They made the announcement today.

The US Department of Justice, in conjunction with their counterparts in the Netherlands and Canada, has seized the domains and searched the Twitter (X) social media accounts of a Russian bot operation spreading pro-Putin propaganda.

A statement from DOJ said that the bot farm was being operated by the Russian state media company RT using AI to spread Russian disinformation in the US on Twitter:

"The social media bot farm used elements of AI to create fictitious social media profiles — often purporting to belong to individuals in the United States — which the operators then used to promote messages in support of Russian government objectives, according to affidavits unsealed today."

The statement went on to note that X has suspended all the bot accounts for violating the company's terms of service.

“Russia intended to use this bot farm to disseminate AI-generated foreign disinformation, scaling their work with the assistance of AI to undermine our partners in Ukraine and influence geopolitical narratives favorable to the Russian government. The FBI is committed to working with our partners and deploying joint, sequenced operations to strategically disrupt our most dangerous adversaries and their use of cutting-edge technology for nefarious purposes.”

The DOJ said that the operation began in April 2022. Most of the posts made by bot accounts posing as American citizens were replies to tweets seeking to justify or defend Putin's actions in Ukraine. There were two examples contained in the affidavit:



A total of 968 Twitter accounts were shut down in this operation. While this is a positive development, there are still thousands of obvious Russian and other foreign bot accounts operating on Twitter. Many of these accounts pay for blue check verification so their replies go to the top of most posts under Musk's algorithm.

Virtually every pro-Zelensky post is swarmed by blue-checked bots posting Russian disinformation. My recent post where Zelensky challenged Trump to reveal his secret plan to end the war received hundreds of replies from them. Almost all of these replies either posted the fake story that Zelensky's wife recently purchased a $4.5 million Bugatti in France with US aid money, or that Zelensky was a cocaine addict. All used the same terminology, indicating an obvious bot farm operation.

Of course, there are plenty of legit MAGA and pro-Trump accounts with huge followings on Twitter who continue to spread Russian disinformation for Putin. They have been subjected to so much Russian propaganda from influencers and right-wing media that they operate in a dystopian online world of dangerous and destabilizing un-American and anti-democratic fiction.

If Putin can use these bot farms to get Trump elected, then that will go a long way towards ending the war in Ukraine with a Russian victory, as Trump clearly intends to cut off aid. If Trump attempts to pull the US out of NATO, as many of his advisors and supporters have advocated, he will help Putin fulfill his lifelong dream.

Achieving victory using bot farms is a lot cheaper and easier than doing it on the battlefield with missiles, aircraft, tanks, and blood.

As reported by Ukrnform, on the night of 10 July, an air alert was declared in a number of regions of Ukraine due to the threat of attack drones.

According to the published videos, the strikes were carried out using black-painted Bober drones.

One of the drones landed on the field, probably due to a technical malfunction. To overcome air defense systems in the night sky, the solution is to paint the fuselages of attack drones black.

New Development In Black Sea, Russian Navy Using Base In Georgia

A Russian Navy Ship has been observed in Ochamchire, in the Abkhazia separatist region. The Black Sea port may become an important base for the Russian Navy, acting as a safe refuge from the Ukrainian surface drones. It is officially Georgian territory however, making the move politically bold, and complicated.

In a new development, a Russian Navy ship normally based in Novorossiysk, has docked in the port of Ochamchire in Georgia. The port is in the Abkhazia region which is controlled by Russia. The local Russian-backed administration has claimed that the Russian Navy would establish a permanent base at the port.

The base is already home to a number of small FSB (Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation) patrol boats. This is the first significant naval ship visit observed since the claims.

The move is controversial since the port is in Georgia, which implies bringing Georgia into the Russo-Ukraine War. Russia could attempt to use the port as a refuge from attacks. And they could even a safe base to launch combat missions from. Ukraine’s options will be complicated because it is located on Georgian territory, despite being controlled by breakaway Abkhazia.

Unannounced Deployment May Be First Of Many
The ship is a Project 22870 support ship. It was observed docked in its home port of Novorossiysk on June 28. It was then missing on July 1, and observed in Ochamchire on July 4 and 5.

On July 3 Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) attacked Novorossiysk. Their Magura uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) struck the pier near to where the ship is normally docked when it is there. One hypothesis therefore, is that the ship was at sea and sought refuse from the attack in Ochamchire.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022 Russia’s fleet dominated the Black Sea. It’s primary base was Sevastopol on Crimea. Since then it has lost a significant number of warships, and Sevastopol is vulnerable to USVs, mines, aerial drones and missiles. Consequently the majority of high value naval assets have been moved east to Novorossiysk. Here too, they ate under threat however. Ochamchire could thus offer a politically complicated hiding place from Ukrainian forces.

Whatever the exact reasoning, the ship is active in the Black Sea fleet and taking part in the Russo-Ukraine War.

Although the port is relatively small, it could easily host several larger warships. These could include landing ships or frigates. The larger ships can be docked stern-on to the key, as this one is, to increase the number of berths. Submarines have been based there in Soviet times.

Important Naval Asset In Black Sea
Although the Project 22870 ships are termed Rescue Tugs, they can be thought of as general purpose support ships. They often accompany combatants and have been known to carry missile systems during the ongoing war. This is the sister ship of the Vasily Bekh (SB-739) which was sunk by Ukrainian anti-ship missiles near Snake Island on June 17, 2022. At the time Vasily Bekh was carrying an SA-15 Gauntlet (‘Tor’) air defense missile system.

The ship in Ochamchire appears to have a vehicle or container on the aft deck which is consistent with SA-22 Greyhound (‘Pantsir’) missiles. Naval News has not been able to positively identify this object however.

There are three active in the Black Sea, SB-742, Professor Nikolay Muru, and Captain Guryev. A fourth, Vasily Bekh (SB-739), was sunk by Ukraine in 2022. We have not been able to positively identify which of the remaining three it is in Ochamchire.

