Daarnaast is het duidelijk dat Gates volledig meewerkt met Mueller. It is unclear how and when the special counsel’s office began its investigation into Psy-Group’s work, but F.B.I. agents have spent hours interviewing the firm’s employees. The company is now in liquidation. Het kan hier mee te maken hebben, maar ja, who knows?

Republicans Fought Obamacare. Now They’re Campaigning to Save It
quote: Numerous Republicans who are supporting attempts to dismantle Obamacare are simultaneously campaigning for election on their support for a core provision of the law. The GOP spent the eight years since the Affordable Care Act was passed attempting to derail it in Congress, the White House and the courts. But those efforts have struck a nerve when it comes to a central element of the law -- rules protecting insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions. It’s put Republican candidates from conservative states and swing House districts on the defensive, and given an opening for vulnerable Democrats such as Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill and Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly to highlight a favorable contrast with their opponents. For McCaskill, Donnelly and other Democrats running in Republican-dominated states, the debate also is a chance to talk about something other than their votes against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, which energized GOP voters. The issue illustrates the shift in health-care politics since Republicans exploited antipathy to the 2010 law to win subsequent elections. This year is different, as numerous polls show health-care as the No. 1 issue for voters in the 2018 midterm elections and that protecting those with pre-existing conditions is overwhelmingly popular across party lines. SPOILER Third Rail“It’s remarkable how much the ACA and the efforts to repeal it have made protections for people with pre-existing conditions something of a political third rail,” said Larry Levitt, senior vice president for health reform at the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a candidate running for office right now who says they’re against protections for pre-existing conditions, but whether they support actual polices to make that protection a reality is a different question.” Democrats running in states or districts where Trump won in 2016 have zeroed in on the issue in their re-election campaigns. McCaskill, one of the Senate Democrats most at risk on Nov. 6, has put the issue front and center in her campaign against Republican state Attorney General Josh Hawley. Hawley signed on to a lawsuit started by the Texas attorney general that aims to invalidate the Obamacare law. Missouri Battle"Josh Hawley decided to use your taxpayer dollars to file a lawsuit that would take away important prescription drug coverage for seniors through Medicare and end all of the consumer protections under the ACA — including protections for Missourians with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, cancer or diabetes," she wrote in an August op-ed for the Springfield News-Leader. Since then, she has posted video testimonials from more than two-dozen constituents who depend on the consumer protections. Hawley last week released an emotional television ad in which he discusses his son’s chronic disease, and promises viewers: "I support forcing insurance companies to cover all pre-existing conditions, and Claire McCaskill knows it." The backdrop for the debate is the unsuccessful attempt by President Donald Trump and a Republican-led Congress to replace the Affordable Care Act with legislation that would’ve weakened the consumer regulations and, experts said, driven up costs for insurance for sick people while lowering them for healthy people. Texas LawsuitAfter those efforts failed, the Justice Department backed the Texas lawsuit, which seeks to overturn the health-care law on constitutional grounds. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has taken regulatory action to expand the use of short-term insurance plans that don’t have to comply with pre-existing condition rules. Hawley campaign spokeswoman Kelli Ford said he’s supporting the lawsuit because he views the ACA’s requirement that all individuals have health insurance as unconstitutional. She said Hawley "wants Congress to mandate that insurance companies cover everyone with pre-existing conditions" but didn’t say if he supports requiring a set of benefits to be included in policies. In his own op-ed published last week, Hawley suggested requiring insurers to offer plans at the same prices regardless of whether the consumer has or had an illness, and have the federal government step in to help pay for costs above a threshold. Shotgun BlastGOP Senate candidate Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia’s attorney general, has signed onto the Texas lawsuit. Joe Manchin, the only Democrat to vote for Kavanaugh, has made that a centerpiece of his campaign. He’s run a TV ad in which he fires a shotgun at a copy of the lawsuit, saying Morrisey would "take away health care from people with pre-existing conditions; he is just dead wrong." Donnelly and Montana’s Jon Tester, another Democrat running in a state where Trump won, are also trying to capitalize on the issue. Representative Dana Rohrabacher, a 15-term Republican who represents Orange County in California and faces perhaps his toughest re-election battle, released an ad last week saying that he’s "taking on both parties and fighting for those with pre-existing conditions." Rohrabacher voted for his party’s Obamacare replacement bill that included state waivers from rules that prohibit charging higher prices to people with pre-existing conditions. Trump has tried to counter by depicting himself as a champion for covering pre-existing conditions at recent rallies with Republican candidates, including Morrisey. "I will always fight for and always protect patients with pre-existing conditions," he said on Sept. 29 in West Virginia. Facing AttacksRepublican Senate candidates who have faced attacks from Democratic opponents on the issue include Senator Dean Heller of Nevada, Governor Rick Scott of Florida, Representative Jim Renacci of Ohio and Representative Kevin Cramer of North Dakota. All of them have supported their party’s efforts to unwind Obamacare. Levitt and other health-care policy experts say that pre-existing condition rules are unsustainable without mechanisms to expand participation and provide financial assistance. Legislation has been offered by Senator Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, as a contingency for pre-existing conditions in the event the Texas lawsuit succeeds. Levitt said the protections are "something of a mirage" as they’d allow insurers to exclude benefits under some circumstances and charge higher premiums. Another bill by House Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden, an Oregon Republican. doesn’t accomplish its stated goal of preventing higher premiums for pre-existing conditions, Levitt said. ‘Details Matter’"The details matter enormously in insurance regulation," he said. Texas Representative Pete Sessions, locked in a competitive re-election race, helped shepherd the bill through the House as Rules Committee chairman that would open the door for insurers to raise costs for covering pre-existing conditions. He’s backed away from that by offering a separate bill with some protections as well as proposing a nonbinding resolution that calls for lower premiums, out-of-pocket costs, and more provider choices to people with pre-existing conditions. The Sessions resolution was co-signed by Renacci and Cramer. Other signatories include GOP candidates facing difficult re-election challenges, including New York’s Claudia Tenney, Michigan’s Mike Bishop and New York’s John Faso, all of whom have taken heat for supporting the Republican-backed American Health Care Act, which passed the House and stalled in the Senate. Some Republicans are counter-attacking by claiming Democrats are pushing to replace private insurance with a government-run health system, something most of the party hasn’t embraced. House Speaker Paul Ryan on Monday said the debate is presenting a “false choice” because everyone supports protections for pre-existing conditions. Health-care premiums have been on the rise in recent decades, before and after the ACA, squeezing middle-class families. Many obtained coverage for the first time after the law passed, including those with pre-existing conditions who had been shut out of the market. The uninsured rate among non-elderly adults fell from 18.2 percent to 10.3 percent since 2010, according to an August estimate by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Even Republicans who voted against the House GOP bill are facing attacks because of the actions of their party leaders. An ad from Democrat Jennifer Wexton derisively labeled Virginia Republican Representative Barbara Comstock "Barbara Trumpstock" and depicted her as being "against protections for pre-existing conditions. She voted against her party’s House legislation.

