The charity brought a case against the government, arguing the project was the “right idea, wrong place” and that the planning permission decision-making process was flawed.
At a hearing in February, the trust, whose challenge was opposed by ministers, claimed there was an “unlawful” approach to the consideration of alternative sites and highlighted the alleged impact the development might have on the heritage setting, including the Buxton Memorial which celebrates the abolition of slavery.
The trust’s lawyer, Richard Drabble QC, also said the plans did not comply with a 1900 legal act affecting park land, whose requirements represented “a prohibition on using Victoria Tower Gardens as anything other than a garden open to the public”.
In a ruling issued on Friday, Mrs Justice Thornton said the trust’s case against the planning permission decision succeeded in relation to its arguments over the 1900 act.
The judge said the act “imposes an enduring obligation” to retain land “as a public garden and integral part of the existing Victoria Tower Gardens”.
She concluded: “Accordingly, the appropriate remedy is to quash the decision, so as to enable further consideration of the implications of the London County Council (Improvements) Act 1900 for the proposed scheme.”

Ik weet niet of Sunak nou echt zijn belangrijkste potentiële tegenstander is. Wel degene waar hij de meeste conflicten mee lijkt te hebben, maar hij lijkt bijv. geen frontrunner te zijn om Johnson eventueel te vervangen (ik kom nog steeds Truss en Hunt daar als de gedoodverfde top 2 tegen).quote:

Nu niet meer iig maar Sunak werd het afgelopen jaar meermaals als opvolger van Johnson opgevoerd. Wat toch wel de indruk wekt dat dit weer eens een Johnson lek was om Sunak te beschadigen. Sunak heeft altijd al het nadeel gehad dat hij jong/onervaren is (zo werd het in ieder geval gepresenteerd in de Britse pers) en weinig connecties heeft binnen de Partij.
In ander nieuws, blijkbaar staat Patel van de belangrijke kabinetsposities intussen onderaan in een interne poll binnen de Tories. Als die bij een reshuffle blijft zitten is het omdat niemand andets het Home Office wilt hebben.

Er komen binnenkort 2 by-elections aan. Imran Ahmad Khan heeft zijn ontslag aangeboden na zijn veroordeling voor aanranding van een 15-jarige jongen. Hij was MP voor Wakefield in Yorkshire sinds 2019, de eerste Conservatieve MP voor dat district na 90 jaar Labour.
En daarnaast heeft ook Neil Parish zijn ontslag ingediend. Hij is de MP die in opspraak kwam omdat hij naar verluidt porno zat te kijken in de vergaderzaal van het parlement, Sinds 2010 vertegenwoordigt hij Tiverton & Honiton in Devon. Zou normaal gesproken safe Conservative zijn, maar het district lijkt sprekend op North Shropshire, waar de LibDems vorig jaar verrassend wonnen.

There is no exit poll for these local elections though. The BBC will, however, release a projected national share of the vote on Friday.
This is a rough estimate of how well or badly parties would have done in a national election, if voters had behaved in the same way.
In the meantime, we’ll have to wait for the official results, due in the coming hours and days.