It remains to be seen whether more Russian Navy ships will follow. Possibly the reaction of the Georgian government, and the international community, will be a factor in this. Analysts will likely be watching developments closely.

“This is one of the main railway lines in the region, connecting Russia and the Donetsk region of Ukraine, and is actively used for transporting military equipment and personnel to the combat zone,” the report said.

Atesh announced that the number of partisan sabotage acts will increase daily.

“Russian military personnel should not relax for a minute; our revenge for your criminal actions will be horrific,” the report read.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian partisans reported that one of their agents blew up a railroad track near the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, about 1,600 kilometers (995 miles) from Ukraine. The track was being used to transport North Korean ammunition for Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

An Atesh spokesperson told Kyiv Post that a Russian agent working for the partisan movement carried out the act of sabotage; furthermore, that he refused to be rewarded because he works for ideological reasons.

New Zealand provides Ukraine with a new $10 million aid package. Part of the funds will be used for military assistance.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko said that Christopher Luxon, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, announced the new package.

The funds will be allocated for humanitarian aid ($6.12 million) and military aid ($3.68 million).

The military aid includes $2.45 million for the Drone Coalition led by the UK and Latvia and $1.23 for Ukraine’s military medical needs.

The country has already provided a total of NZ$130 million in aid to Kyiv (approximately $79.5 million).

In the coming days, New Zealand will also announce new sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities over its war against Ukraine.

In February 2024, the country provided $25.9 million in aid to Ukraine and continued to train the Ukrainian military.

Over the past two years, New Zealand’s servicemen have been in Europe and the United Kingdom, working with partners to support Ukraine.

“The Government is pleased to announce that the deployment of qualified trainers in support of Ukraine will continue until June 2025. Up to 97 military personnel will continue to train Ukrainian soldiers, as well as provide intelligence, communications, and logistical support,” New Zealand officials shared in February.

New Zealand instructors are training Ukrainian artillerymen, who are being taught how to use 105-mm L119 howitzers.

New Zealand provided Ukraine with gun sights and a small amount of ammunition for training purposes.

In 2022, New Zealand sent a C130 Hercules aircraft and personnel to Europe to provide Ukraine with transportation and logistical support.

As a result of Russia’s actions, nine Baltic states, namely Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden, will jointly purchase naval mines.

Pistorius was referring to an incident in May when Estonia blamed Russian border guards for removing navigation buoys from the Estonian side of the Narva River separating the two countries.

The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board details that the Russian Border Guard removed twenty-four floating signs around three in the morning on Thursday, May 23.

“To that end, we need the necessary capabilities for deterrence and defence, one of them being naval mines,” the German Defense Minister added.

Russia has significant military capabilities at St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, and NATO sees shipping lanes as well as undersea cables at risk in case of a conflict.

Joint procurement of naval mines from a single manufacturer will reduce procurement costs and improve repair, logistics and maintenance capabilities.

Militarnyi previously reported that in 2021, the Estonian Navy had already replenished its stockpile of naval mines.

Naval mines called PM16 (Blocker) manufactured by the Finnish company Forcit Defense were purchased.

Details: The agreement, posted on the website of the Office of the President, consists of twenty chapters that specify Luxembourg's support for Ukraine in the context of countering full-scale Russian invasion.

Among other things, Luxembourg is to provide military assistance and support to Ukraine over the ten years of the agreement "at the same pace" as in 2022 (at the time of signing the agreement, the country has allocated �80 million since the beginning of the year).

The agreement also reinforces Luxembourg's leading role in the coalition to build Ukraine's IT capabilities and its commitment to support Kyiv in the fields of satellite technology, intelligence and surveillance.

This is the twenty-second security agreement Ukraine has signed with its partners, the previous one was signed with Poland during Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Warsaw.

On Thursday, alongside the NATO summit, the United States will host a meeting of states that have pledged their security assistance to Ukraine.

Recent polls reveal that 65% of Ukrainians believe security agreements with allies are beneficial, but their expectations of them are low.

Politico also writes that on Wednesday, July 10, EU ambassadors will discuss the Hungarian presidency and Orb�n’s recent trips at their meeting. Another diplomat said that an upcoming meeting of EU ambassadors is being discussed, adding that “there is very clear political disapproval” of Hungary’s actions.

Tensions will continue to rise during Hungary’s presidency, the publication writes, as Budapest is blocking EU funding for weapons that Ukraine is supposed to receive.

The Ka-52, also known as Alligator, is a large attack helicopter with counter-rotating rotors and no tail rotor. This is a rather interesting aircraft designed for close air support and some old-fashioned ground and pound close to the frontlines. It hovers relatively close to the battlefield and attacks enemies with various rockets, bombs, or a 30mm autocannon. In this war, the Ka-52s need to stay close to the defenders of Ukraine, Russians have already lost a great number of these aircraft. And it’s for the better – Ukrainians are reducing the number of Russian combat helicopters with great efficiency.

But the strange thing is that Russians are now bragging that they armed the Ka-52 with the Kh-59/69 cruise missile. The Kh-59 has a range of up to 290 km, while the heavily upgraded Kh-69, which is still closely related to the Kh-59, has a range of about 400 km. This is rather strange, since the launch of cruise missiles is not normally the task of the Alligator or other helicopters. Such missiles are normally launched by Su-34, Su-35, MiG-31, Su-30MK and similar jets. Russians did not provide evidence that they managed to do this. Except for one video, which is hard to judge anything from.

The answer is simple – the surprise factor. An alarm sounds in Ukraine every time a Su-34, MiG-31 or any other aircraft capable of carrying cruise missiles takes off in Russia. These are fairly large aeroplanes that require good runways, which makes them fairly easy to spy on. Meanwhile, the Ka-52 takes off and lands vertically, perhaps even from a flat grass field. It is much more difficult for the defenders of Ukraine to spot the take-off of helicopters, and no one expects cruise missile launches from them. In addition, at least in theory, the Ka-52 can launch cruise missiles from much closer to the front line and thus deliver deeper strikes.

