves ending the month having had two releases of announcements and assets. Hopefully this form continues for the remainder of PES2012s pre-release cycle and you just now WENB will be there to cover it every step of the way! Stay tuned.

KONAMI reveals further additions to gameplay at Los Angeles Expo

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH will further outline new, key advances to PES 2012 at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. The publisher will reveal a first trailer to showcase vital new elements to the game, which will be released in Autumn 2011 for PlayStation(R)3, Xbox 360(R), Windows PC, Wii, PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) and PlayStation(R)2, and which is the only video game with to feature the exclusive use of the official UEFA Champions LeagueTM and UEFA Europa LeagueTM competitionslicence.

PES 2012 continues KONAMI’s determination to listen to its fanbase and make key improvements to the aspects the audience demands. Thus, the focus for PES 2012 is to ensure the highest level of playability, challenge and realism for the game, whilst also improving the level of control offered to users. Fundamental changes to all areas of its AI have been made following user feedback. Similarly, teamwork is central to how the game moves and feels, enabling fans to replicate anything they would see in a real match.

The trailer will be revealed for the first time at KONAMI’s pre-show presentation, and perfectly illustrates how the new additions benefit the PES experience.

Active AI: PES 2012 strives to recreate the movement and team ethic of real football, and Active AI plays a vital role in this. Players will no longer flock to a ball, but will make intelligent runs to create space and draw markers, while others will make themselves available, instigate runs, and visibly call for the ball. In the box, support players will make diagonal decoy runs, full backs will overlap on the wings and midfielders will provide support from behind the ball. The new Active AI routines ensure the flow of a match is more natural, with specific routines for both attack and defence. Hold-up play implemented last year has been improved for easier control with more effectiveness. Defending as a unit plays a key role, and players now hold a tight line, check on the distance between each other, track back as a unit, and fill in for each other. As individuals they also make better decisions to close space, block and tackle.

Jostling: Physicality is a key component in PES 2012, with player strength one of their key individual attributes, and having a vital effect on how they can use their strength to win the ball in a one-on-one situation. Players now fall depending on how they are challenged, with more realistic animations used to show the challenges between two jostling players.

Graphics: Several aspects of the game have enjoyed a huge overhaul. Player facial expression is now much richer and the lighting effects are more natural, while new cameras show off the huge variety of pitch-side movement, with more detail on and around the game than ever before.

Off The Ball Control: Equally key to opening up PES 2012 is the ability to highlight any player at any time. A new system has been implemented, allowing users to switch players with ease. In defence, the right stick is now used to select any outfield player, while set pieces are also enhanced through its use. Goal kicks, corners, free kicks and throw-ins now let the user quickly take control of any player off the ball, enabling clever runs which create space for an attack.

Referee AI: Referees are also crucial to general game flow and their AI has been greatly enhanced to ensure fewer interruptions to play. Decisions are improved, and advantage is played much more regularly in offside and free kick scenarios. As such, refs will only intervene when truly necessary, but they will show cards if necessary once play has broken down.

Pass Support: Accessed through the new personal player settings, Pass Support allows users to determine the level of AI assistance when passing the ball. Players can opt for one of five settings from full support, right up to full veteran setting which switches off all assistance so that the direction, weight and speed of every pass is at their disposal.

“We are really pleased to implement so many improvements within the areas that our fans wanted changed,” commented Jon Murphy, European PES Team Leader at Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “PES 2012 is about matching real football, whilst ensuring an unrivalled gameplay experience. The trailer highlights many of the innovations we have added, and, more importantly, how they benefit the game. There’s plenty more to come, but for now we look forward to seeing how fans react.”

KONAMI will be detailing further key enhancements to PES 2012 in the coming months.

PES 2012 will be released for PlayStation(R)3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, Wii, PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) and PlayStation 2 in Autumn, 2011.

Goalkeepers

Often the difference between a good football game and bad one, you’ll be glad to know that the shot stoppers in the E3 build of PES 2012 are rather good.

During my time with the game, which consisted of six matches (set at 10 minutes), I only encountered one genuine mistake. Now, I don’t know about you, but I think that is an impressive ratio for a football game that is still in development.

If you were to compare the goalkeepers in the E3 builds of PES 2011 and PES 2012, the latter would be vastly superior in every single aspect. That includes animations (more on those later), realism and reliability.

For instance, in my second match (I was playing as Spain), Iker Casillas made a superb double save which you would struggle to come across in the retail version of PES 2011 let alone the E3 build. The fact that he reacted so promptly to the rebound after his first save, is what made the entire scenario so impressive. The Spaniard didn’t get up and then stand around like a zombie admiring Pique’s beard for a couple of seconds; he got up as soon as realistically possible and made the second save.

One area where the virtual shop stoppers could use a little work is one-on-ones, but that is just me nitpicking. Standout moments like the one mentioned above combined with the general reliability, even at this early stage, provide enough evidence to suggest that the goalkeepers in PES 2012 could be the best in the series to date.

Passing and Shooting

The passing and shooting systems in PES 2012 are pretty much exactly the same as PES 2011. However, there are a couple of new additions which influence these particular facets of the game ever so slightly. Thankfully, both additions have a positive effect.

First up, you have the tweaked ball physics which provide a much more realistic feel to the overall passing and shooting. It’s extremely hard to describe the exact effect, but don’t be surprised to see the ball occasionally bobble across the turf after a poorly hit pass or shot.

Secondly, in a move that is sure to delight the hardcore football gamers, Konami have finally included an option which allows players to adjust the level of support they get with their passes. The option, known as Pass Support, throws five different settings at your disposal. By default the Pass Support settings are set to three bars, meaning you have some control over the weight, direction and speed of your passes. If you want full control over everything, you just need to adjust the settings accordingly.

The fully manual passing system takes a while to get used to as you’d expect, but if you can get to grips with its intricacies, you can really pull off some wonderful passing moves. Think of it like getting used to the new passing system back in PES 2011 and you’ll get some idea of the learning curve.

Unfortunately, the fully manual settings have only found their way to the passing system at the moment and do not apply to the shooting system is PES 2012. With a while to go until the game is released, there is a possibility that Konami could announce fully manual shooting at a later date, but it is more than likely that particular feature will not make the cut in PES 2012.

Set Pieces

Good news, the penalty system in PES 2012 is nothing like the one in PES 2011. Gone is the system that only Einstein could understand and back is the more traditional penalty system seen in PES games of the past. It might not be the best penalty system ever, but it works well and is dead easy to get to grips with.

Right, with that out of the way, let’s move onto the best new feature in PES 2012. I am, of course, referring to off the ball control during free kicks, corner kicks, goal kicks and throw-ins. It’s a feature which you will forget to use during your first few matches in PES 2012, but when you eventually do, you will wonder how you did without it.

Just received a free kick in a dangerous area on the wing and want to knock the ball into your star striker so he can try and score?! Flick the right stick in the direction of your star striker’s position and he will be highlighted. You can then move him around to a position you like, press the cross button and whip the ball in. He might not score, but you have certainly given him a better opportunity to do so. It’s incredible, it really is. It’s also very intuitive and easy to understand, meaning players of all skill levels can give it a go.

During my time with the game, I actually managed to use this new feature to score a goal via a corner kick. It felt genuinely rewarding and satisfying, just like scoring a goal should. It was all my work; I didn’t need to rely on anything or anyone else.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Even the most ardent PES fan would admit that player AI in PES 2011 wasn’t perfect. For every great moment, there was almost always a silly one on the horizon to counter it. Well, it seems like Konami have taken on board the feedback in regards to AI and, I must say, the results are very impressive.

First of all, AI players on your team will now actively make realistic overlapping runs. Think Patrice Evra for Manchester United or Dani Alves for Barcelona and you’ll get what I mean. In fact, I played as Barcelona and just as he does in real life, Dani Alves was bombing forward at every single opportunity. Not just like a headless chicken either, the runs he was making were intelligent and, more importantly, realistic. You know that long ball Xavi and Iniesta love to play to Dani Alves, it’s possible to replicate that in PES 2012 (if you’re good enough) with a stunning degree of accuracy.

The intelligent running doesn’t just apply to the full-backs either; it applies to pretty much every single attack minded player on your team. Midfielders will make dummy runs to create space and they won’t just run in straight lines either. They will make intelligent diagonal runs as well, something which was very rarely seen in PES 2011. Of course, it’s up to you to decide how you want to utilise these runs and which player you want to pass to. Do you let a dummy run be just that or do you pull a fast one and try to get that player through for a scoring opportunity? The decision is yours, but the fact that you have all these options at your disposal is just mind boggling.

Konami have also paid some attention the defensive AI in PES 2012 as well. The defensive AI in PES 2011 was quite good, but at times players has the tendency to bunch up which hurt the overall gameplay and, well, didn’t reflect the overall realistic nature of the game very well. Those days have now gone, as defenders and (to a certain extent), midfielders perform their non-attacking duties with a high level of realism.

