Ondanks zijn jonge leeftijd speelde Gastón Pereiro, geboren op 11 juni 1995, al 39 wedstrijden in de Primera División van Uruguay. In twee seizoenen scoorde de aanvallende middenvelder elf keer in de hoogste divisie van het Zuid-Amerikaanse land. Nacional, zoals de voormalige club van Pereiro kortweg wordt genoemd, is de absolute topclub van Uruguay. Afgelopen seizoen werd de club met Pereiro in de gelederen voor de 45e keer landskampioen. Het is bovendien de club die onder meer Luis Suárez, de steraanvaller van FC Barcelona, en verdediger Diego Godín van Atlético Madrid opleidde.

Jeugdinternational
De nieuwste aanwinst van PSV is tevens jeugdinternational van Uruguay. Deze zomer was de 1,88 meter-lange speler nog actief op het WK onder 20. In Nieuw-Zeeland reikte hij met zijn team tot de achtste finale, waarin de leeftijdsgenoten van Brazilië na strafschoppen te sterk bleken. In de groepswedstrijd tegen de latere wereldkampioen Servië maakte hij het winnende doelpunt. Gemiddeld loopt Gastón Pereiro ongeveer een op twee voor zijn land.

The current summer transfer window is an important one for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. Their championship win means they are back in the Champions-League for the first time since 2008. 7 years ago they stood no chance in a strong group, this time around they want to do a better job.

Traditionally, the Dutch league is one of the best when it comes to developing young talents. Only recently, PSV winger Memphis Depay was transferred to Manchester United for nearly 30 million ¤. While that is common practice for clubs from the smaller leagues, it leaves them with the only option to start over again with fresh talent, often from abroad. This year, that group will feature one of Uruguay’s most promising starlets: 20 year old Gastón Pereiro. What makes him so special that one of Europe’s most famous clubs is going after and spending 7 million ¤ on him?

1. Technique
Pereiro’s technical abilities are exceptional. In Uruguay’s Primera Division he is superior to most of his opponents in midfield. His passes are precise, particularly when under pressure. Furthermore, he positions himself well to avoid those pressure situations in the first place, knows where the ball will be and where it has to go after. It is rare to find a player who is 1.88m, but still has the skills which are often only seen in shorter players.

2. Finishing
The young Uruguayan is a great finisher for his age. For example, in the South American U20 tournament, he was able to score 5 goals in 8 matches and was leading his team to second place only behind Argentina. Meanwhile, his breakthrough came during the last Aperture season in which he scored 4 goals. In his first and only Copa Libertadores match, he scored the goal that I linked below which showcases a lot of the strengths described in this article.

3. Polyvalent
The former Nacional midfielder can be used pretty much anywhere offensively. Going back to the aforementioned U20 tournament, Pereiro started playing both wings, before moving to his favorite central offensive midfield position. His abilities would no doubt make it possible for him to play as (supporting) striker as well, controlling long balls and involving his teammates.

4. Robustness
The way Pereiro puts himself into position to even have the opportunity to score goals comparable to the one in the video above is remarkable. He just shrugs off opponents like they don’t even exist. His size and especially his strength are not a common feature among players his age. Personally, I think this is one of the main arguments why he will succeed in Europe.

5. Experience
He might only be 20, but Gastón Pereiro collected a surprising amount of experience throughout his first few professional years. With Club Nacional, he won the Uruguayan championship in June by defeating archrivals Peñarol 3-2 in the legendary Centenario stadium. In addition, countless youth tournaments with his country are found on his resume as well, most recently the U20 World Cup in New Zealand, which ended in a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Brazil.

To summarize, the player has all the tools he needs to start a successful career overseas. After some time to acclimatize, he should feel right at home in a league that lies its focus tremendously on technique and strategy. While he can obviously still improve in all areas, predominantly defensively, the future looks bright for Gastón Pereiro. After all, the last famous Uruguayan from Club Nacional that made it in the Netherlands was a certain Luis Suárez. He now is a treble winner.

