Olympische Spelen 2024
Meedoen is leuk, maar uiteindelijk gaat het vooral om winnen. Dé ranglijst is het medailleklassement. Een uiterst oneerlijke lijst, waar alleen het aantal GOUD echt telt. Maar ja, eerlijk wordt het sowieso nooit, met het geld en de aantal inwoners van verschillende landen.
Traditioneel was de VS altijd de klassementswinnaar, voor de oorlog was het vooral een duel met het organiserende land. Finland deed opvallend genoeg in die jaren ook goed mee. Na de tweede wereldoorlog noteren we vooral een strijd tussen de Sovjets en de VS, meestal gewonnen door de Sovjets. De laatste jaren was het vooral China dat de strijd met de VS aan probeerde te gaan, maar alleen in 2008 waren zij de beste.
Naast de VS zijn er een aantal landen die de meer recente edities goed presteerden. Groot-Brittannië heeft het sportklimaat duidelijk op orde, Het fietsen en roeien zijn echte melkkoeien en daarmee werden ze in Rio ietwat verrassend tweede. China verslagen, jeetje. Die waren niet goed genoeg op hun onderdelen, voornamelijk het Gewichtheffen. Daar zullen ze nu wel geholpen zijn door het feit dat Noord-Korea niet deelneemt. Schoonspringen en pingpong zijn nog wel mooie manieren om de tabel lekker op te krikken.
Daarachter lijkt Japan de beste kanshebber. Ja, ze werden in Rio slechts zesde, maar dat thuisvoordeel moet toch wat doen. Het team van ROC zal misschien nog wat plakken verliezen, al bleken de beperkingen in 2016 ook niet problematisch. Duitsland deed het vijf jaar terug ook goed. Ik verwacht een vierde plek voor Japan, voor ROC en Duitsland. Daarachter ligt het een stuk meer open. Voor die laatste vier plaatsen in de top 10 zijn er een aantal kanshebbers. Zuid-Korea draait de laatste jaren, en met weer een extra onderdeel op Boogschieten kunnen we zo een extra goud toevoegen. Een schermland als Italië mag ook niet klagen met 2 extra onderdelen aldaar, en dan zijn er nog Frankrijk, Hongarije en ook het in 2016 licht teleurstellende Australië. Oh, en vergeet het vlaggetje niet. Nederland, ja! Met de voorspellingen moet het toch lukken. Maar ja, dat is allemaal koffiedik kijken. Misschien dat outsider Spanje nog wat kan, maar dat verwacht ik niet. Of een of ander mal land uit Azië, Iran met 8 goud op het worstelen en 6 op het gewichtheffen, het kan allemaal! En dan zijn er nog Jamaica, Kenia en Ethiopie die een laatste week hebben waar Steven Kruijswijk jaloers van wordt.
Het wordt in ieder geval weer spectaculair. En hopelijk krijgen we ook nog wat landen op de kaart die nooit eerder een medaille of goud wonnen. Vier jaar geleden Ivoorkust, Niger, Kosovo en Fiji bijvoorbeeld. Wie komen daarbij?

Van bijna dood tot olympiër:
Burkina Faso (hinkstapspringen) heeft een prima kans op een eerste medaille ooit, San Marino (schieten en worstelen) ook en ook Turkmenistan (gewichtheffen) is zeker niet onrealistisch. Bosnië heeft een kansje, maar een paar jaar geleden zou die met Amel Tuka een stuk groter zijn geweest.
Van bijna dood op weg naar de Olympische Spelen, tot olympiër in 2026? Elk beetje hulp wordt bijzonder gewaardeerd!

Misschien een tweede medaille in de maak voor Virgin Islands met handboogschutter Nicholas D'Amour (vierde op de wereldranglijst). De eerste medaille werd behaald in 1988 bij het zeilen.
