Het in april geboren zoontje van Sarah Palin, beoogd vice-president van John McCain, is niet van haar, maar van haar oudste dochter Bristol (16). Geruchten hierover dreigen het verrassingseffect van haar verkiezing tot running mate te overschaduwen, meldt de Britse krant The Times.

Verschillende Amerikaanse websites maken melding van de groeiende geruchtenstroom rond het zoontje van Palin, dat in april met het syndroom van Down werd geboren.

Dat de Republikeinse presidentskandidaat afgelopen vrijdag de onbekende Palin aanwees als zijn running mate, kwam als een donderslag bij heldere hemel voor veel politiek analisten.

Schande
Inmiddels zijn tientallen onderzoeksjournalisten - al dan niet in dienst van de Democraten - afgereisd naar haar thuisstaat Alaska om te wroeten in het verleden van Palin.

En niet zonder resultaat: gisteren doken op Amerikaanse internetfora berichten op dat Trig, het oudste kind van Palin niet van haar is, maar van haar zestienjarige dochter Bristol.

Palin zou net doen alsof Trig haar eigen dochter is om de 'schande' van de tienerzwangerschap van haar oudste dochter te verhullen.

Excuus
Ze zou haar naaste medewerkers afgelopen maart compleet hebben verrast met de mededeling dat zij zwanger was van haar vijfde kind. Palin zou toen al in haar zevende maand van haar zwangerschap zijn geweest - zonder dat dit duidelijk aan haar was te zien. Ook op foto's van afgelopen voorjaar lijkt haar buik niet gegroeid.

Daarnaast is het volgens de geruchten 'toevallig' dat Bristol de laatste vijf maanden van het afgelopen schooljaar miste vanwege een 'virus'. Volgens website Daily Kos is dit echter op middelbare scholen een veelgebruikt excuus om een tienerzwangerschap te verdoezelen.

Tenslotte worden vraagtekens geplaatst bij het feit dat Palin drie dagen nadat ze van haar zoontje zou zijn bevallen al weer aan het werk was - ondanks de extra zorg die Trig nodig heeft omdat hij het syndroom van Down heeft.

Sinds orkaan Katrina is New Orleans een Republikeins bolwerk: 100.000 zwarte Democraten zijn voorgoed vertrokken.

Orkaan Gustav nadert en de evacuatie van New Orleans is in volle gang. Het gaat een stuk soepeler dan drie jaar geleden, toen Katrina de stad verwoestte en de Republikein George Bush een zootje maakte van de hulpverlening. De jazz-stad was met de grond gelijk gemaakt, maar de Republikeinen lieten New Orleans in de steek. Bush kwam pas een paar dagen later, om vanuit een helikopter naar het water te kijken.

Vreemd genoeg staat de Grand Old Party in de opiniepeilingen voor de komende presidentsverkiezingen in Louisiana – waar New Orleans de belangrijkste stad van is – toch op een comfortabele voorsprong. McCain vs. Obama: 55 tegen 38 procent. Zo’n 100.000 Democratische kiezers, vooral zwarten, hebben na de verwoesting de wijk genomen naar naburige staten. Edward Chervenak, politicoloog aan de Universiteit van New Orleans: ‘De zwarte bevolking in de regio is met 41 procent gedaald. In de stad New Orleans vertrok meer dan de helft van alle zwarte inwoners! De regio is ‘verwit’. De verdeling zwart-wit ligt nu ongeveer gelijk, terwijl zwarten vóór de storm nog de overgrote meerderheid vormden.’

De oorzaak is volgens hem van praktische aard: ‘Zwarte mensen hebben niet het geld om terug te keren. Veel inwoners moesten hun huis van de grond af opnieuw bouwen. Zoiets is alleen weggelegd voor de rijkere, vaak witte bevolking.’

Democraten hebben niks gedaan met de onvrede


In de staat Louisiana zijn sinds orkaan Katrina ongeveer 125.000 Democratische kiezers spoorloos verdwenen.

De Democraten hebben de onvrede over de nasleep van de ramp niet kunnen verzilveren. Sterker nog: eind 2007 verloren ze zelfs het gouverneurschap aan de Republikeinse kandidaat Bobby Jindal, die zittend Democrate Kathleen Blanco versloeg. Louisiana lijkt juist meer dan ooit een Republikeinse staat te worden.

Toch blijven de Democraten hoop houden, want de historische statistieken zijn gunstig: Louisiana is een van de weinige zuidelijke staten die soms op een Democraat stemmen (Carter, 1976; Clinton, 1992, 1996). En de sfeer is optimistisch, zeker na de goed ontvangen Democratische conventie van vorige week.

Dat bevestigt Scott Jordan, voorlichter van de Democratische Partij in Louisiana. Hij belt vanaf het vliegveld van Denver en is licht nerveus op zoek naar het eerste de beste vliegtuig naar Louisiana om in ‘hurricane preparation mode’ te gaan. ‘De staat Louisiana gaat een rol van betekenis spelen in de komende verkiezingen.’