It could also be that the Russians are just looking for ways to employ their remaining Ka-52s. Using them close to the front line is dangerous now because the Russian helicopters are suffering a lot of losses. The Ka-52 can stay very low, closely following the terrain of the area and hiding from radars of medium and long-range air defence systems. Adaptation of cruise missiles in helicopters seems to allow Russians to continue using the Ka-52 without putting them in too much danger.

Sweden was ready to transfer Gripen multi-role fighter jets to Ukraine, but Kyiv refused them, deciding that having two aircraft systems simultaneously – both F-16 and Gripen – was too much, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstr�m told in an interview with Voice of America.

Responding to a question about why Sweden decided to suspend providing Gripen to Ukraine, Billstr�m said: "This decision was made because Ukraine concluded that having two aircraft systems simultaneously – both F-16 and Gripen – was too much."

He explained that when it comes to aircraft, it's not just about receiving them and training pilots. These are complex systems, and implementing two of them simultaneously would be too difficult.

"But this does not mean that Sweden is not open to continuing with the Gripens if and when the F-16 program is completed. Again, this is Ukraine's decision, not the Swedish government's," the official said.

The Danish government will fund the production of 18 Ukrainian 2S22 Bohdana wheeled howitzers to be put into service with the Defense Forces.

The Ministry of Defense of Denmark announced this.

The Ministry of Defense said that the government has paid to produce a division of 18 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine, which will be transferred to the Ukrainian military “within the coming months.”

The choice of this particular artillery system as military aid was made by representatives of Denmark based on an official recommendation from the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine.

In April of this year, Troels Lund Poulsen, Minister of Defense, initiated cooperation with Ukraine and placed orders for the production of weapons directly with the Ukrainian defense industry.

“When I was in Ukraine this spring to visit a number of defense companies, I saw the opportunities to support Ukraine by purchasing directly through the Ukrainian defense industry. In this way, we ensure that the equipment that Ukrainians need on the front line can be manufactured and delivered nearby. This provides some obvious logistical advantages while helping build up Ukraine’s defense industry. This is where Ukrainian-made artillery systems play a central role as a pilot project,” Poulsen said.

Denmark’s order of Ukrainian-made heavy weapons for the needs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces was the first such precedent. This was part of an official agreement between the two countries on defense cooperation signed in June this year.

“I hope that more countries will choose the Danish procurement model in Ukraine. The capabilities of Ukrainians to produce equipment are greater than the funding they have now. Therefore, there is a great potential for such agreements to produce more equipment in Ukraine and at the same time help build up the defense industry in Ukraine,” Poulsen noted.

According to official statements, in May of this year, the Ukrainian defense industry reached the production rate of 10 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers per month.

“The state enters into serious, long-term contracts with our enterprises, which provide predictability, the ability to recruit people and attract investment. This month, our industry is producing 10 Bohdanas for the first time, and in May and beyond – even more,” President Zelensky reported on April 18.

The latest versions of the 155 mm wheeled howitzers come with a shell loader. The chassis is currently based on Tatra Phoenix 8�8 or Tatra T815 trucks, which are donated in Ukraine, with a Czech Puma L2 Long armored cabin.

Last December, it was reported that the Ukrainian defense industry was developing a trailer version of the 155 mm Bohdana howitzer.

To solve this problem, the Ministry of Strategic Industries launched the ZBROYARI initiative, which offers Western partners to purchase Ukrainian weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“In a few months of ‘bombarding’ partners with proposals to contract Ukrainian plants, Ukraine has agreed to allocate $675 million from various countries. There will be even more,” the publication reported. Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, the United States, and the European Union have already joined the initiative.

Active work on the “ZBROYARI: Manufacturing Freedom” project was launched at the end of last year. It immediately received a global goal of accumulating $10 billion in arms contracting from Ukrainian manufacturers by the end of the year.

At the end of last year, the Danish government was presented with proposals to finance the production of Ukrainian products for the first time. The agreements resulted in a $170 million Danish order for Ukrainian arms manufacturers, which includes 18 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers.

Canada became the second participant in the initiative. The Ministry of Strategic Industries told Ekonomichna Pravda that it all started with a visit to Ukraine by Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair. At that time, the country allocated $95 million to purchase 800 Canadian SkyRanger R70 drones as part of the Drone Coalition.

“We met him (Bill Blair), thanked him for the drones, but said we wanted to show him something. We made a comparison chart with the cost and characteristics of the SkyRanger R70 and its Ukrainian counterparts, which are several times cheaper. They offered to buy a test batch of Ukrainian drones,” the source at the Ministry of Strategic Industries shared.

Canada was interested in the proposal, and its government agreed to allocate $2.1 million for Ukrainian drones. The Ministry of Strategic Industries notes that agreements with Canada and other countries are not final, and Ukraine will do everything to expand funding programs.

Later, Ukrainian officials managed to involve representatives of the Netherlands in the initiative, successfully presenting the capabilities of defense companies to them. As a result, the country agreed to allocate �17.5 million for the purchase of Ukrainian maritime drones and allocated �20 million for FPV drones, some of which can be used by domestic enterprises.

The real challenge for Ukraine was to get Germany or the UK involved. The main problem was competition with local defense giants already heavily involved in arms supplies.

However, Ukraine has found a way out of the situation. This year, Ukroboronprom created a joint venture with the German concern Rheinmetall, which will produce the latest Lynx infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense does not have the money to purchase them, but according to Kamyshin, they will be produced at German expense.

It was possible to agree on money for weapons with the British government. So far, it is about financing the repair of L119 howitzers at Ukrainian facilities. The agreement was facilitated by the British company BAE Systems, which is the developer of these artillery systems.

