Ukraine will launch the production of 155-mm shells using the technology of the Norwegian company Nammo.

The Norwegian government stated that it had opened the way for the transfer of Norwegian defense technologies to Ukraine.

Nammo is one of the largest ammunition producers in Europe.

“Our government has taken several steps to increase the production of artillery ammunition in Norway. At the same time, we recognize the importance of strengthening the capacity of Ukrainians to produce modern ammunition in Ukraine,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St�re.

Nammo has signed an agreement with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency to significantly increase the production of artillery ammunition and missiles.

According to the plan, the production of shells can be increased by 10 times, and other shells and rocket engines by half. Production of 120-mm tank ammunition will also be increased.

“We are enabling Nammo to significantly increase its production capacity to help meet the needs of Norway, NATO and Ukraine,” said Norwegian Defense Minister Bj�rn Arild Gram.

The government has allocated funds to allow Nammo to transfer technology and experience to a Ukrainian partner. The funding will be provided under the Nansen program.

On January 1, 2024, the Norwegian government approved a decision to directly sell weapons and defense products to Ukraine.

Export licenses for direct sales will be granted only on a case-by-case basis and will be carefully evaluated.

The Nansen program provides 5-year support for Ukraine. Its total cost is NOK 75 billion. In early 2023, the Norwegian government announced an acceleration of funding for the program by NOK 2.5 billion, bringing the total amount of support to NOK 10 billion.

In January, it was reported that the Norwegian government would allocate NOK 2 billion ($190.48 million) to increase the potential of the country’s defense industry. Norwegian defense company Nammo will receive NOK 1 billion of these funds.

On August 23, Energoatom reported that Russian shelling the day before had damaged a power line through which the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP received electricity from the Ukrainian power system.

The damage to the line put the ZNPP on the brink of a blackout.

Repair crews were ready to start restoration work promptly but were waiting for military permission. Currently, ZNPP can receive electricity from both the main and backup lines.

Since the beginning of the Russian occupation, the Zaporizhzhya NPP has experienced eight complete blackouts and one partial blackout when emergency diesel generators and safety systems were activated.

The video of the strikes was posted on the Sonyashnyk Telegram channel, which is affiliated with Ukrainian aviation.

“Our aviation has struck at the concentration of Russian manpower and ammunition,” the group said.

This settlement in Korenevsky district is located near the border with Ukraine.

Astana rejects Belarussian leader’s criticism over Russia-Ukraine war stance.

Belarus’ dictator, Aleksandr Lukashenko, recently called out Kazakhstan for not being sufficiently supportive of Russia’s efforts to militarily bludgeon Ukraine into submission. Kazakh officials did not take kindly to such criticism.

Lukashenko took a not-so-veiled swipe at Kazakhstan’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war during an interview broadcast on Russian television on August 15, casting Astana as a pacifist observer. He also hinted that Kazakhstan was insufficiently grateful for the political support that Moscow has provided in the past and may provide in the future. Russian forces helped quell upheaval in early 2022 in Kazakhstan, a bout of violence now commonly referred to as the January events.

“The time is not far off when you will come to Russia and ask for support and help. There is no one else to ask,” Lukashenko said in the interview, making an apparent reference to Kazakhstan.

The Kazakh Foreign Ministry summoned the Belarusian ambassador to explain Lukashenko’s unwelcome intervention. During the August 21 meeting in Astana, Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu reminded the Belarusian ambassador, Pavel Utyupin, that Kazakhstan pursues “a peaceful foreign policy based on the principles of the UN and international law,” the press service of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported.

With an eye on securing its own northern regions, Kazakhstan has expressed its commitment to the principles of the inviolability of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine since the start of Russia’s unprovoked invasion in February 2022. Officially, Astana also complies with sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, although there have been multiple reports of sanctions-busting activities.

Kazakhstan has long pursued a multi-vectored foreign policy, striving to balance the interests and influence of major powers, including Russia, China, the United States and European Union.

In June of that year, at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev publicly, with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin sitting next to him, declared that his country does not recognize the independence of the eastern regions of Ukraine, the Russia-backed self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. A month later, Tokayev, during a telephone conversation with the head of the European Council Charles Michel, assured him of Kazakhstan’s readiness to provide support in solving energy problems in European countries, which have significantly reduced oil and gas imports from Russia.

The seizure of the penal colony will be an important step in documenting war crimes committed by Russia against prisoners of war, human rights activists said.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, one of the main places where Ukrainian prisoners were held was a detention center in the city of Kursk, according to the Media Initiative for Human Rights.

Subsequently, the organization found that female prisoners were also taken to the women's penal colony in Malaya Loknya, which is designed to hold over 200 people. In the fall of 2022, more than 50 captured military and civilian women were held there, the Media Initiative for Human Rights said.

The human rights organization documented the testimonies of several prisoners held in this colony. They mentioned that physical force and humiliation were used against them, which led to significant health problems.

Former prisoners also said that they could not remember the wardens or the administration of the colony because they hid their faces and did not allow prisoners to raise their heads when the staff entered the cell.

