Bradley Wiggins begrijpt dat de injecties die hij heeft laten zetten als onethisch worden gezien. Maar de Britse Tourwinnaar zegt in een interview met The Guardian dat de injecties soms juist nadelig waren voor zijn prestaties.

Wiggins zegt al sinds de Giro van 2003 met een pollenallergie te kampen, maar het jaren stil te hebben gehouden. "Wanneer ik een allergische aanval kreeg was ik de volgende dag nergens meer. Maar ik wilde geen excuus hebben na een slechte prestatie."

Voor de Tour de France van 2011 bezocht Wiggins een specialist. Hij kreeg een injectie met triamcinolone, een stof die op de verboden lijst staat maar waarvoor de Brit toestemming kreeg om te gebruiken. "In de eerste week van de Tour voelde ik me zwakker en zwakker worden. Ik had geen kracht meer. Ik kwam onder mijn ideale gewicht terecht."

Raakt bokser Tyson Fury zijn wereldtitel bij de zwaargewichten kwijt? De Brit zou volgens ESPN positief hebben getest op cocaïne.

Op 23 september liet Fury weten dat zijn rematch tegen Wladimir Klitschko op 29 oktober niet zou doorgaan. “Niet fit”, luidde het toen. Het was al de tweede keer dat de wedstrijd werd uitgesteld, want de kamp van 9 juli kon niet doorgaan door een enkelblessure bij Fury.

Drugs

Volgens de Amerikaanse sportzender ESPN heeft het tweede uitstel niets te maken met een blessure, wel met drugs. Op 22 september zou Fury immers positief hebben getest op cocaïne. Verbazend is dat niet, want de Britse bokser had eerder al toegegeven dat hij soms cocaïne gebruikt in zijn voortdurende strijd tegen depressie.

Als het ESPN-bericht klopt moet Fury zijn WBA, WBO en IBO-wereldtitels mogelijk afstaan. Fury werd in november 2015 wereldkampioen door Klitschko te kloppen.

Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme believes cycling is no longer the black sheep of the sporting world after cleaning up its act following years of doping scandals. With other major sports such as athletics hit by scandals and major investigations, cycling is no longer in the global spotlight; with Prudhomme believing the public perception of professional cycling has changed.

"I'm happy to see that the climate is much less passionate than it used to be," Prudhomme told the Reuters news agency during a visit to see some of the key stages of the 2017 Tour de France. The race route will be revealed in Paris on October 18.

"You don't see champions who come from nowhere anymore. The likes of Nairo Quintana and Esteban Chaves have a pedigree, they shone on the Tour de l'Avenir. It's reassuring.

"A few years ago we had the feeling a change was needed. That's not the case any more."

Prudhomme has defended Amaury Sport Organisation’s interests in recent clashes with the UCI over the reforms of the WorldTour, and he portrays the Tour de France as some kind of mythical event rather than simply the central part of a lucrative sports business.

The former television cycling commentator has been the public head of the Tour de France since 2006, the year the Operation Puerto blood doping scandal broke. He has also had to weather huge doping controversies in 2007, 2008 and 2010, including the exposure of Lance Armstrong and the cancellation of the Texan’s seven Tour de France victories.

"We knew all the cheats and the liars on this earth did not gather up one day to decide they would be taking up cycling. It was not easy but it has been cleaning up its act," Prudhomme said, while also admitting that sport would never totally rid itself of doping.

"We want sport to be perfect, while society will never be. Society is not full of saints or full of crooks," he pointed out.

The latest allegations of cheating concern hidden magnetic motors in frames and wheels. The UCI now carries out checks with a tablet device and claims it is on top of the problem. However Prudhomme reveals that his concerns were only eased when the French police promised to carry out their own investigations using thermal heat guns at secret locations during key stages.

"Eight days before the Tour I was scared that these rumours would mar the race. Then when the secretary of state announced the use of these cameras, I was relieved," said Prudhomme.

Kampioenen komen niet meer uit het niks. Nee gelukkig was Froome al een klasbak ruim voordat hij in 2011 zijn neus aan het venster drukte en in 2012 al sterk genoeg was om de TDF te winnen.

Former Sky rider Tiernan-Locke says Great Britain offered Tramadol 'freely'

Former Team Sky rider Jonathan Tiernan-Locke, in a BBC report today, questioned Bradley Wiggins' use of a powerful corticosteroid drug to treat his allergies.

Tiernan-Locke also revealed that the Great Britain team, at the 2012 World Championships, offered riders Tramadol "freely around," but he did not take it. "I wasn't in any pain so I didn't need to take it, and that was offered freely around. It just didn't sit well with me at the time. I thought, 'I'm not in any pain', why would I want a painkiller?'"

Cyclingnews understand that British Cycling have put the allegation of Tradamdol use, or any other strong pain killer, to the doctor in question, and that he has denied it.

Former Team Sky rider Michael Barry described being prescribed Tramadol to use in competition while racing for Team Sky. The team said it used the drug "minimally" and supported a ban on its use in competition.

The news of Wiggins' Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) to take injections of the drug triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) before the 2011 and 2012 Tours de France and the 2013 Giro d'Italia emerged after hackers gained entry into the World Anti-Doping Agency's athlete management system for the Olympic Games in Rio.

WADA and the UCI have defended the TUE application process, stating that athletes like Wiggins followed the rules that allow for them to use normally banned substances when they have a medical need. Wiggins stated that he did not take the drug to gain an advantage. "This wasn't about trying to find a way to gain an unfair advantage. This was about putting myself back on a level playing-field in order to compete at the highest level," he said.

Tiernan-Locke, who became the first British rider to be banned for biological passport irregularities from his time before joining Team Sky, said that the case has people questioning Team Sky.

"From the outside it definitely looks odd that you would apply for a TUE before the major Grand Tours you have a GC ambition in, but at the same time [Wiggins] is just following a process. You don't know what his medical team has suggested, if he has allergies, maybe they suggest that's the best way around it," Tiernan-Locke said.

"It's just a shame that we've heard from other riders who have previously abused these drugs and saying how powerful they are and the performance enhancing benefits. So it's difficult to compute why that would be the go-to solution for something as ordinary as asthma.

"I don't want to insinuate anything, but the timing doesn't look great. There are other races throughout the year, and you assume if you had a need for such a thing it would be consistent throughout his career, that you'd use it year in year out, so from that point of view it looks suspicious."

"But from the other perspective, we've got a guy who's favourite for the general classification in these big races, so for a team like Sky who are so thorough, they don't want to leave anything to chance so, why risk these allergies derailing their best-laid plans, it's somewhat less than transparent. I can understand why the wouldn't want to shout about individual athletes or individual cases, and I can respect their right to privacy in that regard."

When asked if he felt the team were tainted by the case, Tiernan-Locke said they were not tainted in his mind. "I personally believe it's a case of preventing anything that might have... derailed their plans, but I do think they have become tainted [in the public eye]. People I have spoken to, out of training, it has kind of tainted their image somewhat. I think their modus operandi before was to put things out in the public domain and look transparent and not have anything to hide. So with these revelations coming out, it's obviously got people asking questions."