Trump officials plan maintenance downtime for healthcare.gov during ObamaCare sign-ups
quote: The Trump administration is planning hours-long downtimes for maintenance on healthcare.gov during the coming ObamaCare sign-up period.
The administration drew criticism for a similar move last year from advocates who said the downtime would hinder efforts to sign people up for coverage, but the administration counters that maintenance downtime happens every year and is designed to occur during the slowest periods on the site.
The maintenance schedule is the same as last year, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Tuesday, meaning healthcare.gov is scheduled to be offline for maintenance from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. each Sunday during the sign-up period, except for the final Sunday, for a total of 60 hours of downtime. Officials said that is the maximum possible downtime, and said last year the actual downtime was significantly less than what was scheduled, at 21.5 hours out of a scheduled 60.
“Maintenance windows are regularly scheduled on healthcare.gov every year during Open Enrollment,” a CMS spokesperson said.
“Regular scheduled maintenance will continue to be planned for the lowest-traffic time periods on healthcare.gov, including Sunday mornings,” the spokesperson added. “Last year, healthcare.gov was down for significantly less than the full amount of time initially authorized.”
CMS said there were 53.5 hours of maintenance downtime on Sunday mornings at the end of 2016, under the Obama administration.
The coming sign-up period, for 2019 coverage, runs from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15.
"CMS is clearly at pains to provide assurances of its benign intent in this maintenance schedule," said Eliot Fishman, senior director of health policy at the liberal health-care advocacy group Families USA. "But with the President continuing to regularly brag about gutting the ACA and with the Administration refusing to defend the law in court, there is reason to be concerned about a schedule that takes the federal marketplace down for long stretches over weekends during holiday season. We’ll be watching this closely."
Any announcement on the Trump administration’s plans for ObamaCare sign-ups draws scrutiny. Democrats have long accused the administration of “sabotaging” the law.
For example, the Trump administration last year cut the advertising budget to encourage people to sign up by 90 percent, a move that Democrats quickly criticized saying it would significantly hinder the number of people enrolling.

New York AG Presses Forward With Suit Against Trump's Charitable Foundation
Dikke problemen voor Trump's slushfund.
quote: The New York Attorney General's Office is urging a state court not to dismiss its lawsuit against President Trump's charitable foundation, saying the foundation has repeatedly violated state and federal laws.
Attorney General Barbara Underwood said the Donald J. Trump Foundation "was a shell corporation that functioned as a checkbook from which the business entity known as the Trump Organization made payments."
Underwood sued the foundation in June, saying it repeatedly solicited money from donors and then used it for campaign-related purposes, violating federal election law. The money was also used to benefit Trump' business interests, by settling legal claims against it, for example, Underwood said.
Underwood also said that Trump's three oldest children — Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump — had exercised no real control over the foundation's activities, despite being nominal board members.
In August, the foundation asked the New York State Supreme Court to dismiss the suit, denying that it had violated any laws.
The foundation said the suit was politically motivated and that Underwood's predecessor, Eric Schneiderman, who initiated the investigation, had vowed to "lead the resistance" against Trump. Schneiderman resigned in May following allegations of physical abuse against women.
Underwood said in Thursday's filing that the foundation had misrepresented the claims against it and urged the court to allow the case to proceed.
Underwood is asking the court to dissolve the foundation and is seeking $2.8 million plus additional penalties.

Amerika’s grootste krant drukt opiniestuk van de president af, vier weken voor cruciale verkiezingen.

