Bowlen preached a message of team unity in the e-mail, reiterating that he and new coach Josh McDaniels had reached out many times to Cutler, who didn't respond to their overtures.

Bowlen, who remained largely silent during the six-week rift that ended with Thursday's blockbuster trade with the Chicago Bears, wrote that anybody who puts himself above the team gets a one-way ticket out of town.

"Understand this: it remains about team," Bowlen wrote. "Our franchise has gone to the Super Bowl six times, with three different coaches and with many different players. It has never been about one player, and it never will be. Coach McDaniels shares this vision, and everyone in the organization -- players, coaches and staff -- must understand and accept this unconditionally. If anyone does not, that person will not be a part of this franchise."

Plaxico Burress, who was released by the Giants on Friday, apparently walked away from a good deal offered by the team before it cut ties with the wide receiver.

Burress had the chance to earn $29.5 million over the remainder of his contract, but he turned it down because he no longer wanted to be a Giant, The Newark Star-Ledger reports:

According to someone familiar with the negotiations, the team offered Burress the chance to earn all of the money that was written into his contract from here on out. All he had to do was end his fight for the money he forfeited over the last four weeks of last season (base salary, roster bonus and signing bonus) during which he was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team” and start playing by their rules.

Burress said no to the deal, so the Giants said no to his further employment with the team.

Plaxico Burress, released Friday by the Giants amid an ongoing gun-possession case in New York, cursed out a police officer in Florida during a recent traffic stop, telling the cop he was going to be in trouble because Burress knew the sheriff "personally," the New York Post has reported.

Burress, who faces a possible 3½-year prison sentence on the gun charge, replied to each of the officer's questions and commands with an "[expletive] you" during the stop, the newspaper reported, citing police.

Ik vind Orton helemaal niet zo Hij is 21-12 als starter, en zijn stats verbeteren jaar op jaar. Vorig jaar 18TDs-12 INTs, z'n YPA omhoog, z'n completion % omhoog, etc. Het is niet alsof hij een geweldige receiversgroep had bij de Bears. Hij lijkt n stuk voorzichtiger met de bal geworden.

Cutler heeft niet echt een stijgende lijn in z'n stats... het gaat wat omhoof en wat omlaag, maar met name stabiel. 18INT's is echter wel veel... ten opzicht van vorig jaar 5 TDs meer, maar ook 4 INT's meer...

Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch for the first three games of the 2009 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
The NFL announced the suspension on Thursday. Lynch is expected to appeal the suspension.

Lynch will lose approximately $112,000 of his $635,000 base salary for 2009 during the suspension.

Lynch was arrested near Los Angeles on Feb. 11 and later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge. In searching a parked car carrying Lynch, Culver City police found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun inside a backpack in the trunk.

Prosecutors said the backpack contained other items belonging to Lynch. Police said they also found four marijuana cigarettes in the car, but no drug charges were filed.

After pleading guilty to having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, Lynch was sentenced last month to 80 hours of community service and three years' probation. The Bills' 2007 first-round draft pick also issued an apology.

"I am embarrassed by my recent arrest and conviction," Lynch said. "I deeply regret that I placed myself in this situation.

Cutler vorig jaar statistisch gezien wel leuk, maar had nogal moeite om al die yards ook daadwerkelijk in punten om te zetten. Zijn stats qua yards, ypa, etc lagen erg dicht bij die van Brady van 2007... Het aantal TD's en INT's was echter enorm verschillend.

The Kansas City Chiefs and seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas have agreed to a contract, The Kansas City Star has reported.

Thomas, 36, started 14 of 16 games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 during his 13th NFL season, recording 94 tackles, 65 of which came solo.

Thomas rounds out a linebacker corps that includes four-year veteran Derrick Johnson and Mike Vrabel.

Free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich has agreed to a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a source told ESPN's Michael Smith.

The Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers also were interested in Leftwich, who joins a depth chart in Tampa that includes Luke McCown, Josh Johnson, and Brian Griese.

Leftwich, 29, a first-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Marshall in 2003, won a Super Bowl ring last season as a backup with the Steelers.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder has started just eight games since 2006, his last season with the Jaguars. He played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.

