2700ton AN staat ongeveer gelijk aan 1100ton TNT.

quote:How Beirut firefighters were sent to the site of deadly explosion
A team of 10 was ordered to respond to a fire at the Beirut port. They did not know what they were heading for.
by Timour Azhari
Beirut, Lebanon - About five minutes before 6pm (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday, Beirut's fire brigade received a call from the police, who told them that witnesses had spotted smoke billowing out of the city's port.
First Lieutenant Raymond Farah was the one to receive the call. "I told them that I won't send out my fire trucks before knowing what kind of fire it is. I need to know what's there," he told Al Jazeera.
"An officer from state security called and said it was a hangar with just fireworks. Knowing that, and based on the order of the commander of the firefighters, I gave the order to go."
Immediately, a team of 10 - nine male firefighters and a female paramedic - got into a fire truck and an ambulance and raced towards the port, a short drive from their location in the city's Karantina neighbourhood.
They were waved through the port's gates by army personnel stationed at its doors.
Farah was in close contact with them. "They called after they arrived and said, 'There's something wrong here; there is a crazy sound and a huge fire.'"
The team asked for support. Farah rang the fire bell and those on duty sprang into action - picking up kit, and running downstairs to where the fire engines are. Farah watched a driver get in one fire engine and slam the door - and then the explosion hit.
"First the air hit us, then it was very hot. Not two stones were left on top of each other in the command centre," Farah said. The blast, fuelled by some 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in Hangar 12 at the port, ripped through their command centre and rolled across Beirut. At least 154 people have died so far, while more than 5,000 are wounded.
The top floors of the buildings were devastated, according to the commander of Beirut's firefighters, Brigadier General Najib Khankarli. "In a way, those at the port saved the people at the centre by calling in support. If they were in their offices, they wouldn't have made it," he told Al Jazeera.
After tending to the wounded, Farah ran out onto the street, waved down a motorbike and was driven to the port. "When I got to near the hangar, there was no fire truck, no ambulance. It was as if they evaporated," he said. "The biggest piece of them we're finding is the size of a hand."
Sahar Fares, the paramedic, has been confirmed dead and was buried in an emotional funeral on Thursday. The missing firefighters - Najib and Charbel Hitti, Ralph Mallahi, Charbel Karam, Joe Noun, Rami Kaaki, Joe Bou Saab, Elia Khzami, and Mathal Hawa - are presumed dead.
Farah, Khankarli, and the head of the Beirut police force, Mohammad Ayoubi, all said they had no idea that the huge amount of highly explosive ammonium nitrate was stored at the port.
"Had we known that there was this amount of explosive material in the port, we would have acted completely differently. We would have called for an evacuation of the area and definitely we wouldn't have sent these young men and women in," Khankarli said.
Questions over negligence
Correspondence between various officials and agencies has shown that the Beirut port authority, Lebanese customs, the army and the judiciary were aware of the presence of the ammonium nitrate in Beirut's port since shortly after its arrival in November 2013 by a cargo ship.
Successive public works ministers, nominally in charge of overseeing the port, also had knowledge of its presence. Public Works Minister Michel Najjar told Al Jazeera that the ministry sent at least 18 letters to the judiciary asking for the material to be disposed of since its arrival.
The state security began an investigation into the matter in 2019, referring its findings to the prime minister's office, army intelligence and customs.
But both the army and state security personnel at the port failed to warn firefighters who they came into contact with in the minutes before the explosion. Several members of state security, army and general security were also killed in the explosion, suggesting that those on the ground were not aware of what was inside Hangar 12.
"I'm sure that if these personnel knew what was inside, they would have run away and they wouldn't have died," Farah said. "It's the big ones who had the information."
The Lebanese investigation committee overseeing the matter, headed by Prime Minister Hassan Diab, includes both the army and state security.
Rights organisations including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have called for the involvement of international experts in the investigation, citing a lack of trust in Lebanese authorities, as did French President Emmanuel Macron in Beirut on Thursday, calling it "a matter of credibility".
Khankarli said: "Hopefully we find those who are still missing, and the victims get justice."

