Arsenal lead race for £10m teenager Walcott

ARSENAL are hopeful that they have scored a significant victory over Chelsea by capturing Theo Walcott, the 16-year-old forward rated the best for his age in the country. The Southampton player could eventually cost as much as £10 million if he fulfils his potential, although only half of that fee is likely to be paid up front, with the rest based on appearances Walcott’s stunning performances at St Mary’s this season have attracted interest from all of the Barclays Premiership’s leading clubs, but, despite Chelsea’s greater riches, the player himself is understood to believe that he will have the best chance of developing into a first-team regular at Highbury under Arsène Wenger.
David Dein, the Arsenal vice-chairman, is believed to have held talks with Rupert Lowe, the Southampton chairman, yesterday and a deal could be concluded as quickly as today to follow the signing of Vassiriki Abou Diaby on a four-year contract from Auxerre. The 20-year-old midfield player, whose style resembles that of Patrick Vieira, was part of the France side who defeated England in the European Under-19 Championship in the summer. The fee is believed to be £3 million, rising to £6 million.
Walcott, who is still on scholarship wages of less than £100 per week and cannot command a transfer fee as he has not yet signed professional forms, could be loaned back to the Coca-Cola Championship club for the rest of the season as part of the deal. He will hope to emulate his hero, Thierry Henry, who has verbally pledged his future to Arsenal.
Southampton’s unhappiness at the prospect of losing such a prodigious talent will be softened by the realisation that Walcott, who has been at the club since the age of 11, could have left to join a rival academy, which would have forced them to try to negotiate a compensation deal. If the amount was fixed by a tribunal, it would almost certainly have been much less than the £10 million they are likely to receive.
Frighteningly quick on the ball and cool in front of goal — with five this season, including one in the 4-3 defeat of MK Dons in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, he is Southampton’s joint top scorer this season — Walcott became the youngest player in the club’s history when he made his debut on the opening day of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers, aged 16 years and 143 days.

Thierry Henry yesterday gave further indication that he wants to sign a new contract with Arsenal on the day that team-mate Ashley Cole pledged his future to the club.
France forward Henry and England left-back Cole have been the subject of interest from Spanish clubs, most notably Barcelona and Real Madrid. The much sought-after duo were at an event to mark this last season at Highbury yesterday when they stated their desire to play at the club's new stadium next season.
Henry will soon start talks about a new contract and gave the Arsenal board cause for optimism when he stated he wanted to lead the club into their Emirates ground as captain. "That is my aim," the Arsenal captain said, "but only if the boss still wants me to wear the armband."
Henry was, therefore, delighted to hear that Cole also believed his ambitions could be fulfilled at Arsenal. Cole, who is said to be a summer target for Spanish side Real Madrid, has been out of action since he cracked a metatarsal in his right foot playing for England at the beginning of October.
Cole is back in training and hopes to play a reserve game at Leicester next Tuesday before making a first-team return within a fortnight, news that is good for club and country.
Henry is convinced that Cole's return can also help Arsenal leave Highbury on a winning note. He said: "We have missed Ashley badly and I know when he comes back he will add a lot to the team and it is crucial that we can get him back on track from injury. I know clubs often say they have a lot of injuries, but we have had a lot and it will be great to see Ashley Cole back."
With Arsenal 24 points behind champions Chelsea, even the positive Henry admits the Premiership is probably beyond reach, but he still plans to add to the trophy cabinet before they end their 93-year stay at Highbury.
He added: "It is very important to leave on a winning note. Obviously the League is going to be a massive task, but we are still in the Carling Cup, the FA Cup and we have an important game to come against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
''So there is still some stuff to look forward to and some chances to win some silverware for Highbury. It will be the cherry on the cake to finish like that, although I don't like to project. But I can assure our fans that we are going to try our best to bring something back.
''It will be extra-special for our history and the fans if we do win something in our last season at Highbury. If we win the Champions League that will be a thousand cherries on the cake, but first we have to go back to basics."
That is why Henry sees the return of a key player such as Cole as so crucial to making Arsenal more solid for the remainder of the season. It is said that Madrid will test Cole and Arsenal's resolve with a bid before or after the World Cup, but Cole, insisted: "I've got three years left and I'm looking forward to playing in the new stadium.
"But I have to get fit and that is my main aspiration at the moment, so I can win things with Arsenal. It's getting better. I've got a couple of weeks training left and it has been a hard three months for me trying to get fit, but now I am on the verge of it and I'm looking forward to playing.
"I've only played eight games [this season] so I feel fresh and if I stay fit and don't have any setbacks I'll be looking forward to the World Cup, too.
''I have to prove I can still improve and that I am not the finished article. As a player you want to be the best. I've got a long way to go and I'm looking forward to trying to make it there."

Daarom vraag ik me af of het verstandig is om zoveel geld uit te geven aan een speler die misschien wel heel erg goed kan worden. Hij is nog echt erg jong en je weet nooit hoe hij zich gaat ontwikkelen. CHELSEA have matched Arsenal’s £10million bid for Southampton wonderkid Theo Walcott.
The Gunners are confident they have persuaded Walcott, 16, to sign for them in a deal where £5m would be paid up front and the rest of the fee based on first-team appearances.
But Chelsea believe they can persuade Saints with a straight cash deal and remain determined to snatch Walcott from under the noses of their bitter rivals.
Yet Arsenal striker Thierry Henry could be key to swaying Walcott’s decision as the teenager has revealed the Frenchman is his idol.
And Henry admits he has been impressed after watching the youngster in action.

Walcott has chosen Arsenal over Chelsea and BBC Sport understands the clubs are now working on the small print of a £12.5m deal.
Lawyers from both clubs are believed to be working on the contracts and Walcott could travel to Highbury for a medical on Thursday.
If Walcott, 16, passes his medical, his moved could be completed on Friday.
Walcott cannot technically sign a professional contract with Gunners until his 17th birthday on 16 March.

Bij Pennant bestonden al wel twijfels toen ze hem voor zoveel geld aantrokken, bij Walcott is dat wat minder het geval volgens mij.