Donald J. Trump Published 3:15 AM EDT Oct 10, 2018
Throughout the year, we have seen Democrats across the country uniting around a new legislative proposal that would end Medicare as we know it and take away benefits that seniors have paid for their entire lives.
Dishonestly called “Medicare for All,” the Democratic proposal would establish a government-run, single-payer health care system that eliminates all private and employer-based health care plans and would cost an astonishing $32.6 trillion during its first 10 years.
As a candidate, I promised that we would protect coverage for patients with pre-existing conditions and create new health care insurance options that would lower premiums. I have kept that promise, and we are now seeing health insurance premiums coming down.
I also made a solemn promise to our great seniors to protect Medicare. That is why I am fighting so hard against the Democrats' plan that would eviscerate Medicare. Democrats have already harmed seniors by slashing Medicare by more than $800 billion over 10 years to pay for Obamacare. Likewise, Democrats would gut Medicare with their planned government takeover of American health care. The Democrats' plan threatens America's seniors
The Democrats' plan means that after a life of hard work and sacrifice, seniors would no longer be able to depend on the benefits they were promised. By eliminating Medicare as a program for seniors, and outlawing the ability of Americans to enroll in private and employer-based plans, the Democratic plan would inevitably lead to the massive rationing of health care. Doctors and hospitals would be put out of business. Seniors would lose access to their favorite doctors. There would be long wait lines for appointments and procedures. Previously covered care would effectively be denied.
In practice, the Democratic Party’s so-called Medicare for All would really be Medicare for None. Under the Democrats' plan, today’s Medicare would be forced to die.
The Democrats' plan also would mean the end of choice for seniors over their own health care decisions. Instead, Democrats would give total power and control over seniors’ health care decisions to the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
More: My family escaped socialism, now my fellow Democrats think we should move the party in its direction
Cuts in Social Security and Medicare are inevitable. Delaying reform will make it worse.
Half of America skimps to pay for health care. The only fix is to cut waste.
The first thing the Democratic plan will do to end choice for seniors is eliminate Medicare Advantage plans for about 20 million seniors as well as eliminate other private health plans that seniors currently use to supplement their Medicare coverage.
Next, the Democrats would eliminate every American’s private and employer-based health plan. It is right there in their proposed legislation: Democrats outlaw private health plans that offer the same benefits as the government plan.
Americans might think that such an extreme, anti-senior, anti-choice and anti-consumer proposal for government-run health care would find little support among Democrats in Congress.
Unfortunately, they would be wrong: 123 Democrats in the House of Representatives — 64 percent of House Democrats — as well as 15 Democrats in the Senate have already formally co-sponsored this legislation. Democratic nominees for governor in Florida, California and Maryland are all campaigning in support of it, as are many Democratic congressional candidates. Democrats want open-borders socialism
The truth is that the centrist Democratic Party is dead. The new Democrats are radical socialists who want to model America’s economy after Venezuela.
If Democrats win control of Congress this November, we will come dangerously closer to socialism in America. Government-run health care is just the beginning. Democrats are also pushing massive government control of education, private-sector businesses and other major sectors of the U.S. economy.
Every single citizen will be harmed by such a radical shift in American culture and life. Virtually everywhere it has been tried, socialism has brought suffering, misery and decay.
Indeed, the Democrats' commitment to government-run health care is all the more menacing to our seniors and our economy when paired with some Democrats' absolute commitment to end enforcement of our immigration laws by abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. That means millions more would cross our borders illegally and take advantage of health care paid for by American taxpayers.
Today’s Democratic Party is for open-borders socialism. This radical agenda would destroy American prosperity. Under its vision, costs will spiral out of control. Taxes will skyrocket. And Democrats will seek to slash budgets for seniors’ Medicare, Social Security and defense.
Republicans believe that a Medicare program that was created for seniors and paid for by seniors their entire lives should always be protected and preserved. I am committed to resolutely defending Medicare and Social Security from the radical socialist plans of the Democrats. For the sake of our country, our prosperity, our seniors and all Americans — this is a fight we must win.

US intelligence says Saudi crown prince ordered detention of journalist
quote: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman ordered an operation to detain missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi after luring him back to Saudi Arabia, U.S. intelligence revealed, according to The Washington Post. U.S. officials speaking on the condition of anonymity told The Post that Salman and other Saudi officials tried to get Khashoggi to return to Saudi Arabia, where he is from, with offers of government employment and protection. The officials said the intelligence further ties the Saudi government to Khashoggi's disappearance at a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish police have said that Khashoggi was likely killed by a Saudi security team when he visited the consulate last week. Saudi officials have denied they had anything to do with his appearance, and Salman in an interview last week invited Turkish authorities to search the consulate. SPOILER Khashoggi wrote for The Washington Post and sometimes criticized the Saudi government. U.S. officials and lawmakers, including President Trump, have said they are pressing the Saudi government over his disappearance.
Khashoggi reportedly turned down offers for positions with Salman's government, telling one friend, "Are you kidding? I don't trust them one bit," the Post reported.
While intelligence officials are supposed to warn people who might be harmed, U.S. officials told the Post that the intelligence they reviewed only indicated Salman and his government wanted to detain Khashoggi, not hurt him.
“Capturing him, which could have been interpreted as arresting him, would not have triggered a duty-to-warn obligation,” one former official told the Post. “If something in the reported intercept indicated that violence was planned, then, yes, he should have been warned.”
Trump will be required to probe Khashoggi's disappearence after a letter from a bipartisan group of senators on Wednesday requested that he requesting he initiate an investigation under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.
The Washington Post last week ran an editorial arguing Khashoggi's disappearence was part of an effort by Salman's government to censor his critics.
"His criticism, voiced over the past year, most surely rankles Mohammed bin Salman, who was elevated to crown prince last year and has carried out a wide-ranging campaign to silence dissent while trying to modernize the kingdom," the piece read.

