It is widely claimed that in the early days of the war Ukraine shot down a few Russian Militery transport planes carrying hundreds of Russian soldiers. Are their any photographical evidence available to back this up?
================================================================================n 2017 US DOD lawyers put into place a strict “no share” and “limited share” rule on the US military branches that prohibited real time sharing of information with Ukraine. In 2021 this was apparently removed along with a wide range of punitive anti-Ukraine policies and a new “limited sharing plus” environment was authorized. In the run up to the war in 2022, the US again blew through this policy without changing it, and DOD officials literally opened the data lines between Ukraine and US information networks allowing Ukraine air defense to tap into what is colloquially called the US blue force / red force data environment which currently runs under the standard 2 deployment, with standard 3 in the early phases of being rolled out.
Now here is where it gets complicated - but there is no sensitive data in this discussion so it is fair game. Red force / blue force, which has a code name that is secret, provides useful but limited information on the location of friendly “blue forces” and complex and very detailed locations on enemies, “red force.” This is because a tracker in a command vehicle could be captured and hacked to allow enemy access. In addition there are data layers that only command centers like Spain (Torreón air defense) have, that Blue Force / Red Force does not. A stealth flight will not suddenly show up on everyone trackers all across NATO. So what the US did is simply give Ukraine some trackers and make them active elements both for data input and data use. NATO gets intelligence feeds on Russia, Ukraine gets real time force tracking for Russian assets who are being constantly tracked by a range of elint forces.
American knew perfectly well that the Ukrainians would use this to generate targets on Russian assets if Russian invaded. This was a against the rules at that point, but the US had turned from being an adversary of Ukraine in 2020 too being an active allied in 2022. Now the rules have been changed after the brutality of the Russian invasion. This is a preamble because while US assistance was important and vital to the take down of the large airlifts, it was part of an amazing game in the shadows as the countries moves to war.
What happened:
Starting in early February elements of the Ukrainian SBU began to track an unusual uptick in Russian infiltration off Ukraine. What was surprising was this was almost a flood of special operations soldiers, and they were behaving in a way that indicated they did not feel the need to follow any traditional issues of trade craft. They broke into houses, assaulted women, visited prostitutes, became drunk, and stole property. This behavior is common in Russian controlled Luhansk where the acts are considered spartan and local populations are at the constant mercy of intelligence units of the Russian army who treat it as a party zone and place for bacchanalia, but to have it so open indicated that the Russian high command simply did not think Ukraine would be around any longer.
The SBU was also tipped off by special operators from Azov that other unknown units were moving into place around the nation. This was an interesting undertaking because bilingual Azfv soldiers could tell the difference between the accents of Ukrainians speaking Ukraine from the east, Russians, Russian Ukrainians, and especially, Kadyrovites, and had detailed information on the ground since they had been assigned to fight terrorist of Russian origin in the west for some years.
On 24 February 2022 Russian forces jumped off on what was expected to be a three day decapitation attack on Ukraine, coordinated with terrorist forces and special operations teams with a list of tens of thousands of Ukraine politicians and their families which were to be liquidated. The situation rapidly developed as it turned out that nearly every assassination team, and those teams vectoring in airborne forces for a decapitation strike on Ukraine were anticipated. Nearly every team including the vital teams to assassinate Zelenskyy and to hold major airport were killed in short bloody ambushes which have decimated Russian special operations, many of which are freshly deployed from Syria.
The goal of Russian airborne was to capture air towers then fly in a large airborne force in three to five waves on Ilyushin Il-76 with a goal of putting between dozens of battle groups into Ukraine and ended its resistance. What happened in quite different. Ukrainians monitoring Blue Force Red Force noted that the large Illyushin flight formed and that they corresponded with bloody battles going on with infiltration forces and appear to have arrange a mouse trap. Blue Force trackers in NATO noted that Ukraine radars came on line, and forced Russian flight to diverge and enter kill zones.
The first Illyushin died outside of Vasylkiv as it turned to land into the Vasylkiv Air Base and entered the engagement pocket for an s300 missile system. Locals claim 240 bodies were recovered from the aircraft and offered to Russias who have left them stored south of the town. There are not confirmed pictures of this, but Israeli news offered private verification of the downing on the tv show Israel Today before it embargoed the press coverage.
All airborne transport aircraft were recalled it seems at this point.
The second airliner lost was one of the furthest who was engaged over Bila Tserkva where it was believed it was trying to take that city using an old Soviet airbase. The plane was attacked, and images of the debris field are know, but there is no effort yet it appears to explore or collect the debris.
So there is two lost Russian transport, killed by a combination of ground intelligence and data sharing.
