De achterban van Clinton is de enige reden om haar als running mate te nemen. Het is natuurlijk de vraag in hoeverre haar achterban van belang is bij de uiteindelijke verkiezingen en of ze toch uiteindelijk niet gewoon op Obama stemmen zonder Clinton als running mate. Vanzelfsprekend zal het in ieder geval niet zijn.

Obama moet iemand nemen die zijn geloofwaardigheid in stand houdt en tevens de mensen aanspreekt die hij niet direct aanspreekt.

MELBOURNE - Hiv-besmetting zou bij mannen kunnen worden voorkomen door eens per week een laagje oestrogeen op de penis te smeren. De vrouwelijke hormonen versterken het van nature aanwezige laagje keratine, dat op die manier kan functioneren als natuurlijk condoom.

Dat schrijven Australische onderzoekers van de universiteit van Melbourne in een woensdag gepubliceerd artikel. Het keratinelaagje (een eiwit) van de huid werkt als natuurlijke barrière tegen virussen, maar is niet sterk genoeg om hiv te weren.

Door het laagje te versterken zou de huid mogelijk wel bestand kunnen zijn tegen het virus dat tot aids kan leiden.

De onderzoekers ontdekten het sterke natuurlijke condoom toen zij twaalf voorhuiden insmeerden met het vrouwelijke hormoon.

DALLAS — Opponents of teaching evolution, in a natural selection of sorts, have gradually shed those strategies that have not survived the courts. Over the last decade, creationism has given rise to “creation science,” which became “intelligent design,” which in 2005 was banned from the public school curriculum in Pennsylvania by a federal judge.

Now a battle looms in Texas over science textbooks that teach evolution, and the wrestle for control seizes on three words. None of them are “creationism” or “intelligent design” or even “creator.”

The words are “strengths and weaknesses.”

Starting this summer, the state education board will determine the curriculum for the next decade and decide whether the “strengths and weaknesses” of evolution should be taught. The benign-sounding phrase, some argue, is a reasonable effort at balance. But critics say it is a new strategy taking shape across the nation to undermine the teaching of evolution, a way for students to hear religious objections under the heading of scientific discourse.

Already, legislators in a half-dozen states — Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri and South Carolina — have tried to require that classrooms be open to “views about the scientific strengths and weaknesses of Darwinian theory,” according to a petition from the Discovery Institute, the Seattle-based strategic center of the intelligent design movement.

“Very often over the last 10 years, we’ve seen antievolution policies in sheep’s clothing,” said Glenn Branch of the National Center for Science Education, a group based in Oakland, Calif., that is against teaching creationism.

The “strengths and weaknesses” language was slipped into the curriculum standards in Texas to appease creationists when the State Board of Education first mandated the teaching of evolution in the late 1980s. It has had little effect because evolution skeptics have not had enough power on the education board to win the argument that textbooks do not adequately cover the weaknesses of evolution.

Yet even as courts steadily prohibited the outright teaching of creationism and intelligent design, creationists on the Texas board grew to a near majority. Seven of 15 members subscribe to the notion of intelligent design, and they have the blessings of Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican.

What happens in Texas does not stay in Texas: the state is one of the country’s biggest buyers of textbooks, and publishers are loath to produce different versions of the same material. The ideas that work their way into education here will surface in classrooms throughout the country.

“ ‘Strengths and weaknesses’ are regular words that have now been drafted into the rhetorical arsenal of creationists,” said Kathy Miller, director of the Texas Freedom Network, a group that promotes religious freedom.

The chairman of the state education board, Dr. Don McLeroy, a dentist in Central Texas, denies that the phrase “is subterfuge for bringing in creationism.”

“Why in the world would anybody not want to include weaknesses?” Dr. McLeroy said.

The word itself is open to broad interpretation. If the teaching of weaknesses is mandated, a textbook might be forced to say that evolution has an “inability to explain the Cambrian Explosion,” according to the group Texans for Better Science Education, which questions evolution.

LIMBURG - De 38-jarige Ed Houben is zelfverklaard recordspermadonor, niet-anoniem. De afgelopen zes jaar verwekte de Limburger door de aanlevering van zijn zaad bij uiteenlopende moeders 45 kinderen via kunstmatige inseminatie. Houben, één van de weinige spermadonors die niet afhaakte toen het anonieme spermadonorschap vanaf 2002 werd verboden, organiseerde in Maastricht een 'familiedag' voor zijn nageslacht.

Twaalf van de kinderen kwamen daar kennismaken met 'de man van het zaadje'. Houben speelde zijn rol als 'pater familias' gekleed in een T-shirt met opdruk van een zaadcel en het onderschrift, naar de Romeinse keizer Julius Ceasar, 'veni, vidi, vici' (ik kwam, zag en overwon).

Sommige moeders schrokken wel toen ze hoorden hoeveel nakomelingen Houben al rond heeft lopen. Zelf wil de stadsgids doorgaan tot minimaal vijftig kinderen. (GPD)

Humans can see into the future, says a cognitive scientist. It's nothing like the alleged predictive powers of Nostradamus, but we do get a glimpse of events one-tenth of a second before they occur.

And the mechanism behind that can also explain why we are tricked by optical illusions.

Researcher Mark Changizi of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York says it starts with a neural lag that most everyone experiences while awake. When light hits your retina, about one-tenth of a second goes by before the brain translates the signal into a visual perception of the world.

Scientists already knew about the lag, yet they have debated over exactly how we compensate, with one school of thought proposing our motor system somehow modifies our movements to offset the delay.

Changizi now says it's our visual system that has evolved to compensate for neural delays, generating images of what will occur one-tenth of a second into the future. That foresight keeps our view of the world in the present. It gives you enough heads up to catch a fly ball (instead of getting socked in the face) and maneuver smoothly through a crowd. His research on this topic is detailed in the May/June issue of the journal Cognitive Science,

Explaining illusions

That same seer ability can explain a range of optical illusions, Changizi found.

"Illusions occur when our brains attempt to perceive the future, and those perceptions don't match reality," Changizi said.

Here's how the foresight theory could explain the most common visual illusions - geometric illusions that involve shapes: Something called the Hering illusion, for instance, looks like bike spokes around a central point, with vertical lines on either side of this central, so-called vanishing point. The illusion tricks us into thinking we are moving forward, and thus, switches on our future-seeing abilities. Since we aren't actually moving and the figure is static, we misperceive the straight lines as curved ones.

"Evolution has seen to it that geometric drawings like this elicit in us premonitions of the near future," Changizi said. "The converging lines toward a vanishing point (the spokes) are cues that trick our brains into thinking we are moving forward - as we would in the real world, where the door frame (a pair of vertical lines) seems to bow out as we move through it - and we try to perceive what that world will look like in the next instant."

Grand unified theory

In real life, when you are moving forward, it's not just the shape of objects that changes, he explained. Other variables, such as the angular size (how much of your visual field the object takes up), speed and contrast between the object and background, will also change.

For instance, if two objects are about the same distance in front of you, and you move toward one of the objects, that object will speed up more in the next moment, appear larger, have lower contrast (because something that is moving faster gets more blurred), and literally get nearer to you compared with the other object.

Changizi realized the same future-seeing process could explain several other types of illusions. In what he refers to as a "grand unified theory," Changizi organized 50 kinds of illusions into a matrix of 28 categories. The results can successfully predict how certain variables, such as proximity to the central point or size, will be perceived.

Changizi says that finding a theory that works for so many different classes of illusions is "a theorist's dream."
