US exports of the commodity, primarily used to feed livestock, to China plummeted by 50% last year, which the authors say is an unusually sharp level of decline between two trading partners outside wartime.
As well as raising concerns that food is being used as an economic weapon – though not yet at the level of the 1980 grain embargo on the Soviet Union during the cold war – this has prompted fears about the additional burden it could put on an already highly stressed global environment, particularly in the Amazon region.
To make up the gap from the US, China will need to find 22.6m to 37.6m tonnes from elsewhere, notes the journal article. This could be spread among the 94 soy-producing nations but by far the most likely source is Brazil, already the world’s biggest supplier of soy and keen to further boost its agricultural exports.
Boosting production would require either greater yields per hectare or more land. More intensive agriculture is difficult because Brazil’s nutrient-poor tropical soils already need nearly three times as much fertiliser as those in the US and Canada. So the easiest way for farmers to increase harvests is to plough new fields in the frontier lands of the Cerrado savannah and the Amazon forest.
The amount of land needed would depend on adjustments to global trade and government regulation. U.S. approved secret nuclear power work for Saudi Arabia

Several countries including the United States, South Korea and Russia are in competition for that deal, and the winners are expected to be announced later this year by Saudi Arabia.
Perry’s approvals, known as Part 810 authorizations, allow companies to do preliminary work on nuclear power ahead of any deal but not ship equipment that would go into a plant, a source with knowledge of the agreements said on condition of anonymity. The approvals were first reported by the Daily Beast.
The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said in the document that the companies had requested that the Trump administration keep the approvals secret.
“In this case, each of the companies which received a specific authorization for (Saudi Arabia) have provided us written request that their authorization be withheld from public release,” the NNSA said in the document. In the past, the Energy Department made previous Part 810 authorizations available for the public to read at its headquarters.
A Department of Energy official said the requests contained proprietary information and that the authorizations went through multi-agency approval process.

Het uiten van kritiek en het hebben van een onderbouwde kritische houding ten opzichte van de wereld om ons heen, is was anders dan het verspreiden van allerhande samenzweringstheorieën.
Ik ben het met iedereen eens dat deze scheidslijn soms lastig te trekken is. Zeker als zo’n mogelijke samenzwering onderwerp van onderzoek is. Zo’n scheidslijn zal wellicht altijd arbitrair aanvoelen.
