Battlestar Galactica is een populaire drama / science fiction geori�nteerde televisieserie bedacht en geproduceerd door Ronald D. Moore. De huidige televisie serie is een voortboorduursel op de gelijknamige mini-serie uit 2003. De mini-serie en televisie serie staan los van de Battlestar Galactica serie uit de jaren 70, al wordt er in de huidige serie regelmatig verwezen naar de oude serie als hommage.
Het grootste verschil tussen de 'oude' en 'nieuwe' BSG is de setting; de oude serie staat bekend als een beetje cheesy en camp terwijl de nieuwe mini-serie en televisie serie bekend staan om hun enorm donkere karakter en ze doen duidelijk een poging aan te leunen bij de Amerikaanse psychologie van na 9/11. Overal kunnen verraders schuilgaan en achterdocht is het hoogste gebod. Verder ontbreekt een groot deel van de speelse humor die de oorspronkelijke serie tot een succes maakte.

De nieuwe serie werd dan ook door een deel van de fans van de oude serie niet goed ontvangen. Helaas voor hen kon de mini-serie rekenen op lovende kritieken in de pers, aanmoedigende kijkcijfers en goede DVD verkopen. Het duurde dan ook niet lang voordat Universal brood zag in een televisie serie die verder gaat waar de mini-serie is gebleven.

De re�ncarnatie van Battlestar Galactica kan rekenen op veel positieve kritieken, zo riepen in 2006 vooraanstaande bladen als Time Magazine en Rolling Stone Battlestar Galactica uit tot beste televisie serie. Naast deze positieve kritieken slaagde Battlestar Galactica er in 2006 in een prestigieuze Peabody Award in de wacht te slepen voor 'excellence in television', ook won Battlestar Galactica een Hugo Award en Saturn Award.

Het succes van de huidige serie kan worden verklaard door het grote aantal non-science fiction fans die Battlestar Galactica weten te waarderen, Battlestar Galactica is in eerste instantie dan ook karakter gedreven serie, met kick ass CGI scenes.

The former Colonial Secretary of Education was 43rd in the line of succession when she assumed the presidency of the Twelve Colonies on the day of the Cylon attack. Projecting class and confidence, she possesses great innate intelligence and stoicism.

William Adama

The Admiral of the fleet and commanding officer of the battlestar Galactica is an experienced, pragmatic leader who does not stand on ceremony, preferring a simple day uniform with a minimum of insignia. Is often affectionately called "the Old Man", though not to his face.

Lee "Apollo" Adama

This former Viper pilot (callsign "Apollo") and only surviving son of Admiral Adama has been promoted to commanding officer of the battlestar Pegasus. Lee Adama's strained relationship with his father also causes him to become a strong supporter of Colonial President Laura Roslin.

Kara "Starbuck" Thrace

The fleet's most experienced, impulsive, and rebellious Viper pilot (callsign "Starbuck"). Starbuck has a natural talent for flying, and is considered Galactica's best pilot, although she is also known for being an avid card player and drinker.


Sharon "Boomer/Athena" Valerii

Sharon was a well-liked rookie Raptor pilot (callsign "Boomer") until her true identity was revealed � by her attempted public assassination of William Adama. One of her multiple copies surrendered to custody aboard the Galactica, and has since aided the humans against her own people.

Gaius Baltar
James Callis
This brilliant but unstable scientist recently defeated Laura Roslin to become President of the Twelve Colonies. Stylish, handsome, and idiosyncratic, he often displays the false humility of the truly arrogant and also is secretly plagued by unexplained visions of the beautiful Cylon Number Six.

Caprica Six
Tricia Helfer
She wields her drop-dead looks as a weapon, and her keenly intelligent eyes seem to look straight through Gaius Baltar's self-serving lies. Every move and gesture of this human-form Cylon is smooth and precise. She claims that God talks to her � and she, in turn, talks to Baltar.

Saul Tigh
Michael Hogan
The Galactica's executive officer is tightly wound, moody, and a highly functional alcoholic. He expresses contempt at civilians' unwillingness to forego such comforts as "a thimbleful of water a day" and seems genuinely shocked that they refuse to accept martial law.

Karl C. "Helo" Agathon

Sharon Valerii's former ECO and fellow Raptor pilot (callsign "Helo") was stranded on Cylon-occupied Caprica after the initial attack. He eventually returned to Galactica and was recently promoted to executive officer of the ship.


Anastasia "Dee" Dualla
Kandyse McClure
A native of Sagittaron. Anastasia "Dee" Dualla served in the Galactica's Combat Information Center (CIC) before transferring to the Battlestar Pegasus. She is no-nonsense, tough and pragmatic.


Galen "Chief" Tyrol
Aaron Douglas
The Galactica's deck chief has spent a lifetime caring for big machines and the people who fix them. In the process, he has become the kind of man for whom his crew would do anything. Always looking out for the little guy.


Felix Gaeta
Alessandro Juliani
The current senior officer of the watch in Galactica's CIC. He's a multitalented man who once hoped to use the military as a decorous path to a prestigious career, only to see his ambitions crushed by the Cylon attack. Can always be found in close proximity to the fleet's power brokers.

Battlestar Galactica aka "The Bucket"

One of the first twelve Battlestars built, the Galactica represents the Colonial planet Caprica.
During her service, the Galactica formed a part of Battlestar Group 75 (BSG 75), a Colonial force described by series creator Ronald D. Moore as a mixed-force of vessels somewhat similar to a US Navy carrier battle group.
Like any of her sister ships, which may have survived the original Cylon War, the Galactica underwent refits and upgrades. However, her computer systems were neither networked nor integrated by any of her commanding officers, up to and including her final commander, William Adama.

Due to this lack of network integration at the time of the Cylon attack, the Galactica was immune to the infiltration program used by the Cylons to disable Colonial vessels and defence systems, using the Command Navigation Program (CNP), developed by Dr. Gaius Baltar.

At the time of the Cylon Attack, Galactica was 50 years old and she was undergoing formal decommissioning from the Colonial fleet following her retirement as an operational vessel. She had been due to become a museum ship; a combined living museum commemorating the Cylon War and educational centre. Due to its age, the ship is unofficially known as "The Bucket". Another nickname used by the crew is "The Big G".



Battlestar Pegasus aka "The Beast"

Substantially newer, larger and more powerful than the Galactica, The Battlestar Pegasus is a Mercury Class Battlestar, assigned to Battlestar Group 62 of the Colonial Fleet, and commanded by Admiral Helena Cain at the time of the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies.
Thought to have been destroyed during the attack on the colonies, Pegasus escapes, and encounters the Battlestar Galactica.

Before the fall of the Twelve Colonies, the Pegasus had just docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards where it was due for a three-month overhaul. Many of the ships systems were offline, including the Command Navigation Program that the Cylons used to disable Colonial defences during their attack. The Cylons' opening wave hit the shipyard with several nuclear warheads, destroying five ships, including two Battlestars. The Pegasus lost 700 crew members.
As a result of the Cylons' devastating attack on the Twelve Colonies, Admiral Cain became increasingly iron-fisted.