Leftwich passed for 303 yards with two touchdowns in five appearances with the Steelers last season as Ben Roethlisberger's backup.

Paulus is a former high school Gatorade Football Player of the Year selection who was offered football scholarships to Notre Dame and the University of Miami, but chose to play basketball at Duke.

Paulus was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils at point guard who was once named second-team All-ACC. He was a third-team Academic All-American selection.

A four-time all-state football player in New York, Paulus is listed at 6′1″, 180 pounds on the Duke basketball roster.

Paulus set six New York state passing records, including career passing yards (11,763). He threw 152 touchdown passes in 45 career games, leading his high school to a 42-3 record with him under center.

Paulus was the starting quarterback in the U.S. Army All-American game, also garnering All-American football honors from Parade Magazine.

Top prospect Curry invites 12-year-old leukemia survivor to draft festivities

When Aaron Curry realized he'd be one of nine players invited to the 2009 NFL Draft, he knew he'd put on an expensive suit and surround himself with his family on one of the biggest days of his life.

The Wake Forest linebacker wanted to do something unique, too.

Curry wound up at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., on Monday. In a prearranged meeting set up by his agent and hospital officials, Curry told wide-eyed, 12-year-old Bryson Merriweather that he wanted a tour of the place. The boy had spent the better part of two years there undergoing five rounds of chemotherapy for leukemia, which is now in remission.

"We were acting like he was just taking me on a regular tour around the hospital," Curry said. "Toward the end, we ended up outside tossing each other a football, and I just started talking about the draft.

"He said he had seen it, and I was telling him that I had been invited and if he would join me in this experience. So I said, 'So come to New York with me and get drafted into the NFL.'"

So joining Curry's mother, fiancee and siblings at his draft table on April 25 will be Bryson, the Madison, Ala., boy who is determined to play football again -- and get more people to be bone marrow donors.

"I was showing him around and then he asked me," Bryson said of Curry's surprise offer. "And I've never been to New York before."

While Curry has been fortunate not to have a friend or family member affected by cancer, he was drawn to Bryson's story when he was directed to the St. Jude hospital through his agent, Andy Ross.

Bryson, who played tight end and defensive end for his youth team, first complained that his chest hurt after football practice in October 2007. Later, he said he couldn't catch his breath, and it was thought he had asthma.

But one month after that, his family was hit with horrible news: Bryson had acute myeloid leukemia and would need to immediately go by ambulance four hours away to St. Jude, a top pediatric cancer treatment hospital.

Bryson began a grueling schedule of chemotherapy while his family searched in vain for a matching donor if he required a bone marrow transplant.

"It was disheartening to know that we didn't have a match," said his father, Lorace "Ace" Merriweather.

As Bryson got stronger, he helped lead bone marrow drives and fundraisers for St. Jude hospital in his hometown. His parents also decided to have another child.

Six months after Bryson went into remission, his mother, Becky, gave birth to Bryan in December. It was recently determined he's a genetic match with his older brother.

"If the cancer does come back, we now have a donor match in our own family," Bryson's father said. "That's been another amazing journey that we've gone through."

Now that journey will take Bryson and his dad to New York. Curry will meet them on Thursday and tour the city. They'll attend some events together Friday, and Bryson will be there Saturday when Curry could be the No. 1 overall pick by the Detroit Lions.

"After meeting Bryson, I just think it was the perfect route to go," Curry said. "Bryson has already done some things in the community and he's only 12."

Statistics show that Bryson has a 30 to 40 percent chance of relapse, and a cell mutation he has puts him in an even higher risk group. But the lanky Bryson is strong enough now to play sports again. He's running track this spring and hopes to resume football this fall.

He'll also have stories to tell his friends after experiencing the draft first-hand with a potential future NFL star.

"It's just been a blessing to go through this whole experience. It renewed our faith," Ace Merriweather said. "It also shows Bryson's courage and will to fight through this. He didn't ask for it, but he's taken on the challenge. I know he's going to have a long life ahead of him.

"Maybe one day we'll be at the draft inviting somebody."