In recent months, Ukrainian forces have launched a series of drone strikes aimed at damaging Russia's military infrastructure and oil industry.

Russian air defense units destroyed several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Voronezh Oblast on Aug. 24, Gusev claimed. Falling weapons fragments caused a fire and "detonation of explosive objects" at an unnamed site.

The Russian Telegram channel Astra reported that the explosion occurred at an ammunition depot in Ostrogozhsk.

No casualties were reported, and emergency services are at work on site, Gusev said.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify Gusev's claims at the time of publication.

Ukrainian forces have previously targeted military airfields, oil refineries, and ammunition depots in Voronezh Oblast.

Gusev reported Ukraine's July 7 attack on a large ammunition depot in the region in similar terms, describing detonations of unidentified objects rather than specifying the facility that was hit.

Voronezh Oblast borders Ukraine's Luhansk Oblast, which remains partially occupied by Russian forces.

Dat het holle gezever van De Wijk bij defensiebobo’s gretiger aftrek vindt dan een homoseksuele rekruut in het Griekse leger, en dat iedereen dat dan maar normaal vindt, is misschien debiel, maar het is ook volkomen begrijpelijk. Naast emeritus hoogleraar International Relations and Security en oprichter van het Haagse Centrum voor Strategische Studies is Rob de Wijk nou eenmaal ook een gebocheld Roemeens dametje dat zichzelf in een slecht zittend pak heeft gehesen om haar handlezingen aan bestuurders te slijten. En net zoals dat gebochelde Roemeense dametje heeft Rob ook een uitstekende neus voor mensen die hij geld kan aftroggelen. Want als er een sector is waar het geld tegen de plinten klotst, terwijl de speknekken aan de top wel wat hulp kunnen gebruiken met nadenken en maar al te graag in de toekomst willen kijken, dan is het de defensiesector wel.

Les ��n bij het geven van handlezingen, trekken van horoscopen of leggen van tarotkaarten, is dat de klant altijd moet horen wat hij wil horen. Daarbij is het vooral niet de bedoeling met de creativiteit aan de haal te gaan, maar iedereen in hun eigen gelijk te bevestigen. Anders is het snel gedaan met de klandizie. Wil een jonge meid met een nieuwe vriend haar toekomst weten, dan wordt d’r verteld dat ze binnenkort zal trouwen. Rob begrijpt dat maar al te goed. Wil een topambtenaar van de NAVO weten wat er voor het bondgenootschap in het verschiet ligt? Dan schrijft De Wijk gewoon tien keer dezelfde column over Poetin: ‘Poetin heeft geen recht om oorlog te voeren, Zelensky wel’, ‘Poetin en Netanyahu hebben geen ruimte meer voor oplossingen’, ‘Poetin zit vast in een doodlopende weg, hij kan alleen nog wild om zich heen meppen’, ‘Pacifisten vergeten dat Poetin maar een taal verstaat: die van macht’ en ‘Een gevoelige nederlaag voor Poetin: niet minder, maar meer NAVO’. Nu is het leven in Rusland ook niet alles, maar als we de godganse tijd met dit soort onzin geconfronteerd moeten worden, begrijp ik wel dat Poetin het niet zo opheeft met journalisten die over hem schrijven.

Een ander geheim van het waarzeggersgilde waar De Wijk goed van op de hoogte is, is dat alle voorspellingen precies vaag genoeg moeten zijn om op elke situatie toegepast te kunnen worden. Zo lezen we op de achterzijde van zijn nieuwe boek, Het nieuwe IJzeren Gordijn, de volgende analyse: ‘We stevenen af op een permanente confrontatie met Rusland. Maar niet alles is verloren, concludeert De Wijk in dit fascinerende nieuwe boek. De Oekra�ne-oorlog heeft Europa gedwongen zich aan te passen aan een nieuwe tijd. En paradoxaal genoeg liggen daarin juist kansen om onze welvaart en veiligheid beter te verankeren’. Dat slaat natuurlijk in zijn algemeenheid helemaal nergens op. Het klinkt misschien als een genuanceerde mening over een militair conflict, maar als de conclusie van je verhaal over de Oekra�ne-oorlog net zo goed van toepassing is op, zeg, de zomertijd, is het misschien toch beter gewoon je bek te houden.

Wil overigens niet zeggen dat de emeritus professor nooit de mist in gaat en nooit een controleerbare claim doet. Integendeel. Rob laat zich er al jaren op voorstaan dat hij als enige in het land waarschuwt dat Rusland met kernkoppen gaat strooien. In zijn afstudeerscriptie: ‘Dat probeerde ik al in mijn afstudeerscriptie’. Tijdens een interview met Volkskrant magazine twee jaar terug: ‘Er wordt voor het eerst in de geschiedenis openlijk gesproken over een kernwapenoorlog. Dan is het wel terecht dat iemand zich zorgen begint te maken’. En in het nieuwe boek: ‘In landen als Nederland werd schouderophalend over kernwapens gesproken. Zo’n vaart zou het toch niet lopen?’. Nu kan u zeggen dat het dat tot nu toe ook niet heeft gedaan en Robs voorspelling daarom gelul van de bovenste plank is. Dus doet een journalist van het FD dat ook. ‘Feit is: Poetin heeft het nog steeds niet gedaan.’ De Wijk: ‘Hij kan het maar ��n keer doen en dan is het wel een klap die je mogelijkerwijs met zijn allen niet overleeft. Of je gaat een drempel over waardoor de wereld er echt anders uitziet’. Als het waar was geweest dan klopte het. Of niet. Wat een debiel.

