Calciopoli probe enters phase two

More clubs could face a sporting tribunal this summer as the Italian Football Federation’s Calciopoli investigation was widened.

An initial probe by Francesco Saverio Borrelli was completed last week which led to Juventus, Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina – plus 26 individuals – being indicted for wrongdoing.

Now Borrelli’s investigating team have started phase two of their enquiry by hearing evidence from a number of other outfits in Italian Football.

Reggina, Siena, Empoli, Messina, Lecce and Serie B side Arezzo face questions in regard to a number of intercepted telephone calls made during the 2004-05 season.

None of those six clubs have been accused or charged with any wrongdoing.

Borrelli’s latest probe could be concluded in around 10 days time before he will then pass on his findings to the FIGC prosecuting team for their evaluation.

Any possible second trial would only take place after the first one has concluded, even if both must be completed before the start of the 2006-07 campaign in late August.

The Juventus, Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio trial will begin at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday, with a verdict pencilled in between July 7 and 9. The outcome of any appeals will be handed before July 20.

Should any clubs be found guilty of sporting fraud then they face a points deduction or even demotion to a lower Division.

Juventus, as a result of the intercepted phone calls of former director Luciano Moggi, seem to be the club at the greatest risk.

The Old Lady may reportedly be stripped of their last two Serie A titles and could even be sent into Serie C.

Individuals found guilty of any wrongdoing may be penalised with fines or lengthy suspensions from the game.

Real Madrid Presidential candidate Lorenzo Sanz has sensationally announced that he has agreed to sign Inter striker Adriano.

“I have reached a deal with [owner Massimo] Moratti to sign Adriano if I am re-elected as President of Real Madrid,” he told Radio Marca.

“We have agreed a swap deal for a couple of players with Inter. Two will arrive from the Nerazzurri, I’ll also sign a Portuguese player and an Englishman.

“I’m ready to present the contracts on Thursday to prove to people that we have obtained these results.”

Adriano has been linked with the Spanish giants for some time and may be on the verge of an Inter exit.

He didn’t enjoy a great 2005-06 where he struggled for goals, as well as having problems with boss Roberto Mancini and some teammates.

It now seems that an exit is on the cards if Sanz, who recently attempted to buy Parma Football Club, wins the race for the Real hotseat next month.

If Inter do opt to sacrifice Adriano then it is expected that they will subsequently agree terms with Fiorentina over the capture of Luca Toni.

The two clubs have started talks for the Italian international and a fee is likely to be agreed after the World Cup Finals.

At this stage, it is unclear which other Inter and Real players may be involved in the deal supposedly brokered by Moratti and Sanz.

There is the possibility that Raul or old-boy Ronaldo could arrive.

Fiorentina reportedly have an agreement for Ajax starlet Klaas Jan Huntelaar, but their bid for Cristian Zaccardo seems set for failure.

The forward impressed when Ajax took on Inter in the Champions League earlier this season and became the subject of the most expensive domestic transfer in Dutch history when Ajax paid £6.2m to Heerenveen for the 22-year-old in January.

He had been linked with Juventus and Palermo, but there are now rumours that Fiorentina have a deal already lined up for the Dutch sensation.

“I want to play in an attacking side, close to goal and preferably with wing attackers,” he told UEFA.com. He was in the provisional squad for Germany 2006, but Coach Marco Van Basten preferred to go for players with more experience.

Huntelaar made up for that snub, proving decisive in Holland’s triumph at the Under-21 European Championships in May with four goals, including two in the Final.

This would suggest Luca Toni is indeed on his way to Inter, as the Nerazzurri have repeatedly hinted the Italian international wants the move.

Fiorentina have just bought Brazilian Reginaldo from Treviso, but look set to loan him out to Atalanta, while Marco Di Loreto is of interest to Empoli.

The Viola made a bid for Palermo defender Zaccardo, though that would appear to be a dead end. “I haven’t spoken to Fiorentina in two weeks,” confirmed agent Francesco Romano. “I get the feeling Zaccardo will stay at Palermo for another season, especially considering Francesco Guidolin’s return to the bench, as there’s always been a strong bond between them.”

Internazionale en AS Roma plaatsen zich nu rechtstreeks voor CL en Chievo Verona en Palermo dienen zich nu te plaatsen door middel van de voorronde. Al moet ik het allemaal nog zien, had persoonlijk nooit verwacht dat er zó zwaar zou worden gestraft. Lazio moet natuurlijk in de Serie A blijven, met de straf voor Juventus heb ik niet zoveel problemen.

Fabio Capello heeft vanochtend zijn ontslag ingediend bij Juventus en lijkt hiermee de nieuwe trainer van Real Madrid te worden. De Italiaanse oefenmeester was door de nieuwe president van Real Madrid, Ramón Calderón, gekozen om zijn project op het veld te leiden.

Capello bevond zich dit weekend nog op vakantie in Marbella, Zuid-Spanje, en kort na de bekendmaking van het voorzitterschap van Calderón reisde de Italiaan af naar Turijn om zijn beslissing bekend te maken aan de bestuursleden van La Vecchia Signora.

Capello stond nog één seizoen onder contract bij Juventus en zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid deze week gepresenteerd worden door Real Madrid.

Juve face Serie C threat

Calciopoli prosecutor Stefano Palazzi has today called for Juventus to be relegated into Serie C1, as well as urging the sporting tribunal to condemn Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina to Serie B.

Palazzi made his formal requests at around midday where he pushed for all the clubs charged with sporting fraud to face stiff penalties.

As well as seeing Juve thrown into “a Division lower than Serie B”, Palazzi wants them to be stripped of their last two Serie A titles and start the new campaign with a six-point penalty.

He’s also asked for Lazio and Fiorentina to begin with a 15 point penalty in next season’s Second Division, where they could be joined by a Milan side who start on minus three points.

There are also now 25, and not 26, individuals on trial for sporting fraud – FIGC member Cosimo Maria Ferri was cleared of any wrongdoing last night – and Palazzi is pushing for lengthy bans and fines.

Former Juventus director general Luciano Moggi, the man at the centre of the scandal, could face a five-year ban from the game plus multiple fines of 5,000 Euros.

Palazzi has asked for the same length of punishment to be handed out to ex-Juve chief executive Antonio Giraudo, Lazio President Claudio Lotito, Milan official Leonardo Meani, plus Diego and Andrea Della Valle of Fiorentina.

Other notable individuals who may face similar consequences include former FIGC chief Franco Carraro, ex-refereeing designators Paolo Bergamo and Pierluigi Pairetto, and current referee Massimo De Santis.

Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani is facing the threat of a two-year stop, while promising referee Gianluca Paparesta could be sidelined for a year.

The trial began last Thursday but was adjourned until Monday even if nobody was questioned on its restart as the day was dominated by objections from defence lawyers.

All involved maintain their innocence.

The FIGC are hoping for a verdict, which may not be as stiff as Palazzi is pushing for, to be delivered by July 10.
