@ Drijfzand: IMO kun je simpel constateren dat door de tragedie Madeleine én het bewust door de ouder avond aan avond alleen laten van heel jonge kinderen (en wat had er allemaal niet kunnen gebeuren, kotsen, van trapje vallen, Madeleine had last van slaapwandelen etc etc) in een vreemde woning, in een vreemd land heeft de discussie wel opgelaaid. Overigens had het MW-resort een oppasplek waar je de kinderen kon brengen en ophalen. Ook kon er voor een grijpstuiver (geld was overigens geen punt, arm waren de McCanns zeker niet) een oppas in het apartement geregeld worden (een luisterservice bestond allang al niet meer), nanny's die overdag ook al bekend waren met de kinderen, maar nee, overdag hun kids daar parkeren was oké (what ever happend to a family-holiday?) maar 's avonds geen 'vreemden' over de vloer. Ze vonden onderlinge checks met hun vrienden een beter systeem. Dat laatste is nog maar de vraag of dat inderdaad is uitgevoerd, waarschijnlijk heeft de PJ daar CCTV-beelden van. Puntje nog, het apartement van de McCanns was vanuit de Tapasbar niet goed te zien, bovendien was het hekje voor de trap naar boven van het hoek-apartement niet afgesloten, eenmaal boven waren de patiodeuren ook niet afgesloten. Iedereen kon vanaf de weg daarnaast zo het apartement in want deze lag buiten het rondom aangebrachte securityhek. inderdaad zoals Kate McCann in augustus het zo treffend uitdrukte, a small window of opportunity < filmpje.
Natuurlijk is het zo dat je nooit voor 100% je kinderen kan beschermen voor van alles en nog wat. Al staan ze naast je, je draait even je hoofd om, of kijkt in een etalage en whoops, een onverlaat (al of niet met meerderen) kan op dat moment toeslaan en je kind wegrukken, in the spur of the moment. Maar het zo alleen laten van je kinderen zoals hierboven beschreven kun je ze zwaar aanrekenen naar mijn mening. Alle betrokkenen beschreven het dorp en het resort als heel kindvriendelijk, er gebeurde nooit wat. It felt so safe. Totdat het abductor verhaal moest worden onderbouwd, toen opeens hebben tig getuigen tig creepy mannen gezien, er over nadenkend, na al die maanden het nieuws volgend, moest het wel één van de gevaarlijkste plekken in Portugal zijn, en dat terwijl de McCanns al jaren in de Algarve op vakantie kwamen.

Natuurlijk is het zo dat je nooit voor 100% je kinderen kan beschermen voor van alles en nog wat. Al staan ze naast je, je draait even je hoofd om, of kijkt in een etalage en whoops, een onverlaat (al of niet met meerderen) kan op dat moment toeslaan en je kind wegrukken, in the spur of the moment. Maar het zo alleen laten van je kinderen zoals hierboven beschreven kun je ze zwaar aanrekenen naar mijn mening. Alle betrokkenen beschreven het dorp en het resort als heel kindvriendelijk, er gebeurde nooit wat. It felt so safe. Het gaat er mij om dat mensen die met kinderen op vakantie gaan dezelfde zorgvuldigheid zouden moeten hebben als wanneer ze thuis zijn, thuis zouden ze hun kinderen hopelijk ook niet alleen laten terwijl ze zelf weg gaan.quote:Op zondag 3 februari 2008 22:48 schreef Drijfzand het volgende:

Zeldzaamheden zijn nieuws, dagelijkse gebeurtenissen zijn statistieken...
Misschien even een enquete, hoeveel mensen hier met kinderen hebben enkel beveiligde warmwaterkranen?
Ik ben me er van bewust dat thuis de meeste ongelukken gebeuren, neemt niet weg dat ik het een goede zaak vindt om, na alles wat ik er over heb gelezen, de kinderopvang in vakantie parken nog eens nader te bekijken.
Ik vind dat als je kinderen hebt je verantwoordelijk bent voor hun veiligheid, dwz dat als er geen oppas in het app is en geen kinderopvang waar je je kind heen wil brengen je dan niet weg moet gaan, simpel gedacht misschien.
Het is toch niet echt verantwoordelijk te noemen als je 3 kinderen van 2 en 3 jaar oud alleen in een onafgesloten app achterlaat, de andere stellen uit de groep waar de McCanns mee op vakantie waren deden dat ook, buiten het feit dat er dan iemand makkelijk naar binnen kan gaan kunnen de kinderen ook wakker worden en zelf naar buiten gaan, lijkt me niet ongevaarlijk.