Waar doet zo’n man het eigenlijk voor? Zit die man de gehele dag te piekeren over kernoorlog uit menslievendheid? ‘Ik zat na een bespreking op het NAVO-hoofdkwartier met een collega in een gepantserde auto in Kabul en wij moesten eigenlijk worden opgeblazen, maar de bom sloeg 50 meter achter ons in. Er waren twintig doden, hoorden we later.’ Interviewer: ‘Wat heftig.’ Rob: ‘Nou ja, er is niks ergs gebeurd, dus het valt wel mee’. Waar hij wel wakker van ligt? ‘Afhankelijk van hoe de oorlog escaleert, is het denkbaar dat het nachtmerriescenario van een blokkade van de straat van Hormuz uitkomt. De inflatie loopt dan hard op.’ Volgens Rob de Wijk moeten we oppassen met de intercontinentale raketten omdat een kernoorlog nog wel eens slecht uit zou kunnen pakken voor de economie. Ieder normaal mens zou zich zorgen maken om belangrijkere zaken. De belachelijke hoeveelheden kankercolumns die De Wijk erover zou schrijven bijvoorbeeld.

De VAE bemiddelde voor de zevende keer tussen beide landen over een ruil. Het zou de eerste gevangenenruil tussen Oekra�ne en Rusland zijn sinds het Oekra�ense leger op 6 augustus het offensief in Koersk begon.

The Yemeni official told TASS that a crew member of Sounion was wounded in the latest attack.

For example, Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in June 2023. Rebuilding it could cost over $1 billion and take 6-7 years. This act not only disrupted a key logistical route along the Dnipro River but also deprived Ukraine of access to the power plant. The disappearance of the Kakhovka Reservoir has created significant challenges for the agricultural sector, as the loss of water resources has affected irrigation in the region.

Ukraine’s continental shelf holds considerable economic interest, with projected resources estimated at 2.3 billion tons, representing about 40% of Ukraine’s total oil and gas reserves. Within Ukraine’s maritime economic zone, natural gas resources are projected at 1,751 billion cubic meters, with 48 billion cubic meters of proven reserves. Access to these resources will allow Ukraine to work towards energy independence.

Logistics and food security are also critical issues. Ukraine is among the top 10 grain-exporting countries, with its products reaching Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Safe export routes are essential for maintaining stability in many regions of the world, making this not only a national concern but also an issue that requires coordination with international partners.

Rule of law
Equally important is the commitment to upholding international law. The Maritime Security Strategy is being developed in full compliance with international maritime law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other international treaties and agreements.

This commitment also extends to Ukraine’s responsibilities in all legal matters, with a particular focus on preventing:
• Terrorism
• Illegal migration and human trafficking
• Smuggling
• Illegal fishing
• Drug trafficking
• Piracy
• Arms trafficking

Ukraine further calls for adherence to environmental laws and is ready to collaborate with partners from the Black Sea basin and other countries, learning from the experiences of nations worldwide.

A new approach for Ukraine
Before this document, Ukraine had its own maritime doctrine, but it was far less comprehensive. The new strategy integrates three key vectors: security, economy, and law. Its implementation will require the coordinated effort of nearly all government ministries, local and international businesses, and representatives from other nations. This is a nationwide project with significant international implications, marking a first for Ukraine.

Experts also highlight another significant aspect: the Maritime Security Strategy not only sets clear goals but also includes detailed assessments of the steps already taken. Essentially, it serves as a practical tool that calls for immediate action, with well-defined objectives and methods for measuring progress.

Benefits for other countries
One of the most ambitious aspects of Ukraine’s strategy is its defense component. Ukraine has already managed to neutralize the power of Russia’s formidable Black Sea Fleet, despite having only a fraction of the enemy’s capabilities. Russian warships are now either anchored in bays or have left Crimean waters altogether; dozens of vessels, including the flagship, have been sunk or damaged. Even a submarine was destroyed. Russian ships can no longer operate freely in the Black Sea.

With the support of international partners, Ukraine has also succeeded in restoring export levels from its Black Sea ports—a feat that seemed impossible in 2022.

In 1977, a consortium of Dutch companies led by U.S. firm FMC began building the first of more than 2,000 YPR-765 tracked armored personnel carriers for the Dutch army.

Thirty-five years later, the Dutch retired the last of the 15-ton, 10-person APCs. And 10 years after that, The Netherlands pledged the first of 269 surplus YPR-765s to Ukraine.

In the 29 months since Russia widened its war on Ukraine, Russian troops have captured at least five intact YPR-765s. And on or shortly before Friday, the Russians rode one of their ex-Dutch, ex-Ukrainian APCs back into battle in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast.

