VULKAANUITBARSTING

BRUSSEL (ANP) - De European Cockpit Association (ECA) heeft maandag
de autoriteiten opgeroepen om veiligheid voorrang te geven op
commerciële overwegingen. Volgens de organisatie is er meer
informatie nodig over de vraag waar de vulkaanas een bedreiging
vormt voor de veiligheid. Eén vliegtuig, op één route, alleen
overdag bewijst weinig over die veiligheid, aldus de
pilotenorganisatie.

De ECA, die bijna 39.000 piloten uit 38 Europese landen
vertegenwoordigt, vindt dat operationele beslissingen ten aanzien
van de veiligheid en financiële problemen apart benaderd moeten
worden. ,,Die twee moeten nooit op een hoop gegooid worden''. De
organisatie wijst er verder op dat het altijd de piloot is die de
uiteindelijke beslissing neemt of er wel of niet wordt gevlogen.

De ECA deed haar oproep vooruitlopend op overleg van de Europese
verkeersministers over de situatie in het luchtruim.

If after careful consideration, safety authorities have concluded certain airspace poses no further threat, the final decision passes through the airline to the pilot of the particular flight – who must be given as much clear information as is available to make the final decision to fly. Pilots have always been, and always will be, best placed to protect the safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft.

ECA also calls on the European Authorities to recognise the extraordinary circumstances the industry in Europe is experiencing. European level solutions are needed to address the huge financial burdens which this natural event has placed on our industry, thereby also avoiding unbalanced subsidy and commercial advantage. Temporary absence of air transport has demonstrated that aviation is crucial to our society's smooth functioning, and therefore the EU must allow for swift financial relief to be provided.

Operational decisions require a "safety first" approach and separately, financial crises require a financial solution. ECA supports the European Authorities in separately addressing both the risks to lives and to the financial survival of our sector.

Andover - Nabij Andover in Groot-Brittannië is een vliegtuigje neergestort. De politie houdt rekening met een crash als gevolg van de aswolk uit IJsland.


Boven Groot-Brittannië geldt een vliegverbod. Dat weerhield twee mannen in een klein toestel er niet van om te vliegen. Het toestel stortte neer en vloog in brand. De mannen zijn allebei overleden.

Het is nog niet zeker of de stofwolk daadwerkelijk een rol heeft gespeeld in het ongeluk. De politie is nog bezig met onderzoek.
