wijze post over fable op de boards van BBB
quote:
EARLY HYPE: "Greatest roleplaying game of all time." Every action will have an impact on the world. Players will not be limited in any way as far as exploration, except in cases of "extreme topography." Player character will change in appearance as a result of player activities, injury, etc.
PEOPLES' IMAGINATIONS: Huge world in which we can travel freely similarly to Morrowind, but with far deeper NPC interaction, better story telling, and unprecedented open-endedness. Freedom to live out any life players chooes. This opens the door to fantasies of all sorts of improbable gameplay moments and experiences.
REALITY: Broad console-style RPG with semi-KOTOR-like (i.e. tried and true console-style RPG structure) paths, situated between diverse, richly detailed towns and other locations, and populated by NPCs featuring unprecedented interaction opportunities. Lush graphics, and accesible intuitive combat. Player character appearance still changes based upon food intake, sun exposure, injury, and experience point allocation which is under the control of the player. Fun, seemingly deep NPC simiulation to experiment and play around with.
WISHFUL THINKING: People say "No no! The game really isn't that limited with respect to exploration. It's just an early build (in 2004?) or an intentionally limited demo (again I say...in 2004?? Four months prior to release?? At the last E3 they'll have a chance to try to set straight what the game is really like before their peers in the industry??) and the final product will be much less limited! Really!" While it is possible that this is true, and if it is more power to BBB...I wasn't born yesterday.
Now, cut out the "Peoples' Imaginations" and "Wishful Thinking" pieces of this puzzle, and there isn't, atleast technically speaking, anything false in the initial hype for Project Ego, when compared to the near-complete product of Fable. (Especially if you factor in developers' nack for *ahem* "poetic liscense.")
Peoples' imaginations ran away with themselves. Maybe the fans of the game are to blame for this. Maybe BBB is to blame. Perhaps both. Regardless, it is time to accept the reality of what Fable is, and focus on it's strengths. If we had never heard any of the hype for Fable, or let our minds run wild with thoughts of the "greatest RPG of all time," and were presented for the first time with what we now know of Fable, we would be very very excited to play the game. A good game, is a good game. Since we haven't played the finished product yet, we can't say whether Fable will be one or not. But to negate it's strengths and features just because it didn't live up to our lofty and frankly, unrealistic expectations, is ridiculous.
ACCEPTANCE: The game, even if it is limited with respect to exploration, is unlimited in so many other ways. This game appears to be so deep, that the "extreme topography" (*cough* fences *cough*) issue is more or less superficial. The game will either be good, or suck, regardless of that single aspect.
This is the last I will post on this subject before Fable's release. It seems to only lead to arguments as the eternal clash between the pragmatists, optimists, and pecimists, rages on.
Persoonlijk zou ik de heren van lionhead wel eens een pr lesje willen geven, al weet ik er geen klap vanaf
