Genesis To Enter Endurance Racing’s Top Class With LMDh Programme
New era for Genesis to 'add a new pillar to Hyundai Motorsport's porfolio'
Genesis, the Hyundai Motor Group’s premium brand, is set to compete at the top level of endurance racing in the future, with the brand announcing today that it will add an LMDh programme to Hyundai Motorsports’ portfolio.
The announcement from Genesis today is brief, giving no detail on its chassis partner, which championship(s) it will enter or which year it will debut, the announcement though is set to be the first of several as more detail is revealed of a planned multi-part programme.
“Genesis is proud to announce its ambitious entry into the world of endurance racing through the LMDh programme,” its statement read. “Genesis is actively exploring programmes to strengthen its high-performance image, and after a thorough evaluation of various options, LMDh emerged as the most strategic choice for us at this time.
“We have carefully analysed LMDh and found it to be a natural fit for our motorsport ambitions and a valuable platform to drive the development of future mobility technologies for road cars. Endurance racing presents an unparalleled opportunity to showcase Genesis’ cutting-edge technology, design philosophy and performance-driven character in a highly competitive arena. This project is part of our broader vision for the future of mobility.”
However, DSC believes via industry sources that the programme will see Genesis compete in both the FIA WEC’s Hypercar class and IMSA’s GTP class, meaning the brand will be present for the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona and Le Mans 24 Hours in the future, subject to its entries being approved.
DSC has also previously reported that the chassis partner will be ORECA, the target is for a 2026 debut and that an in-house team will be used for the globe-trotting arm, with key staff currently moving close to Paul Ricard in the South of France in preparation.
For the WEC effort, the automaker is expected to form a team to compete in LMP2 in the 2025 European Le Mans Series. This would allow its personnel to gain experience with the ACO rulebook, although it would be unlikely to feature Hyundai branding.
Several partnership options believed to be on the table including current ELMS teams and at least one with expertise in an entirely different area of motorsport.
As for the IMSA GTP effort, there are a number of options on the table for a service provider, with Chip Ganassi Racing believed to be a front-runner.