He said he believed the abductor killed the child, weighted down her body and then threw it from a pumping tower into the murky water beneath.

Er is een andere verdwijning die mogelijk gelinkt is, het zou ook kunnen dat de moeder van dat kindje zo probeert ook in het nieuws te komen, heel begrijpelijk, als je kind al zo lang weg is probeer je alles om aandacht te krijgen voor zijn verdwijning.

Local newspaper Diario de Noticias claims police still believe the couple were involved in hiding Madeleine's body. Meanwhile British divers postponed trawling a reservoir for Madeleine's body until next week.
They found only a cord after four days of searching at the site 40 miles from where she vanished.
Mr Healey said: "They haven't found anything yet. We have to believe a miracle can happen.
Metodo 3 has had 250 reported sightings of a suspect after an efit from a description by tourist Gail Cooper was released.

Ach ja, mogelijk zijn de McCanns alleen (vermiste) kindjes aan het verzamelen voor eigen doeleinden/carrières, zie dit verhaaltje van Kate. Die duikers hebben gezocht op een plek die al was gecheckt, Sky News: "The divers are not police officers and detectives have already checked the reservoir and ruled it out."Overigens wordt het vlerkenbureau Metodo 3 naast Brian Kennedy, ook door het fonds betaald: "The Fund is supporting the McCann family during their search for Madeleine and in ensuring a high profile of Madeleine’s abduction is maintained. Funding has been agreed for some private investigation to supplement the Portugese and UK authorities." Zoals ik het dan begrijp wordt eerst al het ontvangen geld aan de punten 1.1 t/m 1.1.3 (IMO de McCanns) uitgegeven, mét resultaat alvorens iemand anders (vermiste kind) daar iets van zou kunnen krijgen, dus de kans daarop lijkt nihil...

Ook de Daily Mail bericht hierover: Madeleine police 'to clear McCanns but admit case will never be solved' Kan ook een enorme spin zijn, of een oneigenlijke druk vanuit de UK, of de Portugezen zijn het goed zat vanwege de bureaucratische tegenwerking van de UK, of of of....quote:Alípio Ribeiro "drops" Maddie's case
By admitting that there was "haste" in constituting the parents of Madeleine McCann as arguidos for the disappearance of their daughter nine months ago in Praia da Luz, near Lagos, the Director of the National Judicial Police (PJ), Alípio Ribeiro, will be preparing the public opinion to the possibility that an accusation will not be made due to the lack of conclusive evidence. The idea is that the positions assumed by the director of PJ in public statements mean that he "has dropped" the case, have admitted to the DN sources that have accompanied the research of Maddie's case from the beginning.
With renown lawyers, both in England and in Portugal, which already exploited the declarations of Alípio Ribeiro, and a professional support, the McCanns may even be relieved of the status of arguidos within months, they are subjected to the minimum measure of coercion established in the Code of Criminal Procedure, the term of identity and residence, for which they indicated their residence in the English city of Rothley. After Alípio Ribeiro has said in an interview to Radio Renascença and Público newspaper that there has been precipitation in the constitution of the couple as arguidos, one of the couple's lawyers Rogerio Alves has said that the defense would ask that Kate and Gerry McCann stopped being arguidos in the process, which has as first arguido the Portuguese-British Robert Murat.
Possible filling
The consequent filling of the process could be the way forward, in a much more pessimistic perspective of sources connected to the issue that were contacted by the DN, although the PJ at Algarve continues committed to unveil the mystery, keeping as a stronger line of research the thesis of accidental death of the English child in the apartment 5A of the "Ocean Club" in Praia da Luz. That's why the words of Alípio Ribeiro have caused discomfort within the judicial police.
If the process is filed, for many will remain the belief that there was "one hundred percent political pressure" by the British. As the DN already said, a sense of "rebellion" continues installed between researchers face the recent statements made by Alípio Ribeiro, although the national director of the PJ has tried to appease them with an apology, trying to make believe that he was misunderstood when he spoke the word "precipitation" concerning the constitution of the couple as arguidos.

