Sultanahmet suicide bomber identified as Syrian ‘asylum seeker’

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suicide bomber who killed 10 tourists by blowing himself up in Istanbul’s touristic Sultanahmet Square has been identified as a Syrian citizen born in Saudi Arabia who recently appealed to a district directorate of migration management for asylum in Turkey.

The bomber, identified as 28-year-old Nabil Fadli, applied for asylum at the Zeytinburnu Migration Management Directorate in the Istanbul district on Jan. 5, security sources said.

Interior Minister Efkan Ala confirmed that the man’s fingerprints were on record with the Turkish authorities.

“Your assessment that his fingerprints were taken and there is a record of him is correct. But he was not on the wanted individuals list. And neither was he on the target individuals list sent to us by other countries,” Ala said alongside his German counterpart, Thomas de Maiziere, on Jan. 13.

Turkish officials are investigating the details about the bomber on the supposition that he might have given a false name to the migration office.

Fadli was provided a biometric identity after his fingerprints and picture were taken by the migration center. In his interview, Fadli told migration officials that he fled the war in Syria and wanted to enter Europe. He said he would stay in an apartment in the Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul, but he later moved to a hotel in Kadırga.

The man arrived at the center alongside four other men and remained at his declared address for a few days. The office gave identity cards to the four other men as well.

Fadli was among the Syrians migrants who were given “temporary protection” during their stay in Turkey.

Syrians who are given “temporary protection” are permitted to receive services such as residence permits, health, education and other social services.

Fadli’s identity was uncovered after crime scene investigators found his fingertips at the site of the explosion.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş said on Jan. 12 that the bomber had been identified from body parts at the scene, was born in 1988, and was thought to have been living in Syria, from where he was believed to have recently entered Turkey.

Gerhard Günther Höppner, Steffen Höppner, Rudolf Krollman, Hiltrud Krollman, Karin Erika Franke-Dütz, Rüdiger Karl Faber, Marianne Faber, Gernot Eike Mildner, Adolf Jurgen Glorius and Rudiger Becker were all killed in Fadli’s attack.

Nearly 80 percent of Turkey’s Kurds against ‘self-governance’

A recent survey conducted by the Objective Research Center (ORC) has revealed that 78.9 percent of Turkey's Kurdish population is against a 'self-governance' system for the Kurds, proposed by the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and PKK terrorist organization.

The research was conducted by surveying 3,197 people between Dec. 27 and Jan. 6 in 23 provinces, which are mostly Kurdish populated.

The survey showed that while 84.5 percent of those participated in the research supported the reconciliation process, more than 80 percent opposed the ditches dug in Turkey's southeastern districts by PKK terrorists and 69 percent calls the PKK a 'terrorist' group. In addition, 70.8 percent of the Kurdish population said that the HDP is politically affiliated with the PKK terror organization, while 61 percent disagreed that the HDP is the sole representative of the Kurdish population.

The survey also showed significant support among the Kurds for the presidential system, which has been a hot topic discussed in Turkey's politics. While 60 percent supported presidential system, 84.5 percent also favors the need for a new constitution.

Formed in 1978, the PKK has been fighting the Turkish state for an independent state until the early 2000's. The group then shifted its goal to autonomy in predominately Kurdish inhabited regions of Turkey. The PKK, considered a terrorist organization also by the U.S. and the EU, resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July.

The HDP lost nearly 10 percent of its votes in the Nov. 1 general elections, which analysts blame the downfall on the party's rhetoric siding with PKK violence.

Ook premier Davutoglu heeft hard uitgehaald naar de academici. De twaalf zijn verbonden aan de Kocaeli Universiteit in het noordwesten van Turkije, vlakbij Istanbul.

In de petitie roepen meer dan duizend academici uit Turkije en andere landen Ankara op te stoppen met 'massamoorden' en het vredesoverleg met de PKK te hervatten. Negen andere academici wacht eveneens arrestatie, maar de politie is nog bezig de daarvoor benodigde papieren te verkrijgen.

Volgens het persbureau Dogan heeft de Duzce Universiteit een medewerker die de petitie heeft ondertekend om die reden ontslagen. Behalve voor het beledigen van de staat, kijkt het OM ook of de academici kunnen worden vervolgd voor 'terroristische propaganda' voor de verboden Koerdische Arbeiderspartij, de PKK.