For instance, if you have a 4-4-2 formation, your team (depending on your strategy/tactics) will consist of two banks of four and the defensive movement of the players (defenders and midfielders) will be much more realistic when compared to PES 2011. Defenders won’t just follow and track one player, if they sense danger in a nearby area they will swoop in to try and cover. It’s all very subtle, but changes/improvements to the AI like this will only help enhance the overall quality of the gameplay.

Visuals

Much like its predecessor, PES 2012 looks great; even at this early stage. Player likenesses are even better than before, kit detail has been upped a level and, most noticeably, the lighting is vastly superior to PES 2011. Oh and square nets are in too, but you knew that already, right?!

Animations have also received some attention, quite a few new ones have been added and the majority of the older ones have been tweaked for added fluidity and realism. These improvements in the animation department shine ever so brightly during gameplay as you glide across the pitch with Messi like a graceful ballerina. Not that Messi is a ballerina, of course!

Finally, PES 2012 might not have a super slick looking collision system underneath its hood, but it doesn’t really need one. This might sound a little crazy, but it has its own little system and it uses it rather well from what I have seen so far. There’s no over the top coming together of players, instead everything just looks natural. Players “bounce” off each other quite realistically, falling or stumbling to the turf without much fuss. It’s not flashy, it’s just simple and, you know what, it works really well.

Verdict…so far

The foundations for a truly great football game were laid down by Konami with PES 2011. The next game in the series just needed to build on those foundations by adding a few key gameplay elements. From what I have seen so far, if PES 2012 continues to improve at its current rate, there’s a strong possibility we could be graced with the best PES game to date.

So there you have it!

Watch out for a more indepth preview from WENB later today, as well as a quite epic podcast from myself and Suffwan early hours.

.
Q. What does UEFA strengthening their relationship with Konami mean for PES 2012? E.g. Menu Design, endorsements etc.

A. The front screen is now a full UEFA.com screen, with a new ticker at the bottom. Also, menus now have CL highlights playing behind

Q. Does the weather conditions have an affect on movement of the ball? Like when it rains.

A. More announcements forthcoming

Q. Can you say if the player models look smoother and more polished now? In 11 they looked like they needed anti-aliasing.

A. Player models now look great in widecam. New levels of detail, with brand new lighting for day and night settings.

Q. What about cursor switching is it fixed?

A. Cursor change is indeed fixed. L1 works great, although now you can change player with the right stick ala FIFA.

Q. How is shooting, i felt it was too automatic in 2011, couldn't really aim at near post often. from a angle

A. Shooting is more like the older games. More control, and result make more sense. New shooting animations, and new ball physics

Q. Are player models, turf textures and details to pes 2010 levels?

A. Yes! Graphical detail matches/surpasses PES 2010. Finally no more inconsistency like PES 2011

Q. Did u try the Broadcast cam? Is it wider and less zoomed in than last year?

A. New broadcast cam is wonderful, we never switched to wide. It shows more of the pitch, and sits still like traditional widecam

Q. What about coaches and subs are they moving while playing a match?

A. in PES 2012 you can see subs warming up, managers moving, and ground staff/camera men walking around the pitch

Q. Is the commentary improved ? PES commentary sucks TBH

A. Commentary I've not heard, but expect it to be rubbish (sorry, person opinion)

Q. Does the grass look real ? becuase in pes 11 it looks flat?

A. Grass looks more lush. Different cuts for different stadiums promised, and, BIG NEWS, different camera angle for different stadium

Q. Any shooting details mate ? Do they connect well ?

A. It feels great, especially with the feeling of the player hitting the ball.

Q. Will we be seeing specific running animations for specific players - just to add to that individuality?

A. Running aminations are back! So players like Messi and Ronaldo have their own, and there are tonnes more that you can assign

Q. Are there any improvements to crossing?

A. Crossing is similar, but feel different thanks to new ball physics. Not massive change though

Q. Do you know something about the computer difficulty settings? On what diffeculty did you play, and are they harder?

A. We played on the hardest, and it was tough. New defensive AI on top teams is tough to break down, first match, no shots on goal!

Q. Are pacy players able to pull away from sluggish defenders?

A.Yes! catch up bug has gone!Quick players stay ahead and can get way from slow players! More on this in the podcast with examples

Q. Is dribbling improved? Star dribblers are still present ?

A. Dribbling massively improved thanks to better responsiveness and more animations. Messi is a joy to control.

Q. Are there any air dual/contact at corners for example, or other?

A. Players fending off people in off the ball movements, looks more realisitc, but not over physical. Can see collisions at corners

Q. Any news on game modes? Or too early, also any changes in formation screen?

A. Yes too early for new game modes. As for formation screen it has changed when viewing players now. Do you remember ISS 64? Players now have letter grade for abilities for quick view.I.E. Messi A for dribbling, D for defending etc

A. Fave player was Xavi. Passing ability was amazing, even on manual.

Q. Has the issue of your teamates sprinting away from goal whilst attacking or the animation lag been addressed?

A. Player runs are now amazing. Also, zero animation lag in PES 2012. 100% more fluid. Big player run announcement coming soon...

Q. Are the trick moves still mapped out like PES 2011, or are they back on the right stick any change there?

A. Tricks as a whole seem same as PES 2011 right now, although I hear it will change.

Q. We know nets are square and look nice, but do they behave realisticly when ball hits them ?

A. Nets feel good, not too sure what else to say as happy with the way they behave

Q. Any change to throw ins/goalkicks? eg. 3 sec to long throw, ai throws long randomly if players marked, gk still pass to nearest.

A. Throwins and goal kicks massive change. Now you flick right stick to select who you want to pass to. Big improvement

Q. How is the overall speed of the game, faster of slower than 11 ?

A. Similar speed to PES 2011 in gameplay

A. yes, finally! Camp Nou felt so different from other stadiums. Amazing preset camera angle

Q. Game speed option is still in?

A. Yes, game speed option still in, although I never changed.

Q. Any improvements on freekicks (not the shooting kind...the crossing ones)?

A. Freekicks feel different, again from ball physics. Both crossing and shooting ones have more dip and ball movement

Q. Is it easy to use hold up play? Are through pass assisted like in pes 2011?

A. Very easy to hold up play. No more worry about physical contant. No more easy throughball through defence, completely gone!

Q. What happens when the ball goes out for throw-ins or fouls? Does game flow or cutscene?

A. Still black screen when ball out of play

Q. have they got rid of nasty shoots + the bicycle kicks in silly areas?

A. Jumping volleys are out! no more silly jumping volleys from outside the box.

Q. Shirt selection any changes to 2011? As seen in trailers - do the sweat on players faces/body appear gradually in game?

A. Players do sweat, not noticed though. no change in shirt seltion screen or options

Q. Defenders letting a ball fly past them standing bug fixed or not?

A. Defenders don't let the ball fly past them, they are more aware of where the ball is

Q. How good are the pes 2012 graphics on a scale of 1-10?

A. upclose 10, wide cam 8

So there we have it a massive Q&A session from Adam massive thanks to him and his hard work as always.

Long version

TELL ME HOW YOU REALLY FEEL

There’s a lot that can be said for the flaws of last years release. Perhaps it’s always easy to focus on the negatives, but as I’ve said many times on the boards and podcasts, PES 2011 was a few improvements away from being very special.

It was the first game this generation that got any sort of media respect, and was the first game that officially stopped the rot when it came to sales on a yearly basis.

What I wanted to do was focus on certain negatives in PES 2011, ones not so obvious, but fed into other issues. Maybe something easier for me to spot, as I truly fell in love with PES 2011 preview code, but something happened in between that and retail which left a bad taste in my mouth. It also left me scratching my head.

Reason being, it’s not as if the changes were night and day, but a collection of tweaks gave a different feel and outcome. Take dribbling and defending. There was a greater balance in preview code, but once shipped new defensive maneuvers and emphasis on physicality changed things drastically. For example, that stumbling animation? Not in preview code. The falling down face first when passing under pressure? Not in preview code. Dribbling feeling heavy at times and easy to defending against? Not in preview code.

Lets develop that last point. Dribbling in context in PES 2011 is actually excellent. Beyond laboring the point of inertia, it’s well developed and thought out, with realism the key point. No foot sliding, no turning into impossible angles, all believable. Problem is, it lacked fluidity. It also screamed lack of faith from Konami, as they clearly weakened its effectiveness in release code. The slowing down of a dribbler’s speed, and implementing what we now call the catch up bug, created an extremely frustrating experience.

It’s an offset of variables all hindering each other. Slowing down dribbling speed and creating heavy touches, but at the same time making any physical presence powerful, with the ability to stumble the player and take him out of your control. Then there was the fact defenders never committed into a challenge, meaning your nice two-touch dribbles that created space never allowed you the opportunity to put distance between you and the player you’re facing. Because A) he was never trying to win the ball, just contain, and B) Konami were worried about players being able to fly past people so they put in a catch up mechanism. So even if you did beat a man, you wouldn’t be able to stay ahead for long.

Lets keep this web of evil spinning.

So the physicality in the game created a feeling of not wanting to hold onto the ball for any length of time when under pressure. Mix in inconsistent referees that you never really trust, and it makes the player never trusting the game will play out fairly. Now you know how Mourinho feels.

