Ajax heeft in gesprekken met Chelsea overeenstemming bereikt over de medewerking van Ajax aan de directe overgang van Henk ten Cate naar naar de Engelse club.
Vorige week verzocht Henk ten Cate, nadat hij persoonlijk door Chelsea was benaderd, de clubleiding van Ajax om met Chelsea in onderhandeling te treden. Na intern beraad is Ajax op dat verzoek ingegaan.

Het is nu aan Chelsea en Henk ten Cate om hun onderlinge contacten af te ronden en de overgang definitief te maken. Ajax verwacht dat dit niet lang op zich zal laten wachten.

HTC is re-de-lijk door de mand gevallen bij ajax, heeft in zijn periode als trainer daar niets bereikt, 1x beker, 2x jc fruitmand, en 2x CL voorronde misgelopen. Blaaskaak met 0.0 rendement.

Henk ten Cate, the man Avram Grant chose to work alongside Steve Clarke as his two assistant first team coaches, this week began work at Chelsea.

With Grant having expressed his desire to take a different direction in playing style while respecting the achievements of the recent past, he is looking to Ten Cate to play a big part in realising the aim through efforts on the training pitch.

For Ten Cate, it's a task he relishes, although he is preaching patience, first in his early days in the job, and on the road to the chosen goal.

He spoke to chelseafc.com ahead of his first game as a Chelsea coach, today at Middlesbrough.

You started coaching the players for the first time on Thursday?
No, I was just watching. And on Friday I was watching too. If you arrive somewhere new, you have to learn about the players and the players have to learn about you. It is not a good thing to jump directly on their backs and say things you see. My job for the first couple of days is observing, analysing players' individual qualities and the qualities of the team and how to improve things.

What are your early impressions of the facilities at Cobham?
I don't think there is any team in the world with nicer facilities than this - in beautiful surroundings and luckily, since I arrived here, the weather has been fantastic. I hope this is a good omen.

Was it a tough decision to leave your last job and come here? Ajax is a big club and it must be special for someone Dutch to be in charge there?
Of course it was hard because I worked there with a group of very talented and very young players. The only problem with Ajax is you always lose your best players.

Two days before qualifying for the Champions League, I lost my two best players and the club ended up with a lot of money. It is kind of frustrating. The decision to leave was a big one but Chelsea and I met at the right moment. They needed someone and I wanted to move and everything came together and everybody is happy.

You must already know a lot about many of the Chelsea players having studied them hard every time we played Barcelona.
Not quite a lot but I watch international football of course and I know players, also before they were playing at Chelsea. It is nice to work with them and now you experience them close up, for some you have to think he is better than I thought and maybe another you think he is not as good as I thought. It is always the same if you work closely with people. You get to know the players technically and mentally as well as personally.

One player you definitely have good knowledge of is Juliano Belletti.
Of course. We were at Barcelona together for several years and Bell is a fantastic player and a good guy. He is a very modern right-back with a lot of offensive qualities - I think more than defensive - but then he is a Brazilian. It is something all Brazilians have. Going forward is their favourite business. This team needs a player like him to become a little more adventurous.

Will you have to adapt your coaching methods to fit with Barclays Premier League football?
I think so because every league is different. There is only one thing that is the same, the players. Players are the same in every league in every country. The thing to do is for Avram, me and Steve to look at their qualities and try to find a way for them to play where their qualities fit best. That is the most important thing for coaches to do. Look at what system will be best for their qualities to come out on top.

Most fans at any club would be excited about the idea of playing like Barcelona at their recent best. Do you think it possible to play the Barcelona way in the English league?
I think you can play a certain way of football that is very similar to Barcelona but you need the players for that - and Chelsea doesn't have Iniesta, doesn't have Deco, doesn't have Xavi which are players with a certain quality.

But Chelsea on the other hand has Essien and Makelele and Lampard - different players with different styles. But I think it is not the style of Barcelona players, it is the way they play that is attractive - and with Chelsea with all the players we have and all the quality we have, we can play attractive football that is fun to watch, with the intention of winning the game, not with the intention of not losing the game.

I think this change in attitude is huge. It is bigger than everyone imagines. You enter the field with it in the back of your mind that today we are not going to lose, or you enter and you say I am going to win today. And we have to work on that.

It will cost a lot of energy and effort working on the training ground, trying to convince the players there is also another way of playing football that is fun to do and which pleases the crowd. This has to go step-by-step. You cannot go for a miracle change, it is impossible. We are a big football club and we need results along the way and you have to do it step-by-step.