However, the primary source of funding at this stage of the initiative’s development should be the European Union, which will allocate �400 million for the project. According to the Ministry of Strategic Industries Head, this money should be allocated from the �1.4 billion in profits from frozen Russian assets.

According to Ekonomichna Pravda, they also plan to raise funds from the United States. They will try to get it by contracting orders at the facilities of American companies in Ukraine. A potential source of funds could be the US Defense Enterprise Fund worth $2 billion, part of which could be used for orders for the Ukrainian defense industry.

The authorities in Tatarstan, a republic in Russia’s central Volga region, are offering financial incentives to residents who successfully persuade relatives or acquaintances to enlist in the Russian military, Telegram channel Govorit NeMoskva reported on Thursday.

According to a message posted by one military recruitment website on Tuesday, anybody bringing in somebody who signs up at a military enlistment centre is eligible to collect a “finder’s fee” of 50,000 rubles (�525). Though that sum was subsequently revised to 100,000 rubles (�1,050), the financial incentive remained for anyone instrumental in convincing an individual to sign a contract with the military in Tatarstan.

Govorit NeMoskva said the message had been advertised on local forums, newspaper websites, state media and government websites.

The authorities in Tatarstan have already increased the lump sum payment offered to newly enlisting recruits. Combined with other payments from the local authorities, a new recruit in the republic now stands to earn some 1.5 million rubles (�15,725) in signing bonuses, one of the highest amounts in the country.

Earlier this year, Tatarstan launched a new youth employment programme to encourage those aged 14 and up to work in the defence industry, state-affiliated business daily Kommersant reported in April, adding that the authorities were aiming to make it easier for minors, especially those from “families in a socially precarious situation”, to join the workforce.

“We are aware that the Kyiv regime and its Western allies intend to make up for the failed peace summit in Switzerland in mid-June … and hold another similar event,” Galuzin said.

He said Russia would not accept what he called “the ultimatums” set out in the peace formula put forward by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and noted that while no location had yet been chosen for the summit, “geography doesn’t matter, whereas content does”.

Ukraine is hoping to organise a second peace summit ahead of the US presidential election in November, to which it plans to invite Russia, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

The two-day Summit on Peace in Ukraine held near the Swiss city of Lucerne in June was seen as a partial success, though neither Russia nor China attended and 12 of the 92 countries present, including Russia’s BRICS partners in attendance, chose not to sign the final communiqu�.

On the eve of the summit, Vladimir Putin listed his own preconditions for peace at a briefing with senior Russian Foreign Ministry officials, stipulating that Ukraine agree to be neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear, demilitarised and “denazified”. Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior Zelensky advisor, called the proposals “a complete sham” and “offensive to common sense”.

The commander of one of the Ukrainian crews of a tank company of the OPFOR special battalion has shown an incredible example of courage and bravery on the battlefield.

The Ukrainian military leadership has published a video to this effect.

It is known that during a combat mission, Ukrainian armored vehicles were hit by a Russian kamikaze drone.
The published video shows that the drone hit resulted in a fire.

However, the Ukrainian military officer, despite the huge risk to his life, immediately jumped outside and began to fight the flames that engulfed the tank.

There was a fire both outside and inside, but he didn’t lose his head for a second, grabbed fire extinguishers, got out of the tank, and dealt with the flames right on the move.

By taking such actions, the Ukrainian hero saved the lives of the crew and brought the tank back to its position in a serviceable condition.

Soldiers of the 68th Oleksa Dovbush Jaeger Brigade captured Russian T-80 and T-90M tanks in the area of the unit’s responsibility.

The brigade’s press service reported on this.

Ukrainian soldiers also captured a Russian BMP-2 IFV.

The brigade explained how they managed to do it:

“The tank crews managed to capture this “miracle of technology” in almost working order. The tank led a large-scale assault on the Russian invaders, which ended in a complete fiasco for them. The crew of the T-90 left their newest vehicle on the battlefield and simply ran away.”

This was preceded by an unsuccessful Russian assault, which the Ukrainian defenders defeated.

“Our mechanic-driver took a risk to get to the tank through the gray zone and returned back on it,” the brigade’s soldier shared about the capture of the latest Russian T-90M tank.

Our defenders did not stop there, and later, two more units of enemy armored vehicles were added to the list of trophies from that battle – a T-80 tank and a BMP-2, which were captured by soldiers of the 68th Jaeger Brigade.

“From now on, these trophies will ruthlessly destroy their previous owners!” they wrote about the tanks’ new assignments.

This equipment was probably captured during the brigade’s defensive battles in the Pokrovsk sector when the Russian soldiers engaged tanks and infantry fighting vehicles in assault operations. All armored vehicles were protected by special anti-drone “grills.”

Thanks to the coordinated actions of intelligence officers, artillerymen, anti-tank gunners, attack drone pilots, and sappers, 8 Russian tanks and 8 more infantry fighting vehicles were destroyed.

The nature of the explosions indicates that cluster munitions supplied by partners were used to destroy Russian manpower and armored vehicles.

Lithuania has announced a new military aid package that includes electronic warfare systems, ammunition, and drones.

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence announced this.

A shipment of weapons arrived in Ukraine on July 11. It includes ammunition for 5.56�45 mm rifles, anti-drone rifles, and military auxiliary equipment, including folding beds.

The ministry said that Lithuania had provided Ukraine with military assistance worth about �641 million. This year, assistance worth about �115 million has already been provided.

Throughout this time, the country donated 155 mm ammunition, M577 command post carriers, M113 armored personnel carriers, counter-drone systems, grenade launchers, and ammunition for infantry weapons, as well as other equipment and ammunition.

In particular, last month, a new batch of tracked armored vehicles arrived in the country to strengthen the Ukrainian Defense Forces’ demining capabilities.