Maar die rol zal waarschijnlijk niet in het voordeel van de Democraten zijn. De kille cijfers: bij de gouverneursverkiezingen van 2003 kwamen in de regio New Orleans ruim 450.000 kiezers opdagen. In 2007 was dat aantal geslonken tot 350.000. De stad New Orleans kampte met het grootste verlies: 44 procent van de geregistreerde kiezers woonde niet langer in de stad waar ze ingeschreven stonden.

Dat zijn minder kiezers, maar vooral minder Democraten. In de hele staat zijn zo’n 125.000 Democraten spoorloos verdwenen. In de regio New Orleans ontbraken vorig jaar 85.000 Democratische kiezers. De schade bij de Republikeinen bleef beperkt: zij moesten het met 12.000 kiezers minder doen.

De orkaan in New Orleans heeft de politiek ingrijpend veranderd, maar dus niet in het voordeel van de Democraten. New Orleans was de enige regio die de winst van de Republikeinen in de staat Louisiana in gevaar zou kunnen brengen. Ook nu blijft de regio weliswaar overwegend Democratisch, maar het heeft niet meer die politieke impact van weleer. De reden is demografisch. Want waar de bevolking van de regio New Orleans vroeger 10 procent van het totale electoraat in Louisiana uitmaakte, is dat nu slechts 6 procent. De kans dat de Democraten in het kleine zuidelijke staatje met de winst aan de haal gaan, is dan ook uiterst klein.

Maar Scott Jordan geeft de hoop niet op: ‘Ik kom net van de Democratische Conventie. Wow, man! Je had erbij moeten zijn, je had het moeten voelen. Het leeft echt. Mensen zijn klaar voor verandering. Overal, ook in Louisiana. Zelfs daar zullen de traditionele Republikeinen dit keer voor Obama gaan.’

En weg is hij, in het vliegtuig naar de volgende orkaan, die volgens de laatste berichten nog verwoestender zal zijn dan Katrina.

Er zijn dus minimaal honderduizend mensen weggevlucht die overwegend Democratisch waren. Zoals het er staat dan zou je kunnen betogen dat het de Republikeinen niet slecht uit komt en er misschien daarom weinig aan gedaan hebben.

Re: babygate - I don’t know what’s being reported. Here, however, is the truth. Trig is Sarah and Todd’s baby.

When Sarah first learned she was pregnant, it was shocking and overwhelming. While she and Todd had not planned to have anymore children, it is common knowledge among their family and friends that neither of them ever surgically insured that they wouldn’t have any "late in life" surprises/blessings.

This, to me, showed a disturbing lack of judgement. If you want to ask the citizens of a state to let you run the state for four years, to me she and Todd should have thought ahead and determined that the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy wouldn’t have been prudent for either the child, their family, their extended family (who are the ones who end up helping them raise their current four children) or the citizens of the state.

They either didn’t think this through, or didn’t care. Not sure. But, either way, to me and to others, it was a lack of foresight and judgement.

But it is the same vein - this lack of judgement - Sarah showed, on the campaign trail for governor, when asked who would raise her children should she win, she promptly stated that Todd would quit his job and stay at home with the kids (Todd works a "Slope" week on/week off schedule).

Sarah was elected and then - whoops. Todd didn’t like the stay at home gig - so Sarah, citing they needed money for the kid’s college (even though Track enlisted in the military) said Todd was returning to work. When asked about her statements on the campaign trail about how Todd would quit his job, Sarah said she’d actually never talked to him about what they would do if she was elected (in terms of his employment) and that she’d spoken out of turn when she spoke for him stating he’d quit his job.

Again, call me picky, but this is the kind of bizarre judgement Sarah routinely displays. Are you kidding me that she would run for governor and she and her husband would somehow not think to have a conversation about what to do with their four school aged kids? That’s insane. So, either her judgement is super goofy, or she wasn’t telling the truth. Either way, it’s not reassuring to now think this is someone who would be one 72 year old heartbeat away from having to call shots for the country/world.

So Todd trots himself back to work and Sarah is busy traipsing around the state and the nation. The kids are "farmed out" (this is the word used by thier associates in "the Valley") to family and friends to raise while Todd and Sarah are off having their respective careers (Sarah is famously quoted as saying, "My mom does whatever I need her to").

During this period is when Bristol, Sarah’s sixteen year old daughter, turns up pregnant. So, it’s kind of interesting to note that the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee and her sixteen year old junior in high school unwed daughter were carrying babies at the same time. Once Bristol’s condition became more obvious this summer, she was whisked out of sight and hasn’t been seen in public until yesterday in Ohio. This is why Trig’s blanket was strung across her entire abdomen and torso, but, when she walked down the stairs from the stage, in a profile shot, it was very clear to see she is well into her third trimester of her pregnancy.