So not wanting to hold the ball meant you’d pass, and pass quickly. Here we realized the flaws of the ball physics and general rules a player could break. Inconsistent outcomes with accuracy and power bar never gave any sort of satisfaction. Passes were easy to misplace without reason. The new freedom elements were a godsend, but the directness and laser guided feel and excessive speed made it all look and feel unrealistic. It was like setting the coordinates to a missile and watching it go.

It almost felt like players would think the same, avoiding through ball interceptions as if their leg might get blown off. And even if they did intercept, passing it first time was not allowed. Unwritten law apparently.

Wind back to the catch up bug, as I feel it has a lot to do with shooting. Again it’s all about taking your time when in space in front of goal, but even when put clean through, there’s never any feeling of trust in the game playing out things how you would want. Players would catch up in an instant, and getting that time and space would be at premium. Especially with the inconsistent outcome of the shot, and the time it took your player to actually fire it off.

That leads nicely onto keepers. No need to digress.

So, starting from something like dribbling you’ve seen so many elements intertwine right through the spine of the game, where one small issue would give birth to many more. That’s where this year’s up coming game comes in. A game on the face of it doesn’t seem to do a lot, but the key gameplay fixes and changes create a domino effect on the rest of the product. Correcting one mistake, and you potentially correct them all.

This is PES 2012.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

After meeting up with Jon (Murphy) and Steve (Merrett), we quickly got into the game, and just as quickly realized the new post-E3 code was substantially different from the initial code we sampled a few months back. So THAT’S why we couldn’t write about it.

The gameplay has been tightened up massively, with fluidity, consistency, and a feeling of completeness when playing the game. All elements missing from PES 2011. So from here on in, let’s start again with our impressions of PES 2012. We’ll forget the last podcast was ever recorded. Clean slate coming in.

With that in mind let’s discuss the initial presentation improvements, from the front end to pre-match niceties. The front menu is now officially endorsed by UEFA, with a background and bottom of screen ticker linked to the website. Moving between game modes, exactly the same as PES 2011 in the layout, you now have real life footage playing in the background, rather than a single unknown player doing his stuff. The footage we saw looked like Champions League highlights, mainly of Messi tearing apart yet another defence.
Our options there after were limited, as the code only allowed one-off exhibition matches to be played, in the Camp Nou, and only at night. Choosing our teams, which consisted of top European and International outfits, we noticed a new look to the selection process. Picking the teams was still similar to PES 2011; in the way you have two horizontal bars to pic region/league, and the actual team. In PES 2012 you now get a different grading system of the teams, yet again doing away with the hexagon.

Now you get 6 grades for each specific category, ranging from A to D. The criteria are the same, so you have Offense, Technique, Physicality, Defense, Tactics, and Speed. The letter (as mentioned previously) is in a retro ISS 64 boxart font style. Certainly one for the hardcore fans to spot!

Teams selected, and you can then get to pick kits, formation and settings. Team kit selection works the same way as last year, which is perhaps disappointing as confirms we won’t have 3rd kits again for PES 2012.

The formation screen is completely intact from PES 2011, but again the letter grading system in is place. By selecting a player, you now get a picture of him, and beside his mug shot 6 grades showing key abilities you might want to know more than others.

The bottom menus have changed too, with the first four icons linked to the new trigger tactics for the d-pad, which you initiate on the fly. As reported, the d-pad isn’t a control option by default, allowing Konami to utilize the control set-up in a similar to FIFA.

What’s interesting about this element though is that it’s extremely deep. So not only are you changing the formation and playing styles, you can also change parameters even further to make them more obvious/subtle. Another weapon in the armory for the tacticians out there!

Into the match, and you’re first off greeted by a brand new tunnel sequence. It’s much busier than PES 2011, and more ambient. Players are more active, and interact with ground staff walking around them. As they walk onto the pitch you see cameramen congregated behind a barrier taking snaps, with a lone cameraman coming forward ready to wander along the line-up for the big screen close-up. Then a quick jump to players stretching and warming up, right before kick off.

DO YOUR TALKING ON THE PITCH

So with all the pre-match elements intricately described (just so I don’t have to mention them again in the future!), lets get on to the important stuff.

As the ref blows for kick off, a barrage of elements hit you almost instantly. AI, Camera, graphics, ambiance and ball physics. That’s just the first wave! Lets hit those first 5 elements, then.

AI is Konami’s big push this year, and you see it in abundance from the off. Players are so alive to what’s going on around you, and before you know it are making intelligent runs and supportive movements to cover or offer an easy pass. The few minutes of playing PES 2012 actually gives you a clear indication of just how lifeless PES 2011 was in this respect, and it’s the one key thing that has been lacking with the series for this generation.

But it’s not about dummy runs and forward runs trying to get behind a defense, it also about supportive runs and players around you giving you the opportunity to pass. Take Barcelona and AC Milan. Two different formations, and two different ways of playing. Milan’s way of playing is driven through the middle of the pitch, with width only created by the full backs. Options to pass therefore remain channeled down the middle, and means recycling the ball can be difficult due to the centre of the pitch often becoming over populated. Playing as Barcelona however gives you a completely different mindset. Width is always an option, with both wingers and full backs constantly getting forward and supporting attacks. The entire team is very compact, always moving and giving you an option every which way possible – completely differently to Milan.

The camera now swoops low and stays consistent with the flow of the game, always giving you the best view for what’s going on with the action on screen. The camera in PES 2011 was all about giving the broadcast experience, and while many fell in love with it at first, it wasn’t long before we were all yearning for a better scope for what was happening around the pitch, and had me wanting to get wide cam back. The wide cam does just that, sitting still rather than always moving all around the place.

Graphics in gameplay cam have been a sore point for PES fans over the years on this generation; with the game almost giving us a completely different look both close and from afar. Incredibly lifelike close in, PES has always failed to keep the level of detail once the match gets going.

PES 2012 see’s a gradual improvement, although right now it’s not what I would call fixed. There’s much more detail held now, with player physique and kit style (i.e. untucked shirt, wristbands) much more visible than before. It almost looked like the outline of a player’s body had been given a type of shading, emphasizing the differences between shapes. Puyol looked like a mini hulk, while Busquets looks slim and athletic. PES 2011 improved that element, but PES 2012 certainly takes that detail further.

It’s also nice to see a richer looking player surface, with the cut of the grass and believable textures giving you the illusion you’re playing on a wonderful pitch. And it’s not just the pitch that looks great; the entire stadium is something that is more prominent in the new camera angle. Playing in the Camp Nou, the viewpoint really gave the impression that you were watching an actual broadcast.

Now for the ambiance, and PES 2012 has really come a long way. It’s simply brilliant. Managers gesturing and walking around their technical area, ground staff walking around the pitch and behind the goal, and camera men who are on a base follow the play and move with the ball. The crowd (more visible on the fantastic new pitch side cam) animates subtly, but add to the overall visual and atmospheric experience, especially with them wearing the shirts of the home team. And while we’re yet to be able to truly judge the sound and how that element will add to the final experience, it’s already at an incredible high level that not even weird anecdotes from Champion and Beglin could ruin this one.

The final instant realization of change had to be ball physics, which have undergone a massive transformation. Less pace, less laser guided, and more free. For the first time since the PS2 days, the ball actually feels like it’s own entity in PES again. And that’s from the moment the ball is passed, to the way it’s controlled, and then passed on again – each element is key as in every moment you need to make sure the ball is your possession. The power in the passing is ever more key, with over hit passes requiring more care in bringing under control. You’ll also find the ball will curl and bobble in ways it simply hasn’t done on this generation.

After getting past the ‘Fantastic Five’, other key changes quickly become obvious. As you pass, move and dribble, the improved response times and fluidity in movement has been ramped up, with small added animations making it look better and of course make it more responsive.

The physicality has been worked on a great deal too, allowing for better ball retention and interaction with an opposition player. Gone are the days of cumbersome dribbling feel and control being taken out of your hand via a stumbling animation. Things are more seamless, and always keeping you in full control of everything going on during the game. Players will palm off players trying to subject them to pressure from behind and the side, and includes seeing this off the ball too. In the same essence, players are able to ride and skip over challenges, keeping things moving,

The changes also impact how you might approach the defensive side of the game, as you’re more likely to be punished by a mistimed challenge. Something we noticed this playtest is that pressuring a player as he is receiving the ball is sometimes beneficial, as the impact could put him off balance, or make him miscontrol the ball. Other times though, a little bit late in getting there, and you could either be giving away a free kick in a dangerous area or see a player turn you easily with a touch and leave you for dead.

Talking of leaving for dead, fans will be happy to hear the catch up bug has completely gone. Quicker players when past their men will be able to stay ahead, and sometimes even extend the gap between them and the defender. It’s not an exploit however, as you can still contain by holding R2 and X. Suff got the hang of this rather quickly, and was very good at tackling as a whole.

Moving onto other fixes, and I’m happy to report referees were 99% awesome. Calling fouls, playing advantage, and booking players after play had stopped. The 1%? Me and Suff noticed perfectly legitimate slide tackles from the front or side were penalized more often than not. Needs work.

