Much will depend, of course, on how North Korea reacts to Mr. Trump’s decision to pull out of the talks. After a year of breakthrough missile launches and a sixth nuclear test, Mr. Kim abruptly put his nation on a path toward peace — suspending weapons tests, releasing American prisoners and, just hours before Mr. Trump’s announcement, destroying its nuclear test site.

It is unclear how Mr. Trump’s withdrawal from the meeting with Mr. Kim will affect the internal politics of North Korea’s secretive regime. If Mr. Kim feels compelled to resume weapons tests and his drive to demonstrate that he can strike the United States with a nuclear warhead, the region will be on edge once again.

But if he refrains, Mr. Kim may have already earned enough good will among his neighbors — especially China, his country’s main trading partner — to see some softening of the economic sanctions against his isolated nation, without agreeing to give up his nuclear arsenal.

Trump walking away from the summit lets North Korea meet all its objectives: public recognition, lighter sanctions, damage to U.S. alliances and continued nuclear advancement,” said Adam Mount, a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington.

The rhetoric, while normal from this president, is norm-shattering. More puzzling, however, is the extent to which Trump has instigated a Republican-led war on intelligence agencies.

But officials at the agency were unable to determine with certainty the whereabouts of 1,475 children, Mr. Wagner said.

This begs the question: is it possible to quantify the "gender bonus" for women running in Democratic primaries this year?

In an attempt to calculate the "bonus," I compared the actual results of the 65 mixed-gender Democratic primaries to hypothetical results had every candidate on the ballot, regardless of gender, received the exact same share of the vote. It turns out that had votes split exactly evenly between all candidates, female candidates would have collectively averaged 39 percent of the vote across the 65 races.

But remarkably, female Democratic candidates have collectively averaged 54 percent of all primary votes across these races. This suggests a built-in advantage of roughly 15 percent for women running in Democratic primaries.

But there may be something much simpler and more powerful than ideology at work here: Democratic primary voters' intense desire to nominate women in 2018.
