Ban hopes meeting will be good beginning point for parties concerned to find lasting solution on Western Sahara issue.


MADRID - UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday he had invited international powers to talks next week between Morocco and the separatist Polisario Front over the disputed Western Sahara territory.

"I have invited the two parties, and their neighbouring countries and the friends group including Spain, for the meeting to take place near New York City next week," he told a joint news conference in Madrid with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

The so-called Group of Friends of Western Sahara includes France, Britain, the United States and Russia in addition to Spain.

The meeting on June 18, aimed at negotiating a settlement on the status of the former Spanish colony of 260,000 people, will be the first direct talks between Morocco and Polisario in years.

A UN spokeswoman said Tuesday the two-day talks will bring together Morocco, the Polisario separatists who oppose Rabat's rule over Western Sahara, and neighbouring Algeria and Mauritania.

"I sincerely hope that the meeting in New York will be a good beginning point so that the parties concerned will be able to find a lasting solution on this issue," said Ban.

Morocco annexed the desolate northwest African territory after the withdrawal of Spain and neighbour Mauritania in the 1970s, settling it with around 300,000 Moroccans in 1975.

A war with the Polisario Front, which was backed by Algeria, ended in 1991 with a UN-brokered ceasefire.
