Ook Belgi gaat Oekrane F-16's leveren en Oekraense piloten trainen. De straaljagers worden "vanaf 2025" geleverd, zegt minister van Defensie Ludivine Dedonder in een interview met radiozender Bel RTL. De Belgische autoriteiten wachten tot de nieuwe F-35-toestellen operationeel zijn die de F-16's vervangen.
Het nieuws is bekendgemaakt op de dag dat president Zelensky onaangekondigd Brussel bezoekt. De Oekraense president gaat in overleg met enkele Belgische ministers en premier De Croo, meldt de VRT.
Onder meer NAVO-landen Denemarken en Nederland gingen Belgi voor in het besluit om de straaljagers te leveren. Het is nog onduidelijk hoeveel F-16's het Belgische leger beschikbaar stelt. Wel zal het land helpen bij de opleiding van Oekraense piloten, het onderhoud van de vliegtuigen in Belgi en de training van technisch personeel, aldus minister Dedonder.
