De zoektocht naar meer downforce heeft tijdens de testweek in Barcelona al enkele verrassende vondsten opgeleverd. Zo kwam het team van McLaren maandag de baan op met een opvallende boog op de voorvleugel. Bij Honda wordt op de vierde en laatste testdag geëxperimenteerd met twee bijzondere vleugels op de neus.

Deze nieuwe vleugels doen qua vorm nog het meest denken aan olifantenoren. De Oostenrijkse testcoureur Christian Klien zal deze nieuwe aërodynamische ontwikkeling vandaag (donderdag) voor het eerst uitproberen. Of dit bedenksel ook tot betere resultaten leidt, weten we pas na afloop van de vierde testdag.

SO HERE'S the news on Britain's drivers: Lewis Hamilton is now the next big thing; David Coulthard is still the nice guy, but no longer at the front; and Anthony Davidson is hanging around rather amiably at the back of the grid, earning praise but no points.

Oh, and there's Jenson Button. At least, he's somewhere around. But isn't he supposed to be up there at the sharp end, challenging for wins and justifying all those years of red-carpet appearances and glamorous girlfriends? So why's he trundling around at the back? The mighty, it seems, have fallen rather a long way.

Button's season has been an absolute disaster. The best you can say about it is that he hasn't actually got physically hurt although his pride must be bruised and his confidence staggering backwards. In the season opener in Melbourne, he finished in 15th position; he was then 12th in Sepang and subsequently crashed on the first lap in Bahrain. Three grands prix, no points, no top 10 finishes. Miserable.

At least Button has mitigation, because he can point to the fact that it's not all his fault. His car is a grotesque waste of money, for Honda have poured absolute fortunes into their Formula One team only to end up with a skip on wheels. Button is also no slower than his team-mate Rubens Barrichello, himself yet to finish a race in the top 10. They are the two unhappiest drivers in the sport.

Button has variously described his car as disappointing, bad, slow and, perhaps most astutely, rubbish. And remember, this is the car decorated with a map of the world and burdened with messages of environmental friendliness. There's no point hiding your disappointment and trying to look innocuous when you're driving a car with that sort of paint job.

It's really not that long since Button was the darling of British motor racing, seemingly anointed as the successor to Damon Hill as the country's next world champion. Yet we waited, and waited, and now he's raced well over 120 times and won only once. If there is champion potential in there, it's taking time to come out.

How galling for him, then, that Hamilton's appearance on the scene should come to the chorus of both acclaim and achievement. Three races, three podium positions, and a place at the head of the drivers' championship.

"What's it been like returning to the UK for the first time since leaving for Australia?", Hamilton was asked this week. "Great," came the answer. "People have been coming up to me and being extremely nice, saying congratulations, fantastic job. It is pleasing to see how many people I have made happy. It makes me happy that they are happy and it is quite a buzz."

Nice for Hamilton, horrible for Button. These are the quotes he should have been saying, the youthful popularity that was always expected to tumble on to his shoulders. He must feel like someone has stolen his destiny.

What he should do is fight like mad to either get into a top team, or shake Honda so much that they rebuild around him. It's time for tantrums, for brave words. But instead, through the intermediary of his manager Richard Goddard, we're told that Jenson's aim is basically to stay put and hope for the best. "Clearly, the team isn't where it should be," Goddard said, "but we're not going to jump ship. We're not shopping around and I'm not talking to anyone at the moment."

Perhaps this is code, or some subtle mind game, but it doesn't look like it. "There is no better place to be," Goddard went on to say. Perhaps it's irony. Button is in grave danger of being written off, and then forgotten. His reputation is no longer high, even if he can justifiably blame the car. In Formula One, there is an expectation that talented drivers will show their ability however much their car resembles a lorry.

When Fernando Alonso was lumbered with a Minardi, he looked a very decent driver; the belief is that if Button is as good as his image suggests, he should be able to wring a bit more out of this Honda. A harsh analysis perhaps, but it's what he faces. Is the reason he fancies staying at Honda, you have to wonder, because he already suspects there won't be a better offer out there?

As for Coulthard, three retirements in three races might look grim, yet his performance in Bahrain was notable, involving an entertaining charge from 21st position on the grid to seventh place on the track. He appears to think that his car is improving, and if he can generate some genuine enthusiasm and confidence, I think he could still put in some decent performances before the end of the season.

He may not win a race - in fact, it would be astonishing if he got anywhere near the front - but he's still a crafty and talented driver. Wins - no; points - yes; a trip to the podium - possible. His prospects don't look especially good , but they do seem a good deal better than Button's.

Fast Ferrari F1 Car Gets Even Faster

Bahrain grand prix winner Felipe Massa has enthused about the even quicker Ferrari single seater that he tested last week at Barcelona. The Maranello based team's 2007 car was already the pacesetter this year, but Brazilian Massa, 26, said a heavy update made a significant difference to the pace at the same venue for Sunday's Spanish grand prix.

"Before the update the F2007 was good enough," he is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport, "and we could prove it by already winning twice. But this (updated) car is even better. I hope that we can repeat our competitiveness of the test in the next race," Massa added.

Massa last week revealed that he thought the new package had taken five tenths off an average lap time, while some observers now estimate the advantage over McLaren to be a full second. Massa said: "I have a great car and am ready to win again."

He rubbished David Coulthard's lap record on the final day of last week's test by saying a Ferrari driver could "easily" have gone quicker if he had wanted.
"Coulthard's record?" La Gazzetta quotes Massa as saying. "It does not interest us."

He also commented on McLaren's radical new front wing, and confirmed that something equally as visually impressive will not crop up on the red cars in scrutineering later this week. "They attract a lot of attention with their wing but we have many innovations and our car is faster.

"I am sure McLaren will still be competitive but we hope to be in front," Massa said.
