The Jets have reportedly begun monitoring Jay Cutler's situation in Denver.
New York has claimed confidence in Brett Ratliff and Kellen Clemens since Rex Ryan's hiring, but would "never say never" to a player of Cutler's caliber. The Jets probably would need a three-team trade with a club like the Lions or Eagles to get Cutler. Gang Green doesn't have enough ammo as it stands.
quote:The trade that sent Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs appears to be only the first phase of some major wheeling and dealing by the New England Patriots this offseason.
The second phase, NFL sources say, is likely to involve a trade that would send Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers to the Patriots in exchange for the second-round pick (34th overall) they received from the Chiefs on Feb. 28.
ģ Free-agency tracker
According to league sources, the Patriots and Panthers are hoping to complete the deal at some point between the March 22-25 NFL owners meetings and the start of the draft on April 25.
Peppers, on whom the Panthers have placed a franchise tag that assures him of a one-year contract worth $16.68 million, would be converted to outside linebacker in New England's 3-4 defense.
The Patriots were already looking ahead to the possibility of acquiring Peppers when they shipped Cassel and Vrabel to Kansas City, NFL sources say, because they wanted to clear the salary-cap space necessary to sign Peppers to a new contract that would put him among the higher-paid defensive players in the league. After signing Cassel to a one-year, franchise-tag tender contract worth $14.65 million, the Pats had nearly $30 million in cap money devoted to two quarterbacks (including $14.62 million for Tom Brady).
Once they were convinced Brady would be fully recovered from the season-ending knee injury he suffered last year, they were comfortable with trading his replacement to the Chiefs and putting the wheels in motion to bolster a defense that has gotten particularly old at linebacker. Vrabel and fellow linebacker Tedy Bruschi are well into the twilight of their respective careers.
NFL sources say the Panthers would welcome the chance to unload Peppers for a second-rounder, even though it would be well below his market value because it would be less costly to sign a second-round pick than a first-rounder. The Panthers already have made some belt-tightening financial moves within their front office.
This, in part, could help answer the lingering question of why the Patriots were willing to take only a second-round pick for Cassel and Vrabel rather than possibly get a higher choice as part of three-way a deal involving the Denver Broncos, who were ready to give up Jay Cutler for Cassel. Without an additional second-round pick, the Patriots might not be able to pursue Peppers.
League sources also point out that the Panthers don't have a first-round choice after trading it to the Philadelphia Eagles and aren't scheduled to draft until 59th overall (near the bottom of the second round). The 34th spot would give them the second pick of the second round and a chance to land a player with a first-round rating who was pushed down to that spot for whatever reason.
Also, according to NFL sources, there is a third phase to the Patriots' offseason strategy. They would like to further beef up their linebacking corps by adding an inside linebacker in the draft. They are known to believe that USC's Rey Maualuga would be a great fit for their scheme, especially when paired with Jerod Mayo, their 2008 first-round pick who was the NFL's top defensive rookie. However, some early projections suggest it might be long shot for Maualuga to be available for the Patriots with the 23rd overall pick.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick is known for making excellent decisions when it comes to acquiring players, but at least one NFL player-personnel evaluator questions whether Peppers would be a good fit in New England.
"This is a guy who totally went on strike two years ago because he wasn't happy with his contract," said the player personnel source, who requested anonymity. "He's also very long (in the torso), which is not ideal for a 3-4 outside linebacker. And he can't drop into coverage. He's very stiff.
"But one of the things (the Patriots) are looking at is the fact that, in passing situations, they can have Peppers up front with (Richard) Seymour and (Jarvis) Green. That makes it easier for them to take (nose tackle Vince) Wilfork out of the game in (passing situations) and just play him on running downs."
quote:The Jaguars have released wide receiver Matt Jones.
On a day when players returned to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium to undergo physical assessments that kick off new strength coach Luke Richesson’s conditioning program, Jones was cut by the team following a week in an Arkansas jail for violation of his probation. Thus ends an attempt to convert Jones from a college quarterback to a pro pass-catcher. He was the 21st overall pick of the 2005 draft.