53K Georgia voter registration applications on hold with Kemp's office: report
quote: More than 53,000 voter registration applications are sitting on hold with Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp's (R) office, according to a new Associated Press report. A majority of the applicants on that list are black, the AP reported Tuesday, and many applicants may be unaware that their applications have been put on hold. Tuesday marked the state's deadline for residents to register and be eligible to vote in the November general election. The outlet obtained the records from Kemp’s office through a public records request. The secretary of state is responsible for overseeing elections and voter registration. Georgia counties review and process applications, according to the secretary of state's website. A spokeswoman from Kemp's office told The Hill that the applications are being held due to the state's "exact match" law, which passed last year. The law requires an applicant's information to match exactly what is listed by the state's Department of Driver Services or the Social Security Administration. According to the legislation, if an applicant’s information on a voter registration form results does not match the information in a federal or state database, the applicant’s status is "pending." If an application is marked as "pending," the voter registration database produces a letter, giving the applicant 26 months to provide up-to-date information. Applicants who have been flagged can mail in a copy of "eligible identification" or present it at the polls. Voting rights advocates have claimed Kemp's "exact match" law discriminates against black and minority voters, pointing to the racial makeup of the list of stalled voter registration applications, which is 70 percent black, according to AP. The report comes following remarks from Kemp's Democratic opponent for Georgia governor, Stacey Abrams, who has accused Kemp of suppressing votes, particularly those of black and minority voters, according to The Associated Press. Kemp has fiercely denied the allegations. SPOILER Kemp's campaign spokesman Ryan Mahoney said in a statement to the AP that because of Kemp, “it has never been easier to vote in our state.”
“Kemp is fighting to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that only legal citizens cast a ballot,” he added.
Georgia's population is about 32 percent black, according to U.S. census data.
Kemp, however, is blaming a voter registration project launched by Abrams for racial disparities on the list of voter registration applications, the AP reported. He told the news service that the New Georgia Project, which Abrams headed as Georgia House minority leader in 2013, was disorganized when it sought to register large swaths of the state's population.
The New Georgia Project targeted black voters.
Kemp's office said the disparity could be explained by "the higher usage of one method of registration among one particular demographic group," according to the AP.
Voting rights have become a flashpoint in the Georgia governor's race, with Abrams calling Kemp "a remarkable architect of voter suppression."
The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia in August accused one of the state's counties of trying to make it harder for African-Americans to vote when the Randolph County elections board closed seven of its nine polling locations.
Abrams is the first African-American woman to be nominated by a major party to run for governor. The two are running in a tight race, considered a "toss-up," according to a RealClearPolitics average of polling data.

But despite the investigations and the corroboration of the allegations, none of the government agencies, including the office led by Heitkamp, recommended pursuing charges against individuals who allegedly committed the crimes.
In a 1994 memo written by Heitkamp, she cited State Attorney Earle “Bud” Myers’s opinion that no charges should be pressed against individuals who allegedly committed the crimes. Heitkamp didn’t press to revisit the case and pursue the allegations." |

Donald Trump Has a Serious Saudi Arabian Conflict of Interest
“They buy apartments from me. They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them?”
quote: The grisly details of an alleged Saudi government plot to murder dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi are roiling diplomatic and national security circles, but the Trump White House’s reaction has been strangely muted. Asked about the matter on Wednesday afternoon, President Donald Trump vaguely condemned the “bad situation,” while also praising King Salman, the Saudi monarch, as a “fine man.” He stressed that Saudi officials say it’s unclear what became of Khashoggi, who disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Turkish officials say he was killed within hours of entering the consulate by a Saudi hit squad on the orders of senior Saudi royal family members. Trump’s meek response to the diplomatic crisis highlights the ongoing conflicts of interest posed by his business empire. At a 2015 campaign stop, Trump bragged to the crowd about his business dealings with the Saudis. “Saudi Arabia, I get along with all of them,” Trump said. “They buy apartments from me. They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much.” SPOILER In 2001, the Saudi government bought the 45th floor of the Trump World Plaza building in New York City as part of its mission to the United Nations. And shortly before entering the White House, Trump was aggressively pursuing deals with Saudi investors and attempting to build hotels in the Saudi Arabia. In August 2015, in the midst of his presidential run, Trump registered new corporations to manage a prospective hotel in Jeddah, the gateway city to the Muslim holy sites of Mecca and Medina. That project never came to fruition, but the Washington Post reported that at least two of Trump’s US hotel properties—both called the Trump International Hotel & Tower, in New York and Chicago—have benefitted hugely from Saudi business.
At Trump’s New York hotel, room revenues declined for two straight years after Trump launched his presidential bid, but they saw a 13 percent boost during the first three months of 2018. The reason, according to hotel management, was SaudiPrince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to New York City in March. The crown prince, who is known as M.B.S. and is said to wield most of the power in the Saudi government, didn’t stay at the Trump hotel (the rooms are apparently not big enough), but members of his entourage did, and that was enough to give a last-minute shine to the hotel’s quarterly finances. Trump’s Chicago hotel, meanwhile, has seen a 169 percent increase in visits from Saudis since 2016.
This all raises the question: Are Trump’s personal business interests influencing his handling of the unfolding diplomatic crisis?
En de Amerikaanse Inlichtingendienst wist er vanaf en waarschuwde niet
quote: The crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, ordered an operation to lure Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia from his home in Virginia and then detain him, according to U.S. intelligence intercepts of Saudi officials discussing the plan. WP