Ukrainian forces hit the YPR-765, burning it and killing at least two Russians. A Ukrainian drone observed the gruesome aftermath.

The Russian military went to war in Ukraine in early 2022 with around 11,000 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers—the main vehicles for transporting infantry into battle and supporting them with gunfire.

On the drone-infested, artillery-peppered battlefields in Ukraine, IFVs and APCs are arguably more important than tanks. Which is why, early in the wider war, Carnegie Endowment analyst Michael Kofman warned that “the main Russian shortfall in armored vehicles is not in tanks, but in IFVs.”

That shortfall has gotten worse and worse as the war has ground on. In 29 months, the Russians have lost—destroyed, damaged, abandoned or captured—no fewer than 6,500 IFVs and APCs.

To make the good the losses and equip new units, Russian industry has produced maybe a couple of thousand new vehicles—and also retrieved from long-term storage as many as 7,000 old vehicles.

But the storage sites are becoming increasingly bare. In December, analysts scoured satellite imagery and concluded that stocks of BTR-60/70/80 wheeled APCs are down 30 percent. Nearly 40 percent of BMP tracked IFVs are gone. Just 15 percent of MT-LB armored tractors are left.

Vehicle losses, and the withdrawal of old vehicles from storage, have accelerated since December. Worse for the Russians: many of the vehicles remaining in storage are so badly rusted after decades of exposure to rain and snow that they’re useless as anything but scrap.

The result of this complicated math is that Russian regiments and brigades are running low on armored vehicles. They’ve compensated by using—and losing—more Chinese-made golf carts and Chinese and Belarusian motor bikes.

And if that one YPR-765 that showed up on the Russian side of the war in Donetsk is any indication, they’re also compensating by rolling into battle in captured Ukrainian vehicles.

The influence of social media has broken into every aspect of modern life, including warfare. Russia’s full-scale invasion has generated a plethora of content created by soldiers both near and on the frontlines, ranging from the heartbreaking to the absurd. One trend, however, has drawn significant criticism: Chechen "Akhmat" soldiers posting videos that purport to show active combat but are often revealed to be cartoonishly staged.

A quick scroll through your social media feed will likely reveal daily content ranging from FPV drone strikes on Russian vehicles and GoPro combat footage to TikTok challenges inside trenches. For Chechens, social media seemed to be a powerful tool to craft their message, as their president and military were early to adopt it into their strategies.

The term "TikTok soldier" emerged during the war in Ukraine to describe a type of soldier who uses the battlefield primarily as a backdrop for social media content rather than engaging in actual combat. This label has almost exclusively been applied to Chechen soldiers from the Akhmat Battalion, a unit within the Russian National Guard.

These soldiers have been criticized for posting staged or exaggerated videos of their purported “combat activities” on platforms like TikTok, which are often dismissed as poorly thought-out propaganda rather than genuine military action. The videos sometimes require a sense of suspended disbelief to receive the message.

Frienemies
Chechen social media content generally aims to craft an identity rooted in bravery and honor, emphasizing a close connection to the freedom fighters who have long been associated with the country's struggle. In summary, Chechen identity has been forged through centuries of resistance against the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, culminating in two devastating wars with Russia (1994-1996 and 1999-2000). They were initiated under Yeltsin and ultimately concluded by Vladimir Putin.

After a bloody battle that would see a third of the Chechen population either die or become refugees, the country would be intergrated into the Russian Federation after a brief period of independence. Back then, Akhmad Kadyrov was a central figure. He was a religious leader and rebel during the First War and switched allegiances to the Russian side during the Second War.

Ultimately, Vladimir Putin appointed Kadyrov as the head of the Pro-Kremlin Chechen Republic. In 2004, Akhmad Kadyrov was assassinated and his son Ramzan Kadyrov, the figure many are familiar with today, took his father's place with the blessing of Putin.

Modern Chechnya is a story of conflict, transformation, and a controversial peace. Their capital once bombed to ruins by Russia, was rapidly rebuilt. Kadyrov quickly consolidated power and maintained an unwavering loyalty to Putin, and with that Moscow money started to flow into Grozny, the country's capital.

A TikTok warrior is forged
If for this story we were to only focus on Ramzam Kadyrov’s various social media channels, we would see the modern social engineering techniques of a cult of personality. Grozny’s most capable social media managers and content creators create an idealized image of a glorious leader—who receives an unfathomable amount of praise and admiration from his peers, from the likes of Vladimir Putin to Jean Claude Van Damme, and even Hilary Swank.

When a strong leader acts, those in his orbit will follow. Ramzan Kadyrov himself is an avid user of social media and encourages others in Chechnya to do the same. His active presence on platforms like Instagram has set a precedent, making social media use not just common but also a way to show loyalty to the regime.

For Chechen fighters, especially those involved in wars like the one in Ukraine, TikTok serves as a tool for psychological warfare. Videos that depict strength, readiness, and combat scenarios are aimed at striking fear in the hearts of their enemies and bolstering support back home.

