quote:Jade Empire's graphics engine builds upon the one used in Knights of the Old Republic, and the improvements are immediately noticeable. Featuring twice the number of render paths as KOTOR, as well as a new physics model for clothing/hair, believable mo-capped animation, character models with almost two to three times the number of polygons as KOTOR (5-6 thousand), and the same great lip-synching found in the Star Wars masterpiece, it's safe to say that Jade Empire has the technology to back up its ambitious gameplay. The game even runs noticeably smoother than Knights, even at its early state. BioWare has also implemented a lighting technique known as rim lighting that casts a subtle glow around the character models in appropriate situations. It sounds simple -- and it is -- but the final effect does wonders in creating a scene where the characters actually feel like part of the scene. Difficult to convey in words, the rim lighting best appreciated when seen in person. But all of this tech is ultimately meaningless if the art direction isn't up to par. Thankfully, Jade Empire boasts some truly fantastic-looking worlds and competent character designs.