One Of America’s Oldest Coal Companies Just Filed For Bankruptcy
Wat is dat nou? Trump zou toch een eind maken aan de War on Coal? Hoe kan dit bedrijf dan failliet gaan? |

One Of America’s Oldest Coal Companies Just Filed For Bankruptcy
Westmoreland Coal Co. is the fourth major U.S. coal company to file for bankruptcy in the past three years.
quote: Facing declining demand and saddled with mounting debt, one of the oldest and largest coal companies in the United States has filed for bankruptcy protection. Westmoreland Coal Co. announced Tuesday that it had filed a chapter 11 petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston and had entered into a restructuring agreement with a group of its lenders. The Colorado-based firm has $1.4 billion in debt, according to the bankruptcy filing. Westmoreland is the fourth major American coal company to file for bankruptcy in the past three years, The Associated Press noted. Alpha Natural Resources filed for bankruptcy in 2015; Peabody Energy Corp. and Arch Coal followed the year after. The three companies have since emerged from bankruptcy protection. SPOILER Westmoreland, which has a 164-year history and is the country’s sixth-largest coal mining company, has operations in several states, including Wyoming, Montana and New Mexico. The company, which employs nearly 3,000 people, said in a statement that it did not expect any staff reductions nor operations to be interrupted while it is in chapter 11.
“After months of thoughtful and productive conversations with our creditors, we have developed a plan that allows Westmoreland to operate as usual while positioning Westmoreland for long-term success,” the company’s interim CEO Michael Hutchinson said in a statement. “We will continue to … serve our customers in the normal course as we progress through an expedited process to restructure our long-term debt and other liabilities.”
Growing concerns about the impacts of coal-fired power plants on climate change, the growth of the renewable energy sector and competition from cheaper natural gas have depressed demand for coal in the United States in recent years.
In a declaration filed in bankruptcy court, Westmoreland’s chief restructuring officer Jeffrey Stein acknowledged that “coal mining businesses across the U.S. and around the world are feeling pressure as a result of a variety of macroeconomic factors, and the fate of many of these companies is yet to be determined,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
Since taking office, President Donald Trump, a climate change skeptic, has attempted to revive the domestic fossil fuel industry by rolling back Obama-era regulations of greenhouse gas emissions.
The Sierra Club said Tuesday, however, that Westmoreland’s bankruptcy was the “latest clear signal that the coal industry is in an irreversible decline.”
“With numerous coal companies facing bankruptcy in recent years, it is clear that further investments in coal are a mistake,” Mary Anne Hitt, senior director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, said in a statement.
“The best course for Westmoreland Coal Company moving forward must be to ensure that there are adequate funds to clean up its mines and to treat its workers with the respect they deserve ... Nothing can stop America’s shift away from coal and toward clean energy, but the transition should be managed to ensure workers are treated with respect and that vital environmental obligations are honored,” Hitt continued.

quote: Investigative reporter Craig Unger: “Trump has had contacts with the Russian mafia for 35 years” Author of “House of Trump, House of Putin” on the president’s long history with Russian oligarchs and murky money
While the American public was distracted by the spectacle of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination and eventual confirmation to the Supreme Court, special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal continued. In recent weeks Mueller has issued more indictments against Russian cyber-spies. The Trump campaign's connections with a foreign company skilled at using social media for information warfare has become the focus of renewed interest. Perhaps the most important development is the news that a Republican operative -- who later committed suicide -- had transferred large sums of money to Russian hackers with the goal of obtaining information from Hillary Clinton's email server.
In a stunning coup of investigative journalism, the New York Times recently presented evidence that Donald Trump has been one of the largest tax cheats in recent American history. Before becoming president, Trump apparently evaded hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes. The Times also discovered that, far from being a "self-made man," Donald Trump was the beneficiary of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax fraud, gifts, inheritances, and other tax-free money from his father.
While the American people and the world are eagerly awaiting a great revelation in the Trump-Russia inquiry -- secretly recorded conversations of Donald Trump and his associates pledging personal loyalty to Russian President Vladimir Putin, or a sex tape featuring Trump and Russian prostitutes -- it may be something more mundane and obvious that finally leads to Trump's downfall.
Click for Sound In his new book "House of Trump, House of Putin: The Untold Story of Donald Trump and the Russian Mafia," veteran investigative journalist Craig Unger presents a detailed and exhaustively researched account of how Donald Trump has for decades laundered billions of dollars for Russian organized crime figures and other oligarchs. This fits a larger pattern in which Trump and his inner circle have shown a great comfort with financial crimes and other forms of unethical or illegal behavior to personally enrich themselves at the expense of the American people.
Ultimately, Trump's involvement with Russia's criminal underworld may have created an opening for Putin and his agents to manipulate and control the man who would later become president of the United States.