Have you been involved in a similar change at any previous club?
Yes, we did it with Barcelona and the first half-year was not really a success. But the people kept confidence in our work because they were seeing things improving and at the end of the season, we ended second. The next two years we won all the prizes to win in Spain and the Champions League which was a great result of course. But you need to be patient. You cannot do it in one year or one-and-a-half years. You have to work on this.

JOHN TERRY and Chelsea coach Henk ten Cate had to be pulled apart by stunned Blues players after a furious training ground bust-up. The ugly confrontation — just 24 hours before Chelsea’s Carling Cup final defeat by Tottenham — was watched by shocked owner Roman Abramovich.

Eye witnesses saw Ten Cate aggressively face up to skipper Terry during Saturday’s session. he pair went head to head, hurling a tirade of swear words and insults as players dived in to separate them.

I understand Terry had not been told whether he would be in the team to face Spurs and feared he might lose out. He was so incensed by the bust-up he refused to accept Ten Cate’s offer of an apology.

One witness told SunSport: “The session was supposed to put the finishing touches to the final plans for Wembley — but it just descended into a massive row. “All the players have become exasperated by the shambolic nature of some of the recent training sessions. “And there was a lot of unrest among the squad because no one knew what the team was going to be for Wembley.

“Everyone was trying to guess what was going on and in the end the frustration became too much. But the intensity of the row took everyone by surprise. “John and Ten Cate were right in each other’s faces and when it became clear that neither was going to back down, other players jumped between them to pull them apart. “To make matters worse, Mr Abramovich was visiting the training ground and saw the whole thing.”

It is not the first time Dutchman Ten Cate has ruffled a few feathers with his abrasive nature since being appointed assistant first-team coach last October.

ROTTERDAM/LONDEN - De druk op Henk ten Cate neemt toe bij Chelsea. De Engelse tabloids pakten gisteren groot uit met verhalen over een ordinaire ruzie tussen de coach en aanvoerder John Terry.

Chelsea-eigenaar Roman Abramovich zag het voor zijn neus gebeuren en dacht er het zijne van. Abramovich kwam zaterdagmiddag hoogstpersoonlijk checken hoe zijn Chelsea ervoor stond, daags voor de League Cup-finale tegen Tottenham Hotspur (2-1 verlies).

Net toen de Russische miljardair en zijn gevolg weer wilden vertrekken van het trainingscomplex in Cobham, ontplofte op het veld een figuurlijke bom.

Briesend stonden Henk ten Cate en John Terry opeens tegenover elkaar, als twee stieren in een arena. Volgens de Engelse sensatiepers werd een handgemeen ternauwernood voorkomen door de spelers en stafleden van Chelsea.

Zowel tabloid The Sun als concurrent Daily Mirror verhalen uitgebreid en gedetailleerd over het voorval. Manager Avram Grant zou de training direct stil hebben gelegd en de twee kemphanen tot de orde hebben geroepen. Toen Ten Cate later werd opgedragen zijn excuses aan te bieden, zou Terry geweigerd hebben de vrede te tekenen.

Opgeblazen of niet, ook in een breder verband is het incident interessant. Een ruzie met Terry leidde in september nog tot een versneld vertrek van de Portugese manager José Mourinho, die ‘de grip op de kleedkamer’ kwijt zou zijn.

Het is geen geheim dat Terry en zijn ploeggenoot Frank Lampard de hiërarchie bepalen bij Chelsea. Het duo behoort tot het meubilair van de club en is immens populair bij de aanhang van the Blues.

De botsing tussen aanvoerder Terry en first team coach Ten Cate stelt de Londense clubleiding dan ook voor een lastig probleem. Eigenaar Abramovich voerde in oktober persoonlijk de eerste gesprekken met de Amsterdammer en maakte zich intern hard voor de komst van de toenmalige Ajax-trainer. Ten Cate moest de Israëlische manager Grant gaan assisteren, vooral in het coach- en veldwerk. Op papier zag dat er logisch uit, maar in de praktijk loopt het niet vlekkeloos.

Al snel na de komst van Ten Cate lekten diverse Chelsea-spelers hun onvrede naar de Engelse pers. De Nederlander zou zich arrogant en schreeuwerig gedragen op het trainingsveld en die houding wekte irritatie bij een aantal vedetten. Rond het incident van zaterdag voerde The Sun een anonieme ‘ooggetuige’ op, die geen goed woord over had voor de werkwijze van Ten Cate.