In most videos, these are well-equipped, bearded men firing machine guns or valiantly charging into combat somewhere in Eastern Ukraine. The problem with these videos is how easily they can be discredited, and many online are quick to do just that.

Taking Mariupol (2022)

Chechen forces claim 'victory over Mariupol' as Ukrainians inside Azovstal keep up the fight

Standing in front of a burning building in the center of Russian-occupied Mariupol are dozens of Akhmat TikTok soldiers. In the city, much of the fighting was famously held between Russian Ground Forces and Ukrainian Marines, the National Guard, and the Azov Brigade.

Videos published on Ramzan Kadyrov’s own Telegram channels corroborate the claim that the TikTok soldiers appeared to record their “victory” after the intense fighting had subsided. Viewers can see that nearly every soldier in these videos is wearing spotless military fatigues and appears well-rested and well-fed—conditions that are typically not indicative of having endured prolonged, heavy combat.

However, there were reports of multiple civilian casualties at the hands of “Kadyrovites” inside Russian-occupied Mariupol. This wouldn’t be an isolated incident.

Chechen TikTok soldiers “bravely” engage a building (2022)
Chechen soldiers were spotted in a war-torn town somewhere in eastern Ukraine, creating content for their propaganda purposes. The scene is dramatic as the Chechen soldiers break cover and rush into combat—only to target an empty building.

The soldiers open fire, many of them standing comfortably in the open, seemingly unfazed by the supposed enemy fire. Even the cameraman, filming the entire stunt, remains exposed.

Kadyrov “enters” Ukraine (2022)
Chechen leader Ramazan Kadyrov posted an image of himself knelt at a gas station claiming to be “at war and prayer in Mariupol”. There is one glaring issue though, behind him is a gas pump from Rosneft, a gas station that does not exist in Ukraine. Later, people would geolocated the image to a gas station right outside of Kadyrov’s palace in Grozny.

Kadyrov will personally stop the Wagner Coup (2023)
During the turmoil that would eventually lead to the 2023 failed coup attempt by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner PMC, Ramazan Kadyrov personally vowed to take over their operational duties, which involved storming fortified Ukrainian positions. This never happened, but it did culminate in an online beef between the two groups.

Chechen leaders would post videos of themselves insulting Prigozhin, saying “Stop talking and shouting, say the place and time and we will meet”. Prigozhin and his mercenaries would go on to march onto Moscow in an attempt to take revenge on the Russian Ministry of Defense. Waiting for him was a large column of Chechen TikTok soldiers, recording their massive show of force.

Much of the internet was preparing for a heavyweight spectacle between the two military forces. This unfortunately never happened.

TikTok soldiers sent to secure Russia’s borders (2024)
A Chechen TikTok special forces unit was recently spotted in the Russian town of Sudzha, near the Ukrainian border, as Ukrainian forces advanced into the Kursk region. In one of the Chechen PR videos circulating on social media, an Akhmat soldier is seen firing aimlessly at train tracks. He then turns to the camera and boldly declares, “Soon there will be no Ukraine.”

However, as the situation on the ground escalated, a different reality began to surface. Reports emerged that many of these soldiers retreated when Ukrainian troops drew closer. This was particularly ironic given that their commander, Apti Alaudinov, had been urging Russian conscripts to show bravery and head into battle. The apparent retreat of Alaudinov's own well-equipped and well-funded soldiers raised significant questions about their effectiveness.

Adding to the drama, dozens of Chechen soldiers were reportedly taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces during the incursion. Despite clear evidence circulating online, including videos of the captured fighters, Alaudinov quickly denied the reports, insisting that none of his soldiers had been captured. He later attempted to correct his comments, by saying that none of the Special Forces had been captured*.

All Jokes Aside
All jokes aside, the Akhmat soldiers are a dangerous group with a brutal reputation. Their specific function isn't as a combat force with offensive capability, as they are tasked with quelling any insurrections inside of occupied territories. Their mission often involves the torture and killing of innocent civilians.

Additionally, they are used to “remotivate” Russian soldiers who refuse to fight, establishing torture chambers near the frontlines. Reports have also surfaced that wounded Russian soldiers have also been executed by Akhmat fighters during the attempted siege of Kyiv.

Beyond Ukraine, the Akhmat soldiers serve as Ramzan Kadyrov's private army in Chechnya, where they operate with near impunity, and have a degree of autonomy from the Russian Armed Forces enforcing Kadyrov's will and maintaining his grip on power through whatever means necessary. But this does not stop them from using TikTok to advance their goals.

Kramatorsk has often been the target of Russian shelling since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine in February 2022. It remains one of the largest cities under Ukrainian control in the country’s besieged east.

In April last year, Russian forces carried out a missile strike on Kramatorsk’s railway station that was being used to shelter civilians fleeing the fighting.

More than 50 people, including several children, died in that one attack, which was called “an apparent war crime” by Human Rights Watch and SITU Research.

The pilots and passengers were in their seats; the planes ready for takeoff. But over 350 flights could not depart on schedule from Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport over two days in June. Aeroflot, Russia's state-owned flagship carrier, which claims to be one of the world's largest airlines, had run out of cabin crews.