Something that needs less work than expected is Goal keepers. Wow, what a turn around. After being the key element that could possibly ruin an amazing product, it’s already achieved a respectful level, with me and Suff seeing them make saves they would never make in PES 2011. More importantly, they would also make saves in a fresh new animation brand new for PES 2012. We’re talking one-handed saves, reactions to one on one situations etc etc. Throughout the playtest we had a lot more trust in them when reacting to saves. Simply put they caught more and spilled less, with everything spilt usually pushed away from danger whenever possible. From here on in we would like to see much more animation work, and as Suff put it ‘theatrics.’

Shooting also could do with some work, and from the entire playtest, was probably the one key part of the game that could do with a total change. It was odd, as ball physics for passing, crossing etc felt great, but shooting (like in PES 2011) felt extremely floaty.

It didn’t affect you too much when one on one, but shot outside the box usually ended up comfortably in the keepers arms. Not to suggest crackers from outside the box weren’t attainable, it was just they were few and far between, and the feeling of the correct outcome from a controller input just wasn’t there.

I guess it’s also worth rounding up our impressions about dedicating actual time to the animations. It’s a difficult subject, as comparisons to FIFA will always be there. Right now PES still needs work regarding this, as while they’ve made great additions to make the game extremely fluid, it still doesn’t compete with EA’s series. For me and Suff it’s more than enough in it’s own right, but to really make an impact across all fanbases they need to consider a drastic change for the future.

HALF TIME

Overall then, at this stage, PES 2012 is playing a fantastic game of football. It corrects the wrongs of PES 2011, and adds new and exciting elements to go a step further. Expect updated impressions late July from WENB, where we can tell you how the game is looking closer to release.

So far, PES 2012 is looking like it’s on a road to greatness, passing the likes of PES 5 on it’s way there. Yes, that good.

Interview van John Murphy met CVG

PES 2012 will support D-pad control
Konami sticks with feature due to fan demand

Konami has told CVG that D-pad control will be supported in PES 2012 - despite the company's desire to ditch it.

The code the firm showed at E3 earlier this month only allowed for control via the analogue sticks. The news apparently left a handful of vocal fans disgruntled - particularly those that rely on the pad to execute sharp turns during tournament gameplay.

As a result of the feedback, Konami - as community-centric as ever - has now elected to keep the feature in the game. However, it has warned fans that the option won't be in the series forever.

"We've decided not to take out D-Pad this year, because a some fans have told us that they still use it - particularly those ultra-competitive ones who rely on it to quickly change direction," PES Team Leader Jon Murphy told CVG. "The game will default to the twin sticks, but the option will be there to play with a D-Pad.

"Eventually, it will have to come out, so we're encouraging people to move over to the analogue stick. We made a lot of progress last year in a lot of areas, which included freedom of movement. That's a little bit wasted if you use the D-pad, so we don't expect the option will be there in the next couple of years."

CVG caught a behind-the-scenes glimpse at PES's new feature yesterday, and walked away very impressed indeed. Seabass and co's focus this time round has obviously been on pure gameplay, rather than atmospheric 'trinkets'.

Major alterations include a new smart AI, which not only sees CPU-controlled players making much earlier runs, but ensures that defensive players provide more intelligent cover. One of the cleverest new touches relates to set pieces, free kicks and throw ins: players can now use a flick of the right stick to select the recipient of the ball, then manually make a darting run and call for delivery.

The accuracy of goal kicks have also been dramatically improved (hurrah!), whilst the perpetual problem of odd gaps appearing between defence and midfield (and, therefore, the opponent running for yards and yards unchallenged) appears to have been fixed.

"I really do believe that the offering we've got this year will pull some fans back from the competition," said Murphy. "Perhaps we'll see another year when people buy both games, but after six months, we want to make sure they trade-in only one of them - and it's not ours.

"[FIFA] has the atmosphere, the crowds and certain licences we don't - and everybody knows they've got better commentary than us. I can't see that changing. And some of the stuff they're doing with the collisions looks great, depending how it works as you actually play.

"But if you want pure gameplay, I think we'll smash them this year. We've got so many things going for us, but just the lightness of touch and the way the players move independently is fantastic. You notice it instantly.

"You can put the pad down and see your team's movement as individuals. I really hope we can get the demo out to people as soon as possible, because it's all very well me talking about these things - it's when you play it that you see instantly.

"We don't want everyone, it's not about that - we want the front runners, the opinion formers, the players who tell their friends "you've got to check out PES this year". We want to bring them back, and I think we can."

Ik speel BAL mode in 2011.

Dingen die mij opvielen:
Ik speel nu bij Lazio en ik sta 3de in de EL.

Celtic heeft zelfde aantal punten maar doelsaldo is -6
Lazio doelsaldo is +2

Guys I thought I'd pop in here and say Konami have nailed PES 2012.

Preview code has hit some place, mine is around a week away, and trusted sources are telling me the games has come on another level. We're talking shooting, keepers, more added animations (don't take it as FIFA level, its not) etc, the game is loads better.

Also, there's some huge announcements coming at Gamescom. So huge, that I can't describe how happy I am. We're talking modes and licenses. When you hear, you will cry with joy.

But I've been sworn to secrecy, so much so I can't even hint. But it's better this way, Gamescom will be incredibly epic. PES is back, in a way not many are expecting.

Yeh pure gameplay element.

OPE PES 2012 Playtest Impressions

The Only Pro Evolutions "team" - Jake Harris and The Editor

Where do I start?

Despite the truly horrific weather, it was a hugely enjoyable day out in Shoreditch. I set my alarm for 9 o'clock, but even after a late night session of PES 2011, I found myself waking up at 8.30 due to pure PES-related excitement.

Ever since I was told that my name was on the guest-list for today's playtest in London, I found it pretty uncomfortable to contain my excitement - despite having a rather mischievous trip to Gran Canaria to keep my mind off of things! Of course, I found other things to keep my brain focused for my week away, but as a hardcore PES fan, I'll admit that this playtest was always in the back of my mind.

Before today, I had never played any game at such an early stage of development. It was a good feeling!

After getting off at Liverpool Street underground station, I rushed along Shoreditch High Street and finally arrived at the venue at midday, just in time for the first playtest session. To my surprise, there were only a handful of people there playing PES 2012 - and fortunately, that scenario remained for the next two hours.

I finished my arranged session and was delighted to see that only another 6 or so players walked through the door for the second showing at 2pm. Naturally, I stayed and continued to play. And for the record, the PESFan employees and Konami staff had no problems with me sticking around!

Originally, it was planned that 32 people wouldturn up to play in 2 booths. 16 people were due to play on either Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, over two sessions spread across 4 hours between 12 and 4 o'clock. But ultimately, the turnout was poor - not that I'm complaining. I was there for both sessions and had about an hour of game time over the afternoon - although my 9-8 penalty shoot-out win probably contributes to a significant chunk of that time.

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff. I'll move on to the playtest...

Shooting
There's plenty of room for improvement, based on this particular code. Don't get me wrong, Konami have worked hard and the shooting has improved, generally. But based on what I saw today, they still have much work to do before the game's official release later this year.

Inside the box, I have no complaints. However, it's very hard to score from distance, because the shots are way too floaty, most of the time. You need to hold the shoot button down for a while, and even then, the shot doesn't cause any real problems for the goalkeeper. Even if you hit the "sweet spot", I found it very hard for myself to get excited about the shot.

The lobbing on this game is also a little disappointing. The lobbing on PES 2011 was poor, and sadly, the same can be said for PES 2012. I managed to score two "lobs", but they did not look like lobs at all. They were way too low and powerful to be lobs, for me. The trajectory of the lobs were all wrong.

However, the word on the street is suggesting that Konami have fixed shooting. I just hope that lobs are taken into consideration too, as well as all other shot types. If they can fix all aspects of each shooting technique, I'll be a very, very, very happy PES fan, come October time!

Passing And Through Balls
You can play beautiful football. Precise one-twos are glorious. Players are there to help always keen, looking for the ball, even after passing the ball. Your fellow players are always aware, making effective diagonal runs. Passing triangles will be a big thing in PES this year.

It was awesome to break down my opponents' defences, passing in triangles. And for the record, it was not 'ping-pong' football. This kind of football takes brains.

If you want to dominate in PES 2012, you will need to master the art of 'pass and move'. It sounds simple, but I guarantee it will take time for you to become a pro.

I found the passing in PES 2011 to be very predictable and repetitive. Once you figured the game out, that was it. There was no more to it. This will not happen in PES 2012, I assure you.

Goalkeepers
The 'keepers have been improved very much so, but they are still a little suspect for me. At times, they can pull off some quite incredible saves. But in other instances, they are prone to make clumsy mistakes, in proper PES goalkeeping fashion.

For the record though, I will state that I found that the goalkeepers made less mistakes in this game, compared to PES 2011. When they did makes mistakes, it was realistic 90% of the time.

Yes, they do still spill it, but 9 times out of 10, they do it in a realistic way. I was watching someone play today who cut inside with Nani, had a powerful shot towards Neuer, and the German goalie spilled it, leaving an easy tap-in for Cristiano Ronaldo.

It's a shame I couldn't record any footage for you, because what you're reading probably isn't doing the game any justice.