,,Alle spelers zijn de schandelijke sfeer rond de trainingssessies van de laatste tijd meer dan zat,’’ klinkt het onder meer. De Daily Mirror komt met vergelijkbare quotes, volgens Brits gebruik eveneens van een anonieme bron. Ten Cate zelf mag van zijn werkgever officieel niet met de Engelse pers praten. Slechts Grant en diens andere assistent Steve Clarke voeren naar buiten toe het woord.

In het huidige machtsspel pleit voor Ten Cate dat hij min of meer door Abramovich is gehaald. De Russische eigenaar heeft bij alle beleidsbeslissingen het laatste woord en zal geen gezichtsverlies willen lijden. Insiders bij Chelsea suggereren daarom dat Ten Cate zo onopvallend mogelijk naar de achtergrond moet worden gemanoeuvreerd.

De bij de spelers geliefde assistent-coach Steve Clarke zou in dat geval meer zeggenschap moeten krijgen, zowel op het trainingsveld als rond wedstrijden.


Het is niet de eerste keer dat het explosieve karakter van Ten Cate onderwerp is van gesprek. De Amsterdammer presteerde bij het merendeel van zijn clubs uitstekend, maar stond ook garant voor wrevel en incidenten. ,,Ik heb liever dat ze me een klootzak vinden, maar een goede coach, dan dat ze me zo’n aardige vent vinden,’’ zei hij daar zelf over.

Bij Ajax botste Ten Cate frontaal met Kenneth Perez, terwijl ook spelers als Klaas Jan Huntelaar en Thomas Vermaelen soms grote moeite hadden met het opvliegende karakter van hun coach. Bij Barcelona werd zijn werk in de schaduw van Frank Rijkaard uitgebreid geroemd. Onder anderen Ronaldinho en Edgar Davids spraken vol lof over Ten Cate.


Chelsea presteert dit seizoen wisselend. Het veldspel is aantrekkelijker dan in de tijd van Mourinho en de resultaten zijn meestal goed, maar de Londense ploeg staat vooralsnog slechts derde in het Premiership, achter Arsenal en Manchester United.
Het verlies in de League Cup-finale tegen Tottenham Hotspur kwam bovendien hard aan. ,,We kunnen twee dingen doen,’’ zei Terry daarover. ,,We kunnen blijven treuren over deze nederlaag, óf we rechten onze rug en zetten het recht in de Premier League, de FA Cup en de Champions League.’’

Ten Cate: Alles enorm opgeblazen

,,Het is geen toeval dat zo’n verhaal in een krant als The Sun opduikt,’’ reageert Henk ten Cate vanuit Engeland op de publicaties. ,,Dit is allemaal enorm opgeblazen, onzin. Ik kan het uitstekend vinden met John Terry en dat is wederzijds.’’

Ten Cate bevestigt wel dat er een stevige woordenwisseling plaatsvond op de zaterdagtraining tussen hemzelf en de aanvoerder van Chelsea.Van een bijna-handgemeen was volgens de trainer echter geen sprake.

,,We zijn allebei emotionele types, maar we respecteren elkaar ten volle,’’ aldus Ten Cate. ,,Zaterdag is de afstand tussen hem en mij nooit minder geweest dan een meter of vijf. Dat we met onze koppen tegen elkaar stonden, zoals werd geschreven, is dan ook onzin. De discussie ging over de felheid tijdens de training, zoals je dat wel vaker hebt. Dat hoort bij topvoetbal. Daarbij zijn vast woorden als ‘fuck’ gevallen, maar dat heb je in Engeland al vrij snel.’’

Ten Cate benadrukt dat de spanning groot was voor de League Cup-finale tegen Tottenham Hotspur op Wembley. ,,Bij Chelsea hebben we een selectie van 27 spelers en drie keepers,’’ aldus de coach. ,,Van hen mocht iets meer dan de helft mee naar de finale tegen Tottenham, dus dan snap je wel dat het er fel aan toegaat.

John vond dat er nóg fanatieker getraind moest worden, ik was het daar met het oog op de wedstrijd niet mee eens. Daar hadden we een woordenwisseling over. Dat was alles.’’

Chelsea verloor de finale tegen Tottenham Hotspur overigens met 2-1. Na 90 minuten stond er 1-1 op het bord. In de verlenging werd een fout van doelman Cech de ploeg van Ten Cate fataal.
