Roman Abramovich last night launched a £12million bid to sign Euro 2008 star Andrei Arshavin - and fulfil his dream of having a fellow Russian as a first-team regular at Chelsea.

Chelsea's owner personally intervened to snatch Arshavin away from Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are also tracking him.

It is understood Arshavin will now fly into London for talks with Chelsea, who have had a bid accepted by the playmaker's Zenit St Petersburg club.

A source at Zenit said: "Chelsea have been in contact, a deal has been agreed and Arshavin will fly to London to discuss terms.

"He was very attracted by playing in Spain but feels English football
would suit his style better - and with Roman Abramovich involved there is another link and reason."

Billionaire Abramovich is championing the deal himself after Arshavin, 27, guided Russia to the Euro 2008 semi-finals.

But despite saying he always dreamt of playing for Barca, Chelsea have the financial clout to meet his demands as he is already on £60,000-aweek at Zenit and has a £12m buy-out clause.

CHELSEA last night offered Frank Lampard a new £140,000-a-week take-it-or-leave-it contract which would make him the highest-paid player in British football, in a desperate bid to keep him out of the clutches of Inter Milan.


The attempt to persuade the England midfielder to stay came after Express Sport revealed yesterday that contract talks had reached deadlock and that Lampard was upset that new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari had not yet contacted him to assure him of his future at the club.


If Lampard accepts, he will move above captain John Terry in the Stamford Bridge pay scale as the highest earner at the club – and in the country.


Terry is on around £135,000 a week, while other stars such as Germany skipper Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko are earning around £130,000 a week.


Chelsea’s dramatic late move appears to be a last-ditch offer to the England midfielder, who is due back for pre-season training on Monday.

Chelsea heeft een bod uitgebracht op Kaká, dat liet de vice-voorzitter van zijn club AC Milan, Adriano Galliani, zondag weten. Hoewel het volgens de Galliani ging om een ‘astronomisch bedrag’, ligt het niet voor de hand dat Kaká daadwerkelijk naar Londen verhuist.

“Er is een zeer hoog bod van Chelsea binnengekomen voor Kaká, meldt Galliani tegenover de Italiaanse krant La Stampa. Eerder liet de Braziliaan weten niets te voelen voor een vertrek uit Milaan. Ook de club zelf wil dolgraag met Kaká verder.

Andrea Pirlo staat tevens in de belangstelling van veel andere clubs. “Er is veel navraag naar hem gedaan”, bevestigt de vice-voorzitter, “desondanks zijn zowel hij als zijn zaakwaarnemer niet naar me toegekomen om een hoger salaris te eisen.”
