Het is gewoon een uitstekend platform voor niet-PDC-spelers om veel vlieguren te maken. Er zijn veel spelers in de scene die het als een doel zien. En ben ook supertrots om straks een ploegmaat van me te zien gooien daar.

Oud-topdarter Mervyn King verkeert in financieel zwaar weer. De Engelsman is afgelopen week persoonlijk failliet verklaard en dreigt zijn huis te verliezen.

De nu 58-jarige King maakte aan het begin van deze eeuw indruk op het dartspodium. Hij was in 2002 en 2004 verliezend WK-finalist bij de BDO en bereikte na zijn overstap naar de PDC de vierde positie op de Order of Merit.

King dacht naar eigen (ten onrechte) dat de ge�nde bedragen tijdens zijn succesvolste jaren neerkwamen op 'winst' en niet op 'inkomsten'. De Britse belastingdienst was niet op de hoogte gesteld van de verdiensten van King. Nu is hij de fiscus een bedrag van omgerekend bijna 600.000 euro verschuldigd.

"Ik heb zelf contact opgenomen met de fiscus", zegt King tegen The Sun. "Want ik wist dat dit eraan zat te komen. Dat is beter dan dat ze na twintig jaar erachter zouden komen en zouden vragen: 'Meneer King, waarom heeft u de afgelopen twintig jaar geen belasting betaald?' Dan was ik meteen in de gevangenis beland."

"Ik heb de laatste twee decennia mijn kop in het zand gestoken. Nu komt er op welke wijze dan ook duidelijkheid. Het ligt buiten mijn macht. De curator bepaalt. We kunnen onze huis verliezen. Mijn vrouw Tracy maakt zich daar zorgen over. Als het zo is, dan is het zo. Dan moeten wij en onze drie honden ergens onderdak vinden."

King wil jonge darters waarschuwen
King kampt al jaren met geldzorgen. Tijdens de coronapandemie werkte de dartsroutinier als bezorger voor Amazon om het hoofd boven water te houden. Vorig jaar verloor hij de PDC Tour-kaart, waardoor hij niet automatisch is geplaatst voor dartstoernooien.

"De laatste vijf jaar heb ik geen nacht geslapen. Het probleem is dat je denkt dat de lucratieve reis in het darten eeuwig blijft doorgaan, maar dat is niet zo. Helaas kan ik de klok niet terugdraaien", zegt King, die met zijn verhaal vooral jonge darters wil waarschuwen.

"Anderen moeten niet in dezelfde positie belanden. Geloof me als ik zeg dat je echt niet in deze situatie terecht wilt komen. Ik wens dit mijn ergste vijand niet toe. Ik was na�ef wat betreft belastingzaken. Ik dacht echt dat ik geen belasting hoefde te betalen, omdat ik er vanuit ging dat het geen inkomsten waren."

"Ik had nog gehoopt om alles op te lossen met ��n grote titel en geldprijs, maar die kwam niet. Vanuit de BDO of PDC was er verder ook geen begeleiding. Ze geven je het geld en dat is het. Toen ik erachter kwam dat ik alsnog belasting moest betalen, was ik de fiscus al enorm veel geld verschuldigd."

During the trial, Sarah Wilson, 45, of Kirkcaldy, Fife, admitted that on May 18 last year at Lochore Miners’ Welfare Institute she assaulted Pamela Ritchie by seizing her by the hair and repeatedly punching her on the body.

Chardonnay Wilson, also of Kirkcaldy, was found guilty of a charge that she assaulted Yvonne Ritchie by attempting to seize her essential feeding tube.

The court was told the baby shower for her sister Chantelle, ahead of the birth of her daughter, started at 1pm.

She said the two families were sitting at different tables and ‘at first it was fine’.

But bad feeling began to escalate after a game named ‘Would Mummy Rather’.

She told the court there was a question: ‘Would mummy rather put a bottle on for the baby or open a bottle of wine?’

Someone from the father-to-be’s family then shouted out the new mother would open a bottle of wine, and Chardonnay Wilson told the court: ‘Chantelle got upset and everything started to escalate from there.’

Her mother Sarah and the other mother Ms Ritchie were ‘arguing back and forward’, the court heard, and she Chardonnay Wilson said: ‘My mum told her they could speak any other day but not to spoil the occasion.’

But arguing continued during a game of ‘Baby Bingo’ and there were allegations of sexual comments being made.

And there were then claims about an abusive comment, aimed at the Wilsons, being written on a paper plate.

Chardonnay Wilson said she had also written a message in the baby book, but someone had ripped it out.

Gino Gambale, Chardonnay Wilson’s solicitor, asked for his client to be given an absolute discharge as a conviction would end her career as a carer.

He said she had worked as a carer for the elderly and vulnerable for the past three years, starting at the age of 18.

He said: ‘This was the baby shower for her sister and as we’ve heard tensions heightened throughout the day.

‘The families were not getting on and this has spilled outside.

‘This was a serious assault but something that happened very quickly.’

Sheriff Susan Duff said it would ‘not be proportionate’ to impose a sentence which would end a young person’s career in this case.

She therefore agreed to the defence request for an absolute discharge, which means the offence will not go on Wilson’s record.

Sarah Wilson will be sentenced next month after the sheriff called for reports.

Sarah is the niece and Chardonnay the great-niece of Jocky Wilson, who won the World Professional Darts Championship in 1982 and 1989. He died aged 62 in 2012.

The baby shower was for Chardonnay's sister Chantelle, who was celebrating the imminent arrival of her baby daughter, and started at 1pm.

Chardonnay continues to deny claims she was behind an attack on Yvonne Ritchie by punching or kicking her and trying to pull out the breathing tube.

Chardonnay told the newspaper: 'I didn't touch her feeding tube and I didn't pull her feeding tube out. I didn't do anything. It took three of them to try and attack me.'

'I was accused of battering Yvonne and I was accused of attempting to pull her feeding tube out. This has gone on for two years.'

Chantelle herself has posted on Facebook in support of her sister and her mother following the trial, sharing a photo of them.

Sarah Wilson is due to be sentenced next month after the sheriff called for reports.