Like I've suggested, please don't be upset. All players and spectators there yesterday agreed that these mistakes were realistic and we all said we understood why what happened, happened. If you're still upset, I implore you not to be so hasty.

In real life, even the best goalkeepers aren't robots. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes, every so often.

For Konami - and EA Sports too - it's very difficult, very delicate situation. To create a good football simulation, you have to make sure players aren't robots, using robots. For ultimate realism, you have to find the right mix.

I feel Konami are close to finding the right balance between realism, and ensuring that goalkeepers are still good enough to give players of whatever standard a decent challenge, on a long-term basis. A football game is ruined for me, once goalkeepers are sussed.

The goalkeepers in PES 2012 still need a little bit of work, but they have been imprroved immensely since PES 2011, in my opinion. A few tweaks here and there are needed, if Konami are going to nail it this year.

Referees and Officials
Referees have been improved, yes. But as you could well imagine, they are not perfect. They still call for random, silly and damn right peculiar "fouls".

Linesmen, on the other hand, are pretty much perfect. This is all due to the improved AI. Strikers are encouraged to keep up with play, and stay onside as much as possible.

The clueless wandering forwards who were always offside in PES 2011 are the thing of the past. I'm sure even Emmanuel Adebayor will be able to keep up with play this year!

Set Pieces
Penalties have been fixed. Hallelujah!

At last! Konami see sense and place the camera behind the penalty taker. Logic.

As you can see, this is all due to the fact that Konami have finally decided to revert back to the old PES days, where the camera is behind the penalty taker, rather than to the side of him. Not only that, but the penalty system in general has been simplified (improved) massively too.

All you need to do is hold down the shoot button for power. Unlike PES 2011, you can hold it down for a considerable amount of time, before your shot can be blasted over or wide. A power bar will also appear below your player.

Once you player begins his run up, you then are able to choose your direction. You can hold down the left stick for as long as you like. You can hold the stick down for as long as possible, your shot will remain on target - as long as you haven't held the shoot button down for too long, of course!

I only chipped penalty, and it looked good enough. To perform this action, all you need to do is press the dash button, during the players' run-up to the ball.

Including controlling the goalkeeping, the whole system has been improved through simple and logical re-introductions. I don't think I'll ever know why it took so long for Konami to sort this out.

Free kicks remain very similar to what they were like in PES 2011. That's probably all I can say. Although, I will tell you that the goalkeepers behave differently when dealing with free kicks.

One thing that annoyed me about PES 2011 was the fact that whenever a goalkeeper made a save, 99% of the time, the ball went out for a corner. Depending on where you shoot from, the ball rarely stayed in play, not allowing play to flow - just like it does in real life.

I had a free kick today with Wesley Sneijder. I didn't think it was going to go in, but I knew it was always going to trouble the goalkeeper. And it did.

Victor Valdez had to rush over to the over side of his goal, and he just managed to claw it, pushing it safely away from goal. It was a good save and the ball was safe. However, unlike PES 2011, my attack was still on because the ball had remained on the pitch.

Little things like this will make the game more entertaining, realistic and also much more varied - which is the most important factor for me. A football sim cannot be repetitive. To be a truly great football game, a player cannot expect anything, just like in real life. The perfect football game is something that can last for an entire year, at least - and PES 2012 looks like it could be the real deal!

Graphics
Graphics and player models have been slightly improved but for me, there isn't a huge improvement. Like Jon Murphy has stated many times, it's all about gameplay this year for the PES series.

I don't want to get you guys down, but there's not that much more to talk about regarding graphics. They have always been good enough, so I can safely remain content again this year for PES 2012 in terms of the game's visuals.

General Improvements
Auto kick off is gone. Embarrassingly, I'll admit that it took me a while for me to get used to this. And if you guys must know, I did get a few funny looks, when it was my turn to kick off... and I was just staring blank at a still screen!

The catch up bug has gone. From now on, Titus Bramble will not be able to catch up with Theo Walcott. Like today I experienced today, once you're away with David Villa, Michael Dawson will not catch you. Rest in peace, catch up bug. You will not be missed!

Player turning has been worked on well this year. It's much quicker and much more responsive. I found great delight turning with players like Messi, Sneijder, and Benzema.

The defences are much harder to break down, due to the improved AI. I often found myself facing my opponent camping 10 men behind the ball. Challengingly, it was very hard to break down at times. In PES 2012, players will have to be patient and could also benefit from thinking outside the box, trying to do something special, when attempting to break opponents down.

The crowd atmosphere is very good. Despite there being a fair bit of background noise (the PES 2011 Main Event Final going on in the background!), the matchday ambience was brilliant. Most importantly, there was one thing that stood out for me

I will assume that you have all watched a Spanish league match? You know that sound the home team crowd make when a shot goes just wide? That "oooohhh" sound boomed around the Camp Nou, when I fired a shot just past the post with Lionel Messi. I hope you understand?

New Additions To The Series
My favourite introduction to the PES series for 2012, is the right-trigger player switching feature. It's really, really, really useful. Like in FIFA, PES corners have always been predictable. In PES at least, this is not the case any more. Not for the first time, Konami have implemented a truly innovative feature.

Now, you are able to simply pick your target, control him making a clever run, trying to lose your marker, and then hit cross and see if you can pull off an effort on goal. The same applies for long throws. I will expect players to be rewarded for adopting a long ball style of play - for the first time ever in a football simulation.

PES has always been a brain-game. And this new feature is just one of many examples of why PES 2012 will need great concentration, if players are going to succeed. It's an absolutely fantastic new addition to the series.

Another one of my favourite introductions to the series this year, is the overlapping runs performed by your full backs. They're just simply incredible. Whether you're playing with Dani Alves or Javier Zanetti, they will always offer you support, making darting runs down the line.

Today I held up play with Samuel Eto'o, passed it out wide to the over-lapping Javier Zanetti, who pinged it into the box, allowing Diego Milito to head home. 1-0!

It was a supremely pleasing goal to score. One of many from today actually. Trust me, you will be able to score some incredibly pleasing goals this year, with some skill, patience and good timing.

The continuous throw ins are pretty smooth. They don't happen all the time, but when they do, you will be impressed, when you first see it. It's quite amazing to be blown away by something so simple.

The player faces, models and formations remain the same. However, players' faces can now be seen down the bottom of the formations screen, when you click on a player.

The stats of Wesley Sneijder, which can now be seen at the bottom of the formation screen.

I was impressed with the animated characters on the sidelines. The moving cameramen were cool. The ground employees walking around the stadium were great too. The crowd also wears the teams colours now, which adds to the realism factor. All added together, the game looks much more aesthetically pleasing.

Team grades are in this year. Yes, they're not going to blow anyone away, but it's very easy now to compare teams. According to the grading system, AC Milan are better than FC Barcelona. Maybe that will convince a few people use other teams more often, rather than just Messi's Barca?

AC Milan are the best club team on the game, according to the new 'team grading' system.

Football Life looks like it will be a direct replacement to Become A Legend. BAL was not there on the main menu, and it appears that FL has been substituted straight in for it. No details have been released revealing what Football Life will be about, but we are pretty certain that it will be some sort of an evolution of Become A Legend.

Final Thoughts
It's code from E3, so of course, Konami have added a lot since. But as this is all I've played, I will have to share my initial impressions, based on this particular code.

On the contrary, this isn't a bad thing. With early codes, you are able to spot mistakes in the game, and submit feedback (including this impressions post) to the Konami team. Ideally, arising problems will be addressed and fixed in time for the game's official release later this year. But for now, I will discuss the problems with PES 2012 - based on the E3 code.

The first thing that frustrated me was the lack of desire the players showed when going for the ball, especially when chasing a loose ball or running onto a pass. In my opinion, Konami need to make player sprinting a little quicker. Nothing major, but just a little speed boost that will make the game feel more sharper, giving everyone a less infuriating game.

The right-trigger player switching is an immense addition to the PES series. But it's not as straightforward as you might think. I won a goal kick with Victor Valdes, and tried to ground-pass it across my box to Dani Alves. Unfortunately, my pass was intercepted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and I found myself 1-0 down.

I did not investigate it thoroughly, but it seems to me that it's still better to go long. Although I'll admit, that this could be down to my own naivety.

Referees also need some more work. Although, they are excellent at times, handing out cards appropriately, there are still glimpses of catastrophic errors that we see now in PES 2011. The referees are much better and Konami have taken huge steps in the right direction, but work will still need to be done, looking at this particular code. Throughout the afternoon, I tried to get my players sent off, but after some truly horrific challenges, I wasn't even cautioned with a yellow card at times!

Although it's not necessarily a bad thing, I found that my passes didn't always find the man. True, it was frustrating, but I wouldn't suggest that this is a game breaker. The passing system in PES 2012 is hugely sensitive, so to achieve success in this game, concentration will be vital. Despite seeing one or two of my fellow playtesters yesterday become very frustrated by the game, I think this is a very good thing. Making the game more challenging is a positive step forward, in my opinion.

I will also give huge praise to the 'pitchside' camera option. We could only use one stadium, but it was still extraordinary using pitchside cam at the Camp Nou. You guys will love it.