At the end of June, Ukraine signed a security agreement with Lithuania, according to which Lithuania will seek to provide Ukraine with annual security and defense support worth 0.25% of GDP.

Lithuania will provide Ukraine with security assistance and modern military equipment in the land, air, maritime, space, and cyber-electromagnetic spheres.

Some of the Agreement’s provisions set out joint counteraction to hybrid threats and nuclear risks, strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure and promote cooperation in the field of intelligence.

In addition, Lithuania will potentially resume a military training mission in Ukraine. Also, it was reported in late June that Lithuania would help reform Ukrainian military education.

The Office of the President of Ukraine announced this.

The source says that the Russian provided the data through the HUR chatbot on the day of the attack, July 8 – his motivation is explained as being "shocked by the strike on a children's hospital."

The obtained documents relate to the operations of the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division based at Engels airfield – from this airfield, in particular, the occupiers regularly launch air strikes on Ukraine with Kh-101 missiles, the source noted.

A video circulating on social media allegedly shows Russian troops shooting a group of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) near the village of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia sector last month.

The Prosecutor General’s office has also launched an investigation into the Russian military’s February shooting of three Ukrainian POWs – again near the village of Robotyne.

DeepState analysts released video footage of that incident on Telegram on Feb. 20.

The footage, dated Feb. 18, shows Russian troops advancing from the south and seizing part of a stronghold, trapping three Ukrainian soldiers. It depicts these soldiers emerging from a trench and surrendering, only to be shot by the Russian forces after a brief pause.

Reports of the shooting of Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne initially surfaced at the end of last year.

A video came out on social media on Dec. 27 – again appearing to show Russian military personnel firing on captured Ukrainian soldiers.

Yury Belousov, a Prosecutor General's Office representative, said that this behavior by the Russian military in the Zaporizhzhia region seems to be a systematic pattern.

He cited previous instances where Ukrainians were also used as human shields.

A drone video published by Radio Svoboda on Dec. 13, shows Russian infantry forcing at least three unarmed Ukrainian POWs to advance in front of them, likely as human shields near Robotyne. One of the prisoners is shot dead in the video.

She said Russian authorities were “hiding” Navalny’s body in an attempt to disguise the cause of his death – “lying pathetically” and waiting for “traces of another of Putin’s Novichoks to disappear.”

The Kremlin rejected any allegations of involvement in Navalny’s death.

Reacting to the court’s decision on Tuesday, Navalnaya reiterated claims of Putin’s involvement in the death of her husband.

“His place is in prison, and not somewhere in The Hague, in a cozy cell with a TV, but in Russia – in the same colony and the same 2 by 3 meter cell in which he killed Alexey,” she said in a social media post.

In his Twitter (X), Volodymyr Zelenskyy called such a step “important for restoring respect for the UN Charter and international law.”

Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative, highlighted the dire situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. He condemned Russia’s intentional inclusion of the facility within its military strategy, emphasizing the potential for a catastrophic incident with far-reaching consequences.

“Radiation doesn’t respect borders,” Kyslytsya warned. Radioactive fallout, he explained, can travel vast distances, affecting regions far beyond the immediate vicinity of the plant.

The Ambassador expressed full support for the draft resolution, which aligns with the IAEA mandate and emphasized the importance of their seven key principles for nuclear safety and security.

Kyslytsya concluded by urging all nations to vote in favor of the resolution. “For the sake of future generations,” he stressed, “we have a responsibility to prevent the horrors of nuclear disasters from ever happening again.”

"As a result of the incident, the Russian deep-sea vehicle sustained damage that does not allow it to continue testing," military intelligence wrote on Telegram.

The AS-36 has reportedly been modernized at the shipyard in St. Petersburg since 2017. Russia is currently assessing the damage and time required to repair the vehicle, the agency said.

Russian officials have not reported the incident. The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims.

Ukraine's Navy said in June that the Russian anti-submarine ship Admiral Levchenko was on fire in the Barents Sea after an engine malfunctioned and caught fire.

Around 30% of Russia's Black Sea Fleet had been destroyed by Ukrainian forces as of December 2023, according to the Ukrainian military.

Still, it's not clear if Russia has consistently been rolling out its one-time payments to its wounded or its deceased soldiers' next-of-kin.

Reuters reported in June 2022 that some soldiers, including four servicemen interviewed by the outlet, were struggling to receive their compensation after sustaining battlefield injuries.

In November, Radio Free Europe's Russian investigative unit, Systema, found that multiple Russian contract soldiers and families of those killed were still not receiving their payments despite trying to acquire them.

In April, Ukraine published what it said was a recording of an intercepted call from a Russian soldier who claimed that Russia designated those killed as "missing in action" so it could deny full payouts to their families.

Ukraine claimed in June that Russia has suffered 515,000 casualties, while Moscow does not release regular updates on how many of its soldiers were killed or wounded.

Independent Russian outlet Mediazona, which tracks the names of those killed in the war, estimated in a July 5 update that between 106,000 to 140,000 Russian troops have died, including 39,000 this year.

Yearly cost of treating PTSD at 2% of budget, researchers say
Lattanzio and Stevens also estimated the cost of Russia treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among its servicemen, arriving at about $15,000 yearly for each patient treated.

They used cost figures from the US on its own PTSD treatment, adjusted them for purchasing power parity in Russia, and assumed that 500,000 Russian veterans would acquire some "sort of post-traumatic stress disorder" from the war.

In total, this amounts to a yearly 660 billion rubles, or $7.4 billion, to treat PTSD from the war, which is about 2% of Russia's total budget.

Russia plans to spend nearly a third of its total 2024 budget on defense, or about 10.8 trillion rubles, which is $122 billion.

That's nearly double the amount it spent on defense in 2023, and much of the funds are expected to flow toward weapons production.