A position contradicted by investigators, to whom there are evidence that could lead to the arrest of Kate McCann for suspicion of involvement in the death and concealment of the body of her daughter, body who could have been buried or thrown at the sea in a bag.
Although Alípio Ribeiro has made these successive public statements - first, that arrests would not be made in Maddie's case and then that there was precipitation in the constitution of the McCanns as arguidos - the PJ never believed in the version of abduction transmitted by parents and these were constituted arguidos in September after the British sniffer dogs flagged several locations where the corpse of Madeleine McCann passed through from the apartment where she was spending holidays with her parents and twin brothers to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, towards the beach. Opvallend is wel dat ze het over Kate hebben: "Detectives in the Algarve are said to be furious over Mr Ribeiro's comments as they believe there is enough evidence to charge Kate McCann with involvement in her daughter's death, it was reported."
En verder schrijft de telegraph er vandaag over dat de Portugese bevolking er iig niet blij mee is: "The decision is said to have caused outrage among the Portuguese public." "Many people in Portugal believe the case against the couple, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley, Leics, is being dropped because of political pressure from the UK." Maar vooralsnog kán het Clarrie-spin zijn of een tactiek what ever, maar het gaat me danig irriteren, eigenlijk...

He added: "I am certain that all of my colleagues involved in the investigation are doing everything they can to discover what happened."
Mr Anjos's comments are certain to disappoint Madeleine's parents, who believe their daughter may still be alive and are desperate for police to continue the search.
They have hired private detectives Metodo 3 at a rate of £50,000-a-month because they believe the PJ have failed to follow up vital leads.
The police union leader's remarks come a day after senior police sources claimed the case is set to be closed and the parents' status as formal suspects revoked.
Portuguese police believe Madeleine died in the McCanns rented holiday apartment in Praia da Luz and her parents then disposed of her body.
The McCanns, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley, Leics, insist Madeleine was abducted last May 3, a few days short of her fourth birthday.
Mr Anjos has previously accused the couple of hampering the investigation and publicly questioned why they had waited 40 minutes before calling police when they discovered their daughter was missing.
He has also described their decision to hire private detectives as a "diversionary tactic." Meanwhile the Portuguese Justice Minister Alberto Costa has defended Alipio Ribeiro following his comments that officers acted "hastily" in making the couple suspects.
The minister said: "The fact that the national director of the PJ continues in his job says everything that I think about this matter."
Mr Ribeiro has come under fire from former heads of the PJ over his statement.
And Antonio Cluny, president of the District Attorney and Magistrates Council, urged him to show "restraint and reserve".
However, senior police sources claim Mr Ribeiro was preparing the public for the idea that the case may never be solved and nobody ever charged over Madeleine's disappearance.

Nou ja, ik denk wel dat de Portugezen dat gedoe met de UK vet zat zijn. Ik begrijp die opmerking wel van Alípio Ribeiro, als getuigen hadden de McCanns meer mee kunnen werken ipv als Arguido's (recht van zwijgen), maar ja, veel vragen wensten ze toen ook al niet te beantwoorden dus meewerken was voor die status ook al knudde. Kan best zijn dat het op een akkoordje wordt gegooid, de Arguido-status wordt opgeheven maar zodra er reden voor is de McCanns beschikbaar moeten blijven voor verdere vragen. Steeds meer forum-posters zijn 't een beetje zat, dat is ook onderdeel van de spin, iets wat ik eerder heb gepost dacht ik. Verveel de lezers met negatief nieuws, vaak ook hetzelfde, geen vooruitgang, er is geen zaak etc etc... ook ik ontwikkel een hoog gaapgehalte inmiddels...good one Clarence.

Tja Suko, ik denk dat iedereen het gedoe wel zat is, nietemin zou ik het heel erg vinden als deze zaak een stoffig archiefstuk wordt, net als zoveel vermiste kinderzaken, de marketingmachine heeft zo veel overuren gedraait idd dat velen het wel best vinden, het zou me niets verbazen als dat een tactiek is geweest.
Ik zou niet willen dat het Maddy fund niet ingezet zou worden voor andere kinderen die ook vermist zijn en wiens ouders het niet kunnen betalen om een onderzoek in te stellen, zoals het nu lijkt blijft al dat geld in handen van de McCanns, het is dan ook heel slim opgezet allemaal.

Nou, persoonlijk ben ik van mening dat je elke associatie met de McCanns moet vermijden zolang niet absoluut duidelijk is wat er is gebeurd. En verder ligt http://www.mccannfiles.com/ onder vuur. Het viel mij ook al op dat daar een PayPal-button opstaat om de site in de lucht te houden, ondanks de goede uitgebreide en actuele informatie ben ik het niet eens met de maker, Nigel Moore. Je bent er zelf mee begonnen, een kwestie die hem als zovelen aan het hart gaat en op zoek is naar de waarheid, maar is het niet gepast daar donaties voor te vragen. Dan zoek je zelf maar donateurs (adverteerders) maar val de lezers daar niet mee lastig. Clarence Mitchell geeft er natuurlijk een andere draai aan.