This tale was shared on the Telegram channel Aviatorshchina, a Russian airline-industry forum.

And it was not a onetime event.

In late July, a shortage of pilots led to the cancellation of 68 Aeroflot flights out of Sheremetyevo, according to Aviatorshchina. Several other flights were postponed.

RFE/RL confirmed these accounts of unprecedented shortages of pilots and crews with three Russian airline-industry sources, who, like other interviewed sources, requested anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic.

"At the peak of the season, when there's enormous demand and people are ready to spend money on tickets, we couldn't handle it," commented a Russian Airbus A320 copilot.

"This is surprising and revealing," the copilot continued. "It's not the first summer (travel peak), and we always managed in the past."

But the situation changed on February 24, 2022, with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Two and a half years later, hampered by sanctions that have increased costs and reduced revenues, Aeroflot cannot always find the planes, pilots, and crew it needs to operate efficiently, an investigation by RFE/RL's Russian Service found.

'No One Will Fly More'
As of December 2023, the Russian government had spent 1.09 trillion rubles ($12 billion) since March 2022 to bolster the Russian airline industry with subsidies, loans, domestic-aircraft manufacturing, and the buyback of leased Boeings and Airbuses, according to Russian government data analyzed by Reuters.

But these measures, focused on the short term, have not sufficed to ensure the supply of trained pilots and crews or well-serviced planes, experts say.

When the 2020-21 COVID pandemic and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine cut into air travel, one airline-safety expert said, Russian airlines slashed pilot schedules, including for "expensive," experienced pilots, and reduced or eliminated training on the foreign planes that, according to the latest government data from April 2022, accounted for over two-thirds of Russia's civilian passenger planes.

After Boeing and Airbus curtailed their business with Russian carriers, the government adopted a June 2022 program to supply Russian airlines with 1,036 domestically produced planes by 2030 that prompted companies to switch to training on Russian-made Superjets.

But Aeroflot now says its passenger traffic has increased by 21.4 percent since the first half of 2023 to 25.4 million passengers over the first half of this year, according to the business daily Kommersant.

Yet scheduling cuts and safety limits placed on pilots' and crews' flying time -- 90 hours per month is regulator Rosaviatsia's maximum -- mean that qualified flight teams are in short supply.

"We cannot and do not want to fly more," commented one Aeroflot employee. "And no one will fly more. That's impossible and not acceptable."

"But no one will go to management and tell them, ‘If you don't want to cut flights, you need to hire more pilots,'" the employee added.

'You Can't Do It Alone'
Another challenge is finding adequately serviced planes for any new pilots to fly.

Russia allotted 300 billion rubles ($3.5 billion) from its Sovereign Wealth Fund in 2023 to transfer the leases of 169 aircraft from Western lessors to an agency run by Rosaviatsia, the Interfax news agency reported.

But sanctions that have complicated access to spare parts and skilled repairs mean that often foreign planes go without or rely on the "cannibalization" of parts for maintenance, RFE/RL reported in 2023.

The promised Russian substitutes for these jets have not yet arrived.

The state-controlled United Aircraft Corporation's deliveries of Superjets and MS-21s have been postponed from 2024 until at least 2025.

Some experts doubt the planes will appear even then.

"The global production of airplanes is built on complex international chains of cooperation. You can't do it on the spur of the moment and alone," commented one Russian airline industry source.

That means that now not only are there not enough pilots overall, but "you have pilots for the promised Russian planes who have nothing to fly," the expert said.

'Pay Competitive Salaries'
Those pilots who do have something to fly have not seen their wages indexed for inflation, which is now at 9.13 percent, according to the Central Bank of Russia.

A Russian commercial pilot's salary tops out at 350,000 rubles ($3,800) per month, according to one Russian airline-security specialist. But that's the pay for "the captain of a big Boeing with long work experience and who flies the limit of 90 hours a month," the specialist said. "Everyone else, and they're the majority, receives less."

That maximum salary ranks beneath the lowest annual salary ($50,000) included in a 2024 analysis of worldwide pilot salaries by Simple Flying, an aviation news site.

To find better pay -- and better working conditions, with adequate time for rest and vacation -- both pilots and crews are leaving, industry employees said.

Airlines in the Persian Gulf offer pilots salaries over twice as much as they can earn in Russia, noted the airline-security specialist.

An Aeroflot flight attendant mentioned acquaintances who left Aeroflot and its discount airline Pobeda for the United Arab Emirates' budget carriers FlyDubai and Air Arabia.

"Guys I know are flying in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, and a lot of other places," the flight attendant added.

One Aviatorshchina commentator observed that to get pilots to return to Aeroflot, the company needs "to pay them competitive salaries, and that means pay other employees too."

Failing to do so, another commentator added, could mean that Aeroflot could by December run out of pilots who have not used up their maximum yearly quota of 900 flight hours.

The Aeroflot employee cited above believes Russian carriers will hire new pilots to bolster the airline's "efficiency" but whether Aeroflot can afford to do so is uncertain.

