Er zit nogal een groot grijs gebied natuurlijk tussen 'in Amerikaanse handen' en 'in Russische handen'. Ik heb natuurlijk niet gezegd dat Syrië in 'Amerikaanse handen' is. Saudi-Arabië is ook een bondgenoot van het westen maar om nou te stellen dat die 'in Amerikaanse handen' zijn..
Syrië was echter een relatief seculier, ontwikkeld land. Voor de burgeroorlog was het, samen met Jordanië, voor het westen enigszins een inweg naar het Midden Oosten en onderdeel van de relatief Westers-vriendelijke lijn Israël - Jordanië - Saudi-Arabië - Oman. Het is echt niet alleen om de olie te doen dat het Westen en Rusland continue gedonder hebben in het Midden Oosten. Rusland wil maar wat graag zijn invloedssfeer uitbreiden tot aan de Indische Oceaan, het Westen heeft dat uiteraard liever niet. Het punt is, degene die de meeste invloed kan uitoefenen in het Midden Oosten, heeft grote invloed op heel Eurazië. In dat geopolitieke spel zijn er maar weinig landen 'in handen' van andere landen. Zo zwart-wit is daar allemaal niet.

Het is niet helemaal eerlijk om per sector naar tarieven te kijken. Je moet een trade war over de gehele linie beschouwen. Import in Amerika neemt af maar dat betekent tegelijkertijd dat er meer geld overblijft voor consumptie. Dat kan geregeld worden door importvervangers (dan verandert er niks), sparen (prijzen up), of investeringen (meer eigen capaciteit en binnenlandse value chains). Als je per tarief gaat bekijken dan is het vrij logisch dat er mensen en bedrijven onder lijden. Maar je moet ook kijken naar waar er groei komt.quote:
