Andy applied himself in the match with the utmost intensity and dedication to the cause, determined to reach the quarterfinals for the first time, and at times played to a very high level. However, Roland Garros semifinalist Monfils was able to produce quality tennis at the key moments to squeeze out the victory.

The players were inseparable for the most part in the deciding set, both taking good care of their service games and making few inroads on the other’s serve. It was always going to come down to one or two points, and it was Monfils who was on the winning end of them.

With Andy serving at 3-4, the Parisian found the mark on two glorious forehand passes to break Andy’s resolve and earn a 5-3 lead. Serving for the match he made no mistake, sealing victory on his first match point with an ace.

Monfils goes on to face Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.

Andy, who remains a strong contender for one of the final four berths at Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, has two tournaments left to secure his place, staring with Lyon next week. Others around him in the ATP 2008 Race have also fallen early this week, including Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Gonzalez, David Ferrer and Stanislas Wawrinka, which should help his cause.

Het scorebord gaf aan dat hij geen challenges meer had, maar volgens de umpire had hij er nog 1 over. Het mannetje van de challenges wilde de animatie echter niet laten zien. Uiteindelijk was zelfs Tsonga het erover eens dat Roddick nog een challenge had, maar nog wilde men er niet aan. Toen werd de hoofdscheidsrechter erbijgehaald en uiteindelijk ging de challenge dan toch door (was overigens bij een 40-0 met Roddick aan service ).
Eerder in de derde set liet Roddick trouwens na een bal te challengen op BP tegen, die vol op de lijn was en er dus geen break zou zijn geweest

Venus had as little success as Serena when the match got under way. She lost her first service game at love, managed only one point on Braasch's serve and dropped her next serve.

But after going down 4-0, Venus held serve at love as Braasch hit several errors.

Perhaps boredom was setting in because Braasch then lost his own serve to 4-2 when Venus cracked a sizzling forehand past him on her second break point.

Braasch wasn't about to let the set get away. He stepped up his pace a bit, overpowered Venus on her serve and closed out the match with an ace.

"I took at least 50 per cent off my serve," Braasch said.

"I came out with a few hard ones, but not too much because then it's not fun anymore and it was supposed to be fun."

With temperatures hovering in the mid-30s, Roddick was leading 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2 2-1 when Djokovic, the men’s singles champion in 2008, retired after two hours and 29 minutes.

Djokovic was clearly not himself from the beginning of the third set, and laboured for the final 11 games of the match battling cramps and heat stress before taking the decision to withdraw.

The first set, which lasted 50 minutes, went on serve before Djokovic stole an early 4-0 lead in the tiebreak after some blistering groundstrokes. The Serb then ran Roddick around the court, putting away a forehand volley for a 5-2 lead, and, on serve, crushed a forehand into the open court to win the tiebreaker 7-3. Neither player was forced to defend a break point opportunity in the set, while Djokovic’s 16 unforced errors for the set largely negated his 21-10 advantage over Roddick in winners.

In the second set, Roddick earned the first two break points of the match in the seventh game and after 77 minutes of play, converting the break on the second of them and jumping to a 4-3 lead. The American then held a set point in Djokovic’s next service game, but the Serb recovered to hold and trail 4-5. Roddick then served out the set 6-4, producing four monster first serves and finishing the set winning 17 of the 18 points when he landed his first ball, serving at 82 per cent for the set. Djokovic won just two points on the Roddick serve for the set, which lasted 41 minutes.

Roddick continued his momentum into the first game of the third set, breaking Djokovic immediately only for the Serb to repay the favour in the very next game. Roddick held two break points in the following game, which went to deuce three times before Djokovic held serve to take a 2-1 lead. A distressed Djokovic then called for the trainer at the end of the third game of the set, with ice being rubbed into his calves and quads at the subsequent medical time-out. After Roddick held, the American broke Djokovic again to take a 3-2 lead after a superb backhand chip down the line which Djokovic could only drive into the net. Roddick then broke the Serb in the seventh game to love, Djokovic serving his fourth double fault of the match to fall behind 2-5. Roddick then comfortably served out the 45-minute third set to love, winning 32 points to Djokovic’s 19 for the set.

Djokovic saved four break points in a seven-minute opening game of the fourth set to hold for 1-0, and after Roddick held for 1-1, he broke Djokovic to love in the next game. Djokovic then retired, handing Roddick his passage to the final four.

The American, who has now qualified for his fourth Melbourne Park semifinal, will play the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal between Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and three-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer of Switzerland in the semifinals on Thursday night.

Andy Roddick heeft dinsdag een wildcard ontvangen voor de Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis. Door deze wildcard zullen de vijf beste Amerikanen hun opwachting maken tijdens het toernooi.

So it was that Roddick commenced his semifinal against Radek Stepanek in brisk fashion, breaking Stepanek’s serve straightaway, riding that cushion to a 6-3 first set victory.

But it was Stepanek who took the intiative, grabbing hold of a few points, making his way forward and frustrating Roddick just enough to snag the tie-break and level the match. A perplexed Roddick started the third quite angry at himself. Though he held to open the decisive set, in each of the next three games Roddick held a 40-15 – and lost each one to go down 3-1.