NFL owners voted Monday to modify the schedule to ease the burden of cross-country road trips.
Last year, the Patriots and the Jets had to make West Coast trips to play AFC West opponents and NFC West teams. The Patriots chose to remain on the West Coast twice last season -- for back-to-back games against San Francisco and San Diego in October and Seattle and Oakland in December -- to minimize the wear-and-tear the schedule presented.
The Jets, meanwhile, played at San Diego and then had to travel to Oakland three weeks later. In December, New York visited San Francisco, returned home to play Buffalo, then went back to the coast to play Seattle. The Jets were upset by the Raiders as part of a late-season swoon that prevented them from making the playoffs.
Under the new plan, teams wouldn't have to visit two West Coast teams, just one, along with a team closer to the Midwest. Specifically, Oakland will be paired with Denver, and San Diego will be paired with Denver. In the NFC, Arizona and San Francisco will be paired as will St. Louis and Seattle.
Since 2002 when the league expanded to eight four-team divisions, the NFL has used a rotating formula in which a team plays four opponents within its conference once every three years and four teams in the other conference every four years.
Teams that have road games against Denver and Oakland will get home games against Kansas City and San Diego. The opposite scenario will also be true. The same format of home-and-away games with the paired cities holds true for the NFC as well.
The proposal was submitted by the broadcast committee for the purpose of creating a better balance for travel to the West Coast. Currently, the AFC South and the NFC West are scheduled to play the AFC West in 2010, which is when the new plan would be starting.
Senior NFL writer John Clayton contributed to this report.

Cutler traded to the Lions
quote:CUTLER: “I WAS SURPRISED THEY DECIDED TO TRADE ME THIS SOON”
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 1, 2009, 11:27 p.m.
Breaking his public silence and speaking out for the first time since he was officially placed on the trading block, soon-to-be ex-Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler told Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com that he was “shocked” that the Broncos decided to give up on a potential reconciliation.
Ultimately, Cutler said he didn’t want to be traded in an article co-written by Alex Marvez.
“I was surprised they decided to trade me this soon,” Cutler said. “I didn’t want to get traded. This wasn’t me. They [The Broncos] had been going back and forth saying things, wanting me to be their quarterback and then they didn’t. I really didn’t want this. I love Denver. I really like my teammates. I didn’t want it to get this far.”
Cutler denied the Broncos’ claims that he didn’t respond to their repeated efforts to get in touch with him over the past 10 days, saying that he hasn’t heard from the team during that span.
According to Cutler, the first time he heard from the Broncos over that period of time was when they told him Tuesday that they had given up on any attempts for a compromise and would now actively attempt to trade him.
As for where Cutler will wind up, the quarterback said he thought that he will land in the NFC. He didn’t express a preference for his next NFL employer.
Citing a source, Glazer and Marvez reported that the Broncos want more than a first-round and a third-round draft pick in exchange for Cutler.
Glazer interviewed Cutler at a UFC Fight Night 18 card in Nashville, Tenn.
If UFC really wants to create some buzz, perhaps they could broker a no-holds-barred cage match between Cutler and Broncos coach Josh McDaniels. Just kidding.

The Broncos confirmed the move.
To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.
To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back an undisclosed draft choice in a later round.
The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.
The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.
Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.
Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

Burress had the chance to earn $29.5 million over the remainder of his contract, but he turned it down because he no longer wanted to be a Giant, The Newark Star-Ledger reports:
According to someone familiar with the negotiations, the team offered Burress the chance to earn all of the money that was written into his contract from here on out. All he had to do was end his fight for the money he forfeited over the last four weeks of last season (base salary, roster bonus and signing bonus) during which he was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team” and start playing by their rules.
Burress said no to the deal, so the Giants said no to his further employment with the team.

3 games voor een misdemeanor... ik vind het veel..quote:Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch for the first three games of the 2009 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
The NFL announced the suspension on Thursday. Lynch is expected to appeal the suspension.
Lynch will lose approximately $112,000 of his $635,000 base salary for 2009 during the suspension.
Lynch was arrested near Los Angeles on Feb. 11 and later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge. In searching a parked car carrying Lynch, Culver City police found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun inside a backpack in the trunk.
Prosecutors said the backpack contained other items belonging to Lynch. Police said they also found four marijuana cigarettes in the car, but no drug charges were filed.
After pleading guilty to having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, Lynch was sentenced last month to 80 hours of community service and three years' probation. The Bills' 2007 first-round draft pick also issued an apology.
"I am embarrassed by my recent arrest and conviction," Lynch said. "I deeply regret that I placed myself in this situation.

Thomas rounds out a linebacker corps that includes four-year veteran Derrick Johnson and Mike Vrabel.

