Ukraine's deputy energy minister Oleksandr Kheilo was arrested on corruption charges, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported on Aug. 12.
While the SBU said only that a deputy energy minister had been arrested and did not mention Kheilo by name, Ukrainska Pravda soon confirmed that he was the individual in question.
The official portal of Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers later reported that Kheilo had been dismissed from his position.
According to the SBU, Kheilo allegedly demanded bribes from representatives of a state-owned coal company to facilitate the transfer of mining equipment from near the frontline hotspot of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast, where fighting is currently ongoing, and then transport it to the Lviv-Volyn region in western Ukraine.
Kheilo allegedly involved three other accomplices in his corruption scheme—an independent energy trader, the head of an energy company in Mykolaiv Oblast, and the head of a mining company in Donetsk Oblast.
The SBU documented several tranches of bribe payments, and the individuals in question were reportedly caught "red-handed."
The four conspirators have been charged with receiving a bribe and face up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
In a post on its official website, the Energy Ministry said it was cooperating with law enforcement authorities to "ensure an objective investigation and establish all the circumstances of the offense."

There are traces of destruction at the Sudzha gas metering station, which came under the control of Ukraine during the Kursk operation at the beginning of August 2024, reported Radio Svoboda.
Satellite photos available to the outlet show that some of the damage appeared between August 9 and 10, and some between August 10 and 11.
The Sudzha gas metering station is located close to the Russian-Ukrainian border, and therefore came under the control of Ukraine from the very beginning of the operation, although this was confirmed only on August 8.
The photo from August 11 shows that one of the administrative buildings of the station, as well as one of the platforms where the equipment is installed, was almost completely destroyed.
At the same time, on Monday morning, Gazprom claimed that it continues pumping gas through Sudzha to Europe in the usual volume.
Since May 2022 , Ukraine has stopped gas transit through the Sokhranivka gas metering station as a result of the Russian occupation of the northern part of Luhansk Oblast. After that, the transit takes place only through the Sudzha gas station, which is the only working point of entry of Russian gas into the territory of Ukraine.
Gas futures in Europe reacted to the events in Kursk Oblast by increasing to levels not seen since December 2023.

Soldiers of the Ukrainian Defense Forces received a batch of attack drones.
The KOLO Charitable Foundation handed over the UAV and published the relevant photos on its Facebook page.
The foundation emphasized that this was the largest batch of valuable drones for the entire period of the charitable foundation’s work.
These attack UAVs are already in the hands of Ukrainian defenders.

While Ukrainian officials and military command have so far not officially commented on the operation in Kursk Oblast, media have been forced to rely on limited and questionable information circulated by Russian Telegram channels and videos of Ukrainian forces that often surface anonymously.
In these conditions, it has so far remained unclear not only what territory Ukrainian forces hold, but whether they plan to dig in and fortify a new front line inside Russia, or eventually return across the border.
Although reinforcements sent by Moscow have begun to arrive on the battlefield, Ukraine has reportedly continued to advance farther into Kursk Oblast.
Russian authorities have been forced to announce widening civilian evacuation measures in a number of districts bordering Ukraine.
Smirnov told Putin that 121,000 people had so far been evacuated and another 59,000 needed to leave.

The military successfully destroyed Russian infantry in the Volchansk direction. UAV operators from the 71st Separate Jager Brigade discovered two Russian trucks in a settlement, both filled with personnel.

The 71st Separate Jager Brigade
The 71st Separate Ranger Brigade was established right after the onset of the large-scale Russian invasion.
Its first units went into combat two months later. Since then, the brigade has been actively engaging Russian forces in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions. The brigade's motto, "Immitis"—meaning ruthless—has been demonstrated by its soldiers time and again. Initially sporting chevrons featuring a boar, and later a Semargl, the brigade has instilled fear in their enemy, with instances of Russian soldiers abandoning their positions upon learning they faced this ranger brigade. Six months after its formation, the unit was incorporated into the Airborne Assault Forces, and its fighters have been active in the most intense areas of the front. The 71st Brigade has earned distinction in the battles for Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, Robotyne, and Avdiivka.

The University of Warsaw confirmed those detained were students and a lecturer who were in Nigeria for a study trip organized by the university, according to the Polish state news agency PAP.
The students “found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Polish deputy foreign minister Andrzej Szejna told PAP. The Poles were not carrying any flags, Szejna said, but added, “It seems they were taking photos and this had been interpreted in this way.”
The Polish foreign affairs ministry said on X that its officials in Nigeria are establishing “the exact circumstances” of the incident with Nigerian authorities.

Ukrainian handlers with their highly trained dogs are to be deployed to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance across the country in a project.
16 Belgian Malinois will be the first technical survey dogs to be deployed in Ukraine. Together with their eight Ukrainian female handlers, they underwent extensive training in Cambodia for five months before returning to Ukraine.
The new initiative is funded by a ¤2 million grant from the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI).