Replays - during game and post goal - are the same. For me, no changes are needed. It's already good enough, so why change anything?

I can't recall seeing any injuries, so cannot comment on how much a player would be affected, after picking up an injury. Injuries were probably turned off, but I don't know for sure, as I didn't check. The option was greyed out.

Unfortunately, I can't say much more for player fatigue. I believe it was easier for the leading team, to score in the last 20 minutes or so. This could be due to fatigue, or maybe significant changes in the formations and playing style. That's all I can say, at this moment in time.

A few people asked on Twitter about about cursor changing. I had no problems. Although there were only 2 controllers, so I didn't get the chance to investigate a 2v2 match. However, as for 1v1 matches, I am confident when I say this; it's fixed.

Generally, players' first touches are much better. Obviously, the world class players are very unlikely to have poor first touches - maybe impossible. But that's a good thing surely, right? I couldn't imagine the uproar from the community, if players like Xavi, Sneijder and Fabregas are going to take poor touches on a regular basis.

Myself with OPE partner and legendary Xbox 360 PES option file creator, Daymos.

Alternatively, I had a Copa Libertadores exhibition match, playing as Estudiantes. Juan Sebastian Veron was class - a real stand out. But other players around him who were, well... poor, struggled to control the ball at times. It was probably a mixture of poor condition and poor stats, but world class players are going to stand out this year - and rightly so!

I don't want to jump aboard the hype train - not just yet. But I will stick my neck out for the time being, and say that Konami could provide us with a really, really, really special game this year. For such an early code, it's absolutely immense. However, for this E3 code, there's still a long way to go for Konami if they are to achieve worldwide recognition.

I will avoid comparing PES 2012 with the glory days of the PS2 days - but, with some tweaks here and there, I am confident Konami can trump the chumps this year.

Based on what I've played so far, I will state that PES 2012 is the biggest step forward Konami have made, since moving onto next-generation console gaming.

Benieuwd of dat wat gaat worden :{

PES 2012: THE PROREVO PLAYTEST IMPRESSIONS [ENGLISH]
19. Juli 2011 mrbasket 2 Kommentare

After the great German feedback for our playtest impressions, we decided to publish an English version of the full article Marvin (nickname: mrbasket) wrote. Our awesome teammember Ben (nickname: chaos) translated the whole article in several hours of hard work (fantastic job mate!) and here it comes for you guys.

Prorevo plays an early version of PES 2012

On this Bluray is our PES 2012 - test-version (E3-code)
A debug PS3, a flat screen TV, seven hours with an early version of PES 2012 (E3 code). It’s one of those days you’ve been waiting nearly forever. In the end, it’s one of those days that are over all too fast. With this article, we want to give you our impressions of that version of PES 2012 and explain, what we were impressed with and what still has to be fixed by the Japanese developer team. During the test, we wrote nearly 12 pages of notes and took down every little detail. We hope to offer you the most detailed preview of PES 2012: independently and objectively. Enjoy!

Just a reminder: we cannot answer questions regarding game modes and licences. We had several national and club teams available for exhibition matches. Furthermore, we will not show any inofficial pictures or movies. We were not allowed to take pictures/record movies as the game is still in development. – But there’s enough official stuff from KONAMI during the article.

Match preparation:
Selecting teams is more or less the same as last year except for the team rating. Instead of a hexagon, you now have a new rating system for six categories. This system shows grades from A (very good) to D (comparatively bad) for the attributes attack, defense, physicality, tactics, technique and speed. You still drag and drop your players in the management screen, with a little extension that shows the selected players’ faces below on the screen. In addition, you can define 4 tactical sets that you can switch between on the pitch with the D-Pad.

Complete control - the movements are smoother. They profit from the more senible 360-degree movement.
Animations:
It’s easily recognisable that the developers greatly increased the pool of animations and reduced the time it takes for players, to execute particular movements. In previous installments you often thought that your action could not be performed due to an animation that had to be completed first. In PES 2012 it feels smoother and more sensitive. Some player animations attract attention: sliding tackles are completely redone, which looks exceptionally well when intercepting high balls. Players are more active in general. For instance, a player who knows that he cannot reach the ball in time tries to block the cross or the shot by throwing himself into the path of the ball.
Hereby he turns around to not get hit in the face but just on the back. Just a small addition, which will please sticklers for details, as many of such small things are in the game. Another example: if a player tries to intercept a cross but knows that he’ll miss the ball, he’ll jump anyway but will withdraw his leg in the air.

Behaviour of players:
Controlling players is immensely improved. 360 degree movement is much more sensible and animations allow smooth player movements. We had some kind of 360 degree movement in PES 2011 but when you changed directions, it took the game some time to end the current animation. Players in PES 2012 have become much more responsive and enable you to move them accurately with the analogue stick. In our version, controlling the keeper manually was turned off. You could switch to the keeper but you couldn’t move him at all. Hopefully, this will work in the final game.
It is now simpler to use the lifted through ball controlledly. The defenders will still block him in many cases but played into free space it becomes a dangerous move.
The feeling of the game impressively benefits from the animations, which catches your eye in several occasions. Let me explain this, based on some examples:

1) High balls after crosses or changeovers are smoothly accepted by a player and controllable in an instant.

2) In last year’s PES, I often played a through ball alongside the sideline of the pitch to a player. This ball collided with the back heel of the player and then into touch many times. This year, the player knows very well how the ball is moving and controls it with a single touch of his foot. No more unforced errors in this situation.

One thing that has yet to be fixed is when players run towards the ball. The whole time with full speed but slow down a few yards before the ball. The opposing player, however, runs with full speed and steals sometimes the ball. This caused the loss of the ball all too often when trying to put the ball past a defender and to run past him. This is annoying and definitely has to be fixed.

You can score more often with shootings in PES 2012
Shooting:
Aiming the ball seems to be a bit easier than last year, especially shots on the run are more efficient. You can unleash some nice screamers once in a while. The rest was more or less the same as in PES 2011.

Keeper:
Keepers seem to be very reliable. The intercept high crosses or corner kicks if they can reach the ball. Sadly, they still take hours to get up from the ground. On the contrary, we had none but two occasions, where the keeper failed. That’s a good news.

More collisions - you have to time your tacklings good
Defending vs. Attacking:
When you’re defending, you instantly recognise that you really have to time your tackles. Your opponent reacts more sensitive when you collide with him.
Colliding will mostly result in a free kick. Choosing the correct path and good timing are key elements for successful defending. It’s in evidence that players are moving as a unit on the pitch. An important improvement is the removal of the “catch-up-bug”. In PES 2011 it was nearly impossible for an attacker to run away from a defender even if he had a small advantage. In our test, the attacker was rarely caught by an equally fast defender. Of course, he is slower with the ball, but only a bit. Hence, there are more one on one situations with the keeper if a through ball is played successfully.

Additionally, the long stumbling animation was removed. In PES 2011, the attacker stumbled and became unresponsive for seconds and another player was selected. This bug is fixed, hooray! If your player stumbles, you keep control and can instantly try to regain possession of the ball. Chances are now averaged, allowing the defender to take over control of the ball if the tackle is timed right.

Referee:
Referees are convincing, they take a firm stand on fouls. They often had to stop the match as we mostly mistimed our tackles, throwing the opponent off balance. We had to adjust ourselves at first, but we quickly learned, which actions were stopped and which were not. Players who prefer fair play will have only a few breaks. There are no more fouls given for block tackles, which is great. The referees went steady on yellow cards but they correctly red-carded for rude fouls in two times out of three. Altogether, wrong decisions were very rare and acceptable.
Nevertheless, quick free kicks cannot be used as frequently as we would have liked. We seldom got the chance for a quick free kick. Furthermore, the referee never booked a player after he let the play continue because of the advantage rule.
All in all, we appreciate the referees and their actions, as soon as we grasped their style of refereeing.

Offside:
To my mind, one of the biggest flaws in PES 2011 are the players that are always off side. Especially when starting a counter attack, they seem to fall into the defenders’ offside trap willingly, confused and disoriented. Today, we realised that the AI of the attackers had been heavily improved. Consequently, offside situations were reduced to a minimum and attacks can be executed more effective because the team mates don’t wait in an offisde position but plan their path carefully.

Free kicks:
Free kicks are implemented under the heading ‘continuous play’. You still can call for an assistive player and change the side he’s standing at. This happens without any black screen. The players are running by from the pitch or walk away when not needed anymore. Similarily, you place defenders in the wall, they are not teleported from somewhere but run from the play without break. It looks absolutely stunning. – More details to the Free kicks below at “Off-the-Ball-Control”.

Our console - we tortured it for seven hours
Graphics:
It’s difficult to rate graphics at this early stage so we won’t judge.
However, the pitch colour looks very natural and the lighting very realistic. In replays, you can even see the sweat on the players’ faces. Oh, and the nets are square. The audience didn’t evolve that much, sadly, there were no flags or bengal fireworks, although they wore the kits (only) of the home team. There is a new camera that is called ‘pitch side’ which is placed lower and closer towards the pitch than the regular wide cam. It was very difficult to estimate the path of high balls. Therefore, we used wide cam most of the time.