Sky-High Costs
In July, Aeroflot announced its first profit since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine -- 42.2 billion rubles ($470 million) for the second quarter of the 2024 financial year, Kommersant reported.

In a July 30 press release, Aeroflot attributed that profit to an increase in demand but conceded its expenses have also increased.

Aeroflot's expenses for fuel, maintenance, repairs, and spare parts have more than tripled since the second quarter of 2023 to nearly 33 billion rubles ($367 million), according to Kommersant.

Russian jet-fuel prices have increased by 30 percent since March 2022, SPIMEX, the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange, reported.

Over the long term, flights to so-called friendly countries -- China, India, and Turkey, for instance -- cannot compensate for the revenues lost from more profitable long-haul routes to the United States or European Union that disappeared after February 2022, the newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe reported in April.

And the flyover fees that, before the pandemic, supplied Aeroflot with one-third of its annual pre-tax earnings -- some $500 million to $800 million, according to Novaya Gazeta Europe --have largely vanished.

Higher ticket prices that are up by 25 percent since 2023 to the equivalent of $77 per 1,000 kilometers, according to the news site Vedomosti, cannot make up the difference.

Meanwhile, the government's plans to boost domestic plane production may be reconsidered, Kommersant reported in early August. And the government has no plans to again purchase the leases of additional Western planes, Transportation Minister Roman said in late July, state-run RIA Novosti reported.

"In the current situation, it won't be possible to maintain the flight readiness of Western airplanes for long," commented another airline-security specialist. Without enough flight-ready large airplanes and new aircraft, "even the mid-term outlook," he said, is "bleak."

Aeroflot claims it will use its profits to cover its growing expenses, but it did not include higher salaries for pilots and crews among these outlays.

Even if it opts for a major price hike -- an option downplayed by Transportation Minister Starovoyt in July -- "there will be no money left for higher pilot salaries and improving work conditions," the airline-security specialist warned. "So pilots will continue to flee."

It is reported that 8 Ukrainian stormtroopers captured 16 Russian servicemen of the 9th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade. Before being deployed to the brigade, it was the 9th Separate Marine Regiment of the so-called “People’s Militia” of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic”.

Ukrainian soldiers recall being amazed at the number of Russian POWs evacuated by a Ukrainian Kozak armored vehicle under fire.

Three Russians still did not manage to surrender, two, as one of the Ukrainian stormtroopers recalls, were killed under tank fire, and one more—immediately at the entrance to the grain elevator.

At the beginning of August, Militarnyi reported that soldiers of the 53rd Mechanized Brigade conducted successful counteroffensive actions in New York town, Donetsk region.

The president said that he could not disclose all the goals and results of the operation, but one of them was to replenish stocks of Russian prisoners of war who can be exchanged for Ukrainian POWs in Russia.

The estimates of Russian captives, taken by Ukraine during the Kursk Oblast, ranging from several hundred to 2,000. Ukraine declined to provide a full number of Russian captives taken during the ongoing operation following the Kyiv Independent's request.

On Aug. 10, the Russian government announced a "counter-terrorist operation" in Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod oblasts, which border Ukraine, and began evacuations in these regions, including to Russian-occupied areas in Zaporizhzhia Oblast and Crimea.

This shift underscores the adaptability of Ukrainian forces, who have demonstrated a remarkable ability to adjust their tactics to the evolving nature of the war.

One key enabler of Ukrainian operations is the increased use of technology and intelligence. Real-time intelligence, likely gathered from local sources, drone surveillance, and signals intelligence, has been critical in identifying targets and planning missions. Drones are now a force multiplier for Ukrainian special operations forces ranging in the Russian rear areas, enabling them to conduct reconnaissance, assess damage, and even deliver precision strikes.

The element of surprise has also been pivotal. The unit's forces have demonstrated a high level of operational security and discipline, successfully infiltrating deep into Russian territory, executing missions, and exfiltrating without detection. As the Russian-Ukrainian border was protected mainly by second and third-rate Russian conscripts and domestic security forces, Ukrainian troopers had incredible latitude compared to conditions in Eastern Ukraine. This surprise not only maximizes the impact of their operations but also minimizes risk to the operatives involved.

This resurgence of elite unit behind-the-lines operations has broader implications for the conflict.

First, it underscores the importance of unconventional warfare in the current phase of the war. As both sides continue to adapt their strategies, this will be crucial.

Second, such operations highlight the vulnerability of Russian rear areas, even those deep within their own territory. This could force Russia to reallocate resources to protect these areas, potentially weakening their frontline positions and giving Ukrainian forces an advantage.

Finally, successful elite unit operations could have a significant psychological impact on both Russian forces and the civilian population. For Russian soldiers, the realization that they are vulnerable even within their own borders is already causing a precipitous decline in morale. Hundreds of Russian troops have readily surrendered to the advancing Ukrainians. And for the Russian public, such attacks could undermine confidence in the government’s ability to protect the country, increasing domestic pressure on the Kremlin to seek a resolution to the conflict.

Following a decade-long battle, a substantial part of Crimean artifacts is now on display in Kyiv until the occupied peninsula is liberated, officials say.

