Een film is een visueel verhaal. Camerawerk en fotografie zijn ongelofelijk belangrijk, maar briljante special effects zonder goed verhaal is geen goede film. Elke studio kan 100 miljoen uitgeven, Bruce Willis huren en een paar gebouwen opblazen, maar voor drie tientjes een verassend en sterk verhaal vertellen is een zeldzame kwaliteit. En dat dient beloont te worden.
En als een film visueel prachtig (fabuleux) is en een goed verhaal (un destin incinérant) heeft dan is het feest compleet!

Cidade de Deus kan ik niet over oordelen want die heb ik nog nooit gezien.

Het is ook niet helemaal mijn ding, maar juist de dingen die jij zo belangrijk vind onderschieden deze film van een Stallone of Schwarznegger. Camerawerk en acteerwerk dus o.a....

Gladiator is ook een redelijk goede combi van verhaal en visuals, maar enigszins voorspelbaar en de effects zijn zoals te verwachten (in vergelijking, het kleurgebruik in amelie is veel orgineler, het verhaal van oldboy veel duisterder en verassender). TlotR is leuk, maar gehyped en vooral indrukwekkend vanwege de omvang van het project, niet vanwege de uiteindelijke uitwerking. De credits voor het verhaal gaan naar Tolkien en visueel gezien zijn alleen de CGI en photography echt goed. Je doet net of alleen Amerikaanse films de elementen hebben die je noemt. Heb je Hero of House of Flying Daggers gezien? Daar kan toch geen amerikaanse cinematograaf tegenop? De soundtrack van Amélie is ook veel beter dan de gemiddelde Hollywood-soundtrack.
Het is eerder zo dat jij bij voorbaat buitenlandse produkties uitsluit dan dat de rest van het forum dat doet met Hollywoodprodukties.

Sorry maar imho komt het acteerwerk, opdat van Sir McKelllen na dan (en zelf dat is onder de man's niveau), in de LOTR films niet in de buurt van Tatou in Amelie, Bill Murray in LiT, Carrey in ESOTSM, Ganz in de Untergang, Min-sik Choi in Oldboy en Guy Pearce in Memento..