https://www.theguardian.c(...)rks-stored-in-hangarquote:Beirut explosion: former port worker says fireworks stored in hangar
Dozens of bags of fireworks were stored in the same hangar as thousands of tonnes of ammonium nitrate at Beirut’s port and may have been a decisive factor in igniting the explosive chemical compound that fuelled Tuesday’s huge explosion, a former port worker and other sources have told the Guardian.
As angry Lebanese plan a major protest in central Beirut on Saturday, scrutiny has focused on how 2,750 tonnes of the dangerous material could have been stored so close to residential neighbourhoods for years – despite repeated warnings of the risk it posed.
A former port worker, Yusuf Shehadi, told the Guardian he had been instructed by the Lebanese military to house the chemicals in warehouse 12 at the port despite repeated protests by other government departments.
“We complained a lot about this over the years,” said Shehadi, who worked at the port until emigrating to Canada in March this year. “Every week, the customs people came and complained and so did the state security officers. The army kept telling them they had no other place to put this. Everyone wanted to be the boss, and no one wanted to make a real decision.”
In addition, the hangar housed a quantity of fireworks, Shehadi said, which customs had confiscated in about 2009-10 and which he said he had personally seen delivered on a forklift. “There were 30 to 40 nylon bags of fireworks inside warehouse 12,” he said.
“They were on the left-hand side when you entered the door. I used to complain about this. It wasn’t safe. There was also humidity there. This was a disaster waiting to happen. The port workers did not put the chemicals there in the first place. That outrage rests with the government.”
A second source has confirmed the fireworks’ presence, which was also the subject of media reports in Lebanon on Friday.

https://edition.cnn.com/2(...)explosion/index.htmlquote:Ammonium nitrate that exploded in Beirut bought for mining, Mozambican firm says
The original buyers of the ammonium nitrate that was left at Beirut's port have told CNN that it had been bought for use in mining.
Fábrica de Explosivos Moçambique (FEM), a Mozambican explosives manufacturing company, told CNN that they were the ones who originally ordered the ammonium nitrate that was left at Beirut's port for nearly seven years.
The order of ammonium nitrate was intended for manufacturing explosives for mining companies in Mozambique, the spokesperson said.
"We can confirm that yes, we did order it," a spokesperson for FEM told CNN.
The ammonium nitrate never made it to Mozambique, the source said, and instead was kept in a container at Beirut's port for over six years before exploding earlier this week. The catastrophic blast has resulted in widespread devastation to Lebanon's capital city and left at least 154 dead, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
FEM told CNN this was the only shipment of the chemical ordered by the Mozambican firm that never arrived.
"This is not common. It's absolutely not common," the spokesperson said. "Usually, when you place an order for whatever it is that you're buying, it's not common that you don't get the goods. This is a vessel, it's not like one thing that was lost in the mail, it's a big quantity."
The spokesperson has been with the company since 2008 and said there had been no similar lost shipments of ammonium nitrate since then.
CNN agreed not to publish the spokesperson's name due to the employee's privacy concerns amid a sensitive international story.
The September 2013 shipment of ammonium nitrate began in Georgia, where the chemical compound was produced. It was transported on the Russian ship, Rhosus, which docked in Beirut, where the chemical compound had been in storage for more than six years. The shipment never made it to Mozambique, the source said.
FEM had worked with an outside trading company to facilitate the transfer of the chemical compound from Georgia to Mozambique. But several months after the ammonium nitrate left Georgia, the spokesperson said the trading company told FEM it would not be arriving: "We were just informed by that trading company: there's a problem with the vessel, your order is not going to be delivered," the spokesperson said. "So, we never paid for it, we never received it."
They added that FEM then purchased another order of ammonium nitrate to replace the lost one and that one was delivered. The spokesperson said they had planned to pay "a significant amount" for the chemical in the first order but the payment was never made.
While the company was aware that the vessel had been detained in Beirut and later impounded by Lebanese officials, the spokesperson insisted "that was absolutely out of our control."
The spokesperson said that colleagues at the company were very "surprised" to learn how long the chemical had been stored at the port as "that's not a material that you want to have stored without having any use for it." Adding, "this is a very serious material and you need to transport it with very strict standards of transportation."
The source added, "it's a dangerous material, it's a very powerful oxidizer and is used for producing explosives. But it's not like gunpowder that you just light a match and it will immediately go off like pyrotechnics. It's a lot more stable."
The quantity -- 2750 metric tons, according to lawyers representing the ship's crew -- was also small compared with other commercial shipments of ammonium nitrate, the FEM spokesperson said.
"That quantity -- it's far less than what we use in a month of consumption," the source said. Adding, "there are some countries in the world with an annual consumption of over 1 million tons. This was just 2.7 thousand (tons)."
The spokesperson revealed that the Mozambican company only learnt of their involvement in the story from news reports on Wednesday that talked of a destination in Mozambique.
"On Wednesday there was some news saying that the cargo was originally intended to go to Mozambique. So, when that happened, we knew it was probably for us," the spokesperson said.
"It's absolutely massive and devastating to see all of that (the events in Beirut). And it's with great sorrow that we see that," they added. "And unfortunately, we see our name attached, even though we have absolutely no part in it."