Born in Montevideo, Pereiro impressed at local side Racing before moving to heavyweights Nacional aged 13. Having excelled in the youth ranks, he made his debut in the Copa Libertadores in January 2014 before scoring his first league goal four days later, against former club Racing. That same year, he realised a dream by playing alongside his hero Álvaro Recoba and helped his boyhood favourites win the league title. In July 2015, with 'El Chino' Recoba's face now tattooed on his arm, the youngster switched to Eindhoven – taking the No7 shirt vacated by Memphis Depay.

Playing style …
Comfortable on either flank, or deployed in the supporting striker role, Pereiro is blessed with a fine left foot. With his size, strength and ability, the 20-year-old shrugs off opponents during unpredictable dribbles. He certainly has everything needed to succeed in Europe and will be inspired by another Uruguayan who had a promising start with Nacional before heading to the Netherlands – Luis Suárez.

Pereiro admits to styling his game on another tall attacker equipped with a decent left peg, Robin van Persie. At Nacional, meanwhile, he would stay behind after training to learn from his role model Recoba and practise free-kicks.

Eureka moment ...
On 4 October, the new boy showcased his quality with a spectacular contribution on his first start for the Dutch champions. Given the nod by Cocu to feature in the crucial trip to Eredivisie leaders Ajax, with Maxime Lestienne unavailable, the winger scored twice in a dramatic 2-1 success. Pereiro struck within seven minutes, cutting inside before finding the roof of the net, and added a second 11 minutes from time to end Ajax's unbeaten start and endear himself to PSV supporters. Three weeks later, he hit a Dutch Cup hat-trick against third-tier Genemuiden.

Best-case scenario …
Apparently settled in the Netherlands, the No7 is enjoying his breakthrough campaign with the Boeren, scoring eight in 20 outings so far. Although Lestienne and Luciano Narsingh are regulars on the flanks, Pereiro has established himself as an excellent option off the bench – figuring in four UEFA Champions League matches. Having also caught the eye with Uruguay at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in May/June – notching a group-stage winner against eventual champions Serbia – Pereiro could be set for a senior call-up.

Soms moet je ook een beetje geluk hebben. Op het moment dat Jorrit Hendrix aanzette voor zijn laatste sprint, had hij al aan de kant kunnen zitten. In de slotfase van Vitesse-PSV leek hij een beetje weg te zakken, waardoor er op de bank van de Eindhovenaren werd overwogen om Adam Maher in te brengen. Het liep anders. Hendrix mocht blijven staan en perste er in de slotminuten nog een lange sprint uit, die hem uiteindelijk alleen voor Eloy Room bracht. Oog in oog met de keeper van Vitesse zorgde hij voor het beslissende doelpunt: 0-1.

Het was een treffer die je niet zo snel verwacht van Hendrix. Laatste minuut van de wedstrijd, de stand is 0-0 en dan: de defensieve middenvelder die uit een counter de winnende goal maakt... Het zal aan de ene kant te maken hebben met de enorme drive van de jonge middenvelder, maar aan de andere kant zal het ook samenhangen met zijn huidige rol. Op papier is Hendrix dan wel de meest defensieve middenvelder, in de praktijk wordt dat bij PSV soms wat anders ingevuld. Zeker als de tegenstander Vitesse is, een ploeg die bij balverlies de tegenstander bij de keel probeert
te grijpen door zeer hoog druk te zetten. Dan is het namelijk niet Hendrix maar Andrés Guardado die zich vaak laat uitzakken om naast Héctor Moreno en Jeffrey Bruma de opbouw te verzorgen. Het bezorgde Vitesse vooral in de beginfase behoorlijk wat problemen. De thuisploeg probeerde wel hoog druk te zetten, maar via Guardado voetbalde PSV zich daar toch vaak makkelijk onderuit. Ook al omdat het elftal van Phillip Cocu in die fase zelf goed druk vooruit zette wanneer Vitesse de bal had.