quote: Republicans may be about to steal an election in GeorgiaIt isn’t often you get to watch an election being stolen in real time, but that might be what is happening right now in Georgia. When it comes to the nationwide, comprehensive, carefully planned Republican effort to suppress the votes of people who are likely to vote Democratic, particularly racial minorities, there is a menu of techniques Republicans employ — voter ID laws, voter purges, limiting early voting, closing polling places in heavily minority neighborhoods, and racial and partisan gerrymandering. But what Brian Kemp is doing right now is truly unique. Kemp, the Republican nominee for governor, is locked in an extremely tight race with Democrat Stacey Abrams. He also happens to be the secretary of state, the official in charge of all elections in Georgia. You might expect him to step down or recuse himself from overseeing his own election in the interest of fairness and public confidence that the fix is not in, but that’s not how Republicans do things. Kemp isn’t just overseeing the process, he’s apparently also doing everything he can to keep as many Democrats as possible from the polls in November.Ben Nadler reports: ------ Two main policies overseen by Kemp have drawn criticism and legal challenges: Georgia’s “exact match” registration verification process and the mass cancellation of inactive voter registrations.According to records obtained from Kemp’s office through a public records request, [Marsha] Appling-Nunez’s application —like many of the 53,000 registrations on hold with Kemp’s office — was flagged because it ran afoul of the state’s “exact match” verification process. Under the policy, information on voter applications must precisely match information on file with the Georgia Department of Driver Services or the Social Security Administration. Election officials can place non-matching applications on hold. An application could be held because of an entry error or a dropped hyphen in a last name, for example. Appling-Nunez says she never saw any notice from Kemp’s office indicating a problem with her application. An analysis of the records obtained by The Associated Press reveals racial disparity in the process. Georgia’s population is approximately 32 percent black, according to the U.S. Census, but the list of voter registrations on hold with Kemp’s office is nearly 70 percent black.------- Who could have predicted such a thing would happen!
We know who: the Republicans in the state legislature who passed the law and the Republican who’s implementing it. In fact, they passed their “exact match” law in 2017 after Kemp settled a lawsuit charging that a previous version of “exact match” was racially discriminatory. Kemp agreed to stop using it, but then the Republican-led legislature stepped in and wrote a new version of it into law so that the suppression could continue. There’s one more interesting twist to this story. How does Kemp justify his racially discriminatory policy? He says the fact that so many black voters are getting their registrations put on hold is the fault of the New Georgia Project, which seeks to register voters and was founded five years ago by none other than Stacey Abrams. The New Georgia Project, Kemp’s office claims, “did not adequately train canvassers to ensure legible, complete forms.” And sure, black people are getting their registrations held up at much higher rates, but that’s just because of “the higher usage of one method of registration among one particular demographic group.” Kemp also says that this whole thing is being stirred up by “outside agitators,” which just happens to be the same name segregationists called those campaigning for civil rights during the Jim Crow era. You can be sure that no one in Georgia misunderstands the reference. We have to keep saying this: Suppressing the votes of Democrats is the whole point of these laws and procedures. Republicans claim to worry about “voter fraud,” and journalists dutifully repeat those claims because when one party says something over and over, you’re supposed to treat it as though it is serious. But everyone knows it’s nonsense. Voter fraud is almost nonexistent, and Republicans aren’t motivated by some deeply held abstract principle about the integrity of elections that they apply whether it helps them or not. It’s just a lie. It’s also an example of how Republicans, who complain all the time about the stifling hand of big government, use their power to weaponize bureaucracy against people they don’t like. They impose “work requirements” on programs such as Medicaid, forcing recipients to navigate a bureaucratic maze in order to maintain their benefits — and if you make a mistake on a form, you can lose your health insurance. Did someone input an “i” in your name when it’s actually an “l”? Sorry, we’re suspending your registration. Haven’t voted in a couple of elections? We’re purging you from the rolls. The final and perhaps cruelest piece of this puzzle is that Republicans have closed off the legal avenues for voters to challenge these discriminatory policies. In 2013, the Republican majority on the Supreme Court eviscerated the Voting Rights Act, in a case involving Shelby County, Ga. In a bit of head-spinning illogic, Chief Justice G. Roberts Jr. wrote that “largely because of the Voting Rights Act,” racial discrimination in voting had been greatly reduced, and therefore it was time to gut the Voting Rights Act. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted in her dissent, destroying the Voting Rights Act because it had succeeded in limiting discrimination was “like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.” Because of the Shelby County v. Holder decision, legal challenges to Kemp’s actions are unlikely to succeed. So we may wind up in Georgia with the same situation we’ve seen over and over again. Republicans gain power, then enact a series of policies and laws to make it harder for Democrats to vote. Democrats undertake a herculean effort to register and turn out voters, but when subsequent elections are extremely close, it turns out that the Republican vote suppression efforts were enough to make the difference. That could well happen in Georgia, where we could see the race decided by a few thousand votes and tens of thousands of legitimate voters kept from the polls. Abrams has based her strategy on registering and turning out as many Democratic voters as possible, including those who haven’t participated before. Kemp’s strategy involves being the most troglodytic Trumpite he can be — and using the powers of his office to put just enough of a thumb on the scale to ensure his victory. If Kemp wins, Republicans around the country will celebrate it as further proof of the efficacy of their vote suppression strategy. And knowing that the Supreme Court is likely to endorse whatever new suppression tactics they come up with, they’ll move even more aggressively to restrict access to the ballot.