Naast het gedonder binnen de PJ, wat het team McCann natuurlijk heel goed uitkomt, zijn er gelukkig ook nog steeds posters die de zaken even uitmuntend op rij zetten, mogelijk journo's die hun ei niet in de reguliere pers kwijt kunnen, zoals ook Spudgun dat al eerder deed. This unhealthy concentration diverts attention from the things that are happening, or not happening, in the country, and really matter to the majority of us: the fact that our city streets are unsafe, admitted even by our own Home Secretary; the fact that Northern Rock is being bailed out by the public to the tune of billions of pounds and then handed over to someone filthy rich, like Richard Branson (yes, the same Richard Branson who has committed £100,000 to the McCanns in the event of a trial); the fact that Gordon Brown promised a referendum on the EU ...where is it?; the possibility (far-fetched, but maybe not) that when he went to China recently he gave them a lease on the UK for several trillion Yen – or just enough to last him until the next election in 2010....But, no worries. Just stick a picture of a female, as deshabillé as possible - Posh Spice, pregnant Angelina Jolie, pregnant (or crazy) Britney Spears, drugged and maybe pregnant Amy Winehouse – or the photogenic, and to some - sexy - Kate McCann (and that child she lost...oh, yes, Madeleine)... on the front page of the newspapers, and Brown and his drones can quietly go about their business.
So for months now we've had to read endless, usually dredged up, stories about the McCanns' 'search' for their 'abducted' daughter everywhere (everywhere except where she went missing) and about their “agony”, “heartbreak”, “anguish”, “despair”, “grief”, and their spokesperson Clarence Mitchell's accusations of 'ludicrous smears' and, of course and most importantly, reported “rage” from the McCann camp (when things weren't quite going to plan).
But there is more to this tale. It is a success story, a mystery and a red warning light. The McCann circus got off to a good start. The loss of their little girl either to a paedophile abductor, or because of an accident or murder, or even because she had been hidden, to appear again at the 'right' moment, was turned into a corporate venture in no time: a Fund collecting money from the public, with carefully worded small print allowing the McCanns to use the money for their own purposes (two mortgage repayments so far to our knowledge), the web-site selling tat – T-shirts, wristbands, posters with the copyrighted 'Madeleine' and eye coloboma logos. And this is only the beginning. If the couple's 'arguido/a' status is lifted what glittering prizes are a little way down the line? The USA, Oprah Winfrey, books, tv shows, possibly government funded children's ambassadorial job for Kate, political opportunity in the Labour Party for Gerry...a film, already under discussion - a remake of “Gone with the Wind” would be appropriate with Kate as Scarlett – and Madeleine? Well, she's the one who's gone with the wind – as Kate said on a recent tv programme “Whoosh, clunk, and she was gone!
Now, to the 'mystery' which is this: Why did the British government under Blair send out paid personnel to help Mr and Mrs McCann? One, the couple's spokesperson Clarence Mitchell, former Head of the government's Media Monitoring Unit, is still helping to obstruct the course of justice by spin and obfuscation. He is now being paid £70,000 a year for his efforts by double glazing multi-millionaire Brian Kennedy. Why did Gordon Brown, who had ample opportunity to rescind Blair's thoughtfulness towards the McCanns, not do so? On the contrary, he put himself out considerably to help the McCanns with long phone calls, arranging meetings for them with our Home Secretary Jacqui Smith (the one who is scared to go out on the streets at night) and with David Miliband the Foreign Secretary. It was only after the couple were made suspects by the Portuguese police that Mr. Brown drew back a little and refused them the high level meeting they wanted when they fled from Portugal back to the UK in September.
Nonetheless Brown is generally thought to have leaned quite hard on the Portuguese Prime Minister Mr. Socrates at the time of the Lisbon Summit last November – to perhaps go easy on the couple...to obfuscate a little, give the Brits time to...well, time to what? After this visit to Portugal by Mr. Brown in November, the British press were even more vociferous in their support of the pair calling the Portuguese police variously “Keystone cops”, “Blundering”; “Sardine Munchers” and a lot of other choice names. This despite the compelling forensic evidence gathered by the Portuguese and British police and important phone interceptions, which they claimed, on 4th August last year, had given them the evidence that Madeleine was dead.
Why has our government gone out on a limb to help the McCanns? It is unprecedented. Why have UK newspapers not only vociferously supported the McCanns but also viciously attacked the Portuguese police and our oldest ally Portugal itself?
I can only think of one reason for each of these questions. I think the government has a vested interest in helping the McCanns to hide the truth and the newspapers have a vested interest in keeping this story running at whatever cost to the integrity of journalism and to our nation as a whole. To take the newspapers first. They no longer reflect opinion, they lead it. Remember the 'News of the World' in 2000 and its editor Rebekah Wade, when a mob of people in Portsmouth were whipped up, after the child Sarah Payne's murder? Ms.Wade had published photos and names of known sex offenders in the area. As a result two men facing sex offence charges committed suicide and the mob eventually stoned a pediatrician's home, knowing no better. In a country with an increasing number of people who don't or can't think for themselves or evaluate things and situations, it is easy to inflame and indeed, suppress opinion; to create action and more often, inaction. The media is now a weapon, and it is being used to control us. Newspapers are not now there to report news, they are there to make it. And this is the reason why the pro-McCann saga goes on and on. It suits the newspaper editors, it suits the government. And they're in this together.
