At least 12 people were killed and more than 77 000 affected after Tropical Cyclone Fytia struck northwestern Madagascar at 01:40 UTC on January 31, 2026. Winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) and intense rainfall caused severe damage across 35 districts, with Soalala and Mitsinjo among the hardest hit. Fytia is the 7th named storm of the 2025/26 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season.
Tropical Cyclone Fytia formed over the Mozambique Channel on January 30 and made landfall at Soalala in northwestern Madagascar at around 01:40 UTC on January 31. It then tracked southeast over the southern Indian Ocean on February 2 and 3, weakening after crossing Madagascar.
The storm made landfall with an estimated minimum central pressure of 962 hPa. Maximum sustained winds near the center reached over 185 km/h (115 mph), with gusts of up to 210 km/h (131 mph), making it a Category 3-equivalent cyclone.
It then moved east-southeast across central and eastern regions until February 1, bringing intense rainfall and damaging winds to multiple regions.
A total of 35 districts in nine regions were affected by the cyclone, including Analamanga, Atsinanana, Vakinankaratra, Boeny, Betsiboka, Melaky, Sofia, Alaotra Mangoro, and Itasy. Soalala and Mitsinjo districts in the Boeny region were the worst hit. Access is currently limited to air transport due to flooded and damaged roads.

quote:Gezani forecast to reach intense tropical cyclone strength near Mozambique coast, more than 1 million at risk
Tropical Cyclone Gezani was located in the Mozambique Channel at 12:00 UTC on February 12, 2026, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) and is forecast to intensify to 165 km/h (105 mph) near the Mozambique coast by February 14. Gale- to hurricane-force winds, rainfall totals locally reaching 200 mm (8 inches), and high seas of 7–10 m (23–33 feet) are possible in Inhambane Province, while Sofala and Gaza provinces remain saturated from prolonged flooding that has already displaced hundreds of thousands.
Tropical Cyclone Gezani was located approximately 530 km (330 miles) east-northeast of Beira, Mozambique, and about 690 km (430 miles) west of Toamasina, Madagascar, at 12:00 UTC on February 12, according to the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) La Réunion.
The system was moving west-southwest at 20 km/h (12 mph), toward Mozambique, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) and a central pressure of 983 hPa. Satellite analysis indicated a developing eye configuration and a deep vertical circulation.
Forecast guidance from RSMC indicates steady intensification over the next 36 hours, with winds expected to reach 165 km/h (105 mph) by 00:00 UTC on February 14. At that stage, Gezani would be classified as an intense tropical cyclone under Southwest Indian Ocean standards.
The forecast track keeps the system moving west-southwest toward the Mozambique coastline through February 13 before turning south and later east under the influence of an approaching upper-level trough.
While a definitive landfall remains uncertain, forecasters state that a very close coastal passage or temporary partial landfall cannot be ruled out.
Expected impacts in Inhambane Province, Mozambique, include gale-force winds beginning Friday evening, February 13, with storm-force winds likely and hurricane-force winds possible during the night into early February 14.
Heavy rainfall along the coast of Mozambique is forecast from Friday night through Saturday afternoon, with totals near 100 mm (4 inches) in less than 24 hours near the coast and locally 200 mm (8 inches) at the point of closest approach. This is sufficient to trigger renewed flooding in the region, given current soil saturation and elevated river levels.
Waves are expected to exceed 4 m (13 feet) beginning Friday afternoon, with temporary peaks between 7–10 m (23–33 feet) Friday night into Saturday morning. Localized storm surge near 50 cm (1.6 feet) is possible along exposed coastal sections.

Tropical Cyclone Horacio intensified to a Category 5-equivalent system over the central Southwest Indian Ocean east of Mauritius on February 22, 2026, becoming the strongest tropical cyclone recorded globally this year. The storm reached sustained winds near 260 km/h (160 mph) before moving southward over open waters.
Tropical Cyclone Horacio developed from a low-pressure disturbance east of Rodrigues Island on February 18 and was named by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) La Réunion the following day. Within 48 hours, it underwent rapid intensification over warm waters with favorable upper-level outflow, reaching a very intense status by February 22.
At its peak between February 22 and 23, RSMC La Réunion estimated 10-minute sustained winds around 230 to 240 km/h (140 to 150 mph) and gusts near 280 to 300 km/h (175 to 185 mph) with a central pressure of approximately 910 hPa.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) concurrently assessed 1-minute sustained winds of about 260 km/h (160 mph), placing Horacio at a Category 5 equivalent cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson scale and the strongest tropical cyclone recorded globally so far in 2026.
The cyclone tracked south-southwestward east of Mauritius before turning south across the open Indian Ocean.
Outer rainbands brought periods of rain and strong gusts to Rodrigues Island, where winds reached around 100 km/h (60 mph), and seas exceeded 6 to 8 m (20 to 26 feet).