It has come out in the past couple of days that she and her high school boyfriend had a quickie wedding and that she is home schooling her senior year.

The Anchorage Daily News has known about this for months - and haven’t touched the story. But I can’t imagine the national press or the Democratic Party will be as willing to turn a blind eye.

For me, once again it speaks to judgement. We all - every single one of us - even Sarah’s closest friends in the Valley (I know, I’ve been speaking to them) know she is in no way qualified for this position. At all.

But then, why would she accept the nomination, knowing that Bristol’s situation will come to light and knowing her hunger for national and international acclaim and attention will carry with it a mighty high price for her seventeen year old daughter who had absent parents last year and who turned up pregnant.

How embarrassing will it be for Bristol once the news (or the baby) comes out and not just the Valley, not just Alaska, not just the USA - but Bristol will be known the world over as the seventeen year old unwed - then quickly wed senior-in-high-school-homeschooled-teenage mom and daughter to the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee?

How hard will that degree of scrutiny and shame be?

How does one do that to one’s daughter?

How does one dash about the country for the next 66 days trying to pull off an image of the devoted mother of five when she, by and large, isn’t the one raising them and when one of them - her daughter, is in a truly vulnerable point in life; not to say anything about the needs of Trig. But maybe he doesn’t count, except as a talking point or a photo prop. But this is a person, a little boy who is going to require a tremendous amount of time and attention. From his mother.

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama jumped to his biggest lead since late July in public opinion polls, after his Aug. 28 speech to more than 75,000 people in a Denver football stadium when he accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

How long Obama holds the lead is open to question, as voters react to John McCain's surprise selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his running mate and Republicans begin their nominating convention tomorrow in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Obama leads McCain 49-41 percent in the most recent Gallup Poll daily tracking survey, which measured voter sentiment during a three-day period ending Aug. 28. The presidential contenders had been tied at 45 percent in the last Gallup tracking results before the Democrats started their Colorado convention. A separate tracking poll by Rasmussen Reports put Obama's advantage at 3 percentage points.

The 8 percentage-point lead in the Gallup survey almost matches Obama's biggest margin of the campaign, a 9-point bulge in tracking polls conducted July 24-26, Gallup said.

Obama's Denver speech on Aug. 28 attracted 38.4 million television viewers, 57 percent more than the audience in 2004, when Massachusetts Senator John Kerry accepted the party's presidential nomination, according to Nielsen Co.

Convention Bump

The party conventions historically give candidates a boost because of the media coverage they receive as more voters begin paying attention to the campaign. The post-convention bump in poll numbers for Obama is greater than the 3 percentage point average gain that Kerry got after the 2004 Democratic convention and is within the historical average.

Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said before the most recent polls that because of the back-to-back conventions and the narrow divide among voters he didn't expect a major advantage for his candidate.

``I wasn't looking for a huge bounce,'' Axelrod said in an interview on Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt'' program. ``I don't think there's a lot of play in this electorate.''

McCain's ability to rebound will be challenged by the focus on Hurricane Gustav, which is forecast to slam into the U.S. Gulf Coast just as the Republican convention is getting under way.

Views of Palin

In a separate USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Aug. 29, about 40 percent of respondents said they consider Palin, a 44-year-old first-term governor, qualified to be president -- the lowest level since President George H.W. Bush picked Indiana Senator Dan Quayle as his running mate in 1988. One-third of the people surveyed don't think Palin is qualified, and the rest had no opinion.

By comparison, 57 percent of Americans considered Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden qualified to take the top office if necessary, with 18 percent doubting his qualifications.

Palin may not attract large numbers of disillusioned supporters of Hillary Clinton. Only 9 percent of Democratic women said Palin makes them more likely to support the Republican ticket; 15 percent were less likely to back McCain. Among all women, 20 percent said Palin's selection made them more likely to vote for McCain and 11 percent were less likely.

Half of those polled had never heard of Palin before her selection, the Gallup/USA Today poll found.

In a Rasmussen Reports tracking poll, 35 percent of those surveyed said Palin's selection made them more likely to vote for McCain, while 33 percent said they were less likely to back the Arizona senator.

Most voters questioned in the Rasmussen poll had a good impression of Palin, who beat out more experienced contenders to join McCain's ticket.

Obama, a senator from Illinois, had a 47-44 percent advantage over McCain in Rasmussen tracking results through Aug. 30, the same margin he had a week ago, before the Democratic convention began. Including undecided voters who say they're leaning toward one candidate or another, Obama leads 49-46 percent, Rasmussen said.

Gallup's tracking poll interviews at least 1,000 U.S. adults each day, and reflects combined data from the most recent three days of polling, and has an error margin of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Rasmussen surveys 1,000 likely voters each night, and combines three days of polling in each tracking result. Its poll also has a plus or minus 2 percentage point error margin.