By now Stepanek held a comfortable cushion and Roddick was unwilling to do much more than use his serve, forehand and tenacity to grub his way out of a jam. Stepanek had become the initiator. Though his balls were hardly fast, they were well-directed, constantly confounding Roddick in the way that would please many a tennis connoisseur. At proper times, Stepanek slithered his way into the net to poke adroit volleys.

Andy will meet Frenchman Marc Gicquel on Saturday for a place in the Roland Garros fourth round.

World No. 46 Marc Gicquel is looking to reach the fourth round of a major for just the second time, having first done so at the 2006 US Open – when he lost to Roger Federer. The right-hander enjoyed a comfortable first-round win over No. 27 seed Rainer Schuettler before battling past Andreas Beck in four tight sets in the second round.

The 32-year-old Gicquel has compiled a 10-13 match record on the season, highlighted by quarter-final showings in Rotterdam and Casablanca. He also won an ATPChallenger Tour title on clay in Bordeaux earlier this month.

Andy takes a 2-0 career lead into the clash with Gicquel, having defeated the Frenchman on hard courts at the 2007 Australian Open and 2008 Los Angeles. Gicquel has a 2-13 match record against Top 10 players and has lost his past five efforts against the game’s elite.

Looking ahead to the clash, Andy said: “Obviously it’s going to be a challenging atmosphere. He’s certainly talented, certainly comfortable here. I didn’t see much of his match (on Thursday), but he moves real well. I’m sure he’s very comfortable moving on this surface. I think we’re both pretty familiar with each other’s games. We’ve played a couple times. Obviously it doesn’t get easier.”

The match will take place second on Suzanne Lenglen court on Saturday, with play beginning at 11 AM local time – 10 AM BST, 5 AM ET. Andy follows a ladies’ singles third-round match, so should take to court at around 12:30 PM local time

Roddick took just 55 minutes to down Kristof Vliegen 6-1 6-4.

The number two seed returned beautifully in the first set, seemingly able to pass his Belgian opponent at will, going 5-0 up before Vliegen could get on the board.

"Coming from clay to grass is one of the happiest days of my year," Roddick said.

"I don't have to make a lot of adjustments to my game to play on this surface."

Roddick cruised through a scrappy second set, breaking Vliegen at 4-4 then serving out the match.

"I just wanted to get it done before it had a chance to rain," smiled Roddick, the world number six.

He will next face either Australian Lleyton Hewitt, another four-times winner at Queen's and Wimbledon champion in 2002, or unseeded Portuguese Frederico Gil.

Andy Roddick is er vrijdag in geslaagd de halve finale van het grastoernooi ATP Queen’s te bereiken. Het treffen met de Kroaat Ivo Karlovic stond vooral in het teken van de specialiteit van beide spelers: de ace. Karlovic mocht zich in de kwartfinale servicekoning kronen met 26 aces, maar Roddick (24 aces) won de partij uiteindelijk. Het matchpoint verzilverde de Amerikaan toepasselijk met een ace: 7-6, 7-6.

Karlovic heeft in het huidige seizoen de meeste aces achter zijn naam staan in het tenniscircuit. De Kroaat sloeg 405 directe punten uit de eerste opslag in 23 wedstrijden. Roddick heeft ook een gemiddelde om van te smullen. In 36 wedstrijden sloeg Roddick 394 aces.

Roddick flashed into life against Lleyton Hewitt, the 2002 champion, firing 78 winners – including 43 aces – past the Australian for a 6-3, 6-7(10), 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 victory on Court One in three hours and 50 minutes. It was Roddick’s fifth straight win in the battle of the former World No. 1s and Grand Slam champions. Three weeks ago Roddick won the pair’s AEGON Championships meeting in two tie-break sets.

The 28-year-old Texas resident will now appear in his first Wimbledon semi-final since 2005, when he reached his second successive final, against third-seeded Scot Andy Murray on Friday.

Roddick served well to take the 27-minute first set, capitalising on two double faults from Hewitt in the Australian’s first service game. But some gutsy counter-punching from Hewitt, in a dramatic 22-point second-set tie-break, levelled the scoreline. Roddick had led 5-2 and had three set-points, but could not convert any of them. Hewitt also squandered two set points, before finally levelling the match when Roddick fired a forehand long.

A left leg injury to Hewitt let Roddick run through the third-set tie-break and it got worse for the World No. 56 when he has his serve broken at the start of the fourth set. But Hewitt’s Fanatics, a large group of Australian fans, cheered their player back to life to take the pair’s 12 meeting into a fifth and deciding set.

Roddick clinched the decisive service break in the ninth game and went on to held serve for victory when Hewitt hit a forehand volley long. Hewitt, who missed six months last year with a hip injury, committed 42 unforced errors and served nine double faults in his first Grand Slam championship quarter-final since the 2006 US Open.

It certainly is a process. And Brook has been a very calming influence, someone I can confide in and not have to put up a super brave front in front of." And, 18 defeats or not, the Wimbledon final is a whole new ball game in Roddick's view. "I'm happy where my game's at right now."
