It's the Warner Bros. epic Troy, which has thus far grossed $419.3 million, 70 percent of it from overseas ticket sales, according to the Box Office Mojo website. Not far behind in third place is Fox's The Day After Tomorrow, which has grossed $398.4 million worldwide, 61 percent of it from overseas markets. Shrek 2, the highest grossing film domestically this year, is fifth in worldwide sales, but it has rolled out in only a handful of overseas markets and therefore only 1.5 percent of its gross comes from overseas sales.

Michael Moore's controversial documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 broke single-day box office records at the two New York theaters where it played Wednesday, Reuters reports. The movie, which criticizes President Bush and the war in Iraq, sold $49,000 worth of tickets at the Loew's Village 7 theater, beating the venue's single-day record of $43,435 held by 1997's Men in Black, according to distributors Lions Gate Films and IFC Films, while at the Lincoln Plaza theater, Fahrenheit took in more than $30,000 to top the $24,013 set by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000, Reuters reports. A spokesman for Lions Gate Films said the company debuted the movie in the two theaters to help build good word-of-mouth ahead its wider debut June 25 in 868 theaters.

Michael Moore's new controversial documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 topped the box office with an impressive $21.8 million from just 868 screens. The film averaged a big $25,115 per screen, which is the third highest average of the year behind only Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ and DreamWorks' Shrek 2. The opening also marks the highest ever for a documentary of any type (including IMAX and concert films), is the biggest opening for a wide release under 1,000 screens (beating previous record holder Rocky III in 1982), is the best opening ever for a Palme d'Or winner (topping previous record holder Pulp Fiction in 1994), and the film has already outgrossed the $21.6 million total box office for Moore's Academy Award-winning Bowling for Columbine. The film's distributors will expand the movie for Fourth of July weekend and again on Friday, July 9.

DreamWorks' The Terminal also dropped two spots to fourth with $13.9 million its second weekend. The $60 million Steven Spielberg-directed film, starring Tom Hanks, has earned $41.8 million so far.

Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban made $11.4 million in its fourth weekend to bring its total to $211.7 million. The $130 million sequel has earned $481.1 million worldwide, allowing it to climb to #35 on the all-time worldwide blockbuster list. "Sorcerer's Stone" has the third spot with $976.5 million and "Chamber of Secrets" the seventh spot with $876.7 million.

Watch out Spidey, here comes Shrek 2! The $70 million-budgeted animated DreamWorks blockbuster sequel pulled in another $10.5 million in its sixth weekend to push its massive total to $397.1 million. The #1 film of the year so far is now just a little over $6 million away from overtaking Spider-Man ($403.7 million) in the fifth spot on the all-time domestic blockbuster list.

Columbia Pictures\' Spider-Man 2 earned an estimated $180.1 million from 4,152 theaters in its first six days of release during the 4th of July holiday, setting a record for biggest first six days ever, surpassing The Matrix Reloaded which collected $146.9 million in the same amount of time last year. The first Spider-Man earned $144.2 million its first six days, but that opened on a Friday. For the three-day period from Friday to Sunday, the Spidey sequel made$88.3 million, which is the top 4th of July opening in history, passing the studio\'s own Men in Black II, which pulled in $52.1 million for the three days. For the four days, Friday to Monday, the sequel made $115.8 million. Spidey 2 also marks the biggest 5-day opening total for a film with $152.6 million, a record also previously held by \"Reloaded\" ($144.4 million). The $88.3 million is the biggest opening weekend ever for the month of July, dropping Austin Powers in Goldmember\'s $73.1 million to second place. While it didn\'t pass the first Spidey film\'s weekend record of $114.8 million, again the sequel opened on Wednesday which gave moviegoers a lot of time to see it before the weekend.

Michael Moore\'s documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 dropped to the second spot adding another impressive $21 million over the four days from 1,725 theaters. The $6 million-budgeted film has already earned a big $60.1 million so far.

Op de Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation-lijst (aangepast aan inflatie dus) is Titanic's positie nog indrukwekkender. Deze lijst (voor Amerika) geeft feitelijk het aantal bezoekers aan, waar overigens in de meeste landen naar gekeken wordt.

Omgerekend naar hedendaagse dollars zou Titanic dus op $844M staan, wat nog $244M meer is dan de niet-omgerekende $600M.

$600M komt al geen enkele film in de buurt, laat staan die $844M, and counting...

Overigens staat Titanic zelf natuurlijk niet nummer 1 op die lijst, maar aan de andere kant zie ik eigenlijk geen enkele nieuwe film ooit nog in de buurt komen van Titanic. Wat wel opmerkelijk is, want waarom zou geen enkele film meer de bezoekersaantallen van Titanic kunnen halen? Dat het niet snel zal gebeuren is duidelijk, maar nooit?

The Phantom Menace kwam tot tweederde van het aantal bezoekers van Titanic. Shrek 2 kwam drie jaar geleden tot 55%. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest trok de helft.

Wie gaat Titanic verslaan? Nou ja, eerst maar eens die $600M zien te halen, want die $844M is wel absurd veel (en omgerekend dus het bezoekersaantal van Titanic).