In dat opzicht lijkt de kampioen van vorig seizoen toch wat gegroeid en in tactisch opzicht ook wat rijper en evenwichtiger geworden. Natuurlijk werd er aan het begin van dit seizoen heel veel individuele kwaliteit ingeleverd door het vertrek van de twee beste spelers – Memphis Depay en Georginio Wijnaldum – maar Cocu heeft dat aardig weten te compenseren. Zo is de ontwikkeling van aanwinst Gastón Pereiro heel belangrijk. De linksbenige rechtsbuiten speelde in Arnhem weliswaar niet zijn beste wedstrijd, maar heeft een specifieke kwaliteit die wat toevoegt aan PSV. In Engeland hebben ze daar een speciale naam voor: link-up play. De Zuid-Amerikaan is de baas over de bal in de kleinste en meest dichtbevolkte ruimtes, heeft oog voor de steekpass en creëert zo ruimte voor zijn ploeggenoten. Op het moment dat hij van rechts naar binnen komt, creëert hij niet alleen een-man-meersituatie op het middenveld, maar zie je ook dat rechtsback Santiago Arias buitenom gaat, spits Luuk de Jong in de bal komt voor de kaats en middenvelders automatisch aansluiten. Het maakt van PSV een beter voetballend en evenwichtiger geheel. Dat is alleen nog geen garantie voor een nieuwe titel.

Hij is met zijn twintig jaar nog jong en ook pas sinds de zomer in dienst van PSV, maar de ster van Gastón Pereiro is snel rijzende. Hoewel hij het vooral met invalbeurten moet doen, doet trainer Phillip Cocu vrijwel altijd een beroep op de Uruguayaan, die dat vertrouwen zelden of nooit beschaamt.

"Ik doe altijd mijn uiterste best als ik op het veld sta. In de competitie, tegen Manchester of tegen wie dan ook", vertelt de jongeling, die in juli voor zo'n zes miljoen euro overkwam van Club Nacional en voor vijf jaar tekende in Eindhoven. "Ik wil laten zien wat ik kan om een vaste plek te verdienen."

Een basisplaats lijkt de komende weken wel goed te zitten nu Luciano Narsingh door een blessure tot toekijken gedwongen is. Pereiro kwam al vaak als invaller voor de rechtsbuiten binnen de lijnen, hoewel beiden er een verschillende speelstijl op nahouden. "Narsingh is anders", beaamt de Uruguayaan. "Hij is heel snel. Ik ben graag aan de bal, ik wil assists geven en scoren."

Vrijheid
Cocu legt hem wat dat betreft geenszins aan de leiband. "Hij zegt dat ik moet verdedigen, het team helpen, maar ook dat ik moet aanvallen. Hij geeft mij veel vrijheid. Ik ben vrij om overal te zijn, om te spelen en op het doel te schieten. Hij is heel goed voor me."

Zijn twee treffers die PSV de zege bezorgden in het uitduel met Ajax begin oktober - nota bene bij zijn debuut als basisspeler - behoren tot de hoogtepunten in zijn eerste Eindhovense maanden.

Maar de Champions League-wedstrijd op Old Trafford tegen Manchester United viel ook niet te versmaden. "Ik was blij om in dat stadion met zo veel historie te mogen spelen. En mijn familie en vrienden zaten op de tribune."

Koud
Onder hen zijn vriendin, die nog studeert in Uruguay waar het nu aangenaam warm is. "Ja, een graad of 25. Heel anders dan hier. Toen ik hier voor het eerst kwam, dacht ik al: wat is het koud. Ze zeiden toen: wacht maar tot december of januari, dan is het pas echt koud. Maar dat hindert mij niet."

Liever focust Pereiro, die in zijn vijftien eredivisiewedstrijden tot nu toe tot vijf goals is gekomen, zich op het voetbal en met name de nabije toekomst. "In de competitie staan we vier punten achter op Ajax, maar we willen kampioen worden. En volgende week spelen we thuis tegen CSKA Moskou. We willen winnen om in de volgende fase van de Champions League te komen."