Leftwich, 29, a first-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Marshall in 2003, won a Super Bowl ring last season as a backup with the Steelers.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder has started just eight games since 2006, his last season with the Jaguars. He played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.

quote:Top prospect Curry invites 12-year-old leukemia survivor to draft festivities
When Aaron Curry realized he'd be one of nine players invited to the 2009 NFL Draft, he knew he'd put on an expensive suit and surround himself with his family on one of the biggest days of his life.
The Wake Forest linebacker wanted to do something unique, too.
Curry wound up at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., on Monday. In a prearranged meeting set up by his agent and hospital officials, Curry told wide-eyed, 12-year-old Bryson Merriweather that he wanted a tour of the place. The boy had spent the better part of two years there undergoing five rounds of chemotherapy for leukemia, which is now in remission.
"We were acting like he was just taking me on a regular tour around the hospital," Curry said. "Toward the end, we ended up outside tossing each other a football, and I just started talking about the draft.
"He said he had seen it, and I was telling him that I had been invited and if he would join me in this experience. So I said, 'So come to New York with me and get drafted into the NFL.'"
So joining Curry's mother, fiancee and siblings at his draft table on April 25 will be Bryson, the Madison, Ala., boy who is determined to play football again -- and get more people to be bone marrow donors.
"I was showing him around and then he asked me," Bryson said of Curry's surprise offer. "And I've never been to New York before."
While Curry has been fortunate not to have a friend or family member affected by cancer, he was drawn to Bryson's story when he was directed to the St. Jude hospital through his agent, Andy Ross.
Bryson, who played tight end and defensive end for his youth team, first complained that his chest hurt after football practice in October 2007. Later, he said he couldn't catch his breath, and it was thought he had asthma.
But one month after that, his family was hit with horrible news: Bryson had acute myeloid leukemia and would need to immediately go by ambulance four hours away to St. Jude, a top pediatric cancer treatment hospital.
Bryson began a grueling schedule of chemotherapy while his family searched in vain for a matching donor if he required a bone marrow transplant.
"It was disheartening to know that we didn't have a match," said his father, Lorace "Ace" Merriweather.
As Bryson got stronger, he helped lead bone marrow drives and fundraisers for St. Jude hospital in his hometown. His parents also decided to have another child.
Six months after Bryson went into remission, his mother, Becky, gave birth to Bryan in December. It was recently determined he's a genetic match with his older brother.
"If the cancer does come back, we now have a donor match in our own family," Bryson's father said. "That's been another amazing journey that we've gone through."
Now that journey will take Bryson and his dad to New York. Curry will meet them on Thursday and tour the city. They'll attend some events together Friday, and Bryson will be there Saturday when Curry could be the No. 1 overall pick by the Detroit Lions.
"After meeting Bryson, I just think it was the perfect route to go," Curry said. "Bryson has already done some things in the community and he's only 12."
Statistics show that Bryson has a 30 to 40 percent chance of relapse, and a cell mutation he has puts him in an even higher risk group. But the lanky Bryson is strong enough now to play sports again. He's running track this spring and hopes to resume football this fall.
He'll also have stories to tell his friends after experiencing the draft first-hand with a potential future NFL star.
"It's just been a blessing to go through this whole experience. It renewed our faith," Ace Merriweather said. "It also shows Bryson's courage and will to fight through this. He didn't ask for it, but he's taken on the challenge. I know he's going to have a long life ahead of him.
"Maybe one day we'll be at the draft inviting somebody."

Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 17, 2009, 10:08 p.m.
The Philadelphia Eagles announced tonight that they have agreed to a new six-year contract with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters after acquiring him via a trade earlier today from the Buffalo Bills.
Peters passed a physical earlier today at the Eagles’ training complex, and team officials worked rapidly to strike a deal with Peters’ agent, Eugene Parker.
Peters was under contract through 2010 under his previous Buffalo deal, but the Eagles have basically removed the final two years of his old deal. Contract terms weren’t immediately available on a agreement that has Peters under contract to Philadelphia through 2014.
The official terms of the trade sent a 2009 first-round draft pick (28th overall), a 2009 fourth-round draft pick and an undisclosed late-round 2010 pick from the Eagles to the Bills in exchange for Peters.
“Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film.
“I have always believed that success in the National Football League is derived from the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews.”
Peters, 27, was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2008.
A press conference for Peters has been scheduled for Sunday morning at the Eagles’ headquarters.
UPDATE: ESPN is reporting that Peters’ extension is worth $53 million in new money with a total of $60 million over the next six seasons.
The Eagles announced that it was a new, six-year deal, but this report is characterizing it as a four-year extension of his old Bills deal.

