Soton heeft met Burley wel een goede manager. Rasiak is ook een uitstekende spits op dit niveau, maar de rest van het team is niet bijster sterk.

Bij Sunderland zal alles afhangen van de nieuwe manager. Als Niall Quinn en zijn groep de club overnemen en erin slagen Martin O'Neill als manager aan te stellen is dat voor mij dé favoriet.

Argyle agree fee for Dutch star

Plymouth Argyle boss Ian Holloway has revealed he has agreed an undisclosed fee with Belgian side Cercle Bruges for striker Ibad Muhamadu.

The Dutchman, 24, first appeared for Argyle on last the pre-season tour of Austria and was used as a half-time replacement in the 2-0 win over Yeovil.

Holloway said: "I had to agree a fee to get Ibad here and I've got to sit down with everybody and sort something out.

"I thought he was bright and you can tell he has played at a higher level.

Aston Villa have told Niall Quinn that he will get an answer on Kevin Phillips next week.

Quinn wants to bring Phillips back to the Stadium of Light and has asked Martin O'Neill, the new Villa boss, if he is prepared to let the striker go.

O'Neill, who took over at Villa Park two weeks ago, is taking stock of his players before he begins to shape his squad for the new season.

The Sunderland manager said: "We are led to believe from Aston Villa that we'll get a decision about Kevin's future on Monday. There could be a bit of movement, not in time for tomorrow's game, but we're working every so hard."

Meanwhile, another of Quinn's targets Andy Reid looks set to stay at Tottenham.

The Black Cats boss has revealed that his latest bid for the Republic of Ireland winger has been turned down by the north London club.

Quinn said: "I'll be quite honest, we put in an excessive bid for Andy Reid, we upped it a couple of times, and at this moment in time we're getting no joy from Spurs, so we've got to get on with it. We may have news on Monday about a similar type of player."

Quinn is scouring the transfer market in search of new players.

He said: "I won't just panic buy for the sake of it, I will only bring in players if they are better than those we already have here."

Niall Quinn hoopt heel snel een nieuwe coach aan te stellen bij Sunderland. De voorzitter had zichzelf aan het begin van dit seizoen verrassend benoemd als manager, en dat bleek een verkeerde zet.

Zo verloor de uit het Premiership gedegradeerde club de eerste vier competitieduels in het Championship, met de laatste plaats als gevolg. En dinsdag leed Quinn zijn vijfde nederlaag op rij, nota bene tegen Bury (2-0) in de League Cup. Bury is de puntloze hekkensluiter van de League Two, het vierde profniveau in Engeland.

'Ik had deze taak op me genomen omdat we niet de manager konden krijgen met de kwaliteiten die we wilden', legt Quinn uit op de website van Sunderland. 'Nu komen we er dicht bij in de buurt. We zijn een manager op het spoor. Ik kan nog niet zeggen wie, omdat er nog niets rond is.'

Maandag hoopt Quinn een nieuwe trainer op de bank te hebben zitten als The Black Cats West Bromwich Albion ontvangen. 'Ik denk dat ik waarschijnlijk niet meer de leiding zal hebben als we tegen West Brom spelen. Ik hoop in de komende dagen beter nieuws te hebben. En ik zal dan zo snel mogelijk terugkeren in mijn rol als voorzitter.'

Yorke made his name with Aston Villa before joining Man Utd in 1998
Championship outfit Sunderland have signed Dwight Yorke from Sydney FC in a £200,000 deal.

Yorke, 34, has agreed a two-year deal with the Black Cats to become manager Roy Keane's first signing.

The Trinidad and Tobago international has scored 189 goals with five clubs and 15 goals for the national team.

Yorke had a spell with Birmingham before captaining Sydney to the inaugural A-League title this year and played at the World Cup.

Sydney manager and former England captain Terry Butcher was keen to keep hold of the player who made his name with Aston Villa before earning a £12.6m move to Old Trafford.

But ex-Sunderland boss Butcher admitted Yorke was still keen to prove he could do it "on the biggest stage".

He told the club's website: "It's sad to see Dwight leave. He is a great player and a tremendous personality to have in the team and he has worked very hard since I came to Sydney to be in shape to play.

"He has great respect amongst the players and coaching staff and he will be missed."

Yorke did not travel with his team-mates to Melbourne on Thursday and remained in Sydney in case he was needed for a medical or to sign relevant paperwork.

Sydney FC chairman Walter Bugno added: "Dwight Yorke has made an unbelievable contribution to Sydney FC and Australian football and we wish him nothing but luck in his new endeavours with Sunderland."

Roy Keane heeft zich direct laten gelden als coach van Sunderland. De sinds dinsdag werkzame manager haalde donderdag liefst zes spelers naar The Black Cats.

Zijn dolle donderdag begon met de komst van Dwight Yorke, waarmee hij nog bij Manchester United speelde. De 34-jarige international van Trinidad en Tobago is afkomstig van Sydney FC, waarvoor hij een jaar speelde.