Pre game sequence in PES 2012 - much more alive
Atmosphere:
Jon Murphy said, that KONAMI will not overhaul EA for the next few years regarding the atmosphere. However, we think that it is way better than last year. For instance, the pre game sequence is completely reworked. You can not only see the two teams but the fourth referee that is coming from behind the teams, the coaches and the three main referees. Then the bunch leaves the catacombs. As you can see in the trailer and on the screen shot, there are animated camera teams and photographers. In addition, when playing with national teams, the national flags are held by four volunteers each. Of course, those things are no game changers but guarantee a nice atmosphere.

Everything around the pitch is in 3d (f.e. a camera crane slewing behind the goal)
Especially the match atmosphere itself is stunning. No more two-dimensional, static pictures of stewards. Everything is three dimensional and animated. Stewards are turning towards the pitch, some men in black suites are walking around the field and cameras are trying to follow the players’ movements. The highlight are the animated coaches, though. They move in their coaching area, direct the players, clap in their hands or shout instructions onto the field. Brilliant.

Player select
Switching between players is one of the best improvements so far. It worked pretty well in the matches we played, resulting in many opportunities to intercept the ball or rearrange some defenders. With the new system you have more time to control and position the player because in PES 2011, the cursor only changed as soon as the ball was next to the player.

A reason to celebrate - the new penalty-system is much easier to handle
Penalties:
KONAMI have simplified and completely reworked the penalties. The camera is back behind the players, finally. Taking a penalty is as easy as pie: you choose the direction with the left analogue stick at first. Then you press and hold the shoot button and let it go as soon as the power bar below the player is as filled as you want it to be. Player stats are more important than ever. A player with high stats will only hit the cross bar when the power bar is completely filled, whereas an average player’s shot will go wide. This system really works and is fun.

Ball physics:
Ball physics are impressive, they are the most realistic ball physics in a PES game ever. However, they are only that good with passes, crosses and high balls as well as screamers. Curled shots or shots around the 18 yards box seem to fly in slow motion (around 80 or 90% speed) through the box, as does the keeper, who seems to move through thick air. That’s unnecessary and has to be fixed for the perfect ball experience.

Settings:
- You can change pass support which is split into five sections, starting from 0 to 4. Support level 3 allows for many successful actions. Dropping the support to 0 punishes every mistimed pass but enables complete freedom.
- You still can use the D-Pad, there is an option where you can switch between the D-Pad and the analogue stick.
- Kick off has to be executed manually, again.

Dynamic in the A.I. play (video-screenshot)
Active AI
The AI is the step forward we were promised (and hoping for). The new system is called “Active AI”. Especially while playing versus the COM the new system really starts to shine. Your team is acting cleverer as well. The Japanese development team focussed on this aspect of the game for a reason and their hard work pays off. We’re going to describe a few situations that highlight the changes of the AI in the game:
- Freekicks: The AI doesn’t blast the ball desperately over the goal anymore, they cross the ball intelligently into the 18 yards box. Those crosses are much more effective and pay off. In PES 2011, those free kicks all too often went wide, missing friend and foe. Free kicks we caused by mistiming tackles always were effective and dangerous.

Good pathes of the A.I. endanger the defence (video-screenshot)
• Attacking AI: All offensive moves of the AI are much more individual and varied. Here are a few examples for their moves:
-> The AI is attacking with wingers more often. If an attacker sees a weak spot at the side line, he will cut into the 18 yards area. In last year’s installment, he would have crossed the ball all the time.
-> The AI is always looking for the best opportunity to score. In PES 2011, they fired their shots from every position, no matter how sharp the angle was. Now the ball is passed back in behind the defensive line, where another player comes running and slots home easily. However, if a striker has enough space, about 20-25 yards before the goal, he’ll unleash a screamer.
-> The AI uses more high passes into the path of the strikers and sends players more often than last year.
-> Conclusion: The attacks vary and are difficult to defend. This variety in gameplay is especially welcome for offline modes and will boost the fun immensely.

• Defending AI: The AI acts as a team and work hard together to stop danger. They hand over opposing players to better positioned team mates and adapt their behaviour to the particular players. Christiano Ronaldo is defended against much tighter than a “regular” player. They attack the striker even before he controls the ball and they’ll fall back if the ball is crossed to the opposing side. It really looks and feels more professional.

• Your team mates: A common problem in PES 2011 is the fact that players stop their run after they have passed the ball. You can force players to continue to run with the one-two pass, though. But that’s it. In this years version you have much more opportunities, as players are running on their own, without stopping or even walking back. Combine this with sprints of other strikers into gaps in the defense or with players creating space by drawing defenders away, and you have a whole bunch of opportunities to shape your game. If the paths of players are fine tuned a bit, this will be a huge step forward.

• Difficulty: We could only play on “Professional” when we had time with the game. In PES 2011, it was no real challenge to control and defeat your opponent on “Top Player”, at least for us. However, today we struggled to defeat Ghana with Germany. Maybe we have to get used to the new individuality and the freedom of the game but the second highest level of difficulty will challenge even experienced players when they play against a team of a similar strength.

The new feature: Off-the-Ball-Control (video-screenshot)
Off the ball control:
The big innovation that we announced is the “Off-the-ball control”. The right analogue stick is dedicated to this feature, and you can do beautiful things with it. The following examples will give a summary of this new system:

• Switching players with the right stick: Alongside the L1 trigger, you can now switch players with the right stick. This is more precise and avoids mistakes when selecting players. But using L1 for the last couple of years, this variant needs getting used to. Hence, we used L1 most of the time. If you play with completely manual player switching, you can, when you’re attacking, switch to another striker and dart into a gap in the defense, waving your hand to call for the ball (as you can do in BaL). That’s nothing new, basically, as you could already do this in PES 2011. However, using the right analogue stick lets you instantly switch to the player you want to select, without mashing L1 ten times.

• Off-the-ball in dead ball situations: In dead ball situations, this feature really starts to shine. You can shape these situations more distinct than ever. At first, your player is positioned behind the ball as you know it from last year’s game. As soon as you flick the right analogue stick, the camera angle changes and you can now select a specific player (most probably the one you want to use ) and move him around with the left stick. So you can set up opportunities to send your player, to feint or to dart into free space, even before the ball is played. It works like a charm and makes your play incalculable.

Deal ball situations are as individual as never before (video-screenshot)
Here are some examples:
–> At a corner kick I select the player at the near post and move him towards the player at the corner. The defender follows suit because he expects a pass instead of a cross. Now I switch players again and select the one at the penatly spot and run towards the near post. While the player is running, I press the circle button to cross the ball. The player’s path towards the post – and the now vacant space – matches the cross and the striker hits the crossbar with a massive header. Unlucky, maybe I’ll score next time.

–> Long free kick from about 38 yards. Again, I’m spoilt for choice. I could run with a player towards a post and volley the ball at the penalty spot. I could feint a run into the middle and then turn towards the flank, bringing the high free kick under control and cross it into the box, as well.

–> Throw-in: You now have more options for throw-ins as well because you can select the player you want. You can break away from the opponent, resulting in throw-ins that are harder to defend. Furthermore, you can throw the ball into the path of your team mate.

–> Goal kick: Even here the right stick enables you to select the player where you want to play the ball to. Gone are the times, when your opponent intercepted your kick off all the time.

–> Conclusion: The success of those situations depends on timing and the paths you run with the players. If you mistime the pass/cross or you play the ball predictably, the defenders will catch the ball. Furthermore, the abilities of the players that take the free kick/corner kick are very important to play the ball as exactly as you want to. It’s an immense enrichment for all dead ball situations and lets you create dangerous situations and suprise your opponent, without being overwhelmingly effective. The only let-down is the fact that we could not play a long (low) pass in the path of a player past the wall (triangle button).

Other:
• Personal data enables players to save player profiles. You can store information about the cursor settings, pad configuration, an avatar and trick stick settings in your profile which you can use for both online and offline matches.
• There is no information about Football Life but it will be related to Master League and Become a Legend. KONAMI will release some information in the coming weeks, for sure.
• Players are still transported on the pitch after a short dissolve at a free kick or a throw-in as you know it from previous PES games. We would love continuous play to be implemented completely so that no more dissolves and teleports are required.

PES 2012 makes a lasting and very promising impression on us
Final thoughts:
The feeling on the pitch is incredible, it’s smooth and instant. Finally, you feel back on the pitch, your commands are executed immediately and mostly everything feels consistent. If nothing goes horribly wrong, no more new bugs are introduced and nothing is overpowered, this will be the best installment on next-gen consoles. If KONAMI fix the bugs we mentioned above, PES 2012 will be a worthy successor of the legendary PES 6. It breaks my heart to let the PES 2012 disc slip away. When you’ve seen the potential of the future PES, you just can’t be content with a game that looks flawed compared to this alpha version. You should definitely look forward to this year’s fall. – More about PES 2012 coming soon.

Help.

PES 2012: The Ultimate in Player Control
KONAMI’s innovative Teammate Control allows users to move two players at once

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has unveiled additions to PES 2012 that will give users more control over the on-field action than in any football game to date. The new Teammate Control system – which gives users complete control over secondary players while the runner has the ball – represent an astonishing advance for the series.