Terug naar realiteit bereidt de NAACP een rechtszaak voor, omdat de republikeinen in Georgia zich weer eens racistisch gedragen:
quote: Georgia NAACP readies lawsuit against Kemp over voter registrationThe Georgia NAACP is preparing to sue Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the Republican nominee for governor, in response to a report that Kemp's office has put on hold tens of thousands of voter registration applications, most of them from African-Americans, ahead of the election. The injunction would seek to reopen voter registration in Georgia to ensure that 53,000 registrants on hold in Kemp's office — and possibly others affected by an outage of the Georgia Department of Driver Services and the state's voter registration website — would be allowed to register for the upcoming election. The move was confirmed by to two people with knowledge of the NAACP of Georgia's plans. The last day to register to vote was Tuesday. The strict policies enforced by Kemp's office for voter registration and verification have been under scrutiny in his campaign against Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams, who once ran a nonprofit focused on registering new voters. Under Kemp’s verification policies, voter application information must perfectly match information on file at the Social Security Administration and the state's Department of Driver Services. If they don't match precisely, officials can put the application on hold. An analysis conducted by The Associated Press found that almost 70 percent of the registrants currently on hold are black. Georgia's population is 32 percent black. Abrams needs strong African-American turnout in the state to win the governor's race. Allies of Abrams argue that Kemp is deliberately trying to purge voter rolls to his advantage. In a statement in response to The Associated Press report Wednesday night, Abrams spokesperson Abigail Collazo said that Kemp is "maliciously wielding the power of his office to suppress the vote for political gain and silence the voices of thousands of eligible voters — the majority of them people of color." Kemp’s office pointed to a July statement he made in which he denied any claims that his office has made it harder for Georgians to vote. “Despite any claim to the contrary, it has never been easier to register to vote in Georgia and actively engage in the electoral process,” Kemp said in that statement. “The numbers do not lie.” Geen idee wat dit verder voor kans van slagen heeft.

Senators push vote to block Saudi arms sales after Khashoggi disappearance
quote: Senators in both parties are gearing up to force a vote on scrapping U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia amid mounting frustration over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of the Riyadh government. As Republicans and Democrats raise alarms over Khashoggi, whose vanishing and potential killing have been linked to the Saudis by Turkish intelligence, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Thursday that he plans to introduce a resolution of disapproval once Congress is notified of the next potential U.S. weapons sale to Saudi Arabia. Murphy and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), his ally in pushback against the arms sales, fell four votes short of blocking a Saudi weapons deal last year — and Murphy predicted that they would fare better this time around. “I don’t think that a military sale could pass the Senate today. I don’t think that it could pass the House,” Murphy told reporters. SPOILER Murphy and 21 other senators in both parties aligned on Wednesday to urge President Donald Trump to investigate Khashoggi’s disappearance and sanction those responsible — even if they hailed from the Saudi government. Murphy said, however, that he’s “very doubtful” that the Trump administration would slap on sanctions.
Trump said Thursday that he’s not interested in stopping arms sales to Saudi Arabia, $110 billion of which he rolled out during a trip to the kingdom last year. “I don’t like the concept of stopping an investment of $110 billion into the United States,” Trump told reporters, adding that the money from sales the U.S. lost out on would likely would flow to China or Russia instead.
However, any move that senators can make against Saudi arms deals couldn’t begin until Congress is formally notified of the next sale, which Murphy said he expects within the next 30 to 60 days. And that clock won’t start until an informal hold by the Foreign Relations Committee’s top Democrat, New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, is relinquished.
A forthcoming portion of the U.S.-Saudi arms deal has “already been held for some time,” Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said on Thursday.
Menendez said Thursday that he plans to keep his informal hold going for as long as possible.
“Look, if the administration wants to blow the hold and violate the traditional norms, then they face the consequences of getting more resolutions of disapproval on the floor,” Menendez said in an interview. “And as it relates to the Saudis at this time, I think they’d better calculate. Because their calculation may be wrong, that they can sustain a vote. I think they might lose such a vote.”
Khashoggi was seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week before he vanished, and subsequent Turkish intelligence has pointed to Saudi culpability in his disappearance. While the Saudi government has denied any responsibility in Khashoggi’s possible killing, and Trump has described relations with the longtime U.S. ally as “excellent,” Corker warned that all the evidence he’s seen suggests the Saudis killed the journalist.
What the matter “feels like to me is Saudi Arabia is responsible, and that [Khashoggi] is dead. I hope he’s alive,” Corker said. “And it’s possible that some other country was involved. But everything points to Saudi Arabia today.”