Now why the government has stuck its neck out for this pair of nonentities is quite hard to determine. Is it perhaps because Gerry McCann is a Scotsman? Scotland has been flavour of the month for years now but more so now that Brown is in charge. Is it because Mr. McCann is on COMARE, an organisation which assesses the links between nuclear power and childhood cancer and Gordon Brown's brother is with EDF, the company charged with progressing the nuclear industry in Britain? Or is it because the couple are perceived to be middle-class? Yet here is the dichotomy: to be 'middle class' in the UK now is like declaring yourself a leper. The middle classes are reviled, denied, abused - leaving the country in droves for more welcoming climes; almost non-existent, so why should being middle-class help their case and bring them such comfort and support from government? After all, we're living in the age of the child, and they harmed a child, while on holiday in Portugal, by leaving her alone with her two siblings every night in a dark miserable apartment, in order that they could drink and dine with their friends. Most people would regard this, at least, as a punishable offence but the McCanns haven't been censured and they haven't been reviled by the media for their gross neglect or had their other two children removed as would surely have happened if they had been a 'normal' working-class couple.
So, assuming they are not being helped and protected because Gerry is Scottish or Kate is from Liverpool (which is well-known for producing very sensitive people), or that they are 'middle class' one wonders what is the reason? Perhaps a clue was given by a relative of the McCanns: “We've pulled in a few favours” he said. What favours, I wonder. And favours given to who by whom? Is the reason the government appears to be so keen to protect the McCanns and stall on the investigation because the McCanns may have some knowledge which might be damaging to someone in the upper echelons of power? We can only speculate what this might be in connection with their missing, presumed dead, little girl.
Isn't it also a little strange that Gerry McCann's first call after the disappearance of the child was not to the police but to his best mate from Glasgow University Alistair Clark (now Professor of Political Science & Research at Queens University, Belfast and Assessor of English Working Government). Mr. McCann's delayed reaction allowed the village of Praia de Luz and their friends to trample all over the apartment thus conveniently destroying the forensic evidence. After receiving McCann's call Clark then phoned the British Ambassador John Buck, and Sky News. Kirsty Wark of the BBC became involved then Jill Renwick (another media type) who knew John Brown (Gordon's brother) and finally the great man himself.
So, to the warning red light I mentioned. I see the McCann case as a catalyst. The British newspapers over the last nine months, especially, of course, the gutter press have sunk lower with their biased and abusive reporting of this saga than one could ever have imagined. He said: “The officers on the kidnap squad deal with hundreds of abductions a year, the vast majority of which are dealt with satisfactorily and competently. Its director, Francisco Marco, has also angered Mr and Mrs McCann with his public boasts that he was 'very close' to finding their daughter, and even that he hoped to return her to her family by Christmas. The couple's spokesman Clarence Mitchell insisted the agency were 'doing valuable work on the ground'. He confirmed the financial arrangements behind the six-month contract but insisted the £50,000-a-month from the fund was only used to cover 'legitimate operational costs'.
Mr Mitchell said: "The monthly fee for their services is about £8,000. The £50,000 is for legitimate operational costs - having people scattered around different countries, hiring vehicles, hiring property to stay in and hotel bills. A private operation like this does cost money in terms of seeking information. It is something that needs that sustained level of funding to work. Private investigations are not cheap. The fund contributes £50,000 a month of publicly donated money because it's money to help find her. We feel that's proper use of that money."
Metodo 3 has claimed to have up to 40 agents working on the case in up to six different countries, including Morocco, Portugal and Britain. It has been criticised for lavish spending, including moving its offices into one of the most prestigious streets in Barcelona in December.
But Mr Mitchell said the majority of the spending allowance went on travel, transport and accommodation for the teams of detectives. He said: "People think it's £50,000 going straight into Francisco Marco's pocket, and that it's paying for them to move into plush new offices. Nothing could be further from the truth. They have taken this case on because it gives them a certain profile and prestige, not because it's going to make them rich. That money is used purely for legitimate operational costs and the fund is invoiced in full, as they would be for any expenses claim, which is effectively what it is. Their expenses are paid by the fund."
Metodo 3's involvement in the Madeleine case has proved controversial. Five senior members of the firm, including Mr Marco, were arrested over a phone-tapping scandal in 1995 and accused of spying. The case was later dropped over claims of police entrapment, but they were also threatened with arrest in Portugal.
Under Portuguese law it is illegal for a private investigation to be carried out on a case that is being pursued by the police, and the agency was warned not to speak to police witnesses. But Jennifer Murat, the mother of the first named suspect Robert Murat, has accused its detectives of bribing witnesses to change their accounts and has said she fears they are working to frame her expat son.
Mr Mitchell's comments that Metodo 3 has spent money 'seeking information' will fuel speculation that the agency has paid individuals for evidence.
Meanwhile, the McCanns, both 39, were said to be 'encouraged' by reports that their status as official suspects in the case will be reviewed after their friends have been re-interviewed. Portugal's Attorney General Fernando Pinto Monteiro told the newspaper Expresso: "The couple's legal status will be considered at the appropriate moment, depending on various elements still to be obtained."
The newspaper reported that the McCanns would only remain as suspects if the new interrogations of their friends, the so-called Tapas Seven, revealed 'screaming contradictions'.

