The Campos Meta team has confirmed that Jose Ramon Carabante has taken full control of the Spanish outfit, with former Midland, Spyker and Force India boss Colin Kolles being appointed as team principal instead of team founder Adrian Campos.

After weeks of speculation about the future of the team, it was announced on Friday that a deal had been reached with Campos to make Carabante, who was already a shareholder in the team, the new majority owner.

Carabante said he has secured a deal that will see the team competing in the 2010 championship.

"I would like to thank Bernie Ecclestone, who worked tremendously to support our efforts to keep the team viable," said Carabante.

"The whole rescue operation has been a race against time with the goal of always having the team run two competitive cars at the first Grand Prix of the F1 season in Bahrain.

"We have a lot of hard work still ahead of us but we are excited about making our F1 debut and looking forward to a competitive season."

Carabante said the team's base will remain in Spain and that Kolles will also act as managing director to ensure the team is fully operational and ready to make its Bahrain debut next month.

Kolles added, however, that the team needed to find 'extra funding' to guarantee its presence in Bahrain.

"I could not resist this tremendous challenge and am very excited to join forces in this new team," said Kolles.

"Over the next ten days we will review the entire operation, find the extra funding to ensure the team will make the first race in Bahrain, announce the line-up for 2010 in due time and make the operation viable under Jose Ramon Carabante's new ownership."

The team has a contract with Brazilian Bruno Senna, with rumours having linked Jose Maria Lopez with the second seat, despite the Argentinean having a contract with the US F1 squad.

Max Verstappen maakt deze week zijn Internationale debuut tijdens de Wintercup in Lonato. De zoon van Nederlands succesvolste F1 coureur kende een drukke week. Vooral de laatste paar dagen stonden in het teken van trainen en testen, maar dat deden niet alleen de Verstappens. De deelname in de KF3 is heel zwaar met meer dan honderd concurrenten.

Tijdens de testdagen op het circuit van South Garda Karting moesten er nog verschillende zaken gestroomlijnd worden, maar langzaam maar zeker kwam men bij het fabrieksteam van CRG bij de goede afstelling. Ook Max moest nog wat wennen bij zijn eerste krachtmeting met alle toppers ter wereld. De vele deelnemers, de nieuwe banden, welke afstelling en ga zo maar door.

Vanmiddag stond de kwalificatie op het menu en de eerste serie. Verstappen Junior pakte de draad goed op met een vierde positie in de kwalificatie. In de eerste serie had Max de smaak te pakken en won. Een beter debuut kon hij zich niet wensen. “Het was verschrikkelijk nat, maar Max heeft zichzelf en zijn rijstijl goed aangepast aan de situatie. Hij won met een straatlengte voorsprong”, zei Jos Verstappen tegenover RaceXpress.com. “Maar we moeten niet gelijk te hoge verwachtingen hebben van Max. Het is tenslotte pas zijn eerste internationale race. Dat moeten we niet vergeten. We moeten hem de kans geven om te rijpen en we doen ons best, maar de concurrentie staat ook niet stil.”

In ieder geval is de kop eraf en met de eerste zege in de pocket kan men zich in het kamp van CRG gaan voorbereiden op morgen, wanneer er nog meer series op het programma staan. RaceXpress.com houdt u op de hoogte.

USF1 co-founder Ken Anderson has admitted that he is in discussion with the FIA to reach an agreement that will allow for the new team to miss the first four races of the 2010 Formula 1 season.

While rival Campos now looks likely to make the start of the season after Jose Ramon Carabante took control of the project and installed Colin Kolles as team boss, speculation that USF1 has fallen behind in preparations and is struggling to secure the necessary funding has intensified in recent weeks.

In an interview with the New York Times yesterday, Anderson revealed that USF1 was unlikely to make it to Bahrain on March 14, and was seeking to miss the Australian, Malaysian and Chinese Grands Prix as well.

"We're working with the FIA to clarify how many races we can miss," Anderson told the newspaper. "In an ideal world, we can miss the first four races and show up in Barcelona."

Despite recent revelations that the Concorde Agreement includes a clause allowing teams to miss up to three races before officially being deemed to have failed to participate, the FIA made it clear earlier this month that new teams would breach the regulations if they missed any event.

Anderson indicated however that he believed the governing body sympathetic to USF1's predicament and wanted to assist him in ensuring it made the grid.

"I guess anything's possible," he said when asked about incurring fines for missing races. "But what would be the point of that? Why would they give us a franchise and just, the first time there's a bump in the road, yank it and put it out of business?

"That's definitely not the message that I'm getting from them. They want to help us, not shut us down."

Anderson insisted that both co-founder Peter Windsor and investor Chad Hurley, who co-founded YouTube, are still involved with the project. Windsor told AUTOSPORT's Grapevine column earlier this week: "I am still with the team", while the latter responded with: "Peter is still here at the moment, not sure what he is up to, stay tuned."

But the American revealed to the NYT that the project's progress was dependant on sponsorship falling in to place soon: "We have a timeline in place that if we get a decision quickly, that triggers funding and we're good to go.

"If it takes another week or two to make a decision, it keeps backing up," he added.

Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Jerez testing February 2010Jenson Button believes the Ferrari is the strongest-looking car after the first full dry day of testing at Jerez this week.

Mark Webber set the best time of the day for Red Bull, with Fernando Alonso second quickest for Ferrari and Button's McLaren third. Alonso and Button both completed several long runs today and Button was impressed by the consistent pace of the Ferrari.

"I think the Ferrari is a very strong car," he said. "If you look at their runs today, they're very consistent. I think they have better consistency than anyone at the moment.