Many observers say such a skew toward military expenditure indicates that Russia intends to fight out the Ukraine war for a prolonged period.

"By staking everything on rising military expenditure, the Kremlin is forcing the economy into the snare of perpetual war," wrote analysts from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's Russia and Eurasia Center.

On July 11, the US Air Force announced it is accelerating the development of a new weapon specifically designed to aid Ukraine in its fight against Russia. This “Extended-Range Attack Munition” (ERAM) is envisioned as a low-cost, rapidly deployable air-launched weapon with a range exceeding 250 nautical miles (288 miles).

Following initial interest from sixteen undisclosed companies after a January request for information (RFI), the Air Force has issued a follow-up RFI explicitly stating ERAM’s purpose: strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities.

The latest RFI outlines a phased procurement plan. The goal is to rapidly prototype and adapt a commercially available, autonomous, modular, and open-architecture vehicle capable of delivering affordable long-range strikes.

“This munition is pivotal for accelerating Ukraine’s capability to meet warfighter needs efficiently and provides an affordable mass weapon to be produced at scale,” the RFI states.

Minimum requirements for ERAM, as detailed earlier this year, include a 500-pound class munition equipped with a blast and fragmentation warhead effective against both open areas and armored targets. Additionally, ERAM requires a minimum speed of Mach 0.6 and a range exceeding 250 nautical miles. Notably, the document doesn’t specify whether the munition needs an onboard propulsion system. Finally, ERAM must be able to navigate without GPS and achieve at least a 50% success rate in landing within 33 feet of the target point.

This ERAM project is one of several Pentagon initiatives focused on developing new, low-cost, air-launched munitions. Earlier this year, the Navy released similar requirements for the “Multi-Mission Affordable Capacity Effector,” a smaller, more affordable weapon designed for F-35C fighter jets.

ISW suggests that during a private dinner with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin may have promised to return Indian volunteers fighting in Ukraine.

In Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Putin aimed to capture Kharkiv while the US Congress delayed a package of military aid to Ukraine.

The Russian-born woman, 40, was an army private working as an information systems technician with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for several years, the agencies said in a joint news conference on Friday.

She became an Australian citizen in 2016, and her Russian-born husband, 62, a self-employed laborer, obtained Australian citizenship in 2020, they added.

Australian Federal Police will allege the woman went to Russia without notifying Australian authorities while she was on long-term leave from the ADF last year.

“We allege that while she was in Russia, she instructed her husband, who remained in Australia, on how to log into her official work account from their Brisbane home,” Kershaw said.

“We allege her husband would access requested material and would send [it] to his wife in Russia. We allege they sought that information with the intention of providing it to Russian authorities.”

Kershaw said a key focus of the investigation is whether that information was handed over to Russian authorities. If it was, the charge could be upgraded to espionage.

The investigation will include how the woman obtained security clearance to access sensitive ADF material, and how she was able to bypass systems to apparently travel undetected to Russia.

“There was some misleading on her behalf of where she was allegedly at and what country,” Kershaw said.

It’s the first time an espionage offense has been used since new laws were introduced in 2018.

The charge of preparing for an espionage offense carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. An upgraded charge carries a maximum term of 25 years in prison to life.

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said the arrests demonstrated the strength of Australia’s national security culture, not its deficiency.

“The espionage threat is real. Multiple countries are seeking to steal Australia’s secrets. We cannot be naive and we cannot be complacent,” he said.

South Korea is beginning the mass production of a low-cost laser weapon that has successfully shot down small drones during testing, the country’s key arms agency said Thursday.

The laser weapon, called Block-I, “can precisely strike small unmanned aerial vehicles and multicopters at close range,” a news release from South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said.

The release did not give a cost for the weapon, but said each shot fired would only cost about $1.50.

Imagery supplied by the agency appears to show a weapon around the size of a shipping container with a laser mounted on top and what appears to be a radar or tracking device mounted on one side of the platform.

DAPA said the unit measures 9 meters by 3 meters by 3 meters (29.5 feet by 9.8 feet by 9.8 feet), and fires laser rays that are difficult if not impossible to detect before impact.

“It is invisible and noiseless, does not require separate ammunition and can be operated only when electricity is supplied,” the DAPA release said. Future versions could be developed to take out much bigger targets, including aircraft and ballistic missiles, which would be a potential “game changer,” according to the release.

But the Block-I weapon itself comes online at an important time. In Ukraine, the Middle East and elsewhere, small drones - some available off the shelf - have shown the ability to disable or destroy multimillion-dollar pieces of military hardware, including tanks.

Militaries have typically responded by trying to take out low-cost drones with defensive systems that cost tens of thousands of dollars per strike. A weapon that could do the same for practically pennies would be a big boost to the country that can deploy it.

“Low-cost drones and rockets have swung the economic calculus of offense and defense in favor of those using large volumes of cheap unmanned systems and munitions to overwhelm more-sophisticated air and missile defenses,” James Black, assistant director defense and security for the RAND Europe think tank, wrote in a blog post in January.

DAPA said the Block-I weapon has been in development for five years, with more than $63 million invested.

The Korea Institute for Defense Analyses led the system development with participation from Hanwha Aerospace, it said.

The system was evaluated suitable for combat in April 2023 after achieving 100% success in shooting down targets in live-fire tests, according to DAPA.

The agency said South Korea is the first country to publicly acknowledge it will deploy a mass-produced laser weapon.

Earlier this year, Britain showed off a new laser weapon that its military says could deliver lethal missile or aircraft defense at around $13 a shot.

But no possible deployment date for that weapon had been announced.

In 2022, the US Navy successfully tested a high-energy laser system against a target representing a cruise missile.

But a Navy account of that test said there was no plan to get it into the hands of warfighters, adding that it “offers a glimpse into the future of laser weapons.”