Tropical Storm Amanda formed as the first tropical storm of the 2026 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season on June 3, 2026. At 08:00 PDT (15:00 UTC), the storm was located 2 375 km (1 475 miles) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, and was moving northwestward.
The first tropical storm of the 2026 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season formed from tropical depression One-E at 08:00 PDT (15:00 UTC) on June 3 and was named Amanda. At the time, the system was located roughly 2 375 km (1 475 miles) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
Maximum sustained winds reached 65 km/h (40 mph), and Amanda was moving northwest at 13 km/h (8 mph). The estimated minimum central pressure was 1 006 hPa. Tropical storm force winds extended outward up to 95 km (60 miles).
The system is flanked by a mid-level ridge to the northeast and an upper-level low to the northwest, supporting a northwestward to west-northwestward motion through June 5.
A turn toward the west, then west-southwest, with a slower forward motion is forecast over the weekend as the ridge strengthens. It is forecast to continue strengthening during the next 36 hours.
“It is noted that GFS and EC SHIPS RI model guidance are showing a 20 to 30 percent chance of rapid intensification during the next 24 to 36 hours,” the NHC said.
After 36-48 hours, Amanda will move into a less-favorable environment with increasing shear and a drier mid-level airmass, supporting steady weakening through this weekend.
The storm currently poses no threat to land.

quote:Tropical Storm Bertha brings flash flood and storm surge threat from Florida to Louisiana
Tropical Storm Bertha, the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, formed over the northeastern Gulf at 19:00 CDT on July 20, 2026 (00:00 UTC on July 21) and strengthened to 85 km/h (50 mph) by 06:00 UTC. A Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Watch are in effect along sections of the northern Gulf Coast, where heavy rainfall, flash flooding, coastal inundation, dangerous surf, and rip currents were forecast from western Florida into southern Louisiana.
Bertha is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to portions of the Gulf Coast from Alabama westward to southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night and Wednesday, July 21 and 22, where a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect. Tropical storm conditions are possible for portions of the Florida Panhandle, Metro New Orleans, and the southern Gulf Coast of Louisiana, where a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect.
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for the Alabama, Mississippi, and southeastern Louisiana coasts, where a life-threatening storm surge is possible.
Interests elsewhere in Louisiana and Texas should monitor the progress of this system, as additional watches or warnings could be required for portions of that area on Tuesday.
Areas of flash flooding will be possible through Thursday along the Gulf Coast and adjacent inland locations from western Florida north of Fort Myers to southern Louisiana with isolated instances of flash flooding possible westward into portions of Texas coast later in the week.
At 01:00 CDT (06:00 UTC) on July 21, Bertha’s center was located about 205 km (125 miles) south of Panama City, Florida, and 320 km (200 miles) southeast of Mobile, Alabama. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that the storm was moving northwest at 4 km/h (2 mph), with a minimum central pressure of 998 hPa. Tropical-storm-force winds extended as far as 110 km (70 miles) from the center.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from the Alabama–Florida border westward to the Jefferson/Plaquemines Parish border in Louisiana. Tropical-storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida westward to the Florida–Alabama border and from west of the Jefferson/Plaquemines Parish border to Morgan City, Louisiana. The watch includes metropolitan New Orleans, Lake Pontchartrain, and Lake Maurepas. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the Florida Panhandle later on July 21 and in watched portions of Louisiana from late July 21 into July 22.
A Storm Surge Watch extends from the Alabama–Florida border to the mouth of the Mississippi River, indicating the possibility of life-threatening inundation from rising coastal water within 48 hours. The NHC said additional watches or warnings could be required later on July 21.
Peak water levels of 0.6–1.2 m (2–4 feet) above normally dry ground are forecast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Alabama–Florida border if the surge coincided with high tide. Levels of 0.3–0.9 m (1–3 feet) were forecast from Morgan City to the mouth of the Mississippi River, in Lake Pontchartrain, and along the Florida coast from Indian Pass to Chassahowitzka.