Goodbye, Political Spin, Hello Blatant Lies
Krugman maakt even gehakt van het verhaaltje dat de Republikeinen willen zorgen voor healthcare. En gelijk heeft hij.
quote: Black is white, up is down, and Republicans are defenders of Medicare.
Do you remember political spin? Politicians used to deceive voters by describing their policies in misleading ways. For example, the Bush administration was prone to things like claiming that tax breaks for the wealthy were really all about helping seniors — because extremely rich Americans tend to be quite old.
But Republicans no longer bother with deceptive presentations of facts. Instead, they just flat-out lie.
What do they lie about? Lots of things, from crowd sizes to immigrant crime, from steel plants to the Supreme Court. But right now the most intense, coordinated effort at deception involves health care — an issue where Republicans are lying nonstop about both their own position and that of Democrats.
The true Republican position on health care has been clear and consistent for decades: The party hates, just hates, the idea of government action to make essential health care available to all citizens, regardless of income or medical history.
This hatred very much includes hatred of Medicare. Way back in 1961, Ronald Reagan warned that enacting Medicare would destroy American freedom. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think that happened. Newt Gingrich shut down the government in an attempt to force Bill Clinton to slash Medicare funding. Paul Ryan proposed ending Medicare as we know it and replacing it with inadequate vouchers to be applied to the purchase of private insurance.
And the hatred obviously extends to the Affordable Care Act. Republicans don’t just hate the subsidies that help people buy insurance; they also hate the regulations that prevent insurers from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions. Indeed, 20 Republican state attorneys general filed a lawsuit trying to eliminate protection for pre-existing conditions, and the Trump administration has declined to oppose the suit, in effect endorsing it.
So if you’re a voter who cares about health care, it shouldn’t be hard to figure out where the parties stand. If you believe that Medicare is a bad thing and the government shouldn’t protect people with pre-existing conditions, vote Republican. If you want to defend Medicare and ensure coverage even for those who have health problems, vote Democrat.
But Republicans have a problem here: The policies they hate, and Democrats love, are extremely popular. Medicare has overwhelming support. So does protection for pre-existing conditions, which is even supported by a large majority of Republicans.
Now, you might imagine that Republicans would respond to the manifest unpopularity of their health care position by, you know, actually changing their position. But that would be hopelessly old-fashioned. As I said, what they’ve chosen to do instead is lie, insisting that black is white and up is down.
Thus Josh Hawley, as Missouri’s attorney general, is part of that lawsuit against Obamacare’s regulation of insurers; but in his campaign for the Senate, he’s posing as a defender of Americans with pre-existing conditions. Dean Heller, running for re-election to the Senate in Nevada, voted for a bill that would have destroyed Obamacare, including all protection for pre-existing conditions; but he’s misrepresenting himself just like Hawley is.
And they aren’t just lying about their own position. They’re also lying about their opponents’. Incredibly, Republicans have spent the years since passage of the A.C.A. accusing Democrats of wanting to destroy Medicare.
All of which brings me to a remarkable op-ed article on health care in USA Today, which was published under Donald Trump’s name this week. (If he actually wrote it, I’ll eat my hairpiece — although, to be fair, it was rambling and incoherent, suggesting he may have played some role in its composition.)
Part of the article claimed that the Trump administration is defending health insurance for Americans with pre-existing conditions, when the reality is that it has tried to destroy that coverage. But mostly it was an attack on proposals for “Medicare for all,” a slogan that refers to a variety of proposals, from universal single-payer to some form of public option.
And what did “Trump” say Democrats would do? Why, that they would “eviscerate” the current Medicare program. Oh, and that they would turn America into Venezuela. Because that’s what has happened to countries that really do have single-payer, like Canada and Denmark.
Why do Republicans think they can get away with such blatant lies? Partly it’s because they expect their Fox-watching followers to believe anything they’re told.
But it’s also because they can still count on enablers in the mainstream news media. After all, why did USA Today approve this piece? Letting Trump express his opinion is one thing; giving him a platform for blatant lies is another. And as fact-checker Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post put it, “Almost every sentence contained a misleading statement or a falsehood.” Even the president of the United States isn’t entitled to his own facts.
So will the G.O.P.’s Big Lie on health care work? We’ll find out in a few weeks.

Native American tribe slams Supreme Court decision upholding North Dakota voter ID law
quote: The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe slammed the Supreme Court’s decision allowing North Dakota to enforce a voter ID law. The law requires voters to present identification that includes a current residential street address if they want to vote in this year’s midterm elections. SPOILER
“Native Americans can live on the reservation without an address. They’ve lived in accordance with the law and treaties, but now all of a sudden they can’t vote. There is no good reason that a P.O. box is not sufficient to vote,” Standing Rock Chairman Mike Faith said in a press release. “Why is it getting harder and harder for Native Americans to vote? This law clearly discriminates against Native Americans in North Dakota. Our voices should be heard and they should be heard fairly at the polls just like all other Americans,” he added. A district court temporarily blocked the North Dakota secretary of state from enforcing the new requirements during the primary elections. But the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked that court order last month, allowing the law to be put in place ahead of the general election. The Supreme Court upheld the appeals court’s decision Tuesday. “The risk of voter confusion appears severe here because the injunction against requiring residential-address identification was in force during the primary election and because the Secretary of State’s website announced for months the ID requirements as they existed under that injunction,” Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in dissent. “Reasonable voters may well assume that the IDs allowing them to vote in the primary election would remain valid in the general election,” she added. North Dakota is hosting one of the country’s most widely watched Senate races, in which Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) is facing off against Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) to win a second term in the Senate.

Trump’s list: 289 accomplishments in just 20 months, ‘relentless’ promise-keeping (Washington Examiner)
quote: The Trump administration’s often overlooked list of achievements has surpassed those of former President Ronald Reagan at this time and more than doubled since the last tally of accomplishments after his first year in office, giving President Trump a solid platform to run for re-election on.
As Trump nears the two-year mark of his historic election and conducts political rallies around the country, during which he talks up his wins in hopes it will energize Republican voters, the administration has counted up 289 accomplishments in 18 categories, capped by the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
They include 173 major wins, such as adding more than 4 million jobs, and another 116 smaller victories, some with outsize importance, such as the 83 percent one-year increase in arrests of MS-13 gang members.
“Trump’s successes in reducing the cost of taxes and regulations, rebuilding our military, avoiding wars of choice and changing the courts rival those of all previous Republican presidents,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.
“Trump has an advantage over Ronald Reagan: He has a Reagan Republican House and Senate while Reagan had a [Democratic Speaker] Tip O’Neill House and a pre-Reagan Republican Senate. Reagan and [former GOP Speaker] Newt Gingrich were the ice breakers that allowed Trump’s victories to grow in number and significance,” he added.
Unlike the Year One list which included many proposals and orders still to be acted on, the new collection includes dozens of actions already in place, signed legislation, and enforced executive orders.

Bush - Kerry. Wie is het meest competent? Kerry. Wie wint? Bush.