Russian strike planners on Friday launched a focused but, according to Kyiv statements, unsuccessful attack against the Khmelnytsky region air base in Starokostyantyniv. The Ukrainian airfield is considered to be the best prepared to handle soon-to-arrive American F-16 fighter jets.

Kremlin Tu-95 “Bear” bombers reportedly launched five Kh-101 cruise missiles – the same weapon responsible for a bloody attack on a Kyiv children’s hospital on Monday – at the Ukrainian Air Force’s main bomber base shortly before midnight Thursday-Friday.

All the missiles had been shot down by early Friday morning, along with 19 Shahed kamikaze drones launched from Russia’s Kursk Oblast to accompany the cruise missiles and intended to distract air defenses, a Ukrainian Air Force statement said.

Khmelnytsky social media followed by news platforms on Friday reported the strike and explosions in the sky similar to successful intercepts in the past. Russian milbloggers reported a nighttime attack hit the airfield, but did not report specific damage.

Ukrainian forces also intercepted and destroyed an unspecified number of a new type of Russian drone, possibly a decoy, the independent Ukrainska Pravda new outlet reported, citing military sources.

The long-anticipated arrival of the effective but technically complex fourth generation fighter to Ukraine’s skies has focused attention on air bases potentially capable of handling the aircraft, which require long runways free of debris, such as gravel and grass, and substantial maintenance and support infrastructure.

In 2018 in a high-profile “proof-of-concept” exercise flight and maintenance crew from the US’s California National Guard flew several F-15 fighter jets – a plane as complex to operate as the F-16 – to the Starokostyantyniv air base for training with the Ukrainian Air Force.

Following Russia’s main force invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Starokostyantyniv has served as the main air base for Ukraine’s bomber fleet. Despite repeated Russian attacks and regular Kremlin announcements of all Kyiv’s aircraft having been destroyed, Ukraine’s Air Force has continued to operate Su-24 “Fencer” bombers from the airfield.

Probably the most punishing strikes launched from Starokostyantyniv took place in September 2023 when Su-24s carrying British Storm Shadow and French SCALP anti-ship missiles destroyed a heavy assault ship and missile submarine operated by the Russian navy, and demolished the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet in the Crimean port city Sevastopol.

The most recent major Russian strike against Starokostyantyniv took place on June 14, when Russia launched 10 cruise missiles, 1 surface-to-surface missile, and 17 kamikaze drones at the base. Ukrainian air defenders claimed shoot downs of seven cruise missiles and all the drones. Damage if any was not reported.

Oleksandr Musienko, a researcher from Kyiv’s Center of Military-Legal Studies, in a June television interview said Kremlin planners with the strikes hope for a “lucky hit” destroying an aircraft or a pilot on the ground, but since there usually is sufficient warning time for Ukrainian pilots to evacuate aircraft or get them under cover before the Russian missiles arrive, the main objective of the Russian strikes against Starokostyantyniv is to degrade the air base’s infrastructure.

The Kremlin wants to render Starokostyantyniv – Ukraine’s only base known to be fully suitable for handling technically complex Western aircraft – incapable of operating F-16 jets efficiently, Musienko told the ICTV news channel.

“We understand very well that the enemy understands this and is looking at how F-16s will be operated from Starokostyantyniv. They want to destroy it… they want to damage the infrastructure. Antennas, radars, support facilities, repair and maintenance. They are looking for storage sites holding SCALP and Storm Shadow missiles… this is all being done, to interfere with the basing of F-16s in Ukraine,” he said.

Some Ukrainian military researchers have confirmed a continuing Russian campaign to keep Starokostyantyniv air base under pressure. The Oko Hora research community in a July 6 analysis of Russian long-range strikes against Ukraine said that the air base was in June the top priority target for Russian kamikaze drone and missile attacks, finding itself in the crosshairs of roughly half of the 368 long-range weapons fired by the Kremlin that month.

Russian military aviation writers, likewise, have pointed to Starokostyantyniv airfield as the most likely base for Ukraine’s F-16 fighter jets.

Defensive infrastructure includes hangars built out of reinforced concrete and advanced radars, they say, and it’s not possible for Kremlin strike planners to know ahead of time how many and what kind of airplanes are on the field, and only a few of Russia’s weapons capable of reaching the airfield are powerful and accurate enough to destroy an aircraft inside a bunker. The solution, the unofficial Russian Air Force milblogger Fighterbomber wrote, is to pound the airfield repeatedly and destroy what can be damaged.

“This airfield, like the Vasylkiv airfield, is today the main airfield of the Ukrainian Air Force and the most protected by air defense. Of course, they are considered by us as the main candidates for basing the F-16,” Fighterbomber, a poster claiming to be Russian Air Force combat pilot, wrote in a Thursday article.

“Therefore, strikes on the Starokostyantyniv with drones, and other types of long-range weapons are being launched against targets outside of shelters, as well as against shelters whose protective doors don’t close, which makes it possible to hope for damage of an aircraft by explosion or fragments… work on this destruction is carried out around the clock. Everyone is waiting for the F-16. The (vulgar Russian word for Ukrainians), and we also,” the blogger Fighterbomber said.

Baku-based military analyst Agil Rustamzade likewise predicted the Russian strikes will continue, and probably intensify.

“Probably, against the backdrop of statements by American and European officials about the beginning of the transfer of F-16 aircraft to Ukraine, attacks on airfields will increase,” Rustamzade said in a Friday statement.

Analysis by Dutch researchers shows coordinated activity in France, Germany and Italy in run-up to ballot

Coordinated networks of accounts spreading disinformation “flooded” social media in France, Germany and Italy before the elections to the European parliament, Dutch researchers have found.

After an in-depth analysis of disinformation on the platform X in four EU countries, the researchers concluded that many of the accounts had been set up after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but were cranked up in the weeks and days before the vote, with growth in their numbers of followers rocketing.