Foot on the Gas: Pereiro Promises to Shine
Primed against the defensive trio of Mitchell Dijks, Jaïro Riedewald and Joël Veltman, and with tackles flying in from all directions, the dark-blue-shirted attacker holds his ground and bursts through to blast the ball past a hapless Jasper Cillessen in the Ajax goal. The grinning face of Alvaro Recoba on the youngster’s right hand was a great representation of the glee felt by all PSV supporters in the stadium. Just 6 minutes into his first ever start for the club, Gaston Pereiro was already drawing gasps of wonder from spectators.

Rewind 11 months and Pereiro is already hot property in his homeland. Ahead of the South American U20 Championships in early 2015, pundit Tim Vickery noted that Pereiro ‘has even struck some as a left-footed Uruguayan version of Socrates’ – a remarkable parallel to be made for a player so young. Pereiro, donning the iconic No. 10, ended the tournament as the second highest goalscorer with 5, and continued impressing at the U20 World Cup too, when he netted the winner against eventual-winners Serbia in Uruguay’s tournament opener.

The summer for Pereiro was also replete with a signing soap opera as final hiccups threatened to throw his move to PSV off course, with his agents relentless in their demands for more money. This ransom attempt came at the very last minute, after Pereiro had already landed in Eindhoven and had informed his friends and family after PSV recruited the likes of the legendary Ruud van Nistelrooy and even Luis Suarez to convince the youngster to move to the Netherlands. Eventually, PSV stood firm and completed the transfer without further hassle; the only extra payment they agreed to make was to send away the taxi that the agents had waiting for Pereiro.

PSV scouts have historically had a favourable record with South American youngsters and he sheer magnitude of effort they have spent in securing Pereiro is definitely an encouraging sign of the 20-year-old’s potential, especially when PSV could have gone for a safer option in buying Steven Berghuis from AZ instead. PSV scouts, among other clubs including the likes of FC Groningen, have been following Pereiro since the then-teenager broke out on to the scene at Nacional in 2014. He rose extremely quickly from a wet-behind-the-ears youngster to one of Nacional’s most glittering players as they marched toward a league title.

Pereiro’s excitement and enthusiasm to don the red-and-white of the Eindhovenaren was quickly established as he promised to immediately find his feet. “I wanted very much to come to this club and am going to give everything I have in me,” he said upon his arrival. Naturally however, his initial outings for PSV came off the bench; he never played more than 30 minutes in the league until October. Even though Pereiro inherited Memphis Depay’s No.7 shirt, it was fellow summer signing Maxime Lestienne who was preferred on the left wing, while Luciano Narsingh took up Pereiro’s favoured position on the right.

Patience is a virtue, however, and on arguably the biggest stage in the league – against Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA – Pereiro got his chance. The build-up to the match saw Maxime Lestienne granted special leave by PSV to rush back to Belgium to be with his family following the death of his mother, while captain Luuk de Jong was ruled out with a malleolar injury. Had Lestienne been the only absence, Cocu may have opted to play Jürgen Locadia on the left and leave Pereiro on the bench again. But every cloud has a silver lining — or as Johan Cruijff would say: ‘Every disadvantage has an advantage’ — and the injury to De Jong forced Cocu to put the Uruguayan in the first team.

It only took Pereiro six minutes to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Receiving a pass from Pröpper just outside the box, he thought one move ahead of the Ajax defenders, and played a neat one-two with Locadia before holding his ground to scoop the ball over Cillessen; 1-0 to PSV. Ajax equalised soon after, but Pereiro was a constant threat. He raced back to make a tackle on Riedewald in the 41st minute, starting a counterattack that found its way to Locadia, though the 21-year-old’s effort on goal was thwarted by Veltman. The young Uruguayan was found to be in intelligent positions throughout the match to continue the flow of the ball and PSV’s play. In the 78th minute, he found himself on the end of a through ball by Hendrix. Just one feint to the left, onto his left foot and Riedewald was fooled, allowing Pereiro to pick his spot and bury the ball behind the Ajax keeper once more. PSV were seen as second favourites heading into the game against the league leaders, but Pereiro provided everything they needed to pick up three well deserved points.