Bigby, who was a restricted free agent, appeared in just seven games for Green Bay in 2008 and finished the season on injured reserve because of a shoulder ailment. He started all 16 games for the Packers in 2007 and had career highs in interceptions (five) and tackles (86).
Bigby went undrafted out of Central Florida in 2005, but he signed with the Dolphins as a free agent. He eventually landed with the Packers later in his rookie season and worked his way up from practice-squad player to eventual starter.

NFL.com reached Ross by phone, and the agent said he had “no comment” on how the talk went. Sullivan didn’t return a phone message left by NFL.com.

Ben geen fan van de Eagles, maar in dit geval moet ik ze een dikkequote:Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown has asked to be traded.
Brown has four years remaining on his contract, and the Eagles have indicated that they will not renegotiate his deal.
After dealing with a similar situation with Lito Sheppard, it is considered unlikely that the Eagles will deal Brown at this time.
"I feel like it has been a total lack of respect," Brown told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio on Monday.
Brown told Paolantonio he has been trying to get a new deal for more than a year, but the Eagles have said no.
Brown said his agent has now asked the Eagles for permission to seek a trade.
The Eagles released a statement expressing disappointment in Brown's decision to go public, explaining that Brown accepted an extension of his rookie contract early that provided his family financial security for the rest of his life. That extension removed any concerns about health or performance that all other players in his draft class had to worry about.
Brown has four years remaining on the contract, and the Eagles feel he is being paid fairly.
"Focusing only on a player's salary for a given year is not a valid analysis," the Eagles said in a statement.
"There have been league MVP's, Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, and perennial Pro Bowlers who have been in a similar situation. All of their teams have required them to wait until their contract expired or there was only one year remaining before any adjustment took place. It is only in the most extraordinary, in fact, less than a handful of circumstances in the last ten years that any players two new years into a contract with three years left have been adjusted. We don't think this qualifies as an extraordinary circumstance.
"Sheldon's comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not."

The news could be potentially damaging to the wide receivers' stock during this weekend's NFL draft.
Harvin was considered a first-round pick after leaving the University of Florida following his junior season. Tate was considered a possible second- to fourth-round pick after a solid college career at North Carolina.
Joel Segal, the agent who represents both players, didn't return messages from FOXSports.com seeking comment.
NFL teams received the drug-test results earlier this week, according to FOXSports.com.
Sources told FOXSports.com Harvin and Tate were the only two high-profile players to flunk their combine drug tests, and one of the sources said that fewer than a dozen players tested positive for recreational drugs.
Players who failed the tests are subject to entry into the NFL's substance-abuse program.
Harvin finished his college career with 133 receptions for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns and 194 carries for 1,852 yards and 19 scores. He averaged 9.5 yards per carry and 11.6 yards every time he touched the ball. He also posted a strong 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine.
He was at his best in big games, earning MVP honors in the 2006 Southeastern Conference championship game and totaling 171 yards and a touchdown in a victory over Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series national title game in January.
He lined up at receiver, running back and quarterback for the Gators but expects to do even more at the next level because several teams have already talked to him about returning kickoffs and punts.
Tate finished his career with an NCAA-record 3,523 career combined kick-return yards. Before tearing two knee ligaments midway through his senior year, he averaged 23.5 yards on his 16 receptions.
Tate, still recovering from his injury, didn't work out at the combine.

quote:DELHOMME GETS EXTENSION
Posted by Mike Florio on April 23, 2009, 3:15 p.m.
For some reason, we’re suddenly reminded of the fact that people in certain cultures eat insects.
That thought sprang to mind because, apparently, certain NFL teams think it’s a good thing to generate six turnovers in a winnable home playoff game.
The Panthers have “rewarded” Jake Delhomme for his horrible playoff performance with a five-year contract extension.
The deal, according to Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com, is worth $42.5 million, with $20 million guaranteed.
“He didn’t want to go into the season with this hanging over his head,” agent Rick Smith said. “It was a cordial negotiation throughout. We worked on it the last two weeks and it was finalized today.”
(Rick, shouldn’t you be shopping for bras with Andre Smith? Boom. Roasted.)
Anyway, Delhomme is 34. He missed most of the 2007 season with an elbow injury that required Billy Jack Tommy John surgery.
So he gets a five-year extension? With $20 million guaranteed? Really?
Of course, the deal is a steal in comparison to the likelihood that the Lions will invest $40 million guaranteed in a quarterback who might become Michigan’s version of Ryan Leaf. But it still seems like a lot of money for a guy whose career passer rating is in the mid-80s, and who has never really fulfilled the potential that he flashed when he led the Panthers to prominence in 2003.
