Typische filler entry.. opvulling in de show. Leuk tussendoortje.

I have seen a lot of discussion re: the Italian 🇮🇹 jury's tendency to downvote/ignore favorites in #eurovision. As an Italian, I'll try my best to explain why I do think this happens and why I don't think it's done in a tactical/strategic way like most eurofans think 👀
Most members of the 🇮🇹 jury are either music journalists or professionals in a close relationship with RAI. This category of people usually secretly despises ESC and doesn't really "get" it, mostly comparing it negatively with Sanremo and using the same categories when rating it
Most of these people lack "ESC culture", which doesn't mean knowing all songs in the contest history or mindlessly rooting for the season's faves, but being unable to appreciate the value of stagings, performances, different music genres and music sung in different languages
Reading the "scorecards" many journalists give out publicly each year would enlight eurofans on how most of the Italian music echelons and mainstream media really see the contest, which is mostly a way to assert our (presumed) musical superiority.
Remember many of them have Sanremo as their only comparison meter and are detached from ESC as they can be, and therefore in their personal categories Käärijä is a goblin, Erika Vikman is a slut, Tommy Cash insults the entire 🇮🇹 population, Nemo is a skirt-wearing f*ggot etc.
Most Italian jurors tend to award the kind of songs that they can "rationalize" as "worthy" in their mental categories, which is whatever inoffensive pop song in English they can see being a hit on Italian radio.
This is how I could actually predict our 12p of 🇧🇪 before the show
I don't think this is done in a strategic way to penalize favourites and better our chances. Italian jurors might not even know who the favorites are, or if they know, they may vote against them in a "surely this sh*t can't go 1st place, not with our votes" way
Some proof to my theory: the 2024 jury, where several of its components demonstrated their interest in ESC afterwards (BigMama was commentator in 2025, Marcello Sacchetta staged 2026) joined most juries in giving their 12p to Nemo 🇨🇭 in a year where Italy was very competitive
Of course this reasoning doesn't encompass every single individual that was part of an 🇮🇹 jury in ESC or in any NF.
But having attended ESC as "press" 7 times and heard a lot of what is said behind the scenes, I'm fairly confident in this interpretation