He earned a starting place for the next match against Excelsior but was once again relegated to the bench against FC Twente as the speedier Narsingh was preferred in the right flank. However, it was Pereiro who sealed the victory in Enschede as he came on to chest down and volley home a Locadia cross. He continued to impress with substitute appearances, scoring the final goal in a freak 3-6 result at De Graafschap.

Following that, he changed the game for PSV against FC Utrecht. With the game deadlocked at 1-1, Cocu brought on Pereiro and within minutees of coming on, he displayed his best qualities of good positioning and vision. He floated in from the flank to an almost striker-like position, drawing defenders toward him and away from right-back Santiago Arias, who found himself on the end of Pereiro’s neat pass and scored. Later in the game from a much deeper position, Pereiro sent a beautiful overhead pass to Locadia on the left, who set up Luuk de Jong to make it 3-1 and give PSV all three points.

With Narsingh injured, Pereiro has recently found himself as the first-choice starter for Philip Cocu as right winger and against AZ he provided a sneak peek into the kind of football he can achieve in his favoured position. For the final goal in a 3-0 drubbing, Pereiro received the ball around 40 yards from goal and near the touchline. Caressing the ball down with a deft touch, he then embarked on a brilliant persistent dribble down all the way to the goal line, showing lovely guile and close control, before serving up a pinpoint cross to the feet of De Jong, who merely had to touch it to guide it goal-wards.

In PSV’s final game of 2015 on Sunday, Pereiro put some of his best qualities on show again; timing his run just right to tap-in Locadia’s cross and then, cutely twisting past Trent Sainsbury in a flash of a second after receiving Pröpper’s pass, to secure his double.

It is important not to overstate the potential of the young South American as he is still rough diamond and has various flaws in his game to iron out. Many critics, including his manager, have pointed out that while Pereiro has the ability to really impact a game, he can also go missing or be invisible for large parts of the game. He does not seem to be blessed with a great deal of pace and nor is he an incredibly hard runner in the game, still needing great improvement in his stamina; some fear that he could end up in Gaston Ramirez’s predicament if he does not work on his inadequacies.

But for the most part, Pereiro has been a joy to watch when on song; his countenance full of a boyish charm and enthusiasm as the stubbled trickster slaloms sleekly past opponents, leaving them momentarily confounded (Wayne Rooney may be able to testify). What Pereiro lacks in speed, he makes up for in sheer skill. Not just dribbling, but his vision on the pitch and spatial awareness in support of his teammates have all enthralled spectators. He is extremely quick to claim that Luis Suarez is his idol, but his style of play is more of a playmaker, floating across the width of the pitch and indeed, also with a good knack for goals through intelligent positioning. There is a hint of Juan Mata or Robin van Persie in his early days about him. With a good height and physical build in the mix too, Pereiro has the raw ingredients required to concoct a successful player in the Eredivisie and if his progress continues to be on track, he is likely to rise as one of the Eredivisie’s outright best players and attackers within a season or two.

In an interview in Voetbal International, Pereiro gushed: “I’m living my dream. Right from the beginning, I feel welcome at PSV. I love the tranquility here. In Uruguay I played for Nacional; when I walk down the street in Montevideo, chances are that I will get verbally abused or assaulted by fans of rival club Peñarol. Here it does not happen, the people are more relaxed. Very nice.”

In addition, he also shed light on the mentalidad ganadora of players from South America, the kind of winning mentality that saw the likes of Luis Suarez reach the top, and which young Gaston professes to have: “I always wanted to win. In everything. Whether it was at school, in card games or marbles: I want to be the best. That’s just in me.”

This quote could have been attributed to the PSV No.7 from last season and we would not have noticed, this only bodes well for the young Uruguayan. Armed with this kind of mentality and transplanted into a great learning environment in Eindhoven, the future looks bright for the elegant and exciting Gaston Pereiro as he aims to be the next wing wizard from PSV to pulverise opponents.