KONAMI has previously outlined Off The Ball control, an all-new player select system wherein any player can be targeted and controlled as a set piece is taken or while defending. But Teammate Control will give PES 2012 players total freedom in all areas. The Teammate Control system works in two ways, with users pressing the right analogue stick in the direction of the player they wish to control. The Assisted mode allows the user to activate a second player by depressing the R3 button, and allows users to get to grips with the greater level of control via effective running movements. Greater control is offered by the Manual mode, wherein the user has complete freedom of movement of the second player, and can make shuttle runs, find space, and shake off markers before calling for the pass from the player still with the ball. The player will then revert to computer control when the R3 button is released, and can also be used to override any AI runs the player wants to cancel. Both can be affected at any time, so players can make moves without waiting for a pass to be completed.

PES 2012 has already added a wealth of new AI elements to ensure that its on-field action truly reflects that of football at the highest level. The Active AI system ensures that players track attackers more effectively, but without compromising the shape of the team, while one-on-one situations offer greater control as defenders press and jostle to win the ball, as attackers can use upper body feints and movements to bypass and wrong-foot their man.

Series Producer Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka and his Tokyo-based team have also confirmed a secondary batch of welcome additions, many of which have been added following consultation with PES and football fans from all over the world. Penalties in PES 2012, for instance, have been completely reworked and now use a camera from behind the taker, with players determining the position, power and placement of each kick. Shooting has also been enhanced, with the various attributes of each player taken into account with the timing, pace of the ball and position of the striker’s body to the ball coming into effect to produce less wild, ballooned efforts. Shot feints also return, with player moving so the goalie commits to the save, whilst the player can reposition for a clearer effort.

Alongside these additions to shooting movement and reaction everywhere else has also been greatly enhanced. Valuable time has been shaved from player reactions, and overall improvements to the animation via flow-block motions and changes to the player hit point elements have led to a three-frame improvement in response times, meaning players are quicker to chase down balls, amend and tailor their run, or take on a defender. The speed with which players turn has also been streamlined, making quick movements more fluid and natural. Vitally, control is no longer totally lost when losing possession of the ball, with players recovering quickly when stumbling to reclaim the ball, or close the ground when tracking back.

All skills can also now be refined in the return of the much loved ‘Challenge Training’ mode. A hugely popular part of PES lore, Challenge Training gives the player a series of tough tests which they can use to hone various skills. The mode allows users to work hard on their attacking and defending skills to improve their main game. Similarly, there are dribbling tests and set-piece challenges that necessitate hitting a series of targets, and punishing shooting tasks are used to push the player as they put in the hours that will make all the difference on field.

The aesthetic style of PES 2012 has also been refined further, with the overall movement of the players now more fluid than ever, with animations segueing into each other effortlessly and incredible attention to detail. Such is the level of graphical finesses that you can see players sweating, their neck muscles tensing as they call for the ball and bark orders to each other, and the muscles in their mouths and around their eyes contract to show the emotions the players are experiencing. This is further enhanced via dynamic lighting in the game which creates shadow and reflects from their eyes in true real-time. In keeping with the game’s exclusive use of the UEFA Champions LeagueTM and UEFA Europa LeagueTM licenses, referees governing such matches will also wear the official UEFA Champions LeagueTM uniforms.

Attention to detail also extends to the circumstances surrounding each match. Players limber up before a match, groundsmen prepare the surface as the players wait in the tunnel, while managers can be seen patrolling the touchline as camera cranes pan to cover the action. The players also pick up the ball in readiness of a throw-in, and general physicality is enhanced, with players reacting to how they are challenged, stumbling or falling depending on the severity of the tackle.

“The addition of Teammate Control is something we have been working on for a while now, and we are delighted that it will make its debut in PES 2012,” commented Jon Murphy, European PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “We have been building to create a control system that truly lets the player do whatever they like on field, and the ability to manually control a second player while simultaneously running with the ball opens all kinds of attacking options. Coupled with the Active AI advancements that ensure supporting players make shuttle run and find space, and I think we have made a huge step towards producing the most advanced football title to date.”

“This is the start of a major new era for PES,” added Murphy. “In the coming weeks we will detail more on how the ever-popular Master League has evolved, and will be unveiling the new face of the series. With PES moving ever upwards, it is time for an equally high profile and skilled cover star. The new player has all the attributes of the new game, in that he is a strong all-rounder, skillful, fast, and capable of making magic happen on-field. We have had a wonderful three years working so closely with Lionel Messi and thank him for his efforts and support. He has been key in the evolution of the series, and we wish him all the best.”

At PES2012′s Gamescom conference this morning it was announced that PES2012′s demo will arrive next week (W/C 21st August 2011, so this would mean 23rd,24th or 25th) and it has now since been stated via Voltage PR’s own Steve Merret that this would be the ”first of two demos”!

That’s right folks, two demos for PES2012 before release. Full details on the first demo will follow on Monday 22nd August.

PES2012 @ Gamescom : Cristian Ronaldo New Cover Star
We had a feeling about this one, didn’t we?

Konami confirmed today at PES2012′s Gamescom showing that it would indeed be none other than Cristiano Ronaldo who be the new face of PES. Does this temper the loss of Messi? Well, if you can’t have the worlds best why not get the universally recognised second best player in the world.

It is sure to divide opinion but you can’t argue with the marketing logic behind the decision.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH will use gamescom to announce that the world’s most expensive player, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, is to be the face of PES 2012. The Galactico midfielder will appear on all packaging and marketing materials, with KONAMI also confirming release dates for the forthcoming PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), PlayStation®2 and Wii™ versions of the game.

PES 2012 is released for PlayStation®3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC on October 14th, and KONAMI today announced that the PSP® and PlayStation®2 versions will follow on October 28th with the Wii™ game to follow on November 4th. The publisher has also confirmed that versions for Nintendo 3DS and iOS formats are also in development, with firm dates to follow.

The announcement that Cristiano Ronaldo will be the face of PES 2012 comes as anticipation for the football title hits new heights. Press acclaim for the game has been universally positive, with the key additions of Teammate Control – wherein players can prompt runs or control two players at once – and the Active AI system that ensures teammates work to create space and make key attacking and defensive runs winning wide-ranging plaudits from the media.

“Cristiano Ronaldo embodies everything we are trying to achieve with PES 2012,” commented Jon Murphy, European PES Team Leader. “He is quick, skilful, with an eye for a pass, and devastating in attack. His movement and energy brighten any game, and we are delighted that he has agreed to work with us in the pivotal title in the PES series.”

“I have long admired the PES series, but what KONAMI has achieved this year is remarkable,” Ronaldo enthused. “Football is all about teams working together and making assists and runs that create attacking opportunities. KONAMI has recreated this perfectly, and PES 2012 is a brilliant simulation of a real match. If you know football, you are going to want to spend some time with this amazing game.”

PES 2012 will feature prominently for KONAMI at gamescom, and the publishers has produced a bespoke demo version for players to experience. The demo will allow users to try out a wide range of the game’s licensed clubs, with a strong mix of club and national teams faithfully recreated. KONAMI is keen to show the individuality each team offers in PES 2012, hence the full list of clubs playable at gamescom is as follows:

National: England, Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Germany

Clubs: Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Napoli, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Villareal, Lille, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Stade Rennais FC, Ajax, FC Twente, PSV, AZ, FC Porto, Benfica, Sporting, Bayern Munich, Leverkusen, Santos, Peñarol, Club Atlético Vélez, Club Cerro Porteño.

Gamescom will also introduce visitors to key new modes within PES 2012. Football Life showcases the different career paths in the sport, and allows users to experience a career as a player, manager or owner. It is an umbrella title spanning the popular Master League and Become a Legend modes, both of which have been enhanced for the new game, but also the all-new unlockable Club Boss mode, where you steer a club fiscally.

The Training Challenges will also be on show, allowing users to refine their set-piece skills and to get to grips with the possibilities afforded by the new Teammate Control system. KONAMI will also use the show to outline key advances in PES 2012’s online elements, with the welcome return of Master League Online, plus a series of exciting community elements designed to play up the competitive natures of the series. The new personal data system which allows players to save preferred option lists, control elements and an avatar will also be shown.

“PES 2012 is the most completed football game to date and gamescom will give us a chance to show the many advances to everyone attending the show,” commented Murphy. “We look forward to seeing people get to grips with all it offers and will be watching closely to see how the many new elements are received.”

PES2012 to enter a new dimension?

Videogamer.com are reporting that in an interview they had with series producer Shingo ”Seabass” Takatsuka, that 3D support – which will come with the myPES patch – will feature in the PS3 version of the game.

We await final confirmation on this development but this is a pretty hefty bonus for those who have adopted 3D hardware.

Dus nu hebben we 3 "Football Life" modes
Become a Player (Become a Legend)
Become a Coach (Master League)
Become a Club Boss (PES Management)

#ANONIEMmaandag 22 augustus 2011 @ 23:04
Yes!!

I know.

Dribbelen daarentegen is best lastig.
