NFL owners voted Monday to modify the schedule to ease the burden of cross-country road trips.
Last year, the Patriots and the Jets had to make West Coast trips to play AFC West opponents and NFC West teams. The Patriots chose to remain on the West Coast twice last season -- for back-to-back games against San Francisco and San Diego in October and Seattle and Oakland in December -- to minimize the wear-and-tear the schedule presented.
The Jets, meanwhile, played at San Diego and then had to travel to Oakland three weeks later. In December, New York visited San Francisco, returned home to play Buffalo, then went back to the coast to play Seattle. The Jets were upset by the Raiders as part of a late-season swoon that prevented them from making the playoffs.
Under the new plan, teams wouldn't have to visit two West Coast teams, just one, along with a team closer to the Midwest. Specifically, Oakland will be paired with Denver, and San Diego will be paired with Denver. In the NFC, Arizona and San Francisco will be paired as will St. Louis and Seattle.
Since 2002 when the league expanded to eight four-team divisions, the NFL has used a rotating formula in which a team plays four opponents within its conference once every three years and four teams in the other conference every four years.
Teams that have road games against Denver and Oakland will get home games against Kansas City and San Diego. The opposite scenario will also be true. The same format of home-and-away games with the paired cities holds true for the NFC as well.
The proposal was submitted by the broadcast committee for the purpose of creating a better balance for travel to the West Coast. Currently, the AFC South and the NFC West are scheduled to play the AFC West in 2010, which is when the new plan would be starting.
Senior NFL writer John Clayton contributed to this report.

Cardinals moesten afgelopen seizoen naar new york, washington, new england, charlotte.

They will expect top compensation in a trade or they will keep him with the franchise tag. They could tag Peppers again next year if they had to, and if there wasn't a salary cap, it would be expensive but not impossible. I also have the feeling that Peppers isn't totally determined to leave Carolina.

When asked specifically about Jay Cutler and if Mayhew would consider trading the top pick for the unhappy Broncos quarterback, he didn't shoot down the idea.

LOS ANGELES -- The city of Walnut says it has filed a lawsuit to stop the proposed construction of a professional football stadium in a neighboring Southern California city.
Walnut officials said in a statement Wednesday that the lawsuit accuses the city of Industry of approving the $800 million venue without sufficiently reviewing its environmental impact.
The Industry city council unanimously approved the plan last month as a way to try to lure an NFL team back to the Los Angeles area.
Industry is located about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
Walnut fears the stadium could lead to traffic-clogged streets and rowdy fan behavior.
Industry city manager Kevin Radecki didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

Cutler traded to the Lions
quote:CUTLER: “I WAS SURPRISED THEY DECIDED TO TRADE ME THIS SOON”
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 1, 2009, 11:27 p.m.
Breaking his public silence and speaking out for the first time since he was officially placed on the trading block, soon-to-be ex-Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler told Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com that he was “shocked” that the Broncos decided to give up on a potential reconciliation.
Ultimately, Cutler said he didn’t want to be traded in an article co-written by Alex Marvez.
“I was surprised they decided to trade me this soon,” Cutler said. “I didn’t want to get traded. This wasn’t me. They [The Broncos] had been going back and forth saying things, wanting me to be their quarterback and then they didn’t. I really didn’t want this. I love Denver. I really like my teammates. I didn’t want it to get this far.”
Cutler denied the Broncos’ claims that he didn’t respond to their repeated efforts to get in touch with him over the past 10 days, saying that he hasn’t heard from the team during that span.
According to Cutler, the first time he heard from the Broncos over that period of time was when they told him Tuesday that they had given up on any attempts for a compromise and would now actively attempt to trade him.
As for where Cutler will wind up, the quarterback said he thought that he will land in the NFC. He didn’t express a preference for his next NFL employer.
Citing a source, Glazer and Marvez reported that the Broncos want more than a first-round and a third-round draft pick in exchange for Cutler.
Glazer interviewed Cutler at a UFC Fight Night 18 card in Nashville, Tenn.
If UFC really wants to create some buzz, perhaps they could broker a no-holds-barred cage match between Cutler and Broncos coach Josh McDaniels. Just kidding.

Ben echt benieuwd waar Cutler heen gaat.
En wat een sukkel ben je danquote:The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.
The Broncos confirmed the move.
To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.
To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back an undisclosed draft choice in a later round.
The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.
The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.
Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.
Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

Future Hall of Famer agrees to three-year deal
By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter
Lost in the hysteria of the Jay Cutler trade Thursday was the Bears' acquisition of another player with Pro Bowl credentials.
Veteran left tackle Orlando Pace, who the Rams released last month after 12 seasons in St. Louis, agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract with the Bears. He will be paid $6.1 million for the 2009 season, according to a league source.
Pace, a seven-time Pro Bowler, is expected to start at left tackle next season and allow Chris Williams, last year's first-round pick, to shift to right tackle.
