Calciopoli probe enters phase two

More clubs could face a sporting tribunal this summer as the Italian Football Federation’s Calciopoli investigation was widened.

An initial probe by Francesco Saverio Borrelli was completed last week which led to Juventus, Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina – plus 26 individuals – being indicted for wrongdoing.

Now Borrelli’s investigating team have started phase two of their enquiry by hearing evidence from a number of other outfits in Italian Football.

Reggina, Siena, Empoli, Messina, Lecce and Serie B side Arezzo face questions in regard to a number of intercepted telephone calls made during the 2004-05 season.

None of those six clubs have been accused or charged with any wrongdoing.

Borrelli’s latest probe could be concluded in around 10 days time before he will then pass on his findings to the FIGC prosecuting team for their evaluation.

Any possible second trial would only take place after the first one has concluded, even if both must be completed before the start of the 2006-07 campaign in late August.

The Juventus, Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio trial will begin at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday, with a verdict pencilled in between July 7 and 9. The outcome of any appeals will be handed before July 20.

Should any clubs be found guilty of sporting fraud then they face a points deduction or even demotion to a lower Division.

Juventus, as a result of the intercepted phone calls of former director Luciano Moggi, seem to be the club at the greatest risk.

The Old Lady may reportedly be stripped of their last two Serie A titles and could even be sent into Serie C.

Individuals found guilty of any wrongdoing may be penalised with fines or lengthy suspensions from the game.

Sanz: I have Adriano deal

Real Madrid Presidential candidate Lorenzo Sanz has sensationally announced that he has agreed to sign Inter striker Adriano.

“I have reached a deal with [owner Massimo] Moratti to sign Adriano if I am re-elected as President of Real Madrid,” he told Radio Marca.

“We have agreed a swap deal for a couple of players with Inter. Two will arrive from the Nerazzurri, I’ll also sign a Portuguese player and an Englishman.

“I’m ready to present the contracts on Thursday to prove to people that we have obtained these results.”

Adriano has been linked with the Spanish giants for some time and may be on the verge of an Inter exit.

He didn’t enjoy a great 2005-06 where he struggled for goals, as well as having problems with boss Roberto Mancini and some teammates.

It now seems that an exit is on the cards if Sanz, who recently attempted to buy Parma Football Club, wins the race for the Real hotseat next month.

If Inter do opt to sacrifice Adriano then it is expected that they will subsequently agree terms with Fiorentina over the capture of Luca Toni.

The two clubs have started talks for the Italian international and a fee is likely to be agreed after the World Cup Finals.

At this stage, it is unclear which other Inter and Real players may be involved in the deal supposedly brokered by Moratti and Sanz.

There is the possibility that Raul or old-boy Ronaldo could arrive.

Fiorentina in Huntelaar hunt

Fiorentina reportedly have an agreement for Ajax starlet Klaas Jan Huntelaar, but their bid for Cristian Zaccardo seems set for failure.

The forward impressed when Ajax took on Inter in the Champions League earlier this season and became the subject of the most expensive domestic transfer in Dutch history when Ajax paid £6.2m to Heerenveen for the 22-year-old in January.

He had been linked with Juventus and Palermo, but there are now rumours that Fiorentina have a deal already lined up for the Dutch sensation.

“I want to play in an attacking side, close to goal and preferably with wing attackers,” he told UEFA.com. He was in the provisional squad for Germany 2006, but Coach Marco Van Basten preferred to go for players with more experience.

Huntelaar made up for that snub, proving decisive in Holland’s triumph at the Under-21 European Championships in May with four goals, including two in the Final.

This would suggest Luca Toni is indeed on his way to Inter, as the Nerazzurri have repeatedly hinted the Italian international wants the move.

Fiorentina have just bought Brazilian Reginaldo from Treviso, but look set to loan him out to Atalanta, while Marco Di Loreto is of interest to Empoli.

The Viola made a bid for Palermo defender Zaccardo, though that would appear to be a dead end. “I haven’t spoken to Fiorentina in two weeks,” confirmed agent Francesco Romano. “I get the feeling Zaccardo will stay at Palermo for another season, especially considering Francesco Guidolin’s return to the bench, as there’s always been a strong bond between them.”