Als je de waarheid spreekt dan hoef je je statement niet te veranderen of bij te stellen, al die verklaringen van de tapas 7 zijn zo vaak gewisseld dat ze volgens mij zelf niet eens meer weten wat de laatste versie was, ik heb al eerder gezegd dat je dat alleen doet om iets te verbergen, of mooier voor te doen, de verhalen zijn duidelijk kloppend gemaakt met hetgeen de McCanns het beste uit komt.
Het ergste vind ik dat er blijkbaar mensen zijn die veel in de melk te brokkelen hebben die alles het liefst onder het tapijt zien geveegd worden en meegaan met Gerry en Kate, volgens mij niet zozeer om Maddy zelf maar om er voor te zorgen dat 'een van hen' niet in de problemen komt, wat er ook is gebeurd.

The case of Joana Cipriano highlights serious omissions on the part of authorities who failed to spot that the little girl was being exploited and neglected. According to a neighbour of the girl, Joana seemed unnaturally mature for her age. “She has a bearing and an attitude greatly beyond her years. Instead of playing with other children, she seems to spend her time taking care of her two little brothers.” Another neighbour described her as the “Cinderella” of the household, seen at all times of the day and night in the village, running errands for her family.
In September of 2004, Algarve knew another tragic history which evolved a child death. In the beginning, the mother, Leonor Cipriano started for presenting complaint in the GNR on the alleged disappearance of her daughter Joana of 8 years.
The PJ still investigated the presumption abduction, but this theory fast became false when the proper mother of the girl passed of complaining to suspicion.
After long inquiries, happened what was feared. João Cipriano, uncle of the girl and brother of Leonor, confessed to the PJ that he and his sister had spanked the girl until the death. Months later, added to his confession that had quartered the corpse. According to João, the body had been cut in three parts and kept in a refrigerating coffer, where the PJ found blood vestiges that corresponded to the girl. The brothers had gotten rid themselves of the body in the following days of the crime, but they didn’t say where they had hidden it.
Court hears Joana’s horror story
Onlookers in the public gallery screamed abuse at the mother and uncle of Joana Cipriano as they were ferried to and from court.
The case, which has shocked the nation with its account of incest, murder and desecration, took just three days to be tried. The Public Ministry has pressed for jail terms of 24 years for the defendants, who are charged with qualified murder, as well as desecrating and concealing a body.
Joana disappeared, presumed murdered, in the Algarve village of Figueira, near Portimão. She was last seen buying food from a nearby café on the evening of September 12 last year. Prosecutors charge that she came home to find her mother, 34-year-old Leonor Cipriano, and her uncle, 32-year-old João Cipriano, having sex. Fearful that Joana would relate the incident to her stepfather, they allege that the couple decided to kill her. The prosecution also said that the couple had repeatedly mistreated Joana, recounting that she was little more than a “servant” in her own household.
The court heard a catalogue of horrifying details, including an earlier video taped confession from Joana’s uncle in which he related the circumstances of his niece’s murder. This video testimony is now the subject of an appeal from the defence team who claim it should be excluded because the couple exercised their right to remain silent during the trial. In the taped confession, João Cipriano said he and his sister hit Joana who then banged her head against a wall before collapsing, unconscious, onto the floor. João Cipriano claimed that he had wanted to call an ambulance but that his sister prevented him, telling him instead to go to Joana’s stepfather and inform him that she had disappeared.
Mother had appealed for daughter’s return