"It's always interesting to observe what they're up to. I think our pace is good, but there are still areas we need to work on for me to be happy with the car."

Button spent some time behind both Alonso and the Mercedes of Michael Schumacher on track today and reckons the Ferrari is handling best so far.

"I followed a few drivers today, Fernando, Michael. It's always interesting to see what's happening," said Button. "You never know what fuel loads people are on but you can see what sort of balance they have.

"The Mercedes to me seemed like it was a little bit twitchy at the rear, and braking it looked like it was locking the rears, but if they're on 150kg it's understandable. It's interesting. The Ferrari looked good on the circuit, good consistency."

And on the performance of the MP4-25, he says McLaren is heading in the right direction but the car is not yet where he wants it.

"For me, our car over one lap is getting there," Button added. "We're improving step by step. And on the long runs, we're improving every run we do. There's so much information we've got from today - more than any other test day, for me anyway. We'll go through all of that this evening and hopefully have another good day of testing tomorrow."

Fernando Alonso has declared the Ferrari F10 the best car he has ever driven - and says the team is yet to show what it can really do.

Ferrari was quickest throughout the first test of the winter at Valencia a fortnight ago, but has kept a lower profile during the past fortnight at Jerez.

However Alonso has set some eye-catching times on long runs, and he ended this week's test full of confidence.

"There are no reasons to be pessimistic," the double champion told Spanish media. "As of today, this is the best car I've ever had."

Having taken over from team-mate Felipe Massa on Friday, Alonso enjoyed the best of the weather at Jerez this week, and was able to accumulate plenty of mileage - logging 269 laps over the past two days.

"The two days that I tested it was sunny and the track was dry and I could work more than I thought so I'm very happy," he said. "We have done a good job in terms of reliability and long runs."

Alonso said he was not underestimating Ferrari's rivals - but warned them that the Italian squad had not displayed its real potential yet.

"Red Bull, McLaren and Renault have been very quick and they have shown their cards, while we are still hiding ours," he said. "We are going to analyse the data, but we are very optimistic. As of today, if I were in a different team I would be looking at Ferrari because everything is going very well.

"Maybe where Ferrari needs to improve is in the short runs with little fuel onboard. That's where the Red Bull and the McLaren have been quicker, and they will be the reference to try and improve the F10 in the next test in Barcelona."

The Spaniard's declaration comes after McLaren's Jenson Button said that he also reckoned Ferrari could be the team to beat.

"I think the Ferrari is a very strong car," Button said yesterday. "If you look at their runs today, they're very consistent. I think they have better consistency than anyone at the moment."

Decoding Jerez – Button tops times, but it’s all to play for

After a rainy first couple of days, the second Jerez test actually turned out to be quite revealing and a picture has emerged of how the teams line up with the new season now less than a month away.

So far most of the testing has been reliability based, with some performance work this week by the more advanced teams. Next week’s final test in Barcelona will be more about performance and many teams will bring major updates to their cars in preparation for the first race. From what we saw this week, the field is close enough for this to change the order, if someone finds a significant aerodynamic step. It is all to play for.

Jenson Button set the fastest time of the test on Saturday morning, a 1m18.871 on the first lap of a two lap run. The second lap was almost a second slower, most of the time being lost in the final sector of the second lap, presumably as the tyres started to go off. Fernando Alonso did not go for a short run in the Ferrari and set a time half a second slower on the second lap of a 13 lap run. Once again the Ferrari’s characteristic of causing a long period of drop off on the tyres was evident.

However Alonso did a run starting in the 1m 21s on which he must have had 80 kilos to cover the laps he did. Fuel corrected this means he was lapping at around 1m18.9, so very close to Button’s time.

At the end of the day Alonso did a 48 lap partial race simulation, with a pit stop on lap 13. The 35 lap run which then followed was very fast and consistent, laps in the 1m 22s moving into the 1m21s as the fuel burned off.

Engineers tell me that the established teams are covered by no more than 7/10ths of a second. Ferrari and McLaren are close but Ferrari has so far been more reliable. Red Bull follow. They don’t seem to have the advantage I expected them to have, given where they finished last season and it will be interesting to see what new parts they bring next week and where they end up. Mercedes are in pursuit as well, as are Force India.

Renault looked more competitive on Saturday, with a 24 lap run in the low 1m 21s and high 1m 20s and a fastest time set on the second lap of a seven lap run.

Williams are more difficult to judge as they have done predominantly long runs with heavy fuel and have been putting the new Cosworth engine through exhaustive reliability runs, which make it hard to judge their true pace. But presuming that they have been quite conservative so far, they look like they could be in reasonable shape come the first race weekend.

Alonso gave some very bullish quotes about the Ferrari car to the media yesterday, which have raised the stakes quite a bit.

“This is the best car I’ve ever had,” he said. “Red Bull, McLaren and Renault have been very quick and have shown their cards, while we are still hiding ours. We will analyse the data, but we are very optimistic. If I were in a different team I would be looking at Ferrari because everything is going really well.

“Maybe where Ferrari has to improve is the short runs with little fuel onboard.”

He’s being a little disingenuous here as the Ferrari looks pretty impressive on the first lap, it’s just that they haven’t been doing short low-fuel runs.

As it looks increasingly likely that teams are looking to run predominantly one stop strategies with one very long stint, Bridgestone are likely to err on the side of caution – they have always been a very conservative company and this is their final year in the sport – and bring tyres to races which are not marginal to allow for this kind of strategy.

Being able to qualify on the harder of the two tyres will be an advantage and it looks like the Ferrari in particular and the McLaren can switch the tyres on over a single lap.

Alonso is being quoted at 4-1 for the championship and that looks like a very good bet to me at this stage of the game.