Na Yorke arriveerden nog vijf spelers. Middenvelder Liam Miller (Manchester United), spits David Connolly en middenvelder Graham Kavanagh (beiden Wigan Athletic) en vleugelspeler Ross Wallace en verdediger Stanislav Varga (beiden Celtic).

Opvallend genoeg zijn alle spellers bekenden voor Keane. Miller kent hij van zijn tijd bij Man United en via de Ierse nationale ploeg. Dat laatste geldt ook voor Connolly en Kavanagh. Wallace en Varga leerde hij kennen tijdens zijn laatste maanden als speler bij Celtic.

Keane moet Sunderland naar de top van het Championship stuwen na een dramatische seizoenstart van de club, die vorig jaar nog uitkwam in het Premiership. Met drie punten uit vijf duels bezet Sunderland de voorlaatste plaats.

When striker David Connolly completed his move to the Stadium of Light at exactly 10.59pm on Thursday night to become the sixth player to sign for the Black Cats, it completed an unprecedented day of transfer dealings at the club.

SAFC officials worked around the clock to complete all six deals - and all just 72 hours after Roy Keane took the manager's job at the Stadium of Light.

What makes it all the more remarkable is the fact that just one transfer requires full medical reports - including an MRI scan that has to be carried out in a hospital - contract negotiations between the club and the player and fully completed and signed registration with the FA and the Football League - and that's after the two clubs have agreed a fee!

SAFC Head of Medicine Pete Friar explains: "Medical screening includes the club doctor taking general health markers such as blood pressure, ECG readings and general health analysis. Medical history is taken at this point, including any family history of problems.

"Orthopaedic screening involves the physiotherapist taking an injury history and giving a very thorough physical examination of the player's posture, postural control, joints, muscles and spine.

"Particular areas of concern may be identified during the previous injury history and focal screening may occur whereby if a player has a problem of particular concern an orthopaedic consultant may become part of the medical screening process, but this is only happens on rare occasions.

"The work for a day like yesterday begins very much in advance, with MRI slots booked to scan players in advance of their arrival in Sunderland.

"Yesterday was an extraordinary day with a number of players due for medicals, but with their actual arrival times in Sunderland somewhat vague.

"At this point we must thank the Sunderland Royal Infirmary and Consultant Radiologist Terry Featherstone and the Newcastle Nuffield and their staff for their sterling efforts and patience in what was a very difficult day for them as well."

Given the technicalities involved, it's no surprise that there were one or two delays and doubts along the way…

Sunderland hurriedly arranged for David Connolly to drop off at Darlington Memorial Hospital at 7.15pm, on his way up the A1, to undergo a short-notice MRI scan in a desperate bid to speed up his medical.

Dwight Yorke, meanwhile, was repeatedly woken up in his Sydney apartment as the paperwork was completed (they are 11 hours ahead in Sydney).

The five other new signings formed an orderly queue - literally - at the Academy of Light training ground as they waited between 7.56pm and 10.59pm to complete their moves.

The whole day was an impressive feat of complicated and at times frustrating manoeuvring any plate-spinner would have been proud of.

Here's how the developments unfolded:

9am: Celtic pair Stanislav Varga and Ross Wallace arrive at the Academy of Light to begin medicals.

12noon: Scheduled MRI scans for Varga and Wallace are postponed due to emergencies.

2.30pm: Varga and Wallace eventually begin MRI scans at Sunderland Royal.

3.30pm: Graham Kavanagh and Liam Miller land at Teesside Airport after leaving the Republic of Ireland squad in Germany. Kavanagh meets Pete Friar at Newcastle Nuffield for an MRI and Miller meets Dr Gough (the club doctor) at the Academy to begin a medical.

4pm: Varga and Wallace complete MRIs and return to the Academy.

4.15pm: Miller completes his medical and leaves the Academy for Newcastle Nuffield to undergo an MRI.

4.45pm: Kavanagh completes his MRI and arrives at the Academy to begin a medical.

5.45pm: Miller returns to the Academy to conclude his contract negotiations.

While the medical staff await the results of the MRIs on Kavanagh, Miller, Varga and Wallace, the club receives medical reports on Dwight Yorke - including injury and medical history - which has been carried out in Australia, they are positive.

6.45pm: Despite earlier inaccurate reports, Sunderland eventually complete the signing of Yorke, at 5.45am Sydney time.

7.15pm: Due to the increasing difficulty in booking MRI slots, Connolly stops off at Darlington Memorial Hospital for his MRI, en-route to Sunderland.

8pm: Kavanagh signs a three-year contract before jumping on a flight back to Germany to prepare for Ireland's Euro 2008 qualifier.

8.45pm: Connolly arrives at the Academy to undergo a medical.

9pm: Wallace and Varga sign.

10.25pm: Miller joins on a free transfer from Manchester United before joining Kavanagh on the flight back to Germany.

11pm: Connolly completes his transfer.