After a lengthy legal struggle, the return of the so-called "Scythian gold" last year was, for Ukrainians, an important cultural milestone amid the ongoing decade-long war with Russia.

The artifacts originated from four Crimean museums—Bakhchysarai, Kerch, Simferopol, and Sevastopol—and were exhibited at the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam in February 2014, when Russian troops moved in to occupy the peninsula and its museums.

The artifacts were stuck in legal limbo, with now-occupied museums demanding the return of the items, whereas Ukraine attempted to return its cultural heritage home.

After nearly ten years, a collection of 565 artifacts, or 2,111 items, was finally returned to Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The items shown in the Treasury of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine have been digitized, a practice used by many Ukrainian museums to preserve the cultural heritage amid Russia's near-daily missile attacks.

"This (the return) is not only a museum matter but a matter for the entire country. It is important for future steps. This exhibition is about the past, but it is actually a bridge to the future," said archaeologist Yurii Polidovych, a leading researcher at the museum.

Scythian gold
Known as "Scythian gold," most of the artifacts aren't actually made of precious metals. The majority of the items are made of limestone, bronze, clay, iron, wood, and other materials.

These artifacts cannot be attributed to the Scythians alone. They were used by various nomadic peoples who lived on the peninsula from approximately the 5th century BCE to the 7th century AD, such as the Sarmatians, Goths, and Huns.

The very definition — "Scythian gold" — was largely made up by the media, experts say.

The entire collection is estimated at about 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million), a modest price for the one-of-a-kind artifacts.

Many of the items were found in necropolises, large city cemeteries. The most precious items were retrieved from the Ust-Alma necropolis, in southwest Crimea — ancient lacquer jewelry boxes made some 2,000 years ago in China.

"Each of the items tells its own story about the ancient people who lived in Crimea. These treasures are not about price tags, but about value, something that matters for spirituality, culture, and history," Polidovych told the Kyiv Independent.

Years-long battle
The battle for the Crimean artifacts was long, gaining national attention in the process.

Four Ukrainian museums in Crimea, now under Russian control, filed a lawsuit with the Amsterdam District Court demanding the return of the artifacts to the occupied peninsula. Kyiv demanded that the treasures be handed over to the owner of each exhibit, meaning Ukraine.

The court battle lasted for nine years, with the artifacts remaining in Amsterdam for the duration of the legal process.

"The European judiciary got trapped. They began to sort national legislation and European legislation. But there was a clear question: how will these (artifacts) be taken to Crimea from Amsterdam?" Evelina Kravchenko, a senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, told the Kyiv Independent.

In 2016, the Dutch court ruled that the Crimean artifacts should be transferred to Kyiv, but the Russian-controlled museums appealed. After a dragged-on trial and a rejected Russian appeal, the final decision in favor of Ukraine was reached only in 2023, as Russia was waging an all-out war against Ukraine.

"The current decision is one of strategic importance for the future of things that enter Europe from Ukraine illegally. In particular, from Crimea, the things that can be illegally exported by Russia, private individuals, and so on," Kravchenko said.

Polidovych agrees that the decision was crucial.

"The most important thing in this case is that it recognized Crimea as a part of Ukraine, and the cultural and historical heritage of Crimea is part of the common cultural space of Ukraine," said Polidovych.

Ukraine's debt for storing the exhibits in the Dutch museum was waived. Despite Russia's ongoing full-scale war, the artifacts were returned to Ukraine in November 2023.

Heritage at risk
As of 2014, the Crimean museums had over 930,000 items belonging to the Museum Fund of Ukraine, according to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine.

Yet, the artifacts brought back from the Netherlands are the only archaeological treasures returned to Ukraine-controlled territories since 2014.

Approximately 1.5 million museum artifacts remain in Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, acting Culture Minister Rostyslav Karandieiev said.

Attempts to destroy or appropriate Ukrainian cultural heritage have been a Russian policy for centuries, and the attacks on museums and cultural sites became a hallmark of Moscow's all-out war. According to the Culture Ministry, at least 1,085 cultural heritage sites in Ukraine have been damaged by Russian forces as of early July.

Exhibits from Russian-looted museums in the occupied parts of Ukraine's south were taken to Crimea, while cultural items from the occupied peninsula, such as paintings and sculptures, are being transferred to Russia.

"This is not a mass phenomenon yet, although requests from Russian museums to take museum items out of Crimea have become much more frequent recently," Kravchenko told the Kyiv Independent.

Over the years, Russia has excavated huge areas in Crimea and appropriated the found artifacts. It also demolished several cultural heritage sites that have been around.

Moscow destroyed the UNESCO-listed city of Chersonesus, an ancient Greek colony founded over 2,500 years ago, located within the city limits of occupied Sevastopol, replacing the original sights with new buildings.

"It will be possible to return (stolen cultural items) only after significant change depending on how the war ends, what kind of agreement will be signed, and who will sign it. If they end up on Russia's territory, it will be very difficult to bring them back," Kravchenko said.

Telegram (en andere sociale media) is meer voor jongeren. En Telegram zit natuurlijk ook ramvol met Pro-Russische kanalen.