Her mother made subsequent public appeals for her daughter’s safe return, claiming that she had been kidnapped. But authorities began to suspect the couple after villagers noted their allegedly offhand reaction to Joana’s disappearance. Local shopkeeper Nídia Rochato remembered that Leonor neither cried nor seemed unduly concerned. When she commented on this to her, Leonor reportedly replied that she believed that her daughter was still alive.
The absence of a corpse delayed the arraignment process but the Public Ministry were able to indict the couple following statements from neighbours. Investigators also gathered forensic evidence at the house where Joana lived with her mother, stepfather and two brothers.
A total of 45 witnesses, mostly relatives and villagers, testified in court between Wednesday and Friday of last week. Four jurors (one man and three women) and three judges will decide the verdict. The opinions of the jurors – a 20-year-old student, a physiotherapist, a library employee and a waitress – will carry the same weight as the judges.
Joana’s uncle had contempt for human life
Leonor and João Cipriano, who have been held on remand for over a year, stood silently and without emotion as they heard prosecutor José Pinheiro outline his case. He described João Cipriano as a man who “has contempt for human life, psychopathic tendencies and difficulty in controlling impulses”. Pinheiro also castigated Joana’s mother for her “emotional instability, insensitivity and disregard for other people’s needs”. Only when Pinheiro announced that he was pressing for a 24-year jail term for both defendants did Leonor show emotion, sobbing uncontrollably.
Pinheiro explained why his team was pressing for such a long sentence. “The defendants’ guilt is heightened by their cold and calculating behaviour after their child’s death, as well as the devious manoeuvres they adopted to conceal the crime,” he said.
The trial included key testimony from Joana’s stepfather, António Leandro, who related that Leonor had confided to him that she had had a sexual relationship with her brother. He also told the court that during this conversation, which took place a few days after Joana’s disappearance, at judicial police headquarters, Leonor had admitted that she and her brother had killed the little girl.
A key element of the prosecution’s case rests on the fact that the couple dismembered the girl’s corpse. António Leandro, confronted with photographs of tools allegedly used by the couple, said he recognised a saw he had kept at home. In the video taped confession, João Cipriano admitted that the body of the girl was dismembered and placed in a refrigerated trunk. A doctor involved in the case, Albino Santana dos Santos, conceded that body parts, matching the size of a girl of Joana’s height, could have been stuffed inside the trunk.
Defence team challenges evidence
Despite the evidence, João Grado, Leonor Cipriano’s lawyer, still pressed for her acquittal, describing the evidence as “miserable”. João Cipriano’s lawyer, Sara Rosado, reminded the court that Joana’s body had never been found and dismissed the prosecution’s version of events. “João Cipriano has an intelligence level considerably lower than the average. How is it possible that such a person could deceive everyone for so long?” she asked the court.
But prosecutors disagreed, describing the case as a “veritable horror story that proves that reality really does surpass fiction”. “Nobody can say that they wanted to kill her when they hit. But later when they persisted, they knew that she was going to die. Their guilt is absolute – the victim was a minor, the daughter and niece of the defendants,” they told the court.
The corpse of the girl never was found, but this fact didn’t hinder the PJ to continue with the inquiries, and in November of 2005 the court of Portimão condemned Leonor to twenty years and four months of arrest and João Cipriano to a penalty of nineteen years and two months.