“The impact of these accounts is increasing at an alarming rate,” said Trollrensics, a specialist consultancy commissioned by the Dutch Socialist and Democratic parties in the European parliament. “We can conclude with absolute certainty that a large coordinated network of accounts was influencing the EU elections in Germany, France and Italy.”

Using specialist software, the consultancy studied 2.3m posts from 468,000 accounts in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. From that dataset, it identified 50,000 as accounts that spread disinformation.

In France, it found that of the more than 127,000 posts in its dataset mentioning �ric Zemmour, the founder of the far-right political party Reconqu�te, 20% had come from disinformation accounts.

In Germany, 10% of posts about Alternative f�r Deutschland in their dataset came from the disinformation accounts. The “actual percentage” was likely to be higher in both countries, the consultancy said.

It found no organised disinformation networks in the Netherlands and the accounts it studied in Italy were less concerned with the EU elections and more with controversies over migration or vaccination.

Trollrensics specialises in analysing disinformation networks that typically include troll accounts attempting to interfere in a concerted manner to influence public discourse.

The report, titled EU Elections Investigation, said: “The scale of the operation suggests that it [the disinformation network] necessitates significant human resources and time.”

Many were created after 1 January this year and amassed a large number of followers very quickly. Nearly all the accounts followed by the researchers followed back – another red flag for coordinated activity.

“The technique is primarily used to give the account credibility as it appears more legitimate if it has a large number of followers,” the report said.

The Dutch S&D MEP Thijs Reuten who commissioned the report, said it was difficult to establish a causal link between the accounts and the EU elections results, but he had learned through the research that “the first objective was to show doubt” and discredit the authorities in the west, part of a narrative known to be pushed by Russia.

Robert van der Noordaa, another co-founder of Trollrensics, said: “If you are surrounded on whatever social media platform by accounts from the same country, posting in the same language and they are all saying ‘vote for this guy’, that probably works far better than Coca-Cola saying ‘drink Coca-Cola’.”

Details: In 2017, the media released an article about the role of Dutch firms in the construction of the Crimean Bridge, which prompted the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Dutch Customs Service to initiate a criminal investigation.

Eventually, the investigation found a lot of ties with the Dieseko building equipment supplier. Allegedly, in 2015-2016, the company sold pile drivers and related equipment for the construction of the Crimean Bridge, as well as offered technical help, including sending mechanics to work at the site.

As a result, Dieseko was found guilty of violating sanctions by taking part in the construction of the bridge. Because the corporation had not previously been charged, the prosecutor's office consented to an out-of-court settlement.

According to the settlement, Dieseko will pay a fine of �180,000, and the "illegally obtained benefit" of �1.6 million will be confiscated by the state. The company also committed not to violate EU sanctions in the future.

According to the Dutch prosecutor's office, 6 firms and 10 individuals have been held accountable for their roles in the construction of the Kerch Bridge; all matters were handled out of court.

Last year, a German court imposed a fine of �1.3 million on a corporation in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein for violating Russian sanctions in connection with their involvement in the construction of the Kerch Bridge.

Russian companies are reported to be increasingly using a food additive that is banned in the country—"meat glue" or transglutaminase—to cut production costs.

Citing data from Rosselkhoznadzor, the state agricultural safety agency, and public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, newspaper Izvestia reported Tuesday that there were 25 cases of the substance being used by producers of meat and dairy products in 2023. It added that this figure is twice as many as in 2022, while 28 cases have already been recorded in the first half of 2024.

A long list of imports—such as cheese, fish and meat from EU countries—have been banned in Russia for two years in an apparent response to Western sanctions on Russian pro-Kremlin officials and enterprises over Russia's involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

The food additive "meat glue" is an enzyme that can be used to increase the volume of food products; bind pieces of meat together to form larger pieces; and improve the texture of foodstuffs such as cheese. It has been banned for use in food production in Russia since 2020, but is reportedly still easily able to be purchased online.

Transglutaminase was also banned by the European Union in 2010, according to Food Safety News. It is still permitted for use in the United States.

"This enzyme is used by unscrupulous manufacturers in the production of cheeses, yogurt, cottage cheese, meat products in order to increase the mass by up to 25% due to moisture retention, as well as to connect ('glue') animal and vegetable proteins, which is used by manufacturers," the agency added.

Rospotrebnadzor said it was constantly monitoring the quality and safety of food products in Russia.

"From April 2022 to May 2024, Rosselkhoznadzor and Rospotrebnadzor caught more than 50 manufacturers of meat and dairy products using it (including those previously held accountable for this)," Oleg Pavlov, head of Russia's Public Consumer Initiative (OPI) and deputy chairman of Rospotrebnadzor, told Izvestia newspaper.

Pavlov said dozens of companies are currently selling meat glue for wholesale and retail purchase. He said he has filed an appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office to ask for the substance to be withdrawn from the market.

More than 1,300 asylum seekers crossed over from Russia since last summer but there had been no new arrivals since March until Thursday.

“Don’t go with the smugglers,” he told the news conference. “Finland takes care of its borders. The access to the borders orchestrated by Russia will not lead to access to Finland or Europe.”

Moscow has denied such an intention. The Russian embassy in Helsinki did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Viceminister van Defensie Cezary Tomczyk zei donderdag tegen de omroep TVN24 dat Polen zijn defensiebudget in 2025 met ongeveer 10 procent zou verhogen tot een recordhoogte.

Een dag eerder werd bekend dat Polen nog eens 2 miljard euro uittrekt voor de verdediging langs de grens met Belarus en Kaliningrad, een Russische exclave ten noorden van de NAVO-staat.

Het kan niet anders dan dat Polen enorme voorraden aan het aanleggen is en veel personeel aanneemt.

Kansen voor de Nederlandse industrie?

Misschien Nederlanders die in het Poolse leger willen werken als specialist?

Of misschien Nederlandse experts die hun diensten willen verlenen aan Polen?
