Monaco president Michel Pastor said the player, who has fallen out of favour after repeatedly missing training, would never play for the club again.

"He has qualities that we don't have in the side. He is tall, good in the air and makes good runs," Wenger said.

"He is a bit of a Kanu type but he goes in more behind the defenders."

Pastor said he would be pleased to see Adebayor leave the club.

"It would be good news for us and for him. The sooner he leaves, the better," he said.

Adebayor becomes Arsenal's second capture in the current transfer window after Arsene Wenger also completed the signing of Vasiriki Abou Diaby.

The Gunners will pay an undisclosed fee to the Principality club after signing the African on a "long-term contract".

Adebayor led his country to their first World Cup finals after top-scoring in the African zone.

CHELSEA have matched Arsenal’s £10million bid for Southampton wonderkid Theo Walcott.

The Gunners are confident they have persuaded Walcott, 16, to sign for them in a deal where £5m would be paid up front and the rest of the fee based on first-team appearances.

But Chelsea believe they can persuade Saints with a straight cash deal and remain determined to snatch Walcott from under the noses of their bitter rivals.

Yet Arsenal striker Thierry Henry could be key to swaying Walcott’s decision as the teenager has revealed the Frenchman is his idol.

And Henry admits he has been impressed after watching the youngster in action.

The Highbury legend, 28, said: “There are a lot of teams trying to get him but if he can join us then I would welcome him here and hope he would be a benefit.

“People are saying there are similarities and it’s good to hear what he said about me.”

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe is trying to talk up the interest of a third club but Tottenham, who have been monitoring the situation, are no longer in the running.

Arsenal set to seal Walcott deal

Arsenal are close to completing their swoop for Southampton's highly-rated youngster Theo Walcott.

Walcott has chosen Arsenal over Chelsea and BBC Sport understands the clubs are now working on the small print of a £12.5m deal.

Lawyers from both clubs are believed to be working on the contracts and Walcott could travel to Highbury for a medical on Thursday.

If Walcott, 16, passes his medical, his moved could be completed on Friday.

Walcott cannot technically sign a professional contract with Gunners until his 17th birthday on 16 March.

As Southampton are a plc, they are obliged to inform the Stock Exchange when the deal has been completed.

BBC Sport also understands that once Walcott's transfer is complete, it is unlikely he will be loaned back to Southampton for the rest of the season.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is concerned the 16-year-old would play too many games for Saints in the Championship.

But with Southampton's play-off hopes fading, boss George Burley is believed to favour making a clean break and not including Walcott in his re-building plans.

Walcott and his family have decided he can best achieve his potential at Arsenal, despite Chelsea being prepared to outbid the Gunners for the precocious teenager.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a big admirer and let slip at the weekend that a deal was almost done.

Referring to new arrivals Emmanuel Abedayor and Abo Diaby, he said Arsenal had signed "three players" but then changed that to "two-and-a-half".

Asked if he was referring to Walcott, the Arsenal manager said: "I would like to tell you."

BBC Sport revealed on Friday that Arsenal would be coming in with a big bid for Walcott, prompting Wenger to admit later that day that he was an admirer of the teenager's precocious talent.