What the report doesn’t say is the mother waited 2 days before she notified the police.
During that time she washed her house down with petrol.Blood was found in the freezer belonging to Joana which the mother claimed came from a nose bleed after she had given Joana a beating.
3 years later the brother has written a letter in which he claimed that Joana had been sold by her mother and was not dead.

Leoneor Ciprinao and his brother, who had a incestuous relationship, were both sentenced to 16 years in prison, for the killing of the child, Joana Cipriano.
They killed her, after she came back home earlier and found sister and brother (her mother and her uncle) having sexual relations. They cut the body in pieces, kept a few in the refrigerator, than burned and gave the remainings to the pigs, to eat . Samples of blood of the child, Joana Cipriano, were found inside her mother’s refrigerator.
Leonor Cipriano accused five officers of beating her. They were put on a police line-up and she didn’t recognize not even one of the alleged aggressors (including Chief-Inspector Gonçalo Amaral). The magistrate of the Public Prosecutor’s Office investigated the complaint of Leonor Cipriano against CID Chief-Inspector Gonçalo Amaral and the other five CID officers and decided to prosecute them, didn’t included in the accusation documents the results of the police line-up (which took place with Leonor Cipriano behind a two-way mirror…)
That magistrate is being sued by the Portuguese CID Officers union, and has a complaint with the Conselho Superior da Magistratura (”High Magistrates Council”) the body in charge of nominating and disciplining judges and magistrates from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Update: the trial of the officers who supposedly beaten up Leonor Cipriano started today 11th of February in the Court of Portimão.

Earlier, the minister had guaranteed to the MP's in the Parliamentary Comission for Constitutional Matters that the comment from the PJ's top official had not affected "the superior course of the process" and that he has no indication that there may have been a "violation of the judicial secrecy".
Aguiar Branco, an MP from PSD, criticised that the Minister of Justice and communist MP Antonio Filipe - who dismissed the initiative from CDS/PP as "noise" - had diminished the value of Alipio Ribeiro's statements. "We are playing with fire. There is an ongoing dismissal of the statements that are made by judicial agents within this Commission", the former Justice Minister said, also referring to the parliamentary audition of the Public Prosecutor, Pinto Ribeiro, about his statements concerning phone tapping.
Like Helena Pinto, from Bloco de Esquerda, Aguiar Branco considered that the minister only gave "procedural justifications". "This is not a technical issue. The problem is one of political management of the situation", Aguiar Branco said, questioning whether the minister considered that Alipio Ribeiro's words were "innocuous".
The social-democrat MP insisted that this is "a problem of institutional trust", and that it was necessary to "draw political consequences from the statements".Nuno Melo also criticised the alleged attempt to dismiss Alipio Ribeiro's statements, mentioning that those "had consequences on the credibility of Justice" and "external and internal" repercussions on the image of criminal investigation and of the country itself."

Die nieuwe poster-campagne (Bron) wordt ondersteund/gemaakt door die engerds van Helping To Find Madeleine support group, een doorgeslagen. naar mijn mening, cultgroep cq sekte. Ik heb daar eerder over gepost, brrr...een soort van recruteringsclub met een devotie voor de McCanns die geenszins 'fris' is te noemen, integendeel, jasses!
Dat is idd een zacht gezegd een vreemd groepje, het zou me niets verbazen als de loge van Gerry van de vrijmetselaars daar een grote vinger in de pap heeft.

Surely by now, you must have realized that for a Country, who follows a secrecy law, they"re not going to put everything into plain old english just for us. Why should they anyway? The PJ should have been left alone to get on with their job, and the not so Honorable British Press should now leave them alone to do just that, and stop printing mis-interpretations, if they are not confident in what was actually said. If there is any more reporting then at least stick to the truth and if they dont know it dont print. I think we have all had it up to here with spin, and yesterday for me was the limit.
I have come to the point where, I now hope that the Portuguese are leading you all up the garden path, until they are ready to bring some conclusion, to what can only be described as a very complex case.You know that Martin. And what has been insinuated about the Portuguese people and their Judicial system, is disgraceful.
Bottom line Martin is that its starting to sound like no one can do anything better than we british. As for the story going off the boil, what story? there has never been any Investigative Journalistic story anyway. You all allowed yourselves to be guided by Clarence Mitchell. Well done. For the past several months there is no honour in being British.

Het gaat hier niet om de missing children in welk land dan ook, ik vind het ongepast dat die man zijn eigen straatje schoon wil vegen over de rug van die kinderen, feit is dat men er daar blijkbaar niet toe in staat is om een zaak op te lossen, deze zaak dan, daar staat verder alles los van in mijn ogen.
